Good tea, very slow/absent service, SO hot inside. The good: the tea tasted good, the food (as part of regular tea service) was good, and the decor/ambiance inside was nice. The house tea is very tasty and so is the apricot green. The bad: our waiter never came back so we didn't order as much as we could have. We probably would have ordered another tower but after he took our order the first time, he never came back. We ended up just hanging out for an hour and a half and got too sweaty and decided to leave. The inside was so hot. There was no AC and it was humid inside so we ended up drenched in sweat. It was literally nicer outside because the temperature was slightly cooler and there was also some wind. Overall, it wasn't an awful experience but it definitely was not as fun as we expected it to be because of the slow service and heat inside. I couldn't find this place initially because Google Maps and Yelp photos showed the restaurant with a red awning. This has since been removed as of Aug 2021. My friend and I have been looking for places in Chicago that offered afternoon tea, which led us to stumble upon Russian Tea Time. For tea we had the apricot green tea. We wanted to try the Sen Cha green tea, but they were out that day. The apricot green tea was delicious and pretty sweet on its own. We didn't need to add any additional brown sugar to the tea. They had a full Tea Service that came with assortment of sweets, and sandwiches, but we weren't craving sweets at the time. Will need to come back and try them! OMG I loved this meal. I was visiting Chicago with family and friends this past weekend. Part of our group went up to Wrigley to take in a Cubs game, but a family friend and I decided to take in some touristy spots instead. After checking out Cloud Gate ("the Bean"), we walked over to Russian Tea Time for lunch (the restaurant is directly across from the Art Institute as well). I love Eastern European and Russian food, because I grew up eating Ashkenazi Jewish food which is often quite similar and currently live in a city that doesn't really have any restaurants serving those cuisines. So when I saw the menu at Russian Tea Time, I knew I wanted to go. We started with some lunch time vodka flights (we were on vacation after all). My friend got the Russian Tea flight, and I got the Nemiroff Flight. This was the right way to start a great, very long meal! The vodkas were all interesting (some infused with various flavors) and we almost ordered more (the shots are not large!). For our lunch, we started by ordering a small appetizer off their "Secret Menu," which seemed like a happy hour menu (with specials and discounts). We got the fried beef pelmeshki (8 pieces), which were small fried dumplings filled with very flavorful beef. Then we got the "Herring Under the Blanket" (which I've also seen called "herring in a fur coat") - a layered salad of potato, pickled herring, beets, carrots, mayo, and hard-boiled eggs. This is a traditional dish that you can find at other Russian restaurants, and I love it generally and I loved it here. You definitely have to love all the component parts, though - and not everyone is a fan of cold salads, pickled herring, beets, or mayo! But I loved it. We also got the blinchiki combination, which is two blinchiki (sort of a crispy, fried blintz - crepe) served with a small salad. One was cabbage, and the other was beef and caramelized onions. Each had a different sauce drizzled over. Both were good, and we coudln't decide which we liked best. Then, golubtsi (stuffed cabbage). We did one roll, because we might have ordered a little too much food (is that possible?), but you can get one or two. I don't always love stuffed cabbage, because I'm constantly comparing it to my family's recipe! But I loved the golubtsi at Russian Tea Time! The sauce was a little sweet (how I like it), and the filling was wonderful. It came with a side carrot salad and kasha, which were great as well. Since we'd love everything, we decided we couldn't pass up honey cake and tea for dessert. The tea was wonderful, and the honey cake was quite good! We enjoyed our experience at Russian Tea Time so much that I think we were there for 2+ hours. Tables came and went, and we just stayed. (I will say that the food didn't come out very fast even though the restaurant wasn't very full.) We had made a reservation on Yelp, but for lunch on a Friday, we didn't really need one. When we got there around 12:45 on Friday, there weren't too many tables (it did get more crowded around 1:30/2 for tea time). Had a wonderful tea here this past week. What a great price at $35 a person for the standard tea service! The interior is charming with lovely music and wonderful support staff. We had tea at nearly 730 pm but the staff was excellent. They have many different tea options, I loved my blood orange decaf tea. The sandwiches aren't exactly sandwiches... it's more like different toppings on toasted bread and a variety of desserts--delicious nonetheless! I especially enjoyed the carrot and coconut cakes. What a gorgeous interior for a Russian tea time! The rich colors of the walls and the multitude of sconces and chandeliers just made this place downright elegant!! There were only 2 servers for the whole restaurant but never felt forgotten or neglected. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. We had the RUSSIAN TEATIME FOR TWO. So we got to taste a large sampling of appetizers and entrees. The standouts are the BEEF STROGANOFF and CARROT SALAD. The beef stroganoff was so unctuous and creamy. I would make sure to order a side of buttered noodles with them. The carrot salad is so delicately shredded and spiced. It is a must try. Luckily, the Art Institute's cafe was closed, and I needed to find something close by, so I took myself on a solo dolo date here with my audiobook--core memory unlocked! I had the Lychee Rose Green Tea, the perfect medicine for a freezing, windy day. A super quaint spot for authentic Russian food. Pretty easy to make a reservation but was also relatively empty on the weekend so I think walk-ins are also fine. A little pricy, but it's definitely a unique experience if you've never had Russian food before. Portions are also pretty big. Bread and butter ($5) - didn't really have the pumpernickel or onion flavor as I expected but the butter was really good. Dumpling combination ($18) - this has 6 potatoes and 6 beef dumplings. I preferred the beef dumplings and the carrots in the middle were the perfect match. Seafood platter for two ($72) - this was actually so much food that we had to take some of it home. The potatoes are nice and buttery. The fish platter had a good diversity and I particularly liked the fish in the middle (not sure which one it was). The pieces of actual fish had a lot of bones in it, which was a little harder to eat. Also wasn't really sure how to assemble the crepes but they were a nice vessel for the fish! Really lovely place for tea right across from the Art Institute. My best friend and I love to grab afternoon tea when we travel together so when she comes to visit me I bring her to only the best. Firstly, the interior is so grand and luxurious. The red velvet curtains on the walls and gold bar made me feel like I was on a fancy train car in the 1920s. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I booked my reservation through Yelp and gave them a call to see what time the High Tea was until. They told me High Tea was available until 7pm because of Covid. Our reservation was for 3pm. Once arrived, they were pretty busy and there were many guests enjoying food and a few others with tea service. They also serve Prix Fixe lunch and dinners and you can order a la carte too. We have enjoyed High Tea service at The Peninsula, Drake Hotel, and Soho Allis. My guest said the food featured with the tea was one of her favorites in the city. The scones were delicious, and the other small bites complemented the tea well. We had to choose a selection of tea and we went with the house blend. I've waited so long to try Russian Tea Time. Once I did, it was worth the wait. To give some backstory, I've seen Russian Tea Time in my adventures in Chicago's Loop when I first moved to Chicago. Yet, when I finally had some time to try it it was closed for reconstruction for almost a full YEAR. After the reconstruction was done, the pandemic happened and it was closed for a few more months. Then, after about a year-and-a-half of waiting, I was able to check this place out. And it did not disappoint. Russian Tea Time gives us a glimpse into Russian high tea culture. There is a regular menu and a full-service tea menu. The tea menu offers a variety of options to choose from and wait staff will help answer any questions that one may have. The tea service itself is exemplary. The platters will start off with light beginnings, filling savories, and satisfying dessert pieces. Though each piece is small, it will leave you satiated in the end. I got the regular tea service and I was left more than satisfied. Prices here are around $$-$$$. I went to Russian tea time for the first time on 12/6/2022. My first impression of the place was that it was well-decorated. The colors that the restaurant uses gives the atmosphere sort of an old elegant feel. The tea cups and shot glasses used at this restaurant are also engraved. I must say that the pickles at Russian tea time were some of the best pickles I've ever had. They were juicy and had a thick feel to them which I enjoyed. I had the pleasure of ordering the Prix Fixe lunch and dinner option on the menu. I ate the vareniki potato dumplings for my first course. They were delicious. The texture and the taste won me over. For my main course, I had the blinchiki combination and would order again in a heartbeat. I was so happy with every dish I ate at Russian tea time. I also drank their tea and immediately loved it! The decoration of the tea cups added to my drinking experience. I loved the quality of the tea and would recommend ordering for yourself and your friends. I do have to say that their dessert options are my favorite thing about this restaurant. I ordered the medovik (honey cake) and Napoleon Bonaparte. would likely rate a 3.5 if i could do half stars. cute intimate spot for afternoon (or late morning) tea. very nice service. the main issue is the "beginnings, savories, and sweets" were not very good (and usually my favourite part of tea time!). to be quite honest, the bottom plates with the petit fours, pastries, and profiteroles felt like they came straight from the Jewel-Osco bakery section (which is to say, not great). most of the sandwiches were decent, and the scones + jam and cream were very good. maybe next time we'll try the "Queen's" version as it looked a bit more interesting when we glanced it on a table on the way out. overall the tea was pretty good and for the price of the brunch teatime menu, we were not too disappointed. read more

This classic, elegant restaurant in the Loop features a nice selection of traditional Russian/Ukrainian/central Asian dishes. The location is right on Adams/Michigan, making it perfect for a dinner before attending the Chicago Symphony next door or a casual lunch. I've tried the golubtsi (cabbage roll simmered in tomato sauce) and grilled salmon and both dishes were flavorful and well-cooked. But for me, the standout dish was the dessert I ordered - the éclairs. They are essentially cream puffs filled with a light and not overly decadent/sweet custard, paired with a refreshing berry drizzle. They were so delicious! I have yet to try the afternoon tea selections, so that will be the next thing I order at my next visit. My friend and I were really excited to go here, but the experience left a horrible taste in our mouths. We showed up dressed pretty casual which I think contributed to the way we were served. After a few minutes of looking at the menu, we ordered some appetizers and the waitress immediately tried to take our menus (as if we weren't going to order anything else..) We ordered soup, bread and a dumplings platter. The soup and bread came right away (there was no pumpernickel bread so they gave us plain white bread which tasted stale). I watched as 2 other couples were seated, waited on and served their orders in the span of the next 30 minutes. None of the waiters came back to our table besides to take our empty bowls/bread basket and even then, she didn't ask if we needed anything or give us an update on the dumplings platter. It took almost a full hour for her to come back, tell us it was almost ready, and bring it out a few minutes later. Ir honestly felt like during the hour of waiting, the waiters were purposely not looking in our direction: they would help the table next to us and not even glance in our direction. Very poor service and for that price ... I don't plan on revisiting. read more

What an incredibly disappointing experience. The first time I came to Russian tea time was twenty years ago, when I was sixteen years old and visited Chicago for a Model UN conference. It had seemed so glamorous to my young eyes. I've recently felt a smidge of nostalgia, and decided to come back this evening with a friend to see what it was like as an adult. I expected it to be priced for the location and geared toward tourists, but I was fine with that. The service in general was sub par and inattentive, and it took a long time to get the attention of our server so we could place our order. The lamb shank we ordered came with a side of mashed potatoes, which was mostly instant potatoes with a few pieces of actual potato in it, and was awful. I can't imagine Russian restaurant of all places not using real potatoes for their mashed potatoes as part of a $30 dish, but that is the case. Potatoes are so easy, too. But the part of our experience that really sticks out is with the bread. We ordered the pumpernickel bread with a side of butter. The server brought out a basket that was half full and only had white bread in it. We told him we ordered pumpernickel bread, and he informed us that they were all out of pumpernickel bread but that they would not be charging us for this white bread. He didn't volunteer this on his own; he only said this when we pointed out that the bread wasn't what we ordered. Okay, bad enough, but forgivable. We each served a piece, and it was dried out, stale, mealy, and utterly inedible. But then we took a closer look at the basket. The cloth that the bread was served in had a fresh oil stain. And, for some reason, the basket was filled with the *crumbs* of pumpernickel bread. When the waiter returned, we pointed out that our basket was filled with pumpernickel bread crumbs. His response: "Oh there was some pumpernickel bread in there but then I decided that the pieces were too small, so I took them out." What??? What a bizarre coverup. It was quite clear that they had given us the leftover bread basket from another table. They didn't even bother changing out the napkin. The experience left us utterly grossed out. After we left we wondered if everyone else had experiences like this, and discovered another Yelp review from three days ago that had the *exact* same experience. Coincidence or not, that Yelper is a person of color and so am I. Coincidence or not, this experience was within three days of each other. Yuck, Russian Tea Time. Serving a customer the leftover food of another customer is gross, irresponsible and a serious health code violation. But more importantly, it just really makes it clear that you don't take pride and love in the food you serve. A Chicago institution ruined today. read more

We were in Chicago for the symphony on a rainy Thursday evening and didn't have reservations anywhere. We had been in the car for almost two hours in traffic from Northbrook and I was grumpy and hungry. My husband decided we should check out the Russian Tea house since we walked by it some many times. So we popped in without reservations just shy of two hours before the concert. The host didn't make us feel terrible about not having reservations and kindly showed us the few tables that they had open. They were all tables for two tucked into spots that most people wouldn't want to sit, but we picked a nice little table just in front of the coat room in proximity to the bar and kitchen while not being too close to them and we loved the spot....I thought we had more room an intimacy than the tables in the the two dining room seated elbow to elbow by each other. The space is a bit tight, so we felt we had lots of room and loved it. Our waitress was so friendly, attentive, and helpful. She did disappear for a bit towards the end of our dinner when she was getting our desert together and I panicked a bit because we needed to get out the door for the concert, but I think it was because everyone was leaving at the same time and it all ended up working out. If I had one complaint it would be that I paid $12 for a glass of wine and the pour was on a bit of the stingy side. I don't mind paying more for a glass of wine if they are generous with the pour, but I was disappointed by the serving I received. The wine was wonderful though. My husband got a vodka flight and loved it. Since it was raining and a bit chilly I ordered a cup of their mushroom barley soup right away. I'm used to a beef or cream based soup, so I was a bit surprised when the generous serving I received was tomato based. It was outstanding and I think the soup could be a meal of it's own. Their cut of soup is actually a fairly large serving and the bowl serving is much larger. For dinner I ordered the beef stroganoff and I'm sad to say that I will never be able to make my versions of this at home again after having it at Russian Tea Time. The meat melted in my mouth and the flavor was amazing. I cleaned my plate. It was served with some sort of shredded carrot side and a side of beets...both side dishes had over the top flavor. My husband had some sort of stew and said it was wonderful. We cleaned out plates and didn't feel guilty about it. read more
