I have always found Rubio's acceptable. After eating at this La Jolla location, I'm uncertain I'd ever eat at another Rubio's again. Here's what happened: We went to Rubio's for a mid-afternoon snack. My daughter ordered Loaded Chicken Nachos, while I ordered a single Langoustine taco. Ordering is via counter service, you pay, they give you a number, you find seating and they bring you your food. We found ourselves a spot outside. Shortly thereafter, our food unceremoniously arrives. I looked at my taco and though it was small and not worth what I paid. (It was slightly larger than a street taco, but the price reflected moreso.) I immediately smelled putrid langoustines that should not have been sold to anyone. I gingerly took a bite and promptly spit it daintily into my napkin. My suspicions were correct; it was past it's prime. I tried another bite to be sure and because, well ...I was hungry. Yuck! Completely inedible. Meanwhile, I was watching my daughter pull apart the nachos with a fork, but it was just one pile of a mess that wouldn't yield to chipping a piece off, even with a chisel. Upon further inspection, we discovered the many culprits that failed when assembling this "dish". The tortillas were fried so hard you couldn't eat them. This over-fried tortillas base had no discernible beans or chicken, and little of anything else. This pile of steel was then topped with a minuscule amount of cheese which made the whole pile stick together like it was glued in place. THAT was completely inedible. We had an appointment soon after this failed snack, so we just asked for a refund on the taco. For some reason, I thought I could "fix" the nachos at home and had them boxed up. (Just no. You can't end up with a masterpiece when the base is all wrong to begin with.) The manager had to be called out from the kitchen and of course, her excuse was that I was the first person who complained about the langoustines and she also seemed to take it personally. Look Lady, make sure SEVERAL TIMES during the day that your food is fresh, not just that morning. Lots can happen in between morning and mid-afternoon. MORAL OF THE STORY: Don't eat at Rubio's in the future. read more

Every time I come out to this part of the country, one of my stops has to be Rubio's for their fish taco. There's just something in it (crack?) that keeps me coming back to it. Yes, it's fast food. But I think it's good food and I enjoy it. This location has a nice outside sitting area and if you pick the right seat, you can even look at a nice walkway instead of one of the busier intersections in this large shopping plaza. How there aren't more accidents and people knocked over by cars, I don't know. But that's just a distraction. Back to the food. I had the two fish taco platter, which comes with a good serving of beans and some chips too. Great for scooping up the salsa from the self-service salsa bar. A warning - the "picante" is hot. The tomatillo and the chipotle are spicy but not hot spicy. More like tasty spicy. Yum! This location is convenient to UCSD and is located in a shopping area that has numerous choices, but we chose this place for the speed and value. The Baja trio i chose has tge traditional fried fish taco, plus a chicken taco in a blue corn tortilla and a shrimp taco in a flour tortilla. I came for pickup during the Covid-19 quarantine many times. I wish the workers in the kitchen doing food prep would wear masks. Customer service is great, staff is always happy and they are pretty fast even with how busy they get. Great stop for lunch, they have a lot of indoor and outdoor seating although they do have a lot of customer coming through a spot usually comes by pretty fast. Order online to skip the wait? The past two times I've visited this location and ordered online, I've had to wait an additional 15 minutes after my pick up time. The first time was for a halibut bowl and the second time for a fish taco and chips. Today (the second time), when I went up to the counter, I waited a few minutes to be acknowledged. Once I was acknowledged she checked for my order and didn't appear to find it and asked the kitchen. I couldn t hear what they yelled back to her and then she disappeared without a word, so I sat down to wait. This is my favorite Rubios location in La Jolla! I come here almost every Tuesday for Taco Tuesday, and always order the same thing: the Original Fish Taco ($1.75 each, college student budget friendly!) The fish taco comes out fresh, with the outside crunchy and not soggy. I have gotten the food to go once, but it wasn't as good. I think they put less white sauce on it, because they knew it would get too soggy otherwise, but it still gets soggy from being inside the bag. I'd say eat it there if you have the time. The white sauce they put on the taco is already good, but I like to add the mild salsa from their self-serve salsa bar. I heard the other two salsas offered are good, too, but I can't eat anything too spicy. Service is good, too. The employees are really nice and polite, and the restaurant is always clean. I work next door to this place and sometimes I come in for Nachos or something on my break. It's honestly an experience I look forward to. The brief interactions I have with the staff are always pleasant, and I feel very well taken care of any time I'm in the store. I've seen them put up with some vitriolic customers, keeping peaceful expressions and behaving with the utmost professionalism. Of all the times I've ordered there I've only had my order made improperly once (I'm picky and have a very specific order), and when I informed them they didn't hassle me at all - they fixed it and handed it right back to me in perfect shape. As a manager myself, I can tell you THAT is the way you do business. Do yourself a favor - if you like Rubio's and you work in the area, make yourself a regular here. The corn tortilla is supposed to have cheese grilled onto it, but it was barely cooked here, and didn't have that toasty texture which I've enjoyed at other Rubio's locations. This was my worst visit ever to this location. The beans were lukewarm as well. On a previous visit, I enjoyed the Ancho shrimp burrito on the whole wheat tortilla, and it was tasty with the avocado and sauce. The Gourmet grilled shrimp taco with cheese grilled onto the corn tortilla is normally my fav go-to item, but your kitchen ruined it this time. When it's cooked right, it has plenty of flavor, and I like to add the green tomatillo salsa and the jalapeño citrus hot sauce. I've also had problems at this Rubio's with the fish taco especial being mushy. How is fried fish mushy?! This Rubio's shares the parking lot with Whole Foods Market. It's also near a Flame Broiler. I'm tired of being disappointed at this location of Rubio's. The tables on the patio were dirty as well, and the bathroom was out of soap. read more

Let me start by saying that Rubio's normally rocks my world, and this location used to be amazing. I don't know what changed a few months ago. They did get a new staff (or at least mostly new) and in general the service has been atrocious. One girl in particular on more than one occasion has been a massive issue. My first interaction with her involved her painstakingly delivering each item on an order individually to a table so she could flirt with the boys. I kid you not, taco by taco she walked over, stood there smiling and talking, and then would start the process over. We waited 15 minutes for her to get the food that I could see finished on the counter!!! I asked her if our food was ready, trying to be polite, and she just looked at me and said "No, it's not ready yet" and left to take Taco #11 to the boy table. She is regularly rude and incompetent. I'm just baffled as to how the behavior can be allowed to continue. And unfortunately, she brings down the entire operation. Here's to hoping the staffing improves in the future so I can enjoy my favorite Rubio's again! read more
