On a late Wednesday morning, a group of friends and I got breakfast at Russ & Daughters. Having been to the location on Houston St., we already knew what to expect. We entered, took our ticket numbers (like the ones you see at the grocery stores), and waited for our turn. Luckily, not too many others also waited to order, so my number got called in a few minutes. I ordered the Super Heebster bagel sandwich with whitefish & baked salmon salad, horseradish-dill cream cheese, & wasabi flying fish roe ($19) and a cold brew coffee ($5) at the counter. Staff asked me to wait a few minutes. After preparing everything, they called me to the cash register, where I paid and received everything. I managed to snag the 5 person table w/combination booth and chair seating that freed up as I walked away from the cash register. Otherwise, all tables looked occupied; however, turnover seemed quick for most getting quick meals. The bagel sandwich proved excellent. The whitefish & baked salmon salad tasted creamier and richer than whitefish alone without becoming too oily or rich. I added onions, tomato, and caper (+$0.50 ea, +$1.50 total); these cut the richness substantially and balanced the palate. The wasabi roe provided some sharper texture and flavor contrasts. As for the bagel itself, I chose the everything bagel. The outer texture and inner fluffiness seemed on par with other highly rated establishments, such as Liberty Bagels. Crucially, it did not seem too dense. The cold brew coffee tasted on par with those at decent 3rd wave coffee shops - not too over extracted, dusty, over diluted, or acidic (good thing the previous decade's trend of light roast cold brew coffee died out). read more

This was a disappointing experience. Years ago I went to the original Russ and Daughters, which was completely mad. The lines were insane and the wait was an hour for a bagel. But it was totally worth it. Those were the days. Now there are locations everywhere. I got a classic gaspe nova (sesame) bagel with (scallion) schmear. The bagel was the saddest bagel I have ever eaten. I am from NYC, I know my bagels. This bagel was hard. They used to put a quarter pound of salmon in the bagels. Lucky coincidence that this location was a 14 min walk from our stay so went right over a few minutes before opening. I've been dying to try Russ & Daughters for some time and today was the day. We were in town on holiday for the week and we walked from our place in Chelsea. After a brief wait we ordered: Matzo ball soup and a sesame bagel for my wife and an onion bagel with scallion cream cheese, lox, tomato, capers and onion for me. We got a table and got to it. Firstly, the Matzo ball soup was SCREAMING hot just like it should be. Some places are afraid to serve their soups at a decent temperature but not R&D. Yes! Sesame bagel was good. When you walk in, it's a bit intimidating. There's a long line. Lots of variety to choose from. Limited seating. But... One of the best salmon lox bagels I've had! They give you lots of salmon lox, cream cheese, tomatoes, onions, and capers. The tomatoes, onions, and capers are add ons. They are pretty quick. When you arrive you pull a number from the number distributor (similar set up to ordering meat at a market). They call you by your number and you tell them what you want. The workers there moved through the line quickly, so I received my bagel about 5-7 minutes after ordering. I ordered the salmon roe with lox and cream cheese bagel. I got mine toasted. The bagel was pretty decent! The salmon roe definitely gave the bagel a more creamy flavor. The salmon roe wasn't too salty either so it blended well with the lox and cream cheese.
