So I'm in town for business and went on yelp and wanted to try to find something good to eat. I came across this place and proceeded to read the reviews prior to reading I really wanted some gumbo. After reading the very first review, where a gentleman was convinced to go here by the bouncer and was not disappointed. I decided to listen to the review because he said it was the best gumbo he's had. He was not wrong I went here yesterday and I'm back here today for lunch this is so freaking good their alligator gumbo is fantastic I didn't try anything else bought that for two days and that should say some thing. Service and staff is super helpful and I highly recommend this place if I can give it another star to make it 6/5* I would. So we were walking on Beale Street for Father's Day and a guy was out from asking costumers to dine in. We were looking for somewhere to anyway, so why not give them a try!? We decided to go with a platter. What a great way to try a plethora of menu items at one time for $20! We had fried pickles, 3 different kind of wings, chicken tenders, barbecue nachos, fried sausages, and cube cheese!!! OMG we were more than pleased! My husband also got the 1/2 lb burger with American cheese and fries (not thinking that the platter would be as huge as it was or he was taking advantage of the fact it was Father's Day and the bill was on me, lol). Music was good but food was bland and boring. We were given only a plastic spoon and fork for grilled chicken that definitely needed to be cut. So we are just knawing on our chicken which is topped with some strange textured ham and a piece of Kraft Swiss cheese. Coleslaw tasted like cleaner. Took forever for the food and the check. 9.9% tax. Just get something simple like the nachos and enjoy the music. Wouldn't recommend this place for dinner. Memphis blues are the trademarks that have made Rum Boogie Cafe the cornerstone, literally at the corner of Beale Street and Highway 61, of Beale Street for more than 35 years! They advertise serving Championship Gumbo, Memphis-style BBQ, hickory-smoked ribs, red beans and rice, Mississippi farm-raised fried catfish, the Bourbon BBQ Beale Burger, and blue-plate lunch specials but it's my food experience food has been limited and not terribly impressed but I go here for the live blues music that you can count on seven nights a week! The atmosphere, well being a guitar player I got to say that I'm pretty impressed their collection with more that 200 autographed guitars from some of the greatest performers in the music biz including Elvis, Bo Diddley, Joe Walsh, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Billy Joel, Rufus Thomas, Billy Gibbons, Albert Collins, Bon Jovi, Leon Russell, Carl Perkins, Booker T and the MGs, Luther Ingram, Ike Turner, Sting, Scotty Moore, The Memphis Horns, Gregg Allman, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith and the list goes on. Beyond the guitar porn this is the quintessential Memphis motif with dollar bills on the wall, posters and memorabilia everywhere. I could tell you much more but you really need to check it out, at least once, because everyone seems to have they're own takeaway and mine is "I'm here for the music". The food that I have had is average, at best, but the drinks are always very good (beware the Hurricane) and the service is pretty good, friendly and importantly they're not in any hurry to push you out when nursing our drinks :-) By the way, there is a good range of beers, both local and domestic. Bottom line: $5 gets you into both sides of the bar to see 2 bands at night, I go for the music and libations and grab a munchie or two along the ride. Was looking for a quick bite and hopefully catch some tunes. Well I found it. Small quint I had a table right in front of the band. It was a really cool fun night. Service was pretty good, I had a few beers and decided to grab a little grub. There was a good amount of selections on the menu. I really wanted to taste as much as I could since I was only there for one night. I opted for the gator gumbo and red beans and rice. They were both ridiculously amazing. Unfortunately they were so rob sticking g good at ate both completely and it filled me up. I say unfortunately cause there's still a list I want to try. The table next to me had ordered bbq smoked jumbo wings. I was staring so hard I was hopi g they would have offered me once since there was no way I could have eaten the whole order. We visited the rum boogie several times. This is a good place to hear great music. We heard authentic blues to local bands. We didn't eat there but they had food. The drinks were good and cover charge was either $2 or $5. This for us was one of the best bars on Beale st. Right next door is a smoking bar connected to rum boogie if your a smoker. read more

SO MUCH FUN! We walked in on a whim on a Tuesday night just hoping for somewhere to have some drinks and listen to some good live music and we are so glad we found the place. We spent a few hours here listening to a great local band and had some drinks. The wait staff was quick and attentive and the drinks were all pretty strong.. we tried a few different ones, but my favorite was the voodu love child! We didn't order any food, but our 'neighbor' was eating the ribs and he said they were great. We will definitely be back next time we are In town! Really cool spot me and my boyfriend came to when we were in town on vacation. The live music, the drinks, the environment was so good. The band that was playing at the time had an amazing pianist guy playing on the keyboard, he really rocked the keyboard. The decor was pretty cool too, with all types of guitars hanging up with all different bands on them. Me and my boyfriend came in for dinner too and the food was really good. There were COVID19 precautions in place which was cool, but the place closed sooo early! They had last call right after I ordered my second drink. They ended up closing at 9pm when the band finished up, which was a bummer, because I thought the other bars didnt close till 10 due to the COVID19. Questioning the below par rating for Rum Boogie Cafe! My recent stop, during Covid, was certainly not their usual standard I'm sure! This is quite the unique place in that it's a conversation piece for sure! With guitars hanging from the ceiling throughout from famous performers, and other cool eclectic things, it's my kinda place for sure! You couldn't be in Memphis and not try the ribs, right? So a rack of ribs it was! With nearly nobody in the place, I was skeptical about the quality of the ribs. To my surprise they were actually really good! I always get ribs with nothing more than a dry rub as I don't want the quality of the smoking process to be masked by the bbq sauce. An excellent dry rub, tender meat that took little effort to remove from the bones, and an excellent bbq sauce that made the experience worthy of the stop! I hope that things recover here quickly as it would be a shame for a place as cool as Rum Boogie to not survive the pandemic! read more

Slow start to a great night! This place was perfect after a long three days of travel & cancelled flights! It was pretty slow when we first got there but Shy, the bartender was welcoming and so chill. She recommended the fried green tomatoes, so that and a chicken salad it was! Holy amazing! As the night progressed, there were two sides of different music. One more club rock blues, the band was interactive and fun. The other side, harmonicas, keyboard and bass really jazzed up the stage. I just wanted to share experience. Stopped in to have dinner around 6:45. Around 7 music began and decided to stay, continue dinner with a few cocktails and enjoy the entertainment. Around 8-8:30 our waiter stopped by table and handed us two wrist bands and told us in case we leave or wanted to check out their venue next door at The Blues Hall or if we just wanted to leave and come back in general, this would allow. We said thanks and continued eating. There may have been at most 3 couples in Restaurant who were also dining. 30 min later we decided to ask for our check and wanted to move on to the next place before heading home. Upon reviewing my tab while paying, I noticed they charged an additional charge of $10 for cover on a Wednesday without explanation. So I asked the staff why I was charged halfway through my meal a cover especially since we were not staying. They said it was policy and I had to pay regardless if I was staying or leaving. So I say this... Beware of their underhanded ways of up charging customers just to stop by and dine in. I will never go back and is the first time I have ever experienced blatant add on's after frequenting this place for the last 20 years. I'm not sure if this is the new ownership policy or just wanting to maximize revenue from the 10 people that actually showed up on a Wednesday night? What I can tell you after 30 years of stopping in to Rum Boogie Cafe from time to time ended after Wednesday night's bs. Their only saving grace for me was the music. This is a great place in the middle of Beale Street on the corner. It's actually two seperate bars playing two types of music. The day we went the snapper smaller place was playing soul music and on the Stax stage they were playing blues. The Blues band was actually or tour guide on Backbeat Tours the Mojo music singing tour and he was sooo funny and played well. This day he was playing a mean harmonic and spoons. It was a great show! A cool place to hangout, sample local food, drink and listen to live music. I tried their Red Beans gumbo, as well as the Gator gumbo. They were both very good, it was my first time ever eating alligator meat, and to tell the truth you can hardly taste any meat since the gumbo had only few chunks, and the spicy seasoning was so strong that you could hardly taste anything else. Order an appetizer platter. It took forever. When it came out most everything was good. The fried pickles however where crispy and not edible. We told the manager and hoped he would take a few bucks off. We were done with what we enjoyed on the platter and thought we would take the good stuff home. The manager said he would take the whole thing off the check and clear the food off the table which was fine with us. I thought it was more than fair. We ate our fill and didn't have to pay, it was very generous. So much so, we ordered two more drinks to walk around with. My wife had a fruity mixed drink which was really good. The entertainment here is also really good. The second best place we found on Beale. We didn't mind paying the $5 cover charge. read more

Best place in Beale street! This one of the only places we could get in without a long line. They had live music and the band was great! We sat a table right next to the bar so we had great service and people checking on our drinks a lot! All of the bars are really "screwing up" with the COVID rules and making people wait in long lines outside in the cold, the other bars seemed run down and didn't have good music.
