I know my experience was atypical, but no one should ever have this happen to them anywhere, and my hope is ownership takes this seriously. Regulars have no right to make other paying customers uncomfortable and unsafe, and that's exactly what happened to me earlier this week. A regular at the bar started a conversation with me and when I pointed at a whiskey bottle on the shelf, another regular, who wasn't the bartender but was behind the bar for some reason, immediately got aggressive, posturing and eventually aggressively insisting I leave before "something else happens." So buyer beware here. Seems generally they are a good time for all, but apparently you may encounter an unsavory element here. I do want to say thank you the bartender who was polite and courteous, not to mention busting his butt to take care of all the guests quickly. So here's what went down... I had a lot of fun in the old town area last time I was in PHX, so naturally this was the call on this one. We scanned Yelp and found Rusty Spur, and our group of 10 headed over. The door guy was chill, there was a live musician playing guitar and taking requests, and a lively crowd dancing, drinking and having a good time. I went to the bar and ordered two beers and a nest pour of whiskey for myself and a few colleagues. Bartender hands me the bill and I notice a $2 charge for "AS rocks", so I ask what that's all about and the bartender explained that the owners require him to charge that and watch the security cameras to see if he does, and he's been told he'll be fired if he doesn't put this charge on the bill. He was nice about how he explained it, so I tipped him on top of this surcharge, and went back to my drink and friends. A few minutes later I was standing next to a regular in the back corner of the bar. He asked me about my conversation with the bartender and I explained it and pointed to the bottle of whiskey on the shelf. The conversation moved on to other small talk from there until this other guy with long dark hair decided to start making aggressive moves from behind the bar, pointing at me and asking the other guy what I was doing. I could hear so I explained, but the next thing I know he's telling me to get out, saying if I don't like it here I don't need to stay, and eventually moving closer to me saying go go get out. Idk who this dude was or if he had any authority in the situation but I'm not one for confrontation so I just left. His actions were out of line and cost the business and bartender a bunch of money. It was bad enough knowing customers are charged a BS surcharge when ordering premium spirits. This guy just pushed it over the edge. If the owner reads this, fix the problem. read more

This use to be my favorite go to bar. But over the past 3 years, this place started running like a sitcom with no script. I've seen better leadership in a toddler's play kitchen! It's officially a classic in decline. read more

A lot of history here, I would recommend you go in yourself and learn about what this place used to be and see what it is now, LOVE IT! Nicki was our waitress, she was amazing! Stopped in here with my wife, son and daughter for daughter's birthday celebration day. It's located on Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale. It was just before noon on a Sunday and so we had a quick beer. Very small seating area and a small bar at the far end. The bartender was nice and there were a few regulars at the bar. The walls are adorned with dollar bills that the various patrons have written their names on and small notes. Cool vibe, but claustrophobic to me. read more

What a cool little historic spot! First saloon in Scottsdale, definitely had that old southwest vibe going on. We got there at 11:00 when they opened and it was pretty packed. We were still able to get a spot at the bar. There was a band playing, which was cool to hear at that time of day. Lots of stuff around the walls to check out, including dollar bills posted all over the walls. They take the money and donate it to a children's hospital. I thought that was really awesome! The kitchen was super small, so just quick pub food like nachos and things like that. We didn't order any food, but the drinks were good. The biggest highlight were these cute chairs at the bar. This place was so fun! It's apparently one of the oldest bars in Scottsdale and super popular with the locals. I came here with some colleagues to end a night with a few drinks and there's country music playing here, I believe 7 days a week. The band was in full swing and the place was pretty popping for a Monday night. I don't drink alchy, so just enjoyed a soda water and lime and some great dancing. The crowd was friendly and fun, the bartenders nice and kind; and the music was good. What's not to love? Definitely don't miss this spot for a fun country vibe out. read more

I went to bar for the first time here at the Rusty Spur Saloon the other night and I loved this place. The ambiance was amazing, we got lucky and met a fun group of bachelors. Psychobilly performed and they were awesome! The only issue I experienced was with one of the female bartenders. When we first ordered drinks, the margaritas were tasty and strong. We tipped a good amount. On my second order, I gave the exact amount to the dollar and the bartender made a nasty face. On my third order, the bartender remembered me and put no effort into the drink. She put a third of the amount of alcohol as she did the first two times and didn't even care to shake the mix. I was even tempted to not pay the drinks but I didn't want to cause an unnecessary conflict. I admit I was wrong in not tipping the second time as I learned about the $2 per drink etiquette after the fact but her lack of good service put a damper on the night, especially since we tipped good the first time. I won't leave a bad review just after one bad bartender experience because other than this, the night was pretty fun. I would totally recommend going when Psychobilly is playing! One of the oldest (THE oldest?) bars in Scottsdale, going strong at 70+ years. A country music bar without many seats is not where I would normally spend a few hours on a Saturday evening but I had guests in town. The live music is the draw and some evenings see multiple performers. The singer we saw did a solid cover of a Garth Brooks song. There's nothing special about the drinks list or the prices. What I saw was that many of the customers seemed very giddy. They loved the small space (and it is a SMALL bar) and yet continued to dance and imbibe. Pro tip: order drinks while the singer/band is singing. If you wait for the intermission, the line gets really long. All in all, The Rusty Spur is a nice break from the glitzy side of Scottsdale. The crowd and bartenders are nice enough. This is a must-do (for a few minutes at least) to grab a drink and hear a song before continuing with your evening. A bucket list stop for country music lovers or those wanting a "cowboy" side of their visit. read more

Was kicked out of the bar by Mark (bartender) with the gentleman next to me sleeping at the bar. I had approximately 4 drinks weight 275lbs and am 62 years of age walking to my hotel and have never been kicked out of a bar in my life. Great hole in the wall bar/saloon/watering hole in the middle of Old Town Scottsdale. This place is very small but that is what makes it cool. The live band was great, the people there were having a great time and singing and dancing along with the band who was playing a mix of country and southern rock. Bartenders and bouncers were friendly, fun and attentive. Now we were I. There early, around 6pm so happy hour crowd was there and many tourists. But the vibe was great and drinks were reasonable! Went here for live music and a good time. This bar was established in 1951 as one of the first bars in Scottsdale. They have live country 7 days and 7 nights a week. People were having a great time, dancing. Live music sang happy birthday for our friend who's birthday we were celebrating- tipped of course. I'm assuming will do other songs with tip request pending on who's live that day/ evening. I cannot comment on the food as I only drank here. Bartenders were nice. Spent a Saturday afternoon with my husband at this dive bar. Great location as well as a great party vibe. They play live music daily. They have a full bar and a small bar menu. This a small bar filled with wall to wall interesting western decor. There are a few tables as well as some fun looking barstools. At night they remove all but four tables to make room for dancing. So if you want a table at night you need to arrive early. The restrooms were very clean. Their staff is on top of their game. They work their way between the tables to make sure everyone happy. They stay on top of clearing our beer cans and glasses. Don't come here if you have Covid concerns. No masks, no social distancing. It was so refreshing to be out at the bars again. We were playing tour guide to out of town visitors yesterday, November 15, 2020. We'd been to 1 bar (well done Bootleggers!) 1 restaurant (great job Grimaldi's) then moved on. Thought we would go to the Rusty Spur, a fun dive. I haven't been there for months. The place was packed. Not one spot at the bar and people crammed into tables. No one is wearing a mask, there's a one man band playing and the crowd noise was insane. Clearly, this bar does not give 2 shits about COVID or its spread. If you'd like to throw caution to the wind go. The total disregard for the safety of guest is reprehensible. Arizona is a hot bed for new COVID cases and the Rusty Spur is ground zero. read more

I've been to the Rusty Spur many times and always had a great experience but last night was pretty horrible. I waited in line for 15 minutes and when we got to the front, and the door guy was waiving people in, I went to walk through the door and he through up his arm and hit my chest to stop me...I hadn't had any drinks and was quite taken back by this unprofessional behavior. He proceeded to tell me my friend was too intoxicated to come in. He was fine but completely understand if a business doesn't want to serve an individual, I've put on large events when I owned a professional sports team so get it. But to assume I was intoxicated and to physically touch me like that, unacceptable and a bad look for the business. I walked away and the door guy proceeded to refer to me as my friends boyfriend, which I assume was meant to be slanderous and derogatory. For my love for dive bars, this one hits it out of the ball park. I highly recommend getting a cold one at this place since the service was awesome. The bartenders seemed like they've been in the service industry for awhile. The bar food was your normal bar food but definitely will hold you through as your walking around Main St. shopping and burning off calories. In the corner they have a small stage for live music so keep an eye out for that. Honestly, I went on a Monday in November and it was pretty full so if your ever in Scottsdale make sure to go in it's offseason cause I can't imagine how much clientele they get during the summer. Love it or hate, the Rusty Spur is a local institution. I, for one, love it, and I take all my out of town visitors here. If you know what you're getting yourself into, you're likely to love it also. It's TINY. I've often wondered if it's among the smallest bars in the state or even country. You'll have to wade through a crowd of people on weekend evenings, some dancing, to get to the bar, which has no draft beer. Really. Unless you're a regular, service won't be particularly friendly, but drinks are strong and cheap. The people watching and the live music is why you're here anyway. The Friday & Saturday night band, Psychobilly Rodeo Band, is unlike anything you've ever heard before. You'll be jamming out to "All Summer Long" or "American Pie," and suddenly you'll hear, "Tip the f%$king band!" or "Show us your t*tties!" It's truly a blast, and you'll witness people from 21 to 80 dancing and singing, locals, horrified foreign tourists, and bewildered businessmen alike. My husband and I, along with my bff and her boyfriend stopped in here for a quick drink while we walked around old Scottsdale. We got there and another couple were leaving as we walked in and they told us to take their table. The place is pretty small. There was a live singer/guitar player that was fun to listen too and watch. The employees came around periodically clearing off empty bottles and glasses. They were all very friendly and quick to help if you need something. The other patrons that were there, were also super friendly and everyone seemed to be having a great time.
