Was visiting Birmingham and randomly searched Yelp for breakfast spot near Homewood. Yelp did not disappoint. Food here is a bit pricey ($4.50 for 1 4" pancake!) and they hit me with an egg surcharge but breakfast is no longer guaranteed to be the cheapest meal of the day. Our server, others on staff, the ambiance and tastiness of the food more than made up for the increased cost. We can see where this spot will probably be super busy on weekends so plan accordingly, order a breakfast "beverage" and make the best of your wait. read more

My friend and I decided to give this place a try during our visit to Birmingham (we went to the Chris Brown concert that weekend). The place was super busy probably because of the concert (we saw a lot of CB t-shirts in the crowd). We were advised of the wait time (almost an hour to be seated and another hour for our food). Our server was nice and welcoming. The food was absolutely mid. I ordered the catfish and grits. The grits were delicious; flavorful and creamy. My friend had not been here, so Saturday was the day to change that. We arrived about noon and it was solidly busy. We checked in to find the wait to be about 30 minutes, but in actuality was 47 minutes. As a general rule, I don't like eating outside but we did on this occasion. We were seated near a large party of "friends" having a grand but loud time. Normally we would have multiple issues with this, but it was a glorious day and we just went with it! My friend ordered The Trifecta while I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with a side of bacon. Our waitstaff was a wonderful and kind young man who did everything right! I failed to catch his name though. After our first bites, my friend and I stopped talking and commenced to eating. My scrambled eggs were the best scrambled eggs I have Ever had. They were silky, creamy and soft...perfectly scrambled. All I heard from my friend was OMG..."this is so good"! I have been here many times and I don't remember the eggs being this good, the chef of my eggs was on point! I tried the Very Berry Beignet and a Florentine Omelet. The Very Berry Beignet was delicious it reminded me of eating a doughnut with whipped cream and strawberries. I added bacon to the Florentine Omelet and loved the way it complimented the mushroom, spinach, and cheese. The biscuit was dry and hard, so I would recommend to get toast instead. I would definitely recommend. The service staff was nice and helped to describe the taste of the beignets since it was my first time trying them. So so sad to be writing this review. I think my previous reviews and photos at this place show how much I used to love it - was honestly my favorite brunch place in town. The last two times I went I did notice a decrease in quality and service but nothing major. This time however was a different story. Bit into my breakfast taco only to find a razor embedded in the eggs (pic attached). The waiter took back the dish and had it re made but my appetite was pretty much gone. They comped the meal but I think I am not being unreasonable when I say it's absolutely horrifying to find a razor in your food. This was absurdly unhygienic and obviously dangerous. No clue where the razor had been prior, why it was in the kitchen, how or why it ended up in my meal, etc. Corporate office offered me a free meal on them to make up for it but I'm still a bit confused why we're downplaying a razor. Am thankful I didn't bite down on it the wrong way. TLDR - gross. dangerous. not coming back :/ read more

We finally asked if the waitress could check on it and she shrugged and said, eh sometimes it can take an hour for food. I said uh no and my husband wanted to leave. I asked if she would mind checking on the order. At this point, we wait for 45 minutes since we ordered it. She said would check but then just kept bussing nearby empty tables. For several minutes. And right after she went in to get our food, someone else brought it out. Very frustrating because I have been to a ruby sunshine when super busy and this was NOT one of those times. I've been to Ruby Sunshine a few times, and while the food is always very good, the service consistently leaves something to be desired. On my most recent visit, we sat at the bar because the wait for a table was 30 minutes -- this seems to be a regular occurrence. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow. It felt like our waiter was avoiding us, and we had to wait far too long for everything. The food, though, is always a bright spot. It's flavorful, reasonably priced, and well-prepared. However, the staffing issues really bring down the experience. The environment itself is pretty basic, nothing particularly special or lively, just a regular spot to grab brunch. If you have the patience to wait and don't mind slower service, the food is worth it. But if you're in a hurry or looking for a more lively atmosphere, this may not be the place for you. read more

Had a little time on a Sunday morning before I started an 8 hour drive. I had heard about Ruby Sunshine in Homewood, AL and thought I would give it a try. I arrived early before the lunch crowd and given that the weather was perfect, was fortunate enough to get a table outside. Everyone was friendly and after I mentioned I was a first time visitor, they were eager to make suggestions based on my questions. Beignets and caramelized bacon for appetizers, strong coffee and the day was off to a great start. Unfortunately, no fancy cocktails since I had a long journey ahead. My entree was MIGAS, a Tex-Mex egg scramble with lots of great ingredients. Not so much a New Orleans dish but very tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Also, service was excellent. Sometimes, when the table is outside, service lags because it is not in the normal path of your server. Not the case here. My coffee cup was topped off regularly and the food arrived quickly. I know this restaurants is part of small Southern chain and may or may not be locally owned. However, either the managers or owners made the experience a pleasure and pride of ownership was apparent. One of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. I missed my flight so to kill some time we found this place. It was excellent. I knew we were in the right place when we got out of the car and in the parking lot we could smell the smoky bacon cooking. The pig candy sounded too good to pass up even though I dont normally order appetizers for breakfast. It was tasty but had way too much uncooked brown sugar on it. Literally caked on. It would have been better if it was carmalized a bit. But I forgive that, because the tres lleches pancakes which I have never seen in California, were pretty amazing. This was our 2nd time dining here and it did not disappoint! I love having the option of indoor or outdoor dining. There is plenty of both here. Upon entering, you are greeted by a friendly hostess. Our server was Tyler and he did a great job. We started creamy iced vanilla coffee $5.50 which is good and not too sweet. You need to order the French toast bites $6 that are delicious and highly recommended. We also got the seasonal beignets $7 that were topped with blueberries, lemon curd and almond cream. The biscuits and gravy $13.50 (come with 2 biscuits) with chorizo and eggs were very good. The breakfast tacos $12.50 are also very good and come with 3 tacos and potatoes. I went to Ruby Sunshine years ago and simply did not like it. I love traditional breakfasts. I hate grits, can you tell I am from the north? Then my daughter wanted to go there for breakfast last week. I so, ok. I will try it again. So glad I gave this place another shot. The Traditional Southern breakfast was NOT for me. I did not like half the stuff on it but my wife that it was the best Breakfast she has had for years. That is saying something. I had the breakfast sandwich and it was over the top great. Mine came with simple roasted potato chunks that I loved. We ordered French Toast bits that were to die for but order them first and eat them first while they are hot. One of the most surprising things was the coffee. It was really good. My wife had a flight of Mimosa and has no complaints. All and all a great experience and I highly recommends.
