Its unfortunate I feel compelled to write this review update. I had Rusty's visit my parents house today since the external unit was making some noise on shut down, and given how great they were in 2023 when I needed them, it seemed like a no brainer. Nothing was declared wrong with their unit besides the LRA being higher than normal. (Apparently reading 129 when the rec on the unit is 120). So when I arrived the young tech was attempting to upsell my father on Compressor protection to solve this at a cost of $600, and stating to both of us at that time that the issue would only get worse and the compressor was the most expensive part of the unit to replace if it goes out (correct). He said $600 was cheaper than a compressor replacement (also correct). After some basic research I realized they were being upsold. Sure protection is good, But if your unit is already covering most of the bases a protector would, then why install one? The upsell statement was.... "Without this your unit will be unprotected and your LRV values are only going to continue to get worse, compressors are thousands to replace" It felt like doom tactics and for a second in my mind I was like, we should just do this. I took a photo of my units information and serial, threw it in to chat GPT. It told me the following about my unit. " What you have Brand: Lennox Model: ML17XP1-048-230A01 Type: Heat pump (not just AC) Size: 4 ton system Refrigerant: R-410A Voltage: 208/230V system (not 120V)" " Does your system already have protection? Yes--your Lennox ML17 series includes: Internal compressor overload protection Anti-short-cycle delay (via thermostat/control board) Standard electrical safeguards required by code So you already have basic built-in protection " I cross referenced this with the manual too. So maybe he meant "Compressor saver"? Like a hard start kit, who knows I'm not an AC tech, back to the internet. Well looks like my unit does not need or benefit from this since its only 2-3 years old and our capacitor was almost on point with the expected readout so starting was likely not an issue. I also saw that 129 was still within the expected +/- 10% tolerance even if on the higher side. So in a nutshell I am disappointed with the outcome here. I understand a bit of salesmanship is required for a successful biz, but $600 of not required add-ons for a unit that has most of it already doesn't feel honest. Not to mention that feedback online was to expect to pay $350-450 and that $600 and above was considered very expensive. And lets say I am totally off the mark here and my research is off, then in that case the young tech seriously failed to explain in detail about the topic. The tech that visited me in 2023 was so knowledgable and at no point did I feel like I was being upsold on things I didn't need. There was a trust bond there almost immediately with that guy. I went back to read reviews and saw that the same has happened to some of your other customers (Quincy . R from literally 2 weeks ago) Your biz was EXCELLENT! I raved about you guys to my neighbors in the past. Some of them even booked you. I know you guys are better than this. Sadly i'll have to take my biz and recommendations else where from here on. Very transparent conversation about costs and they were out to my house in under an hour ! Oh and did I mention it was on a Saturday and a free estimate ? When I needed someone to help me with my AC, Rusty's Air Conditioning and Heating was there. I paid 15 a month for their "monthly service". They would scheduled appointments to come out and do a tune up. I am loyal to the core but sadly that has run its course. I had them come out this past Wednesday and do a tune up. The tech said I needed a compressor saver and wanted to charge 500ish dollars. I felt like I wanted to shop around and I'm glad I did. I had another company (FRESH AMERICAN AIR) come out and look at my AC. The owner (ARMANDO BARRAZA) didn't find anything out of range. All my components are running within spec. He also made a video showing me all the components. He also showed me a video of how dirty my unit was (mold, dust)- even after the Rusty's tech said he cleaned it. Also, Armando showed me how there was air leaking out of my unit- which the Rusty's tech did not catch or mention. I felt we paid them for nothing. I cancelled my services with them. Just a cautionary tale. You know it's bad enough we have a Goverment that will screws at every turning point. But then you have companies like this. So I called this company to come out. They asked how old my unit was I thought it was 15 years I guess 17 years. The unit has been running good. But it wasn't blowing as cold so I figured it just needed to be recharged. Now when I asked how much the service to come out. They say there is no cost if you agree to the work that they recommend. Okay being that I just need a charge I was okay with that. There tech comes out says that they can't even service a unit that old. Also told me that the Freon they use can't be used on this unit anymore cause of how old it is. So they just want to sale me a new unit, right off the bat. Well they could recharge the unit ( R-22 ) you just take the old Freon out and use what is allowed by regulations. But oh no they just want to sale a new unit. My friend use to work for a couple AC companies in the valley. He said, it is so pushed on the techs to sale 1st, be a trades men second. So these guys couldn't even do anything, nothing!! They still charged me the 89$?? Can you believe that? Couldn't do anything but still wanted to charge us the 89$. Now if you look at there website and there reviews. You would think God himself reached down and blessed these folks with perfect reviews. Now if you believe a company is that perfect!? Than this is the company for you. It's just really sad that we have business that will screw the poor over as much as they can. I promise this will come back on these guys by ten fold!! I will also be filing a complaint with the better business. Just cause I don't have a lot of money. Doesn't mean I don't know people that have a lot of money. Rusty came to our rescue late on a Friday afternoon, after we received an exorbitant quote from another company. He was friendly, professional, and helped us out with some coolant to last us until he could get the needed parts and replace them. Since we were experiencing 100 degree days without air conditioning, that was a huge blessing! The other company was going to charge us at least 1/3 more than Rusty and they did not supply us with emergency coolant. A $78 capacitor was replaced for an additional $480.07 in just a few minutes (under 10 min). I expect to pay a fair markup and for labor involved, but over 500% markup on the capacitor I consider excessive. A 5 for service, but a 1 for value!
