Family Italian Mainstay by French Valley Airport We live in Spencer's Crossing, so the closest decent sit down restaurants with quality food tend to be more than 10 minutes. Just so happens that this place is only 10 minutes down Winchester, and they never disappoint. Got takeout on a Wednesday school night, and here's what we ordered: Gnocchi Matriacale. Likely the best gnocchi I've eaten in a long time if not the best. Comes with a creamy red sauce with bits of pancetta, which kinda like Italian bacon in flavor. Just the right amount of chewiness and flavor in the gnocchi. And that sauce is just amazing with the perfect saltiness and savory mix. A fantastic choice, and our new goto pasta dish. Stays well in the takeout tin. Huge recommend. Spaghetti with Meat Sauce. Not a true ragu I'm used to at fancier Italian joints, this sauce is wetter with lots of juicy meaty tomato flavor. And that's not a bad thing necessarily. I mean, the not too sweet tomatoey flavor that's just the touch right amount of sour is actually quite good -- surprisingly good, even having been sitting in the tin, despite obvious sauce breaking with the travel home (just mix it up again or sop it up with the free bread). I was torn between this and the gnocchi, as it's on its own right. But to be fair, I also put my own generous amount of cheese on here with a combo of store bought powder parmesan and a more gourmet freshly grated helping of parmigiano reggiano. So I definitely recommend this -- but you really do make this dish with cheese, so be sure to get plenty with it if you don't have your own. It's just not even the same without it. Otherwise, sauce is still pretty good but lacks the requisite punch that only cheese can add. Recommend. Bread. Each pasta dish comes with a generous piece of bread complete with a small cup of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Delish by itself (bread is not totally tasteless but oily good with a slight chewy-crunchy texture) or with any leftover sauce from the pasta. Chicken Caesar salad. My wife's goto dish. Chicken is always grilled just right with good flavor, never tough. And the dressing is excellent -- even for takeout. Doesn't come with extra cheese, though it's not required. Wife likes extra sauce. Recommend. Spumone. You can actually order this to go in 16-ounce styrofoam cup to keep it nice and cold! Overall a great local family run restaurant with fantastic Italian flavors. We usually order a pizza (recommend since the pies a great here) here, but we decided to try some other stuff. This is not good Italian. I wanted it to be soooo bad! But it just isn't. I've tried at least 5 different dishes each time I went back, because it's just down the road from me. The food lacks flavor!!! It's all just so bland that it's really just upsetting. Their pizza is fine but the rest of it is not worth your hard earned money. Im Sicilian and grew up in New England where there's Italian on every corner. There, it's like Mexican out here. You can't go wrong. So trust me when I say I love Italian without being too picky. When we first moved to this area, we actually enjoyed this restaurant. Then the service became weak. So we stopped going to the restaurant and just ordered food for pick up. The last two times there was a problem with the order. Most recently, I did not like the woman behind the counter yesterday (Jan 16th) at 6pm. She told me over the phone to come and pick up my order in 20 minutes and then I ended up having to wait an additional 30 minutes without an apology (although she offered me water). She seemed nice but it appears to be only with certain regulars. She explained to a person after me why they were so backed up. But never explain to me and just expected me to wait. It's strange, but their menu states they have happy hour every day from 3-5. However, when I asked the hostess/server, she said "no we don't ". No explanation given either. We ordered wine and a pizza. Waitress brought out their bread which was stale and cold. My husband said it tasted like pound cake minus the sweetness. The wine was excellent (Robert Renzoni) The pepperoni pizza was just okay. It was actually quite bland which was disappointing. I would like to say that this place is good, BUT...I never had the chance to enjoy it. Tried to make a reservation for our group, and no one answered the phone. When we arrived, we were told 25 minutes before we could sit. BTW, place wasn't at full capacity. Some of our party were seated on the small couch and we were asked to wait outside in the cold. No apologies, just the request for us to leave. We ended up asking if they could turn on the heat lamps. While waiting outside for over 25 minutes, the same hostess let us know it'll be another 30 minutes+. We asked to split our party if it made it easier. We were informed they would not accommodate, it'll be the same amount of wait time. Really? Why tell someone 25 minutes when you're really meaning almost 1 hour. Be careful when dealing with the "manager" BRYNN. This place came highly recommended from our neighbors and it's disappointing it came to this. We ordered two pizzas and a Ceasar salad on 6/8. We ordered directly from their menu so we could see the prices. She took my credit card info over the phone. When my wife brought it home, we noticed that the prices were different. What should have been $47 was now $75. I immediately called the store and questioned them. Brynn tried to tell me that she asked me if I wanted a small or large pizza and I told her I wanted a large. (Granted the menu only has one price and says nothing about the sizes on it). She then proceeded to tell me, "I'm not going to sit here and argue with you about it. It's your word vs mine and I'm not issuing a refund." She then proceeded to tell me to have a good night and click. Wow. So my wife and I went back to look at the receipt again. I thought the service was amazing and the bread was very good. I know they also catered our school athletic meal and the food (not pictured was also pretty good that is why i came separately). My concern is that all of the chicken dishes we ordered, the chicken was all prepared the same way (not pictured chicken Alfredo). A traditional pan sear. I am not sure if that was intentional but i felt that if there were different options for the dishes it would have given it some variation. Going with a "solid four" star rating for our first time dining experience. Early Saturday night, they were busy but not so full up that we had to wait, we were seated immediately. Our server was wonderful and bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar came soon after getting to our table. I ordered the spaghetti Bolognese and my wife had the lasagna. Bolognese was a tad on the salty side but quite tasty. It was quite different than the way my wife makes at home, but it was good. The real star of the show was the lasagna. There was a creamy sauce, and ricotta, meat sauce and good mozzarella cheese. One bite I had to try made me jealous! My entree was good but this was fancy lasagna! We decided before we were done with the meal that we would be returning. Soon. It would be nice to try a pizza next time, but who knows, I might be tempted by pesto or some seafood. Our first visit has set our expectations high. I will say that unlike other reviews we did have attentive service, so no complaints there. We were not super thrilled with the spumoni because we don't go for whipped cream and Maraschino cherries. Not a review I am proud to share but feel necessary in hopes to express the disappointment and honest feedback for the opportunity to make it better. Rustico has been our go to for local Italian food with the friendly ambiance. Our family dined last night, Saturday May 31st 2025 and our server was extremely friendly and attentive - his service 5 stars. Name not mentioned to protect privacy. We enjoyed our dishes and decided to order dessert to go since we were too full. We ordered 2 tiramisus for midnight snack! We got home and after a few hours we were ready to enjoy it. We first opened one in case we couldn't finish it all. Luckily we only opened one as we put some in our mouth we looked at each other thought the same and spit it out. The tiramisu was tasteless didn't taste at all like tiramisu. I thought maybe it's just me but my husband and other guest also had the same thoughts. We have ordered tiramisu before and definitely did not taste like it did last night. I immediately called to speak with the manager on duty and was told the owner was not in. I asked if they have recently changed their tiramisu recipe and the MOD said yes they have changed the recipe recently. I left my name and phone number waited all day today Sunday June 1, 2025 no return call. I didn't want to wait any longer so I drove back to share and return to the restaurant. Even more so disappointing that the MOD tonight was more focused on getting the point across that "no one has ever complained before" - her exact words. Perhaps a sincerely apology or sincere act of customer satisfaction would have behoove the situation better. Rather than justifying and not open to true customer feedback. It benefits me in no way shape or form to drive back and forth over tiramisu that I can easily make at home that I know would taste like tiramisu. Perhaps not chef or authentic Italian tiramisu but that's why I rely on Rustico to get that chef inspired authentic tiramisu which we did not get this time.
