I love Rubio's... this is my first time at this location and I'm unfortunately really disappointed. I got the Mango Avocado salad - ordered online to pick up in store. The lettuce in my salad was bad, super wilted and slimy. I didn't open the salad until I got back to work (maybe 8 min away) and I showed up within my 10-12 min window for it to be ready. I spent most of my time eating the salad, picking out the slimy pieces. And on top of that, they forgot to add the rice/quinoa mix. Super disappointing lunch, waste of almost $11 read more

This location is even better than most Rubios because it is a test kitchen, which means that they have additional items on their menu that they are testing out for future restaurants. How fabulous is that? Rubios already is the bomb.com. Of course I still ordered the fish taco especial because it is my go-to taco. A sad day when Rubio's can't grill a piece of fish. Ordered the grilled mahi bowl. The fish was about 1/4 to 1/8 inch thick and super overcooked and dry. It was like a piece of thick jerky. So gross and disappointing. read more

First time at this location stopped in before my 100mi drive home. Clean and quick service. I like the idea of a test kitchen - great concept. I usually enjoy eating at Rubio's because of their chicken tortilla soup and I normally add a simple burrito and this day was no exception. I also ordered the Balsamic & Roasted Veggie Salad for the first time, so I could take some of it home.  Well, although the food presentation looked great I wasn't impressed and a bit disappointed with one of the items I always get. In addition to the the soup being a little watered down in flavor and consistency/thickness (in comparison to various Rubio's I've been to in and near the city I live), the salad uses the same chicken as the soup, so the flavor of my soup and salad tasted very similar. Not sure if this is the same for all locations, but unfortunately I probably won't try it again or recommend it. read more

We came in to eat about twenty minutes before they closed. Initially I felt bad about this, I hate coming in at the last minute to eat. As someone who works in the industry I know what a pain in the ass that can be. With that being said, the employees were so welcoming and patient. I really appreciate that. I'm a self proclaimed taco connoisseur! These were Ok at best tacos. I've had tacos like these a lot so nothing to rave about. I got the original fish taco and the veggie taco. The fish tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly, the cabbage gave a good crunch and there was good seasoning to it. The veggie taco though was another story. The tortilla was chew and thick and that just put me off! I also got the chips and guacamole. Bad guacamole that was like blended to a paste in blender and spri led with onions..there was no lemon and it just tasted bad. Came here on a Saturday night and ordered the two original fish taco plate. The tacos were delicious except I asked the worker for flour tortillas and was stuck with corn tortillas so it was a little dry. This location is bigger than the other I've been to but it was not as busy. I noticed that the salsa bar was very messy and a few salsas were running low and needed to be filled. read more

Thanks for the amazing customer service. I believe the woman who helped me was named Jennifer. She was friendly and conversational with each customer. Her upbeat and pleasant attitude was infectious. There was another employee who came up front while I was there and he was singing along with the music playing as he worked. Now serving fish taco especial for 2 bucks after 2:30 pm on Tuesdays. What a great deal! If you like seafood then Rubio's does a good job preparing a good meal. I come here on Tuesdays for the fish taco deal but this time someone gave me a coupon for a free meal up to 10 dollars worth so i got the shrimp burrito meal that came with chips. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the burrito was delicious. I would like it if they had more variety for their salsa bars like pickled carrots or avocado salsa. If you haven't had a fish taco then you need to come to Rubio's for the experience. I only get fish tacos from here, i have tried other places and it doesn't taste the same. The Rubio's on Clairemont Mesa is a great Rubio's to hit up for dinner. Why? it has a large dining area, designed for their busy lunch crowd, but at dinner time, it is less crowded and feels comfortable. The restaurant is well lit, and kept clean. The fish tank is a nice divider. The staff last night seemed to be extra courteous - the shift leader who took our order actually pointed out where the salsa bar was - I don't remember the last time that the cashier had ever done that at a Rubio's. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time, and was the standard Rubio's fare - i got a fish taco especial plate, my wife got a quesadilla. Add some salsa and we are good to go! Sometimes at Rubio's, the fish tacos are a little too saucy, making that second taco a drippy mess because the first taco dripped all over it, but last night, everything was just right. The food at Rubio's is generally pretty good, and the service I experienced last night was top-notch, along with a clean well-lit dining area, making this a 5-star review, instead of just the 4 stars that a Rubio's would normally get. read more

Have to agree with Clark H.'s assessment - what's wrong with y'all who've given 5 stars to Rubio's?!! Many moons ago the fish tacos used to be better tasting, now they taste manufactured. In fact, the fish tacos from the Vallarta's drive-thru (on Genesee) are much better - each taco is filled to the brim with a large piece of battered fish and fresh salsa and cabbage. Is it just me, or hasn't everyone else noticed that Rubio's stuffs their burritos mostly with fillers (beans and rice)? Also, their "Lobster" burritos (when offered) are a joke; not only is it *not* lobster meat, it's actualy some type of crayfish (i.e., craw-dad) crustacean meat. Again, in addition to the 50% of filler. So, I haven't been back in awhile. But I do miss the red hot sauce which tastes great with lime on chips. read more

Rubio's has been my favorite fast food restaurant for years, given that we were created the same year I think it was written in the stars This location is right by my office but that's not why it's my favorite. I have lunch here once, maybe twice a week, and I have NEVER been treated so well by restaurant staff. They know my G-D name, and actually call me by it and smile when I walk in. What is wrong with these peole who put a 5 for RUBIOS? Ok so they are better than Santanas, but you can't spit in SD with out hitting a Mexican Restaurant (or a realtor for that matter). Maybe I have been spoiled by the fish taco trucks parked in ghetto liquor store lots on El Cajon, selling fish tacos for a buck every day of the week, overflowing with a huge chunk of fresh (at least it tastes as if it could be) fish, and all the helpings of a true baja fish taco. Plus double helping of flies swarming the pickled onions and salsa (bottled salsa please - home made of course). The fish tacos here at Rubios used to be better, but the ones I had last night were industrial at best. They had the worst corn tortillas I've had in years, an industrial fish-stick esque piece of fish. Blah not so good. I did eat 4, but only cause they were sitting in front of me. I used to like ruvios, but I realized that has changed. First they got rid of the fish tanks. There is just something about eating fish while other fish watch you that I miss. I miss the fish. Where did the fish go, I hope not in the fish burritos. I always wonder. Next they raised prices too much. The food is just not that good anymore. I have to say this location is always clean, including the salsa bar! They usually have a short line but it goes super fast because of their efficient staff! This isn't your typical Rubios, it is also a Test Kitchen. It is large, spacious, modern decor, and a little more upscale than the typical Rubios that has a cantina feel. They have the regular Rubios menu plus additional menu items they're developing. On Tuesdays after 2:30pm, they have $1.50 fish tacos. Yummo and a great deal! read more

I must say I really enjoyed their shrimp burrito...the shrimp actually tasted like shrimp and not some plain white-ass farm raised squishy thing that tastes like jello. This was my first visit to Rubios and had to try it as my coworkers recommended it to me. I ordered the fish tacos and I was happy with my choice. The fish was tasty and the tortillas nice and soft-just right! They had a good selection of salsas at the salsa bar. Prices seemed a bit high but at least they had lots of healthy options. This is a more advanced Rubio's shop with unique creations designed to tantalize your palette and give the owners a sense of what should be added to the main menus at the regular Rubio's. On Tuesday after 2:30 PM they sell their original fish tacos at half price. Personally, I love the mango mahi-mahi tacos. I think they're fantastic. Prices are okay. We were in the area doing some beer tasting and decided we needed to eat first. We'd come to this center to grab sandwiches at another place, but as soon I saw the giant "Rubio's Test Kitchen" I knew we had to give it a try. I love the idea that this is the location where they try out new menu items - it makes me feel special. I actually hadn't been to Rubio's in so long that I couldn't really identify what the special menus items were vs. the normal menu items, but it's clearly fancier than your normal Rubio's inside. I ordered the balsamic roasted veggie salad with blackened tilapia and it was delish. The dude opted for the California bowl with blackened Mahi Mahi and his only comment was that the small amount of lettuce/salad greens at the bottom was a weird fit with the rice but the flavors were otherwise on. I'd ordered chips because we needed something fried and crunchy to balance out our healthy, virtuous meal and they had apparently not gotten put in, but the guy who brought out our food was nice enough to go grab us some anyway. I'm sad this isn't how all Rubio's everywhere are because we were super happy with our food and overall experience. I'm sure we'll be back to the area for more beer drinking (tasting, drink, samesies) and we know where to come for a delightful meal first! read more

While on the road, we were looking for something to eat and this Rubio's provided that with excellent service and an obviously well run establishment. It was clean! Much cleaner than the local Rubio's near our home. I had the California Bowl with pan seared shrimp and it was very good co soldering Rubio's is still a bit like a fast food place to me. Today, I ordered a two-taco plate of their original fish tacos. When I bit into my first one, it turned out there were some bones in the fish. I let the management know, and they had a fresh one out in a manner of minutes. They also gave me coupons for some free fish tacos to use at my convenience at a later date. Specifically, Braulio assisted me with the entire ordeal. He was extremely helpful and turned what would have been a bad experience into a very positive one. The young woman Raina who took our order was patient and helpful as I pulled a Meg Ryan from When Harry Met Sally as I didn't like any one thing exactly. So she helped me modify a burrito. Then she recommended the Roasted Lemonade. Yes, roasted lemonade. Yum! It was a touch too strong for my taste so I just cut it with soda water. Super fresh ingredients. Great indoor location with plenty of seating during the lunch rush. This is one of their test kitchens so you will find food here that you won't find at a regular Rubios.
