Not too far from the deep ellum district is Taqueria el Arquito! The inside is a bit small but there is a ton of outdoor seating. I went before the dinner rush and got a gordito for 5$ which is honestly a really good deal because it was really filling! They let you choose from a variety of meats from trompo, carnitas, etc. I ended up getting barbacoa but I think they specialize in trompo because it was in a lot of their ads around the restaurant. Next time I go I'll get that. I got their elote to go which came with red sauce in a baggie and a whole lot of butter and crema. I like that the red sauce is separate because it allows you to control the spice level! I ended up only using like half the bag because it was pretty spicy. The green sauce they give you is sooo good and is the perfect amount of spiciness for someone who can't handle heat too well. It's tangy and has a blend of some herbs and cilantro, which really compliments whatever dish you get. The workers were so sweet as well and tied up my to-go order very neatly- no spills on the way back home!! Solid taco spot on the end of Deep Ellum near Canton St. This place has indoor and outdoor seating and has an inviting space for meeting with friends and catching the sun while eating. I ordered the mi special which came with 3 tacos, rice and beans. The meat I chose was chicken fajita. Everything was solid. The chicken was a bit dry. I think this would've been a 5 if the chicken was more moist. I hope that's something that can be improved. read more

Visited this place for the first time around 8:00 PM. The restaurant was completely dead, and now I know why. We threw $60 plus what my sister n mom spent down the trash for an incredibly disappointing experience. ​Almost all of our food--including the tacos, quesadilla, and corn in a cup--arrived ice-cold. When my sister told the staff her entire plate of chilaquiles was freezing, the employee just asked, "What should I do?" instead of taking initiative. When she asked for it to be fixed, they literally just threw her plate into a microwave. For a $60 meal, that is completely unacceptable. ​On top of the terrible food handling, the restaurant's cleanliness is a major red flag. The bathroom toilet was covered in water all over the floor. If they care this little about basic hygiene and serving hot food, I'd hate to see the state of the kitchen. Save your hard-earned money and go somewhere else. I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, a place that does not play about traditional, Mexican dishes, passed down through generations. Mexican food, in the city and home that I grew up in, was to be shared, enjoyed with those you love. When I learned I'd be moving to Dallas, I was so scared I wouldn't find a place that made me feel like I was eating at home with those I loved. I was going to miss seeing families working together to make dishes they loved. I was going to miss trying new places and wanting my Denver family to visit, just so we could go there together. Well, four years after moving to Dallas, I've found the place. The place that made me call my grandmother and schedule a time for her to come see me so we could eat here together. This morning, I was scrolling on TikTok, as I haven't been feeling well and took the day off to rest. I noticed that this place opened two minutes from me; there are no accidents. I showered, prayed the food would be good, and looped around Deep Ellum's traffic to visit. As soon as I walked up, I noticed the beautiful balcony. It'll be a great space for when they get super busy (and it's isn't so cold out). I walked in and was greeted by everyone! It was so welcoming, very refreshing. I complimented them on their marketing, as their Instagram is truly beautiful, and ordered three barbacoa tacos with cilantro, onion, and lime. I asked for a hot salsa, which they gave me three to choose from. I dressed my tacos and sat in their gorgeous, industrial indoor space. As soon as I took a bite, I became grateful. Thank GOD! A genuine Mexican food spot! And it's CLOSE! I started thinking about all the time I plan to spend here, eating and laughing with my Dallas family until Denver can arrive. I started thinking about the late nights and the dedication I'll be able to produce here, as I'm working on a big degree. I am most of all thankful for the quality of the food. The flavors are magnificent. The staff is kind, welcoming, patient. I am so excited to eat here and I am thankful I'll be here to see their newest location thrive. read more

The Caldo de Res here is one of the top 10 eats in Dallas. Not the omakase, supper club, tasting menu bullshit that seems to be taking over this city along with its $250+ pp delusions of grandeur. No, it's this $13.99 bowl of Beef Shank soup/stew with accoutrements, that can feed an army and frankly bring back the dead to life. It's shockingly good, criminally inexpensive, and abundantly generous. I generally tend to avoid Deep Ellum these days, but this is worth the trip everytime. read more

I wanted to give this place another shot every visit has been a gamble.... Every time I eat their steak or the trompa I get the sh*ts There have been times that I've looked through the window to the kitchen and you can see that the rotisserie is not even turned on... it's not even rotating which is supposed to keep it under temperature to avoid bacteria from developing... You have to remember what Trompa is .. it's just layers of butterflied raw chicken stacked on top of each other and then cooked on a rotating spit.. When the heat is not on and keeping it, warm, bacteria develops throughout that stack of meat... causing food poisoning. Secondly, the steak usually is good, but I'm starting to worry if their salsa is that they prepackage or the meat itself is contaminated... Because every time I have it, I end up with bad diarrhea and feeling sick for almost 48 hours... And it takes a week to recover from. I'm never eating from this place again and I strongly advise you steer clear of this location. . read more

I was in the area working and wanted something fast. Location is nothing to write home about, but it's a hidden jem. I saw the menu and the tacos are a little pricey, so I ordered the trompo special 10 tacos for 18buks. Their salsa perrona is to-die-for (I want to drink it...even my dog whines for it). They have horchata. The staff, who are always smiling, remember what you always order and call you "amiga".
