Their new burrito take out menu is to die for. Shouldn't be surprising at all, but having a burrito 90% filled with amazingly cooked meat is such a treat. Went to dinner as a friend recommended we try and everything was delicious! We would go back for the focaccia bread alone. My husband had the meatloaf and it had so much flavor and I had the butter roasted cod and it was the best meal I've had in a long time. Compliments to the chefs! Their lunch menu is diverse with plenty of options at great prices. The Tuna Melt was a great balance of acidity and tang on a Pullman wheat/grain bread. The Báhn Mì had a burst of flavors where the tofu was perfectly charred and salted. The sauce for the Báhn Mì went well with the picked vegetables. The only suggestion that I have with this sandwich is to get the baguette a bit crispier on the outside to reach that authentic Vietnamese style. Other than that, the sandwich is still a 5/5. I can't say too much about the ambiance of the restaurant. When I went, it was late lunch (3:30pm). There was minimal amount of people dining in at this time. However, by the time we were leaving, it was getting busy for dinner service. The way the restaurant is set it and the positioning of the tables seemed very intimate enough to satisfy a great date-night. The decor and the sound of the restaurant felt very approachable with an elevate feel without any stuffy-ness that comes with fine-dinning. I love this spot, low key for a few friends or a good date spot that your special person hasn't been to. Casual vibe but still fancy enough for a date. Enjoy your wine with a beanie, share that delicious gnocchi with your girlfriends, or chow down on some solid burgers with the homies. The menu is always changing but you generally can't go wrong with anything here. The menu isn't too adventurous but there's always a few interesting items on the menu for that bougie water. It's not the biggest restaurant so a group of more than 4 might be tight. The lighting is always dim here to get real sensual with whoever you're with so if you're trying to take some bday pics, take it outside or at riverfront park if the weather is nice. Typical plates run about 12-17 bucks as a heads up. Support local business! Share this spot with others! Side note, I came here at 10 pm during a huge snow day and they were still staying loyal to customers and keeping their doors open to 12 am, which is their posted hours. I loved the Ruins at the Monroe location- they always had reliably delicious food, and substantial vegan options. We went out to dinner the other night at the new location, and it is definitely a different vibe now. The space is beautiful, and the dish ware was gorgeous (I noticed it's all by a local potter). The hummus & flatbread appetizer we got was amazing. It tasted fresh and handmade. However, the entree was disappointing. There was only one thing on the menu that could be modified to be vegan- a tofu & veggie dish. They did offer to make a veggie stew, but I went with the tofu. It was supposed to be pesto crusted, but since that was not vegan, they lightly seared the tofu, which was a super thick soft block. It literally tasted like a block of raw tofu, and only the carrots were edible, the rest of the veggies weren't cooked enough. For a $20 dish, i expected more. I know the menu always changes, so hopefully more vegan options will be added in the future. read more

Never fails to disappoint A few years ago I would brag about this place to the fairest corner of the world. Today, I'm embarrassed to even fall for the trap again and again. From fried chicken coming out cold to closing 10 minutes before advertised closing time, this place has let me down more times than it has satisfied me now. Stopped in here for a bite before heading down town and damn, was I impressed. We ordered the Mac and cheese and the babaganoush! Both were outstanding. Since we had split what we ate we left only paying $13 each so it's extremely reasonable. The menu, aside from the Mac and cheese, was a list compiled of dishes I haven't seen anywhere else. We had an amazingly delicious and unusual dinner at Ruins last night. The place is hard to find. There is inadequate signage for sure. But once you have found the location, you are in for a treat! The margarita-like cocktail I ordered was delicious. I followed that with the beet salad! Which was close to perfection! The three of us shared the chorizo appetizer and loved it. My entree was the lamb shank. It was perfectly prepared and garnished with interesting and scrumptious veggies. My husband and son had the chicken entree which was combined with chorizo and served on a bed of beans. Interesting combinations of tastes in all the dishes we ordered. We were too full for dessert. It was standing room only on McRuins night on New Years Eve which was a good sign to us. After a short wait, a table opened up, we sat down to an amazing meal and evening. Keeping with the theme, we worked our way up to the counter to order. Lentil Burgers were vegan from the start, and a little pleading found our way into a vegan bánh mì. The lentil burger fell apart on us a little, but had great flavor. The banh mì had a marinated tofu, crunchy pickled carrots and dikon. The fries were perfectly fried and served in a paper-lined basket. Great beers were on tap and for a great price. Despite how busy they were, our orders came out made to order and perfectly prepared. Just as well since the cornbread was so tough I couldn't bite into it and the soft cooked egg with the tough asparagus was cold. How in the world is this chef a semi-finalist for a James Beard award this year? Here's hoping he's "always a bridesmaid and never a bride." I've been by a few more times since this last review. Taco Tuesdays have been excellent! They don't always have the same options for tacos or other items and although the cost has gone from $8 to $9 for three tacos, they're still good. The fish tacos are my favorite. They had a warm corn salad one time that was really delicious! I also came to eat their McRuins menu and that was mostly a big hit. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and it was like McDonald's, but bigger and tastier! The dirty fries were really oily and hard. Not my thing. I also came by for their Chinese menu. Half of the items were good and half were disappointing in different ways. Also we had the worst service ever that night to the point of considering not tipping, but we learned the tips gets split between all the servers so we tipped the minimum. Summation: out of the many times I've eaten here, food is consistently delicious and creative, service is generally good, prices are decent and they're open later than most other places. read more

Ruins is one of the very best restaurants in town. Period. The service is always polite and knowledgeable but what makes Ruins stand out is how delicious the food is. Almost every plate I've had there has been perfection. I've been there on several occasions and each is better than the last. When I went there during restaurant week the cooks had over-salted our fries and without saying anything to us they came out with a new plate of fries and said "so sorry. We think we over salted the first plate here's a new one." That shows, to me, a high standard of excellence. On our most recent trip, which was their Italian menu, I had the best plate of risotto ever. It was a nettle risotto with pesto and perfectly cooked shrimp. Food: solidly good. I had the chicken salad with tarragon and arugula on ciabatta. Husband had the meatloaf sandwich and really enjoyed it. Good flavors, good size, good portion for the price. We are interested in trying the dinner menu. Beverage: I tried the house-made soda --ginger tangerine -- because why not? It was a bit weak but cool presentation. Service: our waiter was great - attentive without hovering, and helpful in choosing from the menu. Ambience: I enjoyed the old diner feel, the old books, etc. I was NOT thrilled with the actual old dirt/grunge. The table itself was clean but the floors were not and the bathroom! dark, dingy, smelly, dirty toilet, overflowing trash...an air freshener, some elbow grease, and more light would make a world of difference - this is where they lost points from me. Don't believe the hype; if this place used to be good, it certainly isn't anymore. They take the prize of worst dining experience I have ever had. Service - I'm not sure they even know the meaning of the word. To start, my friend ordered a wine and when it came out the glass was cracked the whole way through; when she pointed it out, the waitress seemed annoyed. Then, three people at our table received their food, slowly ate, and then waited 20 minutes while my friend and I waited for our food. During this time, the staff was clearly avoiding us (the restaurant was not busy), we had no water and couldn't even get their attention to see why the food wasn't there or if they had forgotten it. This leads us to Food - the flavors were okay, not fabulous, but fine. However, the sausage I ordered was raw in the middle; not a little pink, literally mushy raw. I tried to eat a bite just in case that was how it was meant to be, but it had the slimy texture of uncooked meat. The staff never came by to ask how the food was, so I just ate my sides and left the sausage for when they finally came around. When she asked to clear our plates, I showed her the raw sausage and asked if it was supposed to be like that. She took it back to the kitchen and told me they would make me a new one and I asked if it would take another half hour; she snarked "hopefully not." Later she brought back my same sausage that was just pan fried til it was basically jerky. Price - expect at minimum $30 if you want both an unsafe meal and drink with service that makes you wonder if you did something to piss them off. read more

Ruins is divey at first glance. There's an eccentrically hipster vibe to it. It's actually a small room with a few tables and a bar. The dining concept here is centered around sharing plates, similar to tapas, so that you get some of this and some of that. They do a fine job at that. I liked the blackened trout with collard greens. Also, the shrimp + ham + grits were savory good. They apparently have a rotating menu to keep things fresh and creative. The folks here are very attentive and personable. They do a great job at bringing it all together to make the place seem warm and inviting. I'm not too familiar with the food scene in Spokane, but Ruins offers some tastefully interesting plates that might be worth a visit if you're in the 509. read more

RUINS for the WIN! Have you ever wanted a completely new experience when ordering food and drinks designed to fit your needs? I thought I might have been out of my league while dining at this craft beer pub (in the 'hood, yo!) but quickly discovered that tasty treats are easy found on the menu. I showed up on taco night, the menu was hand written on a poster board and we had a few choices for taco fillings. Our drinks arrived quickly and our food came out and was very tasty. I'd venture back and try new plates whenever I'm in this part of town (near the county jail) and its nicely tucked off the main thoroughfare of the Monroe St revitalization effort from a few years back. read more

OK, this place is amazing and one of my favorite places in Spokane. I can't really say what I love the most because every time I have gone there is a different menu! The rotating menu that they have adds to my love for this place ! BUT it also makes me a little sad when I absolutely love something from a menu and the next time I go it's not offered. I have watched triple D several times and my sister lives in Idaho and I fly into Spokane to visit and put this on my bucket list. I was very disappointed with my food and the service. My bacon was raw and my nephew's hamburger was raw also. The only sandwich that was good was my niece who ordered the shrimp poor boy. The waiter did not ask how he wanted his hamburger cooked and we had to send the sandwich back. I also sent back my turkey bacon sandwich because the bacon was raw. Also it was pretty pricey without any sides; the french fries cost us $3.00 additional for each basket. I went to the restroom and the hallway was dark and the bathroom was not clean. I will not recommend this restaurant to my family or friends that live in the area or who plan to visit Spokane. read more

Each sandwich is about $8 and they are served on paper products. In a city saturated with restaurants, Ruins really stands out- and it's not just because of their blue exterior. They offer a rotating menu that changes with the seasons so you are sure to always get to try something different. Their lunch menu offers around 10 sandwich options with a couple different sides. We ordered the Ahi tuna and the cold fried chicken sandwich with the brussels sprouts and french fries as sides. This was the best Ahi I have ever had. It literally melted in my mouth. The fish was so flaky and warm and mmmm mm yum! The cold fried chicken sandwich comes with pickled onions and a spicy sriracha sauce. Both sandwiches are served on toasted, soft buns. The french fry portion was huge and the brussels sprouts were shredded which made them a lot easier to eat and each bite was smothered with flavor. No salt or pepper necessary. Another great feature about Ruins is their drink menu. They have a fantastic assortment of fresh made sodas, sparkling water, lemonade, tea, etc. We tried the fresh squeezed lemonade and the pomegranate soda. The lemonade was VERY tart without much sugar, and I couldn't get enough. The Pomegranate soda was refreshing and had a bitter aftertaste. I read a review online about Ruins being fantastic so thought we'd give it a try. We went on a Friday at 4:30. The lady behind the bar asked if we had a reservation which we did not. She said let me see if we can seat you..there were literally 2 other patrons in the restaurant. She came back a few minutes later and seated us in a kind of booth (painted plywood, no cushion, no back). The service after her was great. The food came out very shortly after we ordered but unfortunately it didn't come out hot. My husband ordered the meatloaf which he said would have been excellent if it had been served hot. It was somewhat warm, the potatoes were cold. I ordered the braised pork which was also barely warm. While we were eating, 2 other couples were seated behind us. We overheard them discussing the hard bench seats as well. One couple asked to be moved and the other couple swapped seats with each other so one could sit in the chair rather than on the plywood bench. All in all not a great experience. read more

I've been here ~4 times for lunch within the last 2 months since I work nearby. It started out great and food was delicious. The last two visits however have left a lot to be desired. Tried Ruins a year ago and it was so so. Went to dinner tonight with my family (6 of us) and had another bad experience. First off, two of the meals were cold and had to be sent back. The risotto had no flavor and the cauliflower was overcooked and mushy. The server was nice but gave horrible service. At the end of the meal he only asked how the meals were that were not returned. I had the cauliflower and wasn't even asked how it was. It took over two hours for our dinner. We will never dine here again. I would highly recommend not spending your time or money at this establishment. They truly named it right, our night was a "Ruin". This is definitely not an award winning restaurant. read more

I really like the divey feel of Ruins. I also liked how all the staff felt really close to one another like real friends and also had obvious close bonds with some of the patrons. The lighting was super dim and the whole feel was very "in". I loved the two drinks we got and think that the bar is really where it is at. I could see myself coming back for some cocktails for sure. The menu is rotating. It was an asian theme and sadly I was very disappointed with what we ended up with. I ordered the fried chicken. Nowhere did it indicated that it would be covered in what was sadly basically Ketchup with then drizzled honey. I hate hate hate Ketchup and tomatoes so this was a sad realization. My husband likes Ketchup, but alas thought the meal tasted very cheap and weird as well. He ordered a noodle dish that wasn't terrible, but only contained about 6 bigs for around 12 dollars. The noodles also sadly didn't taste like anything special. We maybe came on an off week, or even an off night. Someone I really trust recommended this place and I am sure we just had a bad fluke experience. I would for sure give it another shot. I just wasn't wowed like I thought I might be. A very cool addition to the restaurant scene in this neighborhood (just up the road from Kendall Yards and a stone's throw from Milford's and Bruncheonette). The food in this place is well thought-out and ingredients are high-quality. The dishes we had were outstanding (omelette and meatloaf with sunny-side-up eggs and potatoes). The only reason why I'd refrain from the 5 star is that the service was a tad slow. We went at 9:30am on a Saturday and were two of only 6 people in the place. Had a great curbside pick up dinner last night. I'd call this a Japanese fusion menu. We had the Tonkotssu Ramen, Yakisoba Carbonara, Tanteman and the Black Vinegar Greenbeans. Everything was delicious with complex flavors. It was ready exactly when we asked to pick up and staff was grateful for our business. The food was cold. The flavors are there but in every dish wasn't executed the way it should be. Our table of 4 had duck breast, meatloaf, and 2 orders of Gnocchi. The duck breast was hot. The mole is served cold. The butternut squash was lukewarm. The gnocchi was cold but the flavor of the meat sauce was average. The gnocchi itself was a little dense, could have been a little more pillowy. For homemade we were hoping for better. The meatloaf was flavored well but it was cold and the mash potatoes was cold and runny. The atmosphere is lacking. With a few corrections it has potential. read more
