Rubios Fish Tacos was once THE place to get fish tacos and other Mexican fast food. Credit has to go to Rubio's for bringing fish tacos to the American palate. They were the first chain to offer these delightful treats. That said, their fish tacos are nothing to be excited about anymore. The prices have gone way, way up, and the quality has gone down at the same time. Rubio has tried various things like lobster tacos, etc. in an effort to appeal to the gourmet crowd. But none of these have been very good, I rarely eat here anymore. The last fish tacos I had here were heavy and wet with white sauce, sparse in the amount of fish, and wrapped in tough corn tortillas. The tacos were literally dripping all over the place, and I had to salsa to give them a real flavor. I'm not sure what Rubio's can do to get back to the good product they used offer at a significantly better price. It's a tough business, and the price of food has gone up everywhere, especially fresh fish. The bottom line is that the food is edible, and I do dine here when I have no other option. read more

I went right around closing time and ordered four fish tacos and a chicken quesadilla .....left very unsatisfied. The quesadilla was not fresh. The chicken was dry and the cheese was hard. The fish tacos were way too creamy. I used to eat Rubios quite often on campus, and it never tasted like this before. Maybe because it was near closing time, and the workers got lazy? When the Green Hornet gets hungry, I am sure he stops by Rubio's to be served by the cashier at this location who's nametag insists he is Superman. From one superhero to another, the food is OK (for Mexican fast-food) and I really don't think Superman is really a 5'3 sizable Hispanic guy. If he is, those tights must work more magic than Spanx. I can say however that Superman did deliver some great customer service, a few laughs and a good start to a fun night. This location is a few doors down from the new Sprinkles and on my way to the movie theater. The interior is an odd rectangle that only has four 4-person and seven 2-person tables which is not good for groups. I love going to this Rubio's! The customer service is amazing here and they are always so happy! Normally I would go to your average, broken down taco shop for mexican food, but this was more appealing to me on this day. I don't really crave for much here, because I'm not a big seafood fan, but I tried to get out of that mind set and try something new. I decided to order the 2 fish taco meal that they have going on. Let me tell you, for someone who doesn't like fish tacos, MAN, THESE ARE GOOD! The right amount of crunch from the cabbage and fried piece of fish, the nice sweet tang of the sauce. Amazing! Rude staff, got order wrong, and basically accused me of stealing a coke. Ordered $35 of food online. Didn't do anything weird--ordered it as it came. Went to pick it up, the restaurant was not busy. I looked for forks in the bag and the top box cane open. It was missing the beans. I asked if they were elsewhere. The staff got quite loud and aggressive and told me I didn't order beans. But the taco plate says it comes with beans, and my receipt shows I ordered the plate so I asked her to explain it. She again grew quite angry and told me I could pay for beans. Deciding it wasn't worth dealing with her, I turned to the staff nearest the drink fridge and asked if I was supposed to get my own drinks. He stared at me like he was afraid to answer. I proceeded to get my coke and bottled water. The first staff then proceeds to tell me I'm a thief and I need to pay for the drinks. I remind her they are in the receipt she just looked at re: the bean debacle. She says I'm lying. I pull out the receipt, again, and show it to her. Both drinks are listed. Then she just walks off--no apology. When we got to the park to eat, the carne Assad burrito we ordered was missing and a veggie burrito was included instead--even though the staff told me it was steak. The two mahi mahi tacos were inconsistent. One piece of fish was juicy and fresh, but the other was super dry and tasted old. The positives: food was ready at stated time. Tuesday's $1.5 fish tacos here are the bomb. The fish inside is relatively big and goes really well with the sauce. The only downside is that sometimes it's very leaky and it might get it all over your hands while you eat, but that's something I can toerlate for some delicious and cheap fish tacos. I've never wanted to write a review about this place because I feel like it's a chain restaurant and probably everyone knows about their fish tacos. However, I changed my mind after I their California bowl. I got it with mahi mahi and this totally changed my impression of Rubio's. It's not just a chain restaurant that I would only go on Tuesdays but a place I would go if I crave for some good fish! The California bowl basically contains everything that a chiptole bowl will have but instead of meat, you get shrimp or fish! Will definitely come back for more! read more

We ordered catering service at this location. Still being remodeled. Our order was not ready at the time of our arrival so we had to wait around for them to compile everything. The staff was very apologetic and requested that we park in the front for ease of transporting the order to the car. This shopping center is horrendous during lunch time. I give pretty much all of Rubios locations 3.5 stars, as the menu, food quality and restaurant layout are pretty much always the same. I like that they have seasonal menu items. Sign up for their email club and you get lots of coupons too. -I mostly get the Balsamic and Roasted Veggie Salad with Shrimp. the spring mix is fresh, there is a generous amount of plump, deliciously grilled shrimp and warm, the warm veggies (bell peppers, onions) are perfectly grilled, the corn nicely fire roasted and a few strips of avocado which are always ripe. I haven't had the dressing on this since I always top it with my favorite Chipotle Salsa! -I also love the beef street tacos with delicious shredded seared beef and guacamole that I top with tons of cilantro/onion and Chipotle Salsa. I always get it with a side of spring mix which they rarely charge for! its usually the service that sets them apart. the staff is usually pretty good at all locations, but at some they are outstanding; speedy, more knowledgeable and go out of their way to make you happy and customize your orders. (and somewhat the location/parking). -the staff at this particular location is the friendliest and most knowledgeable of any rubio's i've been to. they go out of their way to make you happy, cater to any special request without a problem (I always get a side of mixed greens with my taco and they are one of the few locations that knows exactly how to ring it up (for free, btw) and doesn't question me when I order it) and are very efficient. -the parking can get tricky certain nights and it can get a little busy during peak times (especially when ucsd is in session and its taco tuesday) but I've never had a problem finding parking or a seat. it is pretty roomy and has a great outdoor seating area. read more

This place is absolutely disgusting. If you're looking for quality or even edible food, you most certainly won't find it here. It's a shame because it used to be halfway decent before COVID, maybe a solid 3.5. Nowadays, the quality has dipped so far its disgusting. I had a Burrito which was supposed to have steak, but I got chewy undercooked chicken instead. The bean dip was pretty much watery liquid poo in a cup, but you couldn't even eat it because the chips were pounded to dust and 1 cm fragments. The toppings/sauces looked like they had been sitting out for days. There was literally a dead fly in one of the sauce cup. Honestly, I would report this place to health officials, because this kind of food service is unacceptable. In the past, I've eaten a 2-week old burger from McDonalds out of desperation, and that tasted like actual garbage, but I would eat that again any day of the week over the Rubio's in La Jolla Village. One thing is certain, I won't be eating here again, and I'll definitely notify my colleagues to avoid this place like the plague in the future. read more

Of the four Rubios in the immediate area (here at The Shops at La Jolla Village, Renaissance Towne Center on Towne Centre Drive, UTC, and UCSD) this is the best. The staff is friendly, they get the orders right, food is hot, fresh and consistently delicious. They have a decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating. Salsa bar has always been topped off, fresh and clean. Restaurant itself is very clean as well. My "go-to" here is the shrimp & bacon burrito. Rubio's does decent Mexican food, taking into consideration that it's a franchise. The food is slightly overpriced but luckily Yelp has a $2 off check in coupon for almost any Rubio's location, which does a great job of semi-subsidizing your meal. Rubio's always has a variety of options and they don't charge extra for avocado or guacamole, which is a huge plus. This location itself is much better than the one on the UCSD campus, so you'll often see students here given its proximity to school. The parking lot gets fairly crowded but usually you'll be able to find a spot. They have a good Taco Tuesday deal as well in case you can't make it out to Oscar's every week; it's 1.50 per fish taco and their white sauce is so so good. In the past few weeks I've had their grilled shrimp burrito, fish tacos, and cilantro lime quinoa bowl (once with chicken, many times with shrimp) and I'm mostly a fan - I wish the portion was bigger but the quality of the entrees are usually great. A few other tips and tricks to make the most out of your meal - on the bottom of your receipt there's a website on which to answer a quick survey (5 min) and they'll give you a code for a free large drink; if you sign up for their Beach Club (email subscription) you get a coupon for a free taco; and if you include your birth date in the Beach Club sign up you receive a coupon for a free entree! While this was my favorite location, they are much busier now with catering orders for pick service, which has slowed down service for dining in and to go orders. Even when I went in around 11 am, no line and pretty empty dining room, they were busy cranking these orders out and makes the counter pick up/waiting area hectic. My orders lagged. I've tried a few times, but know I have to add and have time available to even try to pick up an order. read more

At least the takeout, I haven't tried it at the restaurant but after this experience I'm not even going to try. No dressing...just dry lettuce, and 2 little baby slices of avocado ... the few "grilled veggies" were mixed in some sauce but I was still eating dry lettuce . Thank God they added some croutons so that it can give the impression that there is some substance to this salad.... Oh I guess there was some quinoa, or should I say chunky dry quinoa mixed in with the small amount of veggies that I did find...
