Sometimes when traveling, you turn off the main road and suddenly find yourself in Murrells Inlet. That's exactly how we stumbled upon an unassuming little restaurant called Russell's Seafood Grill. It has a bit of a classic Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives feel, both inside and out, but some pretty good cooking is coming out of that kitchen. First off, the best hush puppies I've ever had--and even better, they were complimentary! Our group of six tried the fried flounder, fried shrimp, blackened shrimp, and fish and chips. I'll start by saying that we were a party of 12 and most of our group enjoyed their meal. The people that enjoyed their meal had fried seafood, most had fish and chips or fried shrimp. Those that had Shrimp and Grits commented that the grits were fantastic but the shrimp (that were ordered grilled) had cajun seasoning on them like blacked shrimp - which was not what they were expecting. I had the She Crab Soup followed by a nightly special, Red Drum stuffed with a crab cake. The soup was OK but I didn't actually find any crab in it and it was kinda bland. The Drum was just awful - I should have sent it back but being in a large group I didn't want to hold everyone up. The stuffed Drum was the most expensive thing on the menu. It was tough, dry and WAY overcooked. The top of the Crab cake stuffing was burnt black. I suspect the dish had been cooked a day or two ago and simply reheated. Our waitress was wonderful, fast, efficient and got everyone's order right. She even put the TV on the Atlanta Braves game for us. This was our first time eating at Russell's. Our waitress was very kind and informative about the menu items. She suggested their special which was the wahoo so my husband ordered it blackened with the roasted corn and peppers and onions and fried mashed potato cheese balls. I ordered the Creek shrimp basket with shoestring fries and coleslaw. The shrimp was very tasty and it reminded me of the seafood hut in calabash. You actually tasted shrimp and not just breading. We were able to sit outside and enjoy a pleasant evening with a view of the Inlet across the street. I appreciated that the restaurant had the battery operated devices that keep the flies off your food at each table. I also had a treehouse punch drink, which was amazing and it hit the spot. I sampled my husband's wahoo, and it might be the best fish I've ever had. He agreed. He did not even need his tartar or cocktail sauce to doctor it up. The kids absolutely loved them. I also tried my sister-in-law's crab legs and it was solid and tasted good with butter. I ordered the fish & chips as it is a popular item on the menu, but thought it was just average. I also tried my husband's hamburger steak and great nephew's deviled crab, both of which were just ok. My mother-in-law initially ordered the shrimp and grits, but had to send it back because it was too salty. She replaced it with the hamburger steak and said they overcooked it. She is a picky eater though. She also got a cup of she crab soup and fortunately said it was good, but had a lot of potatoes in it. My brother-in-law got the soup as well, but said it was bland. We had a party of 15 and although I thought the service was slow, others in my party said it wasn't given the size. Food is good! I had an oyster po'boy with those cheese potato balls. Only got 2 & wish I had just ordered a whole side, they we really good..fresh made not frozen. Slaw & hush puppies were a little sweet for my taste but not inedible. Hubs had the red drum special stuffed with crab & had a tasty sauce (maybe lobster?). That was good also. I can't remember our server's name, short blond hair & usually works evenings but was on our lunch shift. She was fabulous. We've driven by Russell's Seafood Grill a bunch of times, and always said we'd get over there and try it out, even though my mom wasnt crazy about the long ramp or the stairs, but today we got up in the restaurant, that's half tree house and has an outside deck, and inside dining, plenty of parking, MarshWalk is literally across the street, we had a great server, who was good at her craft so we tipped her well, even though the food was barely edible. We tried the conch fritters, which may have been sysco, who knows, but definitely a far cry from a legit conch fritters. We also tried the Fish n chips, and just like the conch fritters, the first thing that struck me was how dark they were, which is a clear sign of old cooking oil in the deep fryer, I only say this because I cooked professionally offshore in the Gulf for ages, and they would have flown me off any of those rigs or supply vessels if i tried to serve them food like i tried, but pushed away. The server was kind enough to remove the cost of the fritters, but i'll never have to eat at Russell's again. I give 3 stars because of the server and the restrooms were clean. 3/5 read more

Went to Russel's after having a great meal there a few months back. Once seated, we patiently waited on someone to take our drink orders. After watching a few waitresses help other tables but not ours, we asked the hostess to check to see who was our waitress. She was seating someone, and their order was quickly taken just after they were seated. After several more minutes we were not even able to get someone's attention and we got up to leave. Two staff members including the hostess watched us leave without checking or offering to help. So far so good!! Found this place on Yelp and decided the diversity of their menu made it a good place to bring my family of 5. First we started with the complimentary hush puppies and sweet butter which were straight out of the fryer hot and crispy. We followed that with calamari and conch fritters for an appetizer. My wife and I liked both apps. The kids were not fans of the conch fritters so my wife and I took care of those. For dinner my 14yo and I are splitting the "The Whole Sea", my wife got shrimp basket w/ fries. Everyone enjoyed their food and were stuffed and we still had leftovers. The only complaint was the AC Unit blowing cold air on my wife and girls. After a hot day at the beach getting baked we were all susceptible to the cold air. Russell's is a relaxing and casual seafood restaurant with really good service and good food. They have seating inside and outside on the porch. If it's cold, they have a couple of space heaters they can turn on. Their happy hour specials are good: - We had a dozen oysters, and they were really good (8/10). - The hush puppies were really good, especially with the honey butter (8/10) - The calamari was just ok (4/10 overall). It was a little chewy with not much flavor. If it were more crispy, that would have helped. The three sauces were a little different too - not the cocktail sauce we are used to. For dinner we ordered: - The Peel and Eat Shrimp were good (7/10). They were cooked well and tasted fresh. - The Blackened Shrimp Gumbo looked really good, and the flavor was good, but it wasn't really gumbo. It was more of Spicy Shrimp Creole dish instead of gumbo. If it had been listed as creole and served over 2-3 cups of rice, it would have been really good. As a gumbo, it would be a 4/10 for me - too intense, and that's saying a lot for me because I like flavor and spice. As a shrimp creole, I would have given it an 8/10. Overall, I think Russell's is pretty good, but it could be really good with a few tweaks. read more

Yes yes yes! Finally found a delicious seafood spot where the locals go that doesn't break the bank or is swarming with tourists. This place rocks! The food is delicious, huge portions, competitive prices, awesome service, and a relaxed atmosphere. Our bartender, Cindy, was wonderful! Parking was fine for us but it probably packs out here. I also loved that it was a little out of the way as far as the hustle and bustle of MarshWalk traffic, it's about a mile past all that down the road. My parents and I came for happy hour on Wednesday evening. Happy Hour is 4-6. There's a limited number of options but still good deals, such as 1/2 price wine by the glass, $5 margaritas, $4 house liquor, $4 drafts. There's also Bang Bang Shrimp for $9, $1 raw oysters, calamari for $10, fried pickles for $6 and a few other things. My dad got the Bang Bang Shrimp and he loved it. The portion size was pretty decent for the price. My mom got the Creek Shrimp basket which was perfect! So much shrimp plus 2 sides for $16.99. The creek shrimp is smaller and sweeter than larger shrimp, which some may not like but we love it. The baked potato and slaw were fine, nothing to write home about but they were good enough. The tartar was pretty tasty, and the cocktail sauce was delightful! It has a nice spice to it. Mom also enjoyed her margarita. I ordered Grilled Oysters which aren't part of the happy hour specials but for a dozen they were $22.99 (market price right now, subject to change). I thought that was fair and they were large. So tasty! Just what I wanted. I also tried the Watermelon Crush, eh it was okay. The mix is a little sweet. Try the La Crema wine on their menu, it was great, and about $5 during happy hour. I almost forgot to mention the complimentary hush puppies! Oh man these are AMAZING! I'm not even a big hush puppy fan and could eat these every day. The breading is perfect and crispy, with amazing flavor. Can't wait to come back here. It's definitely part of our restaurant rotation now!
