Honestly the ball was dropped Big time on their end. My service contract is scheduled on automatic for propane replenishment. It appears that the system failed big time and I'm currently without heat. I called the emergency after hrs service and explained that there's a new born along with elder in the home and this requires an emergency. I was told this will be addressed but no ETA can be provided. Now fast forward 9hrs later and my property is still without heat. The contract states auto delivery and I haven't received a delivery since Jan 13 2026. Clearly a system error occured and now my entire family is suffering due to their negligence. No one I've spoken to seem to empathize; nor understand how important this is. Its 27 degrees out side and my thermostat inside is dropping lower and lower by the hour. I've, personally, been a customer for over a quarter of a century (my family owned the home for another twenty years before that) and I'd never had a problem with them until now. They supply our propane which fuels my kitchen stove/oven as well as a rarely-used fireplace downstairs. They delivered today while I was cooking and I thought nothing of it when they showed up (again, over twenty five years I've been using them). About two hours later, my lower oven wouldn't preheat beyond 240 degrees. I tested the spaghetti squash I'd recently removed from it and it was still firm and only somewhat hot after nearly an hour in a supposed 400 degree oven. I panicked because my upper oven had already been giving me trouble and the holiday was just around the corner! I can't feed 20 people with only a toaster oven! When my stove wouldn't ignite, thankfully I was savvy enough to go outside and check the tank (right after I sent a frantic text to my husband) to discover that the delivery driver hadn't turned the valve back on. It's a simple thing that set my cooking schedule back by an hour. Could have been catastrophic if it was a week later and if I was more reliant on my husband to problem-solve (or if I didn't have a husband at all). Simple, but pretty damned important! read more

No heat on the first snow storm of the season.and of course it's on a sunday... A power surge took out my boiler's electrical components... On the phone with the technician he wanted to make sure that we walked through the issue before he had to bill me for an emergency visit. This was hugely appreciated. However I did need a technician to visit. Along comes John...spent the next two hours fixing my issue and making sure all was correct. He explained everything from the components to the billing. He was very helpful, understanding, pleasant, knowledge. He fixed our issue, tidied up and tested to make sure we are good. I cannot say enough good about him. read more

I called early in the week (Tuesday) and paid ahead of time for a gas delivery. When I called, I explained to her we were very low at about 20-30% and she assure me I would get a delivery. When no one showed up by Thursday, I called again and was advised that they would be there now on Saturday and that I would be 2nd on the list. Again, I explained to them we were very low and she said that it should be okay till Saturday. On Saturday it snowed and I waited and no one showed up. I called about noon and it said the office was close and press 1 for emergency I then was forwarded to the answering service and was told they may still show up but they didn't know and that they are not allowed to make any emergency call to them unless I was on automatic delivery. I explained that I was on automatic delivery before but because we had a credit at one time and we were not needing automatic delivery and they then told us to just call when we need it. They said they weren't allowed to take a message. I still don't understand how they could treat customers like this especially we are seniors and have medical issues. When I called back again later in the afternoon and said again no one showed up and insisted that they forward a message, the answering service said now they will forward a message but I will not get an answer till Monday. I had to then put the thermostat to 50-55 to try and conserve till Monday, which was difficult considering the weather outside was about 20 degrees. I was also not able to cook or shower and was also concerned that the system would shut down or cause damage if it ran out. This is not how customers should be treated/neglected. read more

I have worked with Rural Fuels for propane needs for 7 years and now have them for oil as well. A few years ago, they installed a gas burning fireplace which helps to generate heat in the house, and their customer service has always been awesome. A few months ago, I changed over to them for oil and last week, they installed an Ascent boiler for me. My older boiler was well past its prime and had to be replaced. I've had Rural Fuels for about 10 years now and I absolutely love them. I recently had a service call and I have to say that the technician was awesome. He answered all my questions and was very professional. He put me at ease on a couple of issues/questions I had. I have called numerous times and I have to say that everyone I've spoken with is extremely friendly. I'm on an auto delivery and they are spot on when I need propane. Any time I call to tell them that I think I need a delivery they have always responded right away. I really wish any company I have to deal with is like Rural. read more

Where do I even begin? This company has gone to hell...fast! I ordered 100 gal. which is all I have ever ordered at one time for the past 7 years over the phone, paid immediately with a credit card and was charged for 100 gallons. Two days later, the driver dumps 125 gallons in my tank undenounced to me. A few weeks later I get a 'past due' notice in the mail demanding payment for the un ordered extra 25 gallons. So, I call and speak to a representative and explain that I ordered my usual 100 gal., paid for my usual 100 gal. and perhaps you need to go after your driver for the extra cost as this may help him (who made the mistake) pay closer attention to what he's doing! Or, at the very least, go to Ocean State Job Lot and buy him a $3.00 pair of cheaters.. So, I decide to make a compromise. As I'm in the market for a new home and don't know how long I'm going to be here I agree to pay for the extra 25 gallons if and when I get to that level in my tank. I think that is very fair. Next month, another past due notice. Another call to this flushing toilet of a company. Now, another woman tells me that since 'I'm enjoying the propane in my tank, I'm liable for THEIR MISTAKE'! I ask her "If you go to a gas station, hand the attendant a $10.00 bill and tell him 'give me ten dollars regular', and he pumps $15.00 worth of fuel into your tank, who's fault is it? " her "gee, well I a, you know everyone makes mistakes...but your going to use the gas anyway...so" I ask her if "Well, your going to use the gas anyway so pay us for it now" is an acceptable answer/excuse? Crickets!!! So, once again I agree to pay for the fuel WHEN I GET TO THE AMOUNT THEY OVER FILLED MY TANK. Settled?? NOOOOOOO This month I get the notice that they are about to hand me over to a credit collection agency FOR THE AMOUNT THAT THEY OVERFILLED MY TANK. FUEL I NEVER ORDERED....FOR THE AMOUNT THAT I AGREED TO PAY FOR WHEN I GET DOWN TO THAT LEVEL!! BUYER BEWARE: RURAL FUEL IS ONE SHADY COMPANY! I HAVE TO WONDER...HOW MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS GOT 'ACCIDENTLY' OVERFILLED THAT DAY, WEEK OR MONTH? HOW MANY SUCKERS JUST WENT AHEAD AND PAID FOR SOMETHING THEY NEVER ORDERED. We ran out of propane on a Saturday. I was so grateful when they made an emergency visit for my family only a few hours after calling them in a panic. I've been using Rural Fuel since I bought my house in Westport over 8 years ago. I own my tank so perhaps that makes a difference, but they are reliable, have competitive prices (or I would have another company fill my tank), and they have been very helpful in providing me with connections to my grill and also the regular tank inspections needed. People I've dealt with are very friendly and aim to please. Only reason I don't give 5 stars is that I don't use them often - only every 2-3 years when I need a tank top up or I need some assistance. I will call them again in 2021 for more propane and also some assistance with propane generator hook up. read more

This company is a total ripoff! I prepaid almost one thousand dollars at a set price to set me up for the winter at a place I spent less than a week in. I kept the heat at 50 so as not to freeze pipes. Took them six weeks to go through that money and I've been receiving bills of more than $400 a month since. AND WE ARE NOT EVEN USING THE PLACE! They explain that the house is colder when warm bodies aren't present to heat it. Cannot wait to find another supplier but waiting until Spring. There is something about this company I don't trust. Recently bought a house in Easton Rural Fuels, without any notification, took our propane tank away, while we were away!!! When I called the office, they couldn't care less.... Stay away !!! And buy your own tank, so you are not dependent on an unscrupulous propane company... If you don't buy the tank, you eventually pay an exorbitant amount for the tank, and overpay for the propane... Worst company I've ever dealt with. I got the story from an employee. We dealt with the old company with great owners for almost two decades. Then their kids took over. Like many spoiled, lazy young people they only cared about squeezing money out of their customers. In 2017 they hounded me for $2.00 I didn't owe. After decades. I asked for proof that I owed the money. Crickets. I cancelled my service, bought my own tank and get my propane where I damn well please. Three years later they claim I owe a tank rental fee. After laughing in their face I asked for proof. Crickets. They filed suit in small claims for $200. Still waiting for that proof. This company had no place to go but down, and I'm guessing they are desperate for money. There are plenty of companies out there who aren't dirtbags. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. Not very competitive oil prices. The people who come for service are not professional. They want to just chit chat rather than work, I was also charged for the half hour, the service guy spent sitting in my drive way after doing nothing in the 1.75 hours of said tune-up. They tuned up nothing and never recorded efficiency percentage. People told me to use Sippin but it was my mistake to use Rural, I just chose Rural because their sales person Renne was a nice person to deal with initially. read more

I had fallen ill with chronic congestive heart failure a year ago and lost my ability to work. They have been nothing but a nightmare to deal with. Had to file for bankruptcy. I was stuck in bed and we ran out of fuel for heat in December waiting to get approved for heat assistance. I explained to them I was sick in bed and offered to pay for a pre-delivery with a prepaid giftcard the nurses gave. They wouldn't even take payment from my mother in law over the phone. They wanted someone to drive down and pay them cash then told me it would be a few days. We had to run infrared heaters that we borrowed, all over the house to get by. Then when we got heat assistance, they gave me a hard time about tank inspection. Heat assistance paid for the inspection and we got up and running. Our bankruptcy was dismissed because we were struggling with my illness. I was willing to quirk with them to pay them off. It was on a schedule they didn't like but was reasonable with anyone looking to collect. I owed them just under $400 and paid $200 like I promised them. Then the day before I was going to pay the remainder, my wife came home and could smell propane in the driveway. We didn't have much in the tanks but they let all the propane out of the tanks and disconnected our tanks. I was going to apply for fuel assistance again and I told Tom that but he knew they wouldn't cover inspection and re-connection fees. He didn't even care I have a 1 and 7 year old daughter in the house and was without heat for a month last time. Now im being forced from my house to stay with family for the winter while they're threatening to sue me for just under $200. Good luck dealing with this company. They can get away with it because there's no laws to protect consumers when it comes to propane. They could kill someone by leaving them in the cold without heat and I hope that doesn't happen. read more

Rural fuels is the worst company I have ever enoucntered. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. My aunt passed away this past week and this horrible company shut my cousins gas off and took away the tank! MIGHT I ADD SHE IS ONLY 19. AND HAD TO PAY FUNERAL EXPENSES. when we called and explained the situation, they didn't care what so ever, the only thing they wanted was money! what kind of human being doesn't even say sorry when someone passes away!? We offered to pay the balance that was due, and the woman on the phone just simply said no there was nothing they could do. Worst company ever. The minute they step foot on your property they charge you for doing nothing. They will do work that you never authorized and bill you for it. Beware!!! When it comes to gas they know what is right. I trust the work their tech Dennis did, his level of proficiency and knowledge was excellent. A service/install company is nothing without experienced workers. Although, definitely a company that wants to get every penny they can out of you, the same as any company that has a large overhead. However, I believe they will stand by their workmanship 100 percent. Keep track of the parts and labor hours if you can and check your bill before payment. They will work with you... I wouldn't want just anybody working on my gas system so I chose the ones with experience over price. read more

This company will call you back to take a payment for delivery but not deliver for 4 days after. Then try to charge you for some bogus inspection if you are low. They service manager is very nice and knowledgeable but the office staff not so much. I have been with them for many years and things have gone down hill. Quite honestly I am not happy with this company. I am a single mom of three, A 10-year-old, an eight-year-old, and a five-month-old baby . I work two jobs. Last year we ran out of propane, had to pay extra to have the gas turned back on. I called yesterday, in the past when you call one day it's here the next, I told them yesterday that we were very low less than 10 gallons. Now I understand they need 48 hour notice, and that they are behind because of the storms, however when somebody calls and they have not run out but they are low somehow I feel that that should be bumped to a priority delivery for at least the next day. I was told today that the people who are on automatic delivery get delivered to first. Well that is fine but I can't afford to be on automatic delivery because they require such a large deposit. Now mind you they have taken the money and put it on hold out of my accounts as of yesterday. When I called today to see how come there had been no delivery it's because we are not on their schedule for today, but you can certainly take the money ahead of time and certainly not delivered the next day? Knowing how low we are and knowing that there are small children in the home, this is somehow not a priority? And of course we are even lower today than we were yesterday. But somehow I have a feeling if we were to run out they would have no problem charging us all that extra money. I am not impressed and if I could switch I would but it is not my decision because I rent. read more

Unprofessional and irresponsible. They fell behind on their delivery schedule due to bad weather and didn't bother to notify us. Eventually, we ran out of gas in the middle of an ice storm, at night.
