Russ & Daughters will always be a favorite of mine. It's a place worth venturing around with all the different variety that they have to offer. If you are not someone who's really into lox, you can skip, but if you are into lox...worth going and trying all that they have to offer. Yes it's 1000% on the pricier end, and no it's not a grab and go kind of bagel...but oh is it a nice treat here and there. I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the locations of Russ & Daughters...I definitely prefer the original location but this and the other cafe by the original are nice simply for the fact that the insides are built out so well and are incredibly cozy and "New York." With this being a bagel you'd like to sit down and enjoy, this location and the other cafe location are great for exactly that. *side-note, this isn't a place to be intimidated by. I've been dying to try Russ & Daughters for some time and today was the day. We were in town on holiday for the week and we walked from our place in Chelsea. After a brief wait we ordered: Matzo ball soup and a sesame bagel for my wife and an onion bagel with scallion cream cheese, lox, tomato, capers and onion for me. We got a table and got to it. Firstly, the Matzo ball soup was SCREAMING hot just like it should be. Some places are afraid to serve their soups at a decent temperature but not R&D. Yes! Sesame bagel was good. My bagel with everything was kinda perfect. Chewy, crunchy, creamy, salty and briny with capers. The cold brew was also quite good and my wife's coffee was fine. Service was friendly and prompt. When you walk in, it's a bit intimidating. There's a long line. Lots of variety to choose from. Limited seating. But... One of the best salmon lox bagels I've had! They give you lots of salmon lox, cream cheese, tomatoes, onions, and capers. The tomatoes, onions, and capers are add ons. They are pretty quick. Nice, clean, well lighted space. It's part restaurant. Part take out store. They have a few different types of smoked salmon (lox) and a variety of bagels, and selection of cream cheese too. Love and missed good bagels in Portland. There's so many places in NYC that it's hard to focus but this one is definitely on my wishlist. Luckily we were able to check out this branch and it did not disappoint. I got the Super Heebster, whitefish and baked salmon salad with horse radish dill cram cheese and wasabi flying fish roe in an everything bagel. My goodness was the bagel food, chewy and crispy. The filling was a little too sweet. I tried a bite of the classic bagel and lox sandwich and that's what i would get next time. I also tried their matzo ball soup and it was so good! Pretty decent bagel and schmear, but the bagel I got today was significantly harder than what I am used to from the past. It tasted stale and difficult to chew. What actually really helped was taking it home and warming the other half in the microwave to soften it up. Service depends on which worker you get. You might get a friendly face, or just a blah no smiles worker that makes you feel uncomfy. Either way, it's a pretty straightforward bagel most of the time. However, I didn't think the flavors and textures quite delivered or matched my intrigue. My first mistake was not asking for the bagel to be toasted, so it tasted a bit one dimensional and dense throughout. When you arrive you pull a number from the number distributor (similar set up to ordering meat at a market). They call you by your number and you tell them what you want. The workers there moved through the line quickly, so I received my bagel about 5-7 minutes after ordering. I ordered the salmon roe with lox and cream cheese bagel. I got mine toasted. The bagel was pretty decent! The salmon roe definitely gave the bagel a more creamy flavor. The salmon roe wasn't too salty either so it blended well with the lox and cream cheese.
