We are long time Rustys patrons, but prices have hiked and food quality has gone downhill. $9 for two tiny brisket tacos and we threw one after eating the first because the meat tasted off. They got our order wrong, made shrimp when we ordered grilled fish tacos, and argued with us saying that we ordered shrimp (how does "fish" sound like "shrimp"?). The old Rustys would not have done that, and for these and other reasons we suspect it has new ownership-- judging from not recognizing any of the employees, price hikes, and the music being very different. My favorite breakfast taco of all time is the migas taco here. When in doubt, this is the go to spot, especially if you're hungover. I enjoy all their tacos but I typically order the fried Baja dynamite shrimp, migas, and texican. Their dillas are solid too, but I've never met a dilla I didn't like. I've lived all over Dallas and there have been other Rusty Taco locations that I've lived closer to and I've always chosen to go to this one because the people and staff make it great. Ok, I get it... Rusty Taco recently opened, and the word is just getting out. It's why I went there. I love tacos (duh). So if I can try a new place to eat one of my favorite foods, then I'm in without a second thought. The restaurant is easy to find and in plain sight right on the corner of the intersection. But this proved to be the easiest part of the adventure. Parking is practically nonexistent. We pulled into the parking lot (only 10-15 spots) but it was full. I made a 5 point turn and we get back on the street. After a lap and a half around the entire block we parked in a neighboring restaurant's lot. Yes! I'm in the door, let's eat! FALSE. Please be aware that the ordering counter is not very fast. So if it's as crowded as it was this weekend, be prepared to stand in line at least 15 minutes. They also had a clever pitch at the counter to under-promise and over-deliver by telling me I would get my food in 30 minutes, and delivering it in 10. This was all too obvious of a tactic since 4 small tacos should not take anywhere near 30 minutes (let alone 10). I ordered 4 tacos (picadillo, fajita, shrimp, and the Rusty Taco), chips & queso, and two Coronas. Total cost was about $18 which wasn't bad since the beers were $3.50 a piece. When the food came, it didn't look too bad, but I was in for disappointment. The picadillo taco lacked any flavor and was quite dry. The shrimp taco wasn't horrible, but I've had much better and other places don't use those baby shrimp you find on Red Lobster salads. The Fajita taco wasn't as dry simply because of the sautéed onions, but still wasn't great on the flavor meter. I would say that you could try and add some of the salsa to moisten up the taco, but it really won't help. Lastly the signature Rusty Taco was the driest pork I've ever had. I would never serve pork like that. So I tried a new place and it didn't work out. It happens. Best of luck to Rusty to work out issues, but I won't be going back. Ah, Brett beat me to the first review! Anyway, Rusty Taco was slammed for lunch today. The line was literally out the door. Luckily, it moved pretty quickly. Like Brett said, they were out of a few things, but I ordered a picadillo, a brisket and a fried fish taco. It took awhile, but I'm not going to dock them a star for that considering that it's only their second day and they were completely swamped. When they did call my name, I was treated to three tacos, slightly bigger than Fuel City and infinitely less greasy. The fish was undoubtedly my favorite. Without knowing the background of rusty taco and when I moved to the villages off of lovers I found out that the original is on Greenville ave I was super excited. I'm a big fan of street tacos, now all their tacos aren't the best I do have my favorite that I will always order and keep me coming back for! My lil ones like the chips n salsas and queso and chicken tacos. The service is usually pretty awesome ive never been shorted a taco or overcharged. There is an outside seating area which came in very handy during the pandemic. I had made an online order spending nearly $50. Got to the location to pick up my order. When I arrived at the time it said it would be ready the cashier looked confused and clueless about my order. I continued to wait. Over an hour and a half had passed and still no food. THEY STARTED TO CLOSE DOWN THE STORE FOR THE NIGHT. I went back and inquired about my order. The cashier still looked clueless. Then came back and said my order hadn't been started yet because they "didn't know about it". I didn't get my food until 10:38 pm. I wanted a refund but they said they couldn't give it to me because "they had already shut down the system." I called the next day to speak to the manager about what had happened. I was expecting much better since I found the name on a list of best taco shops to try in Dallas. I should've slowed down from my hurry and checked trusty Yelp to see the stars on this joint. I have a rule that no taco place in Dallas is worth trying if there are less than four stars. The chips and salsa were solid, but it's hard to get that wrong. The tacos on the other hand were not spectacular. I also didn't think the quality of the chicken inside mine was very good. I can see why there was no one in there when we walked in. We attributed it to the time, since it was 1:30 on a workday, but I think if it were better quality there still would've been a crowd. All in all, I recommend satisfying your taco craving elsewhere. I especially enjoyed the pulled pork tacos and steak fajita taco. The food was presented well, and was pleasing to look at as it was tasty. I ordered another one, also. It was well made but was a flavor profile I didn't enjoy overly much, but that's my issue not an issue with the food. I'm definitely right up the "meh" alley on this one. Wavering between 1 and 2 stars. I mean, I get it. It's a $2 fast food street taco. Quick and easy. But I think the downfall is that, because of the price, the ingredients tend to be sacrificed. The eggs are liquid product, the meat is "batch cooked" so not cooked to order (means it could be sitting there for 30+ minutes), the tortillas are crap, and the chips/salsa/queso are just generic. I will admit that I was on a kick here for a while. I hadn't been to many other taco places. The BBQ brisket here is still pretty decent, but everything else has been done elsewhere. And done better. The concept isn't hard to grasp, but the tacos just don't measure up to the other taco places around in my opinion. I would definitely put Rusty Taco next to a Taco Cabana or Fuzzy's. It's the same quality, the same service, the same sort of "fast food" feel to it. Although I will give Rusty points for having a neat outdoor seating area and sticking to the grungy theme of old country music. It's a nice hang out for SMU students, the domestic beer is cheap. However, if you are hungry...don't come here with less than $20 in your wallet. Tried it with the wife for lunch today and was looking forward to it. We love tacos and it is our mission before we leave Dallas to try all the taquerias at least once. Those we like we will repeat. Tacos are $2 each, which is a bit high considering the fillings and what you can get at Mia Pueblito (for instance). I got brisket, fish taco, and chicken. The chicken was tender but there were only a few pieces. The piece of fish was the smallest I have ever seen in my life, maybe one ounce? The brisket taco was good and by far the best of my selections. The wife got fish taco, fajita, and something else. Her impressions were the same as mine--skimpy fillings. We both left hungry. The beef is soft, the onions are soft and the tortilla is soft.... there needs to be something diff because it gets mushy after you eat more than 2 bites! the shrimp was good as well but there was way to much sauce. idk if the shrimp is fresh but it's cooked nicely with a crispy shell and putting the amount of sauce on top makes the shrimp soggy if it sits too long. Also the sause overpowered the rest of the other flavors. The chicken was okay, it was a little on the dry side but it was okay. As somewhere I have heard amazing things about and been dying to try. They were super quick once we ordered but the line was long and through only had one cashier. Good thing you have lots to look at while you wait. Picking one taco was hard, so I ended up getting two. Can't beat the price of $5ish for 2 tacos! Loved the Rusty taco (pork, onions, cilantro and pineapple!!) just a hint of heat, but not too spicy. Just FYI, the pineapple is cold - I was expecting it to be a hot filling. The Brisket taco was also delicious - it comes with queso fresco, cilantro and onions. While it was juicy and soft - I loved that it wasn't super messy to eat. Their corn taco tortillas were legit! Made everything that much better! I am a taco fan and Rusty Taco delivers wonderful flavors. The steak is juicy and packed full of delight. The "Rusty Taco" taco was surprising. It comes with pineapple chunks, which one would think it may ruin a taco..but it gave the taco a very refreshing flavor. The margarita was the star of the show. Perfect mix of tequilla...rendering it STRONG! Was hesitant to order the frozen drink because it's typically weak at other establishments, but Rusty Taco did right by me. The atmosphere was very open and clean. It's located in an old gas station, making it very eclectic. They do have a taco eating contest, which 35 tacos so far is the record. Not sure the prize.
