On Tuesday evening of Christmas week we didn't have any reservations to Century Grand or UnderTow but we wanted to see if there were any openings in the "other" bar in that building. I had seen it before but never paid much attention to it. Luckily for us, it was first come, first serve. That worked perfectly. What used to be called Grey Hen Rx is now M.E. Lee's. It is now Chinatown themed and I'm not sure what all changed with the menu, but we had a great time there. Our server was phenomenal. She was well versed in the cocktail menu and able to make great recommendations for our first drink there based on some descriptions of what we were looking to have. The cocktails were all made really well. Everything tasted very good and balanced. I would definitely come back here. On a whim, my friend and I came to Century Grand to see if we could get a last minute table at Undertow or Platform 18 on a Saturday night. Spoiler alert, they were all booked up. The staff encouraged us to check out the Grey Hen (now know as M.E. Lees) to see if we could grab a table there. This pop up was so cute, it's decorated to feel like you're in Chinatown in New York-and they absolutely nailed the atmosphere. We were able to get a menu as we waited for a table and got out drink as we waited for a table to pop up. First off, the menu is so cute! It's formatted in a newspaper and it was so whimsical and fun. We order the Slutty Tiki and Stars and Garters to sip on and were not disappointed. They make a mean cocktail and make sure the presentation is top tier. Between the ambiance, the amazing drinks and the killer staff, this place has now been added to normal rotation. I've had the Grey Hen on my list for over a year, I finally got to go Saturday night and it was like the stars aligned for my friend and I. There's no reservations at Grey Hen as it's very small so it's first come first served. My friend and I got lucky with a 2 person table right in front. We felt like VIPs getting an exclusive table. The menu is a legit newspaper with lots of things to read. The server was wonderful and even checked with the front receptionist to see if there was room for 2 in the other experiences. That's how we were able to get into Undertow but I'll do a separate review on that one lol. I'm hoping to come back here for their burlesque show in a few months although I can't imagine how it looks in this small, exciting space. read more

We are very familiar with the Century Grand bars, and really love all of them - - Undertow, Platform 18, and Grey Hen RX. Grey Hen is now the pop-up M. E. Lee's, a Chinatown canal Street themed bar. The Big alligator hanging over the bar when it was New Orleans themed is gone and replaced by a Chinese dragon and beautiful Chinese parasols. It shares a wall with the "Angry Duckling" so look for the chickens hanging in the window. Don't forget to get a coin from the bartender to use in the phone booth! It is tiny with a few seats at the bar, a couple seats at the window looking out, and maybe six small tables? There's not a lot of room but when we went, which was relatively early at 5:30, we walked right in. Even though reservations are a must for the other two bars here, they are not available for this bar. These bartenders are true artists. The menu is a newspaper, with descriptions of the drinks being advertisements throughout the paper. If you need help choosing, just tell the bartender what flavor profile you prefer and they will suggest something. We had the Slutty Tiki and the Special Excursion. Both were fantastic! If you're coming to Platform 18 or Undertow, come a little early or plan to stay a little later to have a drink here. read more

Tried this place for the first time with my boyfriend for date night--EXCELLENT DATE NIGHT choice BTW. Ambiance is perfect. No reservations required. Excellent customer service and drink recommendations. Super appreciative and impressed by our waitresses recommendations. This location does not have food but does have a jerky, nuts, and pickled cucumber snack (we did not try). The beverages are very complex, balanced, delicious experiences in themselves. My boyfriend and I did not have a single average cocktail. I highly recommend the chop suey, Tom kha, and chef recommends cocktails. Absolutely in love with this place. It's a pretty place in normal times, but most recently, I went to their M. E. Lee's rendition of a vintage Chinatown, and it's so classy and beautiful. All the touches are perfect. Friendly service, and although they do not take reservations, there was no wait and plenty of room available on a Saturday afternoon. It contains balvenie 21yr port barrel and balvenie 14yr caribbean rum cask. Such a pretty cocktail. They present it in a cage and then smoke it with a torch. The hubs got the chart the course which is a non alcoholic cocktail since he needed to drive afterwards and we were just at the other bar. The bartender was great. Nice and friendly. Waited for me to get my camera going so I could film the cocktail. Very sweet. I'm more of a sit at the bar and chill kind of girl, so this was definitely my vibe. I've been here a total of 3 times and each time I like this place better. I came here on a Friday night and was lucky to get a place at the bar. The bartender was great and had awesome recommendations. I'm obsessed with the new theme, NYC china town, with a focus or play on Asian dishes. I tried 3 of the gin drinks, the bell paper made me nervous because a prior experience but honestly it blew me away. He had the wonton soup twice which was served in a soup bowl with a lemongrass truffle pairing in the soup spoon. It was very aesthetically pleasing and delicious. We're usually not chocolate people but this little truffle definitely hit the mark. The shrimp walnut dish I believe was also a super cute presentation and came with I believe a little candied walnut side. Overall, this was such an amazing experience. Beware, your moneys spends itself here! I'm a sucker for over-priced cocktails and these tasted the part. I had Friday night reservations with a few friends here and we spent a small gemstone's worth at Grey Hen. The drinks themselves are beautifully curated and taste wonderful. If there is something on the menu that's not for you, the bartender can whip up any of the classics. I absolutely loved how the place was designed to mimick the New Orleans prohibition era and it took 30 min before I even noticed the alligator in the ceiling! I wish I could rate this 5 stars but the service knocked a few off. Our bartender was not the best host despite our financial investment in this establishment. We stayed our full reservation time and ordered numerous drinks, sometimes we were given "another round" that we didn't order which was added to our tab. Another instance, my friend got an adorable tea cup drink (the milk punch) and the bartender asked if he was "insecure in his masculinity" to drink out of the tea cup. We have been to both Platform 18 & Undertow at Century Grand and finally decided to check out Grey Hen RX. We were seated on the front patio, but ended up moving inside because we wanted a more intimate experience. The space is very small, and I honestly would have enjoyed the lounge more if we were seated at the bar. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the mystique of the bar. Our waiter's name was Justice I believe, and he was very pleasant. I would say he answered all of our questions confidently and we appreciate that! Now let's get to the drinks! I thoroughly enjoyed my "Raid the Cargo" cocktail. I picked up on the bergamot notes right away, and the mezcal/bourbon blend went down smoothly. I also loved my fiance's Kentucky tea themed drink. My last cocktail was the Creole Lady. Sadly, I feel like it was an afterthought. The lounge was closing early for another event, so I think this cocktail was rushed. The drink was watered down, and the presentation was absent. Initially, I was able to taste the hazelnut finish. After 5mins, the drink was completely clear, the ice melted, & the flavor was gone. I just feel like an old fashioned is supposed to get better as it ages, but this one didn't hit the mark. My boyfriend and I came in to celebrate four years together as the Grey Hen Rx is my favorite bar in AZ and right off the bat, the amazing folks at Century Grand set us up for what was one of the most magical nights of my life! We were promptly greeted upon stepping inside where they verified our IDs and got us checked in. I had noted in our reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary so the staff was quick in congratulating us and making us feel welcomed! We had arrived a few minutes early and as it was a slightly less busy time for the Grey Hen Cassie sat us almost immediately in a beautiful window seat on the patio. Our server Bre stopped by once we were seated with water and some fantastic drink recommendations, I got the Mandrake (which is my go-to "off menu" drink) and my boyfriend had The Mapmaker's Folly - both delicious and unique but our favorite drink of the evening HAD to be the Coconut Whiskey Highball! Decadent and smooth, this unprecedented cocktail had us hooked and I'm not a whiskey drinker! Definitely give it a try if you like toasted coconut! The atmosphere is next level, they really make it feel like you're sitting out on a dark, romantic patio on a quiet New Orleans night and with the sounds of Platform 18's steam whistle and train it was all the more immersive! We were so impressed by the level of care and attention to detail the team at Century Grand puts in everything they do. We were even lucky enough to get to meet Al and Rachel the extremely kind and talented GM and AGM behind the scenes of this wonderland of the senses. I can't thank them enough for their impeccable hospitality and care. The cherry on top of this magical evening came at the end of the night when my boyfriend proposed. What a cool bar! I'm sure all of them are at Century Grand, though this is the first one I've visited. The lighting and scenery are done perfectly to give the place a feel like you are stepping into another world. The drink menu is a little overwhelming! It took me a few minutes to look it over. I chose a drink that was citrusy and well balanced. The drinks are quite strong, so for my next cocktail, I tried one of the mocktails. They have interesting options available, ranging from the nonalcoholic to the very boozy and from sweet to spicy and everything in between. The gorgeous presentation of drinks matches the great taste. If you've been to other Century Grand concepts, I would categorize this one as the least immersive experience. Still, it's a gorgeous little space with a classic, old-fashioned feel. They have unique whiskey options outside of mixed drinks. Sitting at the bar is my favorite way to experience this place. I think it's great completely on it's own. The decor is so cute, looks like out of Chinatown, very red, even has a bbq duck display. The menu is so adorable and looks like a newspaper. There's so much to read and some hilarious ads. The servers are kind, hilarious, and make amazing drinks. Every drink we got was delicious and unique. We had to get the one in the Chinese take our box of course. I suggest sitting at the bar itself and talking with the servers. They let one of the costumers hit the gigantic gong as well. It was also someone's birthday that night and they pulled a trumpet from behind the bar and started playing Rudolph the red nose reindeer. I absolutely LOVE the Grey Hen Rx, and I've only been here once. Last weekend we booked a reservation and ventured out to the Century Grand to take in this Prohibition-era speakeasy experience and it was just a truly enjoyable time. Upon entering the Century Grand you are first greeted by friendly hosts who will take your name and direct you to the somewhat misty and dark waiting area reminiscent of a hidden, back alley street café in some far off locale. A host will call your name and take you to a seat at the fantastically appointed bar that just transports you back in time. Again, dark and intimate, the small cozy space just takes you away from the outside world for 90 minutes, offering a delectable variety of specialty in-house and classic cocktails that are sure to make you want to eventually sample them all. Hundreds of bottles of spirits line the back bar and side cabinets; it is an almost dizzying array of whiskys, scotch, bourbons - you name it, it's probably there. The hosts at the bar are amazingly friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. You can tell they enjoy what they do, are exceptionally good at it and are happy to have you there. The drinks we tried were all outstanding. As you settle in, let your eyes wander about the space and have fun discovering numerous things: the skulls scattered randomly around behind the bar, some in jars, on shelves. You're imagining yourself in a speakeasy that apparently had been secret apothecary at one time. Oh, and the huge alligator suspended from the ceiling. There's that. A prop, to be sure, but it all just adds to the fun and ambiance. When you visit the website, be sure to peruse it for a bit. There are three themed spaces to visit in Century Grand and they all seem to share some links to each other in terms of backstory. Just another fun aspect of visiting. So to end this somewhat rambling review, Grey Hen Rx is more than worth a visit if you are looking for an experience that will take you away for a little while. This is one of our favorite cocktail places in the valley. It is one of the three bars located within Century Grand. The concept of this place is a New Orleans courtyard vibe, a bit dark, a bit mysterious, with servers dressed up like pharmacists (hence the Rx in the name). For someone who has been to a few bars in New Orleans, I'd say this place does a good job transferring customers to the other side of the country. I loved sitting in the courtyard and people watch those who were waiting to get into Platform 18 (the other bar with the concept of being inside a train). The servers were very friendly and knowledgeable with recommendations. They have a huge selection of whisky and whisky-based cocktails. Some of their drinks can be strong in terms of spirit forward with a bitter finish. We love it, but I also see that others might not like it. I am not sure if they offer any food, so it might be a good idea to get food elsewhere before coming here. The good news is that this place is near many food and drink places. One of the unique cocktails that I tried here is a clarified milk punch. They served it in a teacup with a side of the homemade biscuits. It was the best milk punch cocktail that I have ever had! I heard they are doing a Chinese-themed menu right now, and I cannot wait to try it out. I do not think this place makes reservations, so it might be a first come, first serve situation. There is a parking lot outside of the building, but since all three bars share one space, it could fill up quickly. So carpool would be good if you have a large party. read more

My first time into Grey Hen since its renovation. The space is cozy (well, if you think sitting below an 18ft alligator is cozy- I do!) and the walls filled with bottles. Since my friend is celebrating dry January we started with Dr. Cottley's Experimental "American Whiskey" which looked like a real cocktail and tasted lovely. It's harder than it should be to find no and low-abv drinks that don't taste like a juice box, but the Grey Hen menu has multiple options. My second drink was even better: a low-abv twist on a martinez that the talented bartender made with vermouth, sherry, campari. Honestly the best drink I've had out in a long time. My gf's no-alcohol shrub drink may have turned me on to these vinegar creations. I usually avoid shrubs bc they taste so astringent, but not here- perfectly balanced. Our server was super personable, really helpful in describing the menu and creating beautiful and tasty cocktails based on what we were looking for. My friend brought me here to show off the Phoenix area's drinking scene and I was amazed all the way through. The staff were all very attentive and answered our every question regarding the drinks. They even accommodated our request to have a drink from one of the other bars (there are 3 total bars in the complex under the same management). Each drink we had was a unique experience and honestly it was not as expensive as I thought it would be.
