Tried to go to Pancake Pantry on a Monday morning, but they ended up being closed for renovations so we decided to go to Ruby Sunshine right next door. There was no wait for a table for 3 although we weren't in a great location stuffed in a corner between the front door and hostess stand. I never thought id say this about a restaurant in this franchise. But this was a great experience. It's still not New Orleans but it's as close as i have seen. The service is a bit slow for them not to have a wait, they might be slightly understaffed however the service is great. I also have never been to a location where i didn't have to wait, was seated when i walked up. The food was great, i got the peacemaker with the shrimp Cortez and the chicken st Charles, which is my favorite. Every time I've had it before the shrimp Cortez was cold. Not this time, the shrimp was a bit fishy but other than that, it was absoutely delicious. I ordered a biscuit after i got my order because i needed to soak up the night before and it was delivered quickly. The restaurants just somehow don't give you the Ruby Slipper vibes, maybe it's a magic you cannot recreate outside of New Orleans. However it's extremely clean and the layout was thoughtful. My toddler and I ended up trying Ruby Sunshine because we thought the Pancake Pantry was closed. It ended up being the best restaurant food I have eaten since moving back to Middle Tennessee two years ago. Biscuits and beignets are made from scratch, and the eggs Benedict was soooo good. I love eggs Benedict, and Ruby Sunshine knocked it out of the park for me. The Bayou Shrimp with the fried green tomato was excellently seasoned and combined really well with the sauce. The Eggs Cochin was also really good, but I think I would try a different one next time only because it had pulled pork, and there was a tiny bit of pork fat in it, which is just not something I personally prefer. There was a Hot Chicken Benedict, a two tomato Benedict, and a more traditional one that both looked really good. As for my kiddo, he LOVED his French toast bites that came with a really nice variety of fruits, including big blackberries. There was definitely thought put into also serving a quality meal for the kiddos instead of dumping microwaved Kraft Mac n Cheese into a bowl like we've had some places. I also have to commend the service. Our waiter Robert B (or Richard B - sorry!) was really attentive without hovering in any way. His menu suggestions were spot on. Plus, I appreciate his patience with my toddler. Today, we went back to the area for lunch but tried Pancake Pantry for the kiddo. By the time drink orders reached us, my husband and I were already expressing we wished we had gone to Ruby Sunshine's. There's nothing like trying to keep your toddler from wandering into the connected store next door, having to rip open a mayonnaise packet with your teeth as a sit down restaurant, and spending too much on bland food (minus the pancakes). Or your toddler dropping his stuff on the urine soaked floor in the bathroom stall as you try to do one more potty stop before you leave. Skip the Pancake Pantry hype and go to Ruby Sunshine. Under normal circumstances this would be a four star review. We love this area of Nashville so we eat in the neighborhood often when in town. My wife, daughter and I asked to be seated outside at one of the two available tables on the patio and was told we couldn't by the very rude and kurt hostess. So we were seated at a table inside. Our tall server was excellent, friendly and very efficient. The food was quite good, especially the sausage gravy, and eggs were cooked perfectly. Our server also served outside. What?! She can serve us inside but not outside? Hostess was just on a power play and being a jerk. And get this, people got sat at both tables outside! Even worse, they were serviced by our waitress. Sigh. After a great check up with one of my cardiologist specialists at Vanderbilt, I was hungry and wandered down into Hillsboro Village for a hearty brunch. I was not disappointed. Follows are my comments on the meal I had and some other stuff. Make no mistake, the prices support the quality of food offered. Of course, it is near Vandy. I had a great meal. If you order any of the "Mix and Match" options for Eggs Benedict, choose the option for two. You will never finish three. The option for two includes Benedicts that are not on the regular menu. My favorite was the crab cake one. It was very interesting, and I found the little fried green tomato on the bottom just the right bite to offset the dish. The chicken option I chose was great, but I maxed out on stomach capacity and wanted room for beignets. The beignets were a special offering - peaches and cream. WOW! But, I was "faked out" by the presentation. My fault. They had peaches and cream stuffed French Toast, so I expected my dish to be stuffed. No. The pastries were served in a dish with the topping served in a manner more like a sundae. The luscious cream and peaches were tucked away under a mound of whipped cream. And, the peaches and cream were awesome. The cream was not just a sweet cream, it was cream cheese. My server was great. I enjoyed sitting at an outside table, watching the vehicular traffic, studying the visible murals, enjoying the fresh air and people. I have been wanting to try this place for awhile but have always been deterred by the long wait times. You can call in to get on the waitlist or join the waitlist online which is a great feature. I called to joined a 2 hour long waitlist and was able to plan it so we were seated within 10 minutes of arriving at the restaurant. Ruby Sunshine has a fun brunch vibe. You can get all kinds of morning cocktails and even boozey coffee. I wasn't feeling alcohol when I visited so I opted for a regular iced coffee with milk. My boyfriend and I were feeling particularly hungry at this point in the morning so we decided to each order an entree as well as French toast to split as an appetizer. We got the bananas foster french toast. This was the best part of the whole meal! If I had just tasted this item, my review would have been 4 stars. The french toast was topped with warm gooey bananas and raisins as well as a yummy rum sauce. For entrees, I ordered the salmon avocado toast and my boyfriend got the Trifecta, which is a combination of three of the popular Benedicts on the menu. The salmon avocado toast was good but kind of nondescript. It was overall a little too dry as well. There were some good elements of the Trifecta dish - shrimp have nice Cajun flavors - but the biscuits were dry and the chicken breading was not crispy. Would definitely consider giving this place another try, but will mostly likely stick to boozy coffees and sweet French toast. read more

If I could make this negative stars I would. This was hands down the worst dining experience in my life. I am very easy to please, understanding, cut slack, and no matter what will tip 20%. The wait was 30 minutes, so I decided to go to the bar to get a drink while I waited. The drink took longer than the 30 minute wait for the table. The bartender did not acknowledge me. It was not packed. She took my order 5 minutes before the text that my table was ready and I proceeded to order a latte. She asked me if I wanted it black... Did she not know what a latte was? Once I was seated, the hostess threw down the menus with no silverware and walked off. No "enjoy your meal" or any welcoming nature. Next our waitress did not make an appearance at our table for another 15 minutes. When asked questions about the menu, she had no clue. I asked what type of bread the breakfast sandwich came on and she said, "I don't know but I know it's something white." Well, it arrived on a burger bun. The plate was appalling. If I was a staff member, there is no way I would have EVER let that plate sit in front of a customer. Refills weren't brought until after meals were finished. Payment was processed on a QR code in which the waitress again couldn't answer any questions about. I am a Nashville native and this was just embarrassing. Food, garbage. Ambience, garbage. We went here yesterday. Best choice I've made in a long time when it comes to "Russian Rouletting" (what I call making a decision on a whim for food). It's by Vanderbilt University so expect it to be busy when school is in full effect. Luckily for us it wasn't crowded at all. They have outdoor and indoor seating.
