Stopped by after a day at Legoland. It was Tuesday which their website advertised kids eat free with each adult meal. Cool. Food was better than I recalled and service was efficient. My wife had a salted caramel shake which was good but not great. The weird part came up while paying the bill. The kids food was not free but when I noted to waitress she cheerfully said yes, it is kids night but you have to ask for the free kids meals. She took the charges off with no fuss, but I think it is really weird that you have to ask. Perhaps some folks don't know about it or are to shy to ask, but if you are going to highlight this in your advertising, then it should be taken care of without asking. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and a four star review. read more

Ruby's is a typical chain diner. It's alright. The food is fine, the prices are fine, and the service was nice. Overall they aren't a place I would make plans to go to specifcally, but if I was in the area and wanted a place to grab a quick bite, I also wouldn't avoid them. read more

Service is exceptional. Since we didn't wanna eat breakfast, the waitress was so nice to switch it for us. I highly recommend the sweet potato fries because they are refillable. I also tried the salads. They were very delicious and made fresh. read more

The cinnamon roll french toast is the best dessert for breakfast I've ever had. Ready for my diabetic coma but damn amazingly delicious.

Had a good dining experience with them today. It wasn't to busy, so that probably helped out. The waitress was real sweet and gave good food suggestions. Pretty good food. I've never been to a full sized Rubys before. I went in for breakfast and got an omelet. Not the most amazing ever but it was reasonably portioned and just what I was in the mood for. Service was nice too. My only issue was when I came in, there was a weird smell. Sewage maybe? Didn't smell clean. It bugged me the whole time. Doesn't seem to be normal so I don't hold it against them. read more

Ruby's is just your run of the mill, themed diner. But what sets it apart is the service. We just went in for coffee and dessert, and usually that prompts a disappointed or disgusted look. Not here! It actually even caught me off guard how the hostess and server seemed even happier to see us! Especially our server Marcie. She was great! She gave us great service with a smile and chipper attitude. I wish I saw more of this customer service out there. read more

I use to have dinner with my Grandparents at the old Ruby's diner that replaced the Rose City diner in Pasadena when I was much younger. My Fella and I were shopping at the outlets and needed a quick little nosh to tie us over until dinner a few hours in the future. We saw Ruby's and I was taken back to my childhood. I was always excited to go to 50's diners, I love the feel of the atomic era and everything it represented, it seems so much simpler a time. We decided on some cheese sticks and a small salad. The quality and the quantity were average. Nothing spectacular. However, the coffee shake I had blew me out of this world and reeled me right back in. It took me back to the days when I myself was a soda jerk, at a tiny little place that no longer exists. I love coffee and anything that coffee is in. It was hard for me to share. The total was fairly inexpensive and split between four it was really cheap. If I ever find myself starving and near another Ruby's, I would love to give one of the sandwiches or burgers a try. read more

From the moment we walked in met Erik Wowww already positive attitude recommended the fried green been . He was not kidding we ordered it and it was the best!!! But too little not fair I wanted more . Our server Wendy glad to have her ! Her customer service was the best ! I will definitely be back because of this two amazing individuals! I really enjoyed visiting this Ruby's. As always, the atmosphere was bright and cheerful. They have two trains going around tracks that are suspended from the ceiling. So cute. I went with some coworkers and we were all really happy with our food choices. I had a cheese burger and it was delicious. I love when they toast the bread - it makes such a difference. I substituted a salad for the fries and they have the really good watery ranch that I love so much. My one coworker had the Asian chicken salad and it looked amazing. I'm going to have to try that next time. I usually get the Cobb salad - it's one of the best. read more

When the atmosphere outshines the food, you have a problem. Came here with family for lunch. The shakes were good (had vanilla black cherry -- enough for two people) but my meal wasn't anything memorable. I had the albacore melt and wondered how something could be both dry and greasy at the same time. My son's macaroni and cheese tasted worse the kind you make from a box as it was hardly cheesy and flavorless. The coleslaw I subbed my fries for were left uneaten after two bites as it was heavy on the cabbage flavor and not much else. My aunts had the portobello mushroom burgers and both said they were really good, and my husband devoured his BLTA. Maybe it was just my meal and the kids meal that weren't very good. The atmosphere is clean and has a quirky 50's feel. My son was amused by the train that coasted along the ceiling and also loved the cardboard car they hand out to the kids. Our server's cheery attitude seemed forced but you could tell she was annoyed by something. I'd come here again to try breakfast or for shakes, but I don't think I'll order any sandwiches from them again. read more

I've eaten here twice, once when we had to evacuate San Diego area because of wildfires and we stayed in a hotel next to us. Another the morning after our wedding. Both times at this location have been pleasant. The waitress was very accommodating when I ordered a breakfast meal and told her I had to eat gluten free. For my brunch order side instead of getting toast she gave me cottage cheese which was perfect. And she didn't even charge me extra. So I was a fan of that experience. Great place to eat while shopping at the outlets. I ordered a Swiss Mushroom Turkey Burger. It was too oily even for a diner burger and eventually the burger and bun fell apart, but it was tasty and not dry (Which is common with turkey burgers). Ruby's is so good. Yes, they are a chain. But they are a great one. And this particular location is really good. They maintain the old school decor that some Ruby's have abandoned. And they have a cool train that circles the center divide above you. Sweet. My hubby and I always get the turkey burgers, which are cooked to perfection. Our kids have plenty of things to choose from on the kids' menu. Be ware: there is always a line. And for good reason. read more

Didn't have high expectations when I walked in, but it was pretty good! I had the turkey burger, side salad and sweet potato fries. The burger and salad were fine, but the sweet potato fries were to die for!! Best part is the fries are bottomless so you can eat as much of them as you'd like! read more

I like Ruby's Diner, the kids love coming here and getting a milk shake, we've tried two in the area and this was the nicer of the two. Our watiress kind of disappeared a couple of times and we had to wait for her to come back around. Food is good and the staff is pretty attentive, I think the food is better at other diner's and restaurants in the area. We only come to Ruby's or any other chain restaurant when the girls ask... Do you know what nostalgia feels like? I'm not just talking the theme here or the food. I'm talking the feeling. I live in Anaheim, CA, but my grandparents and uncles and aunts all mainly live in San Diego. So this is a great rest stop after driving two hours down or a nice place to build up for the long ride home. This has been our go to place everytime we go to San Diego. We came here after a week for my grandpa's funeral and after my grandma's 80th birthday. After Thanksgiving holidays and when christmas time comes around. I just love shopping the shops and getting a nice bite at Rubys. Service is always good and the food is pretty darn good. stop in and try it =] read more

I was never a fan of this place, but while shopping at the outlets at Carlsbad we worked up a appetite and decided to give it a go. Wow there burgers are way better than before. Now I don't know if its all locations or just this particular one. So speaking for this one I recommend it. The shake, fries, onion ring and cheese burger were very good. Very busy place and hardworking servers. The food is really nothing to write home about but generally edible. Some of our food was room temperature by the time we got it. I don't blame the servers because they are having a tough time keeping up with the constant flow of people. I might give it another try in the future. read more

A bit busier to the other Ruby's Diner Woodland Hills I reviewed. Staff was still nice and friendly. Restaurant nice and clean. Still got my favorite shake Double Dark Chocolate Chip. Still not thick enough but YUM! I ordered the BLTA (bacon lettuce tomato and avocado) side of fries. For me the sandwich was a bit on the small side......bigger bread and more bacon would have made it better. Still didn't have room for dessert. Maybe next time again. read more

We've eaten here about 10 times now. Parking is adequate, but taking into consideration the popularity of the outlet mall, parking not a major issue. The restaurant is very clean, I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be seated, staff is friendly, service is quick, food is reasonably priced and very good. I've been to many other Ruby's around southern California; some in OC, some in LA, but this one was my first in Carlsbad. I have to say..all the Ruby's are definitely a top-notch diner. I decided to write a review for this location because i thought that this place was very exceptional in their service and their food. I finished shopping at the outlets and was getting very hungry. Out of all the restaurants that were located in the outlets, i decided to go into this one. They sat us right away... and we were given our food promptly. No disappointment at all. Came here for breakfast and food was good. We had a very friendly server, she constantly asked an made sure if everything was good or if there's anything else we needed. But one negative thing that I didn't quite like was the hostess. Her name was Mackenziel(sp?) As soon as me and my bf came in she didn't even smile or anything. She grabbed the utensils and led us to a table and told us our server will be coming soon to serve us. I worked in the food industry for a quite while now. I know what the standards are when it comes to eating at restaurants or any food chains. One thing I noticed was that her service wasn't great and she needed to smile more and be more efficient into greeting or welcoming customers. read more

I love this place! I used to always come to the outlet, but walk right past this place, without ever trying it. After the first time I tried it, I have been back about 1-2 times every week! The Super Burger is my favorite and with garlic parmesan fries (extra $1 charge, but unlimited refills). I liked the decor, diner vibe, music, train that is circling below the ceiling. They also had a section where they have cartoons playing for the kids, which was nice. The food was good. I had a Denver omelette it was very good. I also tried the cinnamon french toast it was tasty. The pancakes were good also. I tried their Oreo milkshake it was so good and I also tried the peach lemonade....mmmm so good just a little too sweet maybe it just needed some more water... Had breakfast here the other day. Service was friendly and fast and the decor very cute. The food is comparable to Denny's or Coco's - good, but nothing fancy at all. It isn't too often that I want a traditional breakfast, but when I do, this place can meet that expectation. I did notice in the back of the menu, they have logos for all the suppliers that they use. I saw the list and thought, 'most things here come out of a can.' Not saying that is bad, but just be aware if you normally don't eat canned stuff at home, like us, it might be a let down. I had cinnamon swirled french toast with scrambled eggs and vegetarian sausage. It was fine. I don't use syrup and didn't need to because the cinnamon swirled french toast had enough sweet stuff in it. The scrambled eggs looked about equally yellow and white, in other words, they didn't scramble before the eggs hit the frying pan. The vegetarian sausage was fine and probably frozen morning star. I would eat here again, but not often as I normally don't eat this type of stuff. read more

We stopped here for a quick snack while shopping, and had a great time! Two of us had the cherry Coke, which was great; it came with a good amount of cherry flavoring, and a ton of cherries. We ordered calamari, which was good; it was strips, rather than rings, and was very tender. Shockingly great experience. Our family of four were visiting Legoland and hung out at the Outlets five minutes away. We were tired from driving and shopping and just wanted something quick and familiar. Arrived around 7pm and got seated within 5 minutes. Menu had typical diner selections. Mac and cheese for kids, tuna melt and salad for the wifee, and burger with all the trimmings plus garlic fries for me. Shakes all around. Tuna melt was comforting. Simple, tasty, warm and cheesy. Salad, was below average. Burger was solid. Fries were avaerage. Shakes were as expected. Normally would have given this place 3-4ish stars, but our waiter, Jason, was perfect. Got our orders in and delivered quickly, and just left us alone. The kid then snuck back to help the other wait staff with prepping silverware, but was looking up and checking on us constantly. The kid was just genuinely nice. Very refreshing to see that good guys, with solid manners, like him still around. A better system needs to be established! 2-3 families who were behind us were seated before even acknowledging us. When we pointed out that we were in line, the hostess stared blankly and proceeded to seat families. No apologies on her behalf. Did the hostess not think we would not see her unprofessional behaviorand as she complained to her co-worker why we needed to speak to a manager? Manager was apologetic, did want to make things right, but the damage was done. Our party was too upset, feeling marginalized to even want to eat. read more
