We were leaving to go home and the child hadn't eaten. We try for more healthy things than "fast food". My kid don't even know what McDonald's is...So thought maybe Ruby's would have something! My server, Kelvin, was my new idol. His awkwardness and delicate characteristics had me in awe after only seconds of our first interaction. He must've lived in a strict household with intense and tough parents which made him who he is today as a server. Finally, I've been to a Ruby's! I see them pretty frequently around Orange County, but had never actually stepped inside one. If you've never been to one before, it's probably best described as a cleaner and less kitschy version of Johnny Rockets. The menu was typical of what you'd expect though the prices were pretty high, with few main entrees less than $9. I guess you have to pay a premium to go a slight step above Johnny Rockets! I got the BLT with avocado and the bread was extremely crispy, though a little too greasy. I got an unusual stomach ache later that day, possibly from all the oils used in the bread and fries. The meal was pretty tasty, though. If I come to a Ruby's again, I would not get the BLT again; I'd probably get a burger, since that's what I saw most people had ordered and they occupy a large portion of the menu. The waitstaff was nice, though my buddy and I thought the food took way too long to come out. To be fair, it was lunch time, but there didn't appear to be a hectic lunch rush at the time we were there. read more

If you're looking for a burger and don't mind downing 1300+ calories, the Hickory Burger is the way to go. Make sure you ask for it to be served on a plate as it makes eating it a little bit easier. If you feel like jazzing up your fries, I get the Chili Fries. Their chili is delicious, you can really taste the beef in it. I also like their Buffalo Chicken Strips. If you like your strips crispy, ask for the sauce to be on the side so you can dip as you please. It also cuts down on the mess. read more

I was in town for a day only and wanted something convenient, quick, and filling while at the mall . It's a cute retro looking diner down to the uniforms. I couldn't decide between the turkey burger or the sliders. At the suggestion of my server, I went with the sliders, which I enjoyed. I usually hate onions but I gobbled these right up. Unlimited fries is an awesome idea but it's wasted on me, as I don't like to gorge on that stuff. Why not In & Out Burger, you ask? Because as I said I wanted something within reach. Glad I went in. Parked anyways and called the number provided to let them know I had arrived for curbside pickup. Turns out they don't offer. This Ruby's Diner seems like they did some remodling because it doesn't have that classic diner feel. The exterior and the interior looked like wood panels. I got a nothing fancy, nothing spectagular, nothing special all american burger with no cheese and sweet potatoe fries. Yes nothing special but I just wanted something in my stomach before my long drive home back to Torrance. On the plus side is that thank god I brought my Ipod Touch with me so I can take the advantage of a Yelp Check In that gives you a 10% discount...Nice. read more

We came for a Banana split and single serving ice cream cone. Sat down and ordered and then waited and waited and waited some more. A couple comes in and is seated after us and orders food, we still wait. Our check arrives, we still wait for our ice cream. Neighbors cooked hot food arrives and we are still waiting for our ice cream. I was flabbergasted! It's soft serve, already made and doesn't even have to be prepared how could it take this long. Nobody seemed seemed to care. The manager stood by and sees our bill sitting in our table and asks how our food was. We mention that we haven't had recurved our food yet.... his response - he looks at our bill and says " oh you just ordered ice cream, hope you will join us again next time and order food." We will NOT be back! Ice cream finally arrives and it's melted. No apology given just an excuse that their ice cream person was backed up. I couldn't find one positive thing to say. My experience was OK. Food tasted fine, though the fries were a little thin and over-fried, server was friendly, and nobody got food poisoning. My group had two kids under three in tote (it was a family lunch), so Ruby's is pretty much our only option on Crystal Court. If I was by myself or with a friend, there's like 10 places that are better for the same price essentially. As a side note - am I the only one who likes the new decor? It seems they take the 40's theme to heart at this location. The quality of service is substandard. The business level was low upon arrival and increased to moderate by the time I left 35 minutes later. The most heinous incident of the evening occurring after my drink glass fell over and ice spilt across the table. The food runner had just served the food to our table. She looked at the mess, grabbed a stack of napkins and tossed them on the table before walking away. She did not offer to help, nor did she suggest sending someone over to clean the mess. My party of two consisted of a small child and myself. When we sat down for dinner, there was a used jelly foil lid on the table and no jelly insight. I moved the foil lid to the edge of the table believing that our server, Juan, would see it whenever he reappeared to our table and would remove it. Used jelly foil, my straw wrapper, and the debris from the child's activity sat on the table the majority of our visit and was not removed until I complained to the manager. The service was at a snail's pace and did not meet minimum basic customer service standards, let alone food service industry standards. It took 10 minutes to receive a premixed drink and a child's cup of water. The server never offered or brought us water. Juan, the server, acted annoyed when I asked about the ingredients in one of their signature beverages. It was clear to me that my son and I were not welcome at that establishment. The food arrived and was lukewarm. When I asked for the manager, Edward, the manager by-passed my table and began inquiring with another guest about their visit. When I expressed my discontent, the manager, never apologised and instead offered to comp my drink and give free fries. My complaint was never about getting free food. The despicable treatment experienced deserves at minimum an apology and I should have left shortly after sitting down. One thing is for sure. I will not return to this Ruby's read more

A Short&Sweet Review..... Shorter than most reviews and sweeter than a quick tip. SHORT (not so great....) 1. Be careful not to overlook the fine details of the calorie counts. I was about to order the healthy burger because it stated 600 calories but its without the burger! 2. Everything is just so fattening... But delish. This joint satisfies all carbs/sweet/deep fried addictions...at least mine. SWEET! (The addictions) 1. Pleasant and great servers...a smile does make my day. 2. They serve breakfast! The corn beef hash did not taste like it came out of a can. The meal came with two eggs and a choice of English muffin or toast. 3. The beignets were phenomenal! After a half day of after Christmas shopping, stopped here for a late afternoon lunch with a couple of buddies of mine. Convenient that this Ruby's is located at my favorite So Cal shopping centers....South Coast Plaza! It was around 3 pm and the place was fairly packed but we got seated right away. After we got our menus, it took almost 10 minutes before our waitress took our order. The 3 of us were starving from shopping and walking around South Coast. I don't think I'm exaggerating, and I don't think it was because we were so hungry, but from the time our order was taken, it was a good 20 minutes before we got our food! Our waitress wasn't all that attentive either. So for service alone, I'd rate this a 2. I had the cheeseburger with cheddar, which came with lettuce and tomato, and I had mustard instead of the Ruby sauce. The bun was nicely toasted. And the burger was Ruby good. I also ordered the garlic fries. They were the bomb...with lots of crushed garlic. And the fries were bottom less. Although it did take our waitress along time to get my second order of garlic fries, which came after I was finished with my burger. We all had to ask our waitress for refills on our cokes and iced teas, which again, our waitress wasn't very attentive to our table. For food, Ruby rates a solid 4 star. So I'll have to average this was the poor slow inattentive service, giving Ruby's a 3 star. read more

The kids seem to really enjoy the 1940s decor, the cutesy costumes of the staff, the mouth watering milkshakes, and the picture of the skankalicious waitress on the front page of the menu with long legs, a short skirt, and a monstrous pair of double Ds!! Saaayyy whaat?! This was my first time at Ruby's Diner and I was satisfied with my meal. We ordered the Spicy Jalapeno Jack Cheese Sticks as an appetizer and these little things pack a surprising punch! They were delicious and hot hot hot! Make sure you have a full glass of water! (My tolerance for spicy food is very minimal... so this might seem like an exaggeration to some people). I opted for the RubyMelt and Garlic fries as my entree. It's hard not to be satisfied with the combination of meat, cheese, onions, and garlic!! RubyMelt: This was probably one of the larger patty melts that I've ever seen!
