This is a bakery, right? Wrong. We were in the mood for cake at 845 pm on our way back from dinner and in our search, Rubio's was our closest option that was still open with a promising number of Yelp stars. We got there at 845p, and the place was empty - all the food trays behind the clear glass were already cleaned out. We didn't care because we were there for cake. At first glance of the baked goods side, I didn't find anything that particularly looked good. Everything looked sooo dry. There were not many options for cake slices, either, and they looked sad. We should have just walked out then. But once again - I blindly relied on the Yelp rating. We settled on a slice of red velvet and opera cake. They were impatient with us as we asked for the cake, even though we had 15 minutes left before their posted closing time. That has no bearing on the rating. We took the cake with us to eat at home. They're lucky we did. After taking the first bite, I would have asked them to taste it themselves. The cake was inedible. HARD and stale and just wrong. Nothing fresh about it. In fact, the metal fork didn't even through the 3 layers of frosting easily. They should not sell anything in that kind of state. Such a waste. When we were paying, we talked about going back to try the food some time. No chance. The fact that they sold this kind of cake to us is enough to totally gross me out. read more

I went this morning for a rosca de reyes. Everyone was very friendly and greeted me with a smile. The place was clean and full of customers. All my co-workers including my self enjoyed the rosca. It was made just perfect and very delicious with a cup of coffee. Can't review the food or any other bakery item because I haven't tried it , but I will definitely be returning to try everything else. read more

I love this little spot. I never buy sweets here although they do specialize in exotic flan and fruit tarts. The food is amazing! Breakfast and Lunch. Guatemalan dishes. Cheap. Food selection changes daily. Stews, fried plaintain, black beans, sauteed collards greens, repollo, pupusas, rice, eggs scrambled with veggies, agua frescas, sausages, fried chicken, salad-- this is a typical lineup of foods on any given day. Sometimes there is a bit of a language barrier. Usually someone on staff speaks English, but if you know a little spanish, it will definitely go a long way. Rubio's just moved to a much larger space in the same block. It's GORGEOUS now! It's a true little cafe. They expanded the hot food selection and the cold food bar. They even have fresh squeezed juices on ice. Perfect for the hot days because the spot has no air conditioning! The prices are still incredibly cheap for the taste and the quality. read more

This is some seriously good food. I'm not big on baked goods so can't speak to that section, but the hot dish selection was truly delicious. A great variety with everything tasting homemade and fresh. A lot of pork dishes but everything we tasted was distinct. Both the bread and made in-house tortillas were excellent as well. I was kind of shocked at the pricing since there's no price listed on the menu board. We essentially had three huge meals, white beans with pork, chicharrones, shredded chicken, couple veg dishes, potatoes, rice, salads, sausage sautéed with cilantro, and more--and were charged $20 before tip. Insanely inexpensive for the quality of the food. Interior is cute and homey, with wood slab communal tables. Fabulous place for a quick late lunch. Can't wait to go back! read more

I like that the place is clean, humble but with a good ambience. The selection is very typical, authentic Guatemalan food. I don't however like eating in disposable plates when dining in. I also wasn't crazy that they don't have combination plates. You order everything that generally goes together on a breakfast separately. Their cakes look good but my first impression (having tried the "Budin") was, not as good as I expected. Generally this type of cake in my experience is extra moist and sweetened with a liquid caramel sauce of some sort. This one wasn't. Next time I'll probably try the sweet bread. I'll give it another whirl to see it they can twist my arm enough to give four stars. I think I'll try "tamalito de chipilin" next time. read more

I placed an order through the phone yesterday morning (Thursday) for a cake that I needed by tonight (Friday). The lady took my information, the kind of cake I wanted, and what I wanted written on it. She gave me a price and told me I could pick up the cake after 5pm today. I showed up at 6pm and they couldn't find the cake I ordered. After about 5 mins of looking everywhere they apologized and said that it seemed as if they didn't take the order down. I am extremely upset and disappointed and will not be returning to this place. Additionally, their prices are way too high. read more

I lived in the local area most of my life, I was in the mood for some authentic Chapin breakfast one day while running some errands in the local neighborhood and decided to bring my wife along. Most of the stuff I was in the mood for they no longer had as it was late in the morning and most breakfast items were no longer served or fresh. Next time we will have to be here earlier. read more

Fruit Tart Land. Strawberries in chocolate. Red cake and Mexican sweetbreads and hot food like nopales, pupusas, plantains, even macaroni salad and green salads. And agua frescas galore - mmm, the cantaloupe juice! It's called "Melon" accent on "lon". The last time I went to Rubios was the second day of my move to MidCity. I was in serious stress mode and spilled the capuccino so I didn't even get to try it. But the Palmieres were perfect. (At Rubios, you order Pamieres by saying the word for EARS in Spanish, orejo - or something like that.) Today I was driving from Dr. Khalsa's office (that's ANOTHER Yelp, best chiropracter east of Doheny.....Oh yes, so I made a wrong turn and now was waaaay passed BLOOM (where I planned to pull up and order a 3 shot latte as a treat for getting my neck snapped three times). BLOOM, though I appreciate it's there....bugs me. I don't believe in U turns so I kept on driving east on Pico, wheels spinning as to the next best option before I had to head south home. There was the Pico Starbucks with the posse of brothers who I Iove to see, but I have been over Starbucks since my exposure Portand coffee. And then I remembered... Rubios. They have a new beautiful space now in the same strip mall at Pico and La Brea. But terra cotta tiled floors and ceramic tiled tables and and ice water with mint and lemon. I ordered a 3 shot cappucino in Spanish and still. The first girl looked at me, scared. Like she was worried for me. She consulted with another server and had gone so far as to imply the machine was broken. And then my hero emerged. The cook, who suddenly emerged from behind the kitchen and leaped to my aid - he was excited to make my drink. I guess his ears were fllapping in the wind. and meanwhile, I ordered two EARS and a cinnamon coffee-cake for Lily. He handed me the 3 shot cap, I tasted it - a seriously formidable job - and for 2.50. Yes. Three shots for 2.50. No "sleeve" no lid, nor did I ask for one. HA HA. Rubios is not for sissies. Great little slice of Guatemala, complete with reggaeton music. Went here for lunch recently, got to practice my Spanish, and had some really well-cooked sauteed nopales in a spicy sauce, rice, and beans. My boyfriend got a beef stew and beans. The food was really tasty, and the aguas frescas, well, fresh. We also took home a couple desserts, which they had a wide selection of- something chocolatey with a cherry on top and a fruit tart. Both delicious, fresh, and about $2.50 each. While there, an ambulatory vendor came in selling belts. Really took me back to Central America! The place has a really pleasant ambiance and I'm excited to go back and try more of their food and desserts. read more

I love this place! The food is great, the atmosphere is very inviting, and the workers are so pleasant! They always have a smile on their face and are generous with their portioning. I especially love the cold oatmeal with fruit. I try and go every day if I'm not running late, and i call ahead to ensure they reserve one for me. If I don't start my work day with their oatmeal, i spend a few minutes wondering why I didn't call ahead sooner (ridiculous, I know). Sometimes the greatest places are right under your nose. Rubio's Bakery has been in the neighborhood for years and I dropped in occasionally for a cake or something, but at some point, they moved from the little space they had on the corner of this mini-mall at LaBrea and Pico into a much larger space in the same location. I wandered in early one morning just because nothing else was open and what a revelation! Rubio's is serving amazing, hot food now. The place is always bustling with inside and outside seating and the food goes so fast it's always fresh...you never feel that it's been sitting in the steam table too long. It's Guatemalan in origin but I was told they've been expanding a little to meet local tastes and I've tried a million things and have yet to find something I didn't like. The rice and beans are so flavorful and there are all kinds of stews and sausages and fish and potato and vegetable things that are always interesting, fresh and inexpensive. The people are nice too. Twice that I've been there (and I've been there lots) they threw in a delicious pastry...just because. I love this place and so does my whole family. read more

I'm sorry, I just can't trust a place that doesn't have their prices on a display board or menu. I have a terrible feeling that I got the high end of their sliding scale and what I got was pretty simple (and unfortunately very bland). There are a lot of people behind the counter, but if their job is not to help customers they ignore you completely or point to someone else you aren't able to see. So I get it now, the males who are behind the counter are only getting their own food and you have to wait for a female co-worker to help you? Is that right?
