Ah, Rutaz. I've been to three locations, and never had a bad experience. Although I tell myself I'll stray from my usual (the chicken enchiladas are so good!!!), I always come back to my one true love... Garlic Chicken Salad. How can something so simple deliver such a great punch?! Garlic chicken, walnuts, tomatoes, crunchy noodles, and a super generous portion of avocado, all topped with balsamic. And when I say "Large Salad", I mean LARGE. I take back half of the salad to eat later on (soggy salad, don't judge!). Don't forget to start with the monthly special of dip; I've had all sorts and never been disappointed. From bbq themed to mango to beans, you'd be crazy not to spend 49c to try it! The location in Tustin is the best of them all. I am a creature of habit so I typically get the same thing or a rotation of the same thing but their food is amazing! They also have a quaint area for local artists to sell their art/jewelry, etc which is charming. My go to favorite is the Garlic Chicken Salad.....sooooo satisfying! First, it is HUGE -- definitely share worthy. If you order to go, always ask for double dressing as the salad is enough for two people or two meals so you want to have enough. The seasonal Strawberry Summer Salad is also amazing and my daughters favorite. NOTE: the Orange location has a slightly different variation of the salad and in my opinion not as good. They cater to the Chapman University students who tend to be more healthy conscious so the yumminess factor goes wayyyy down. The Mediterranean pita sandwich is also amazing. It is stuffed full so often breaks the pita bread but first world problems right? lol My ALWAYS go to drink is their passion tea -- it is amazing and never pass the desserts. They make the BEST lemon bar on the planet and the carrot cake is DEVINE and I hate carrot cake. In fact, you can pre order a carrot cake which I do for parties at holiday time for $25.00 and no joke it weighs 8 pounds!! I know because I weighed it. haaa. We started with their special appetizer. It has corn and I'm not sure what else, but it was delicious. It was served with tortilla chips. Yum! I was craving vegetables, I was in the right place! It had bite sized pieces of cauliflower, zucchini, onions covered in cheese and over a bed of rice. It was good but could have used a little sauce. Parking - there is a parking structure towards the back area if you take South C Street. Service - this is where I have to give 6 stars. Our servers who checked in on us were very friendly and attentive. Seriously, as in Southern hospitality friendliness. Our food took about 15-20 minutes since it was rush hour lunch. Decor/atmosphere - 5 stars. I love the old town, country, homey feeling and decor of this place. Food - Two had the garlic chicken salad (seems to be a crowd fave here), a caesar salad/ soup bowl, chicken cacciator, and I tried the Southwest bowl. This is what I surveyed from the group: two loved their GCS, chicken cacciator was too heavy, i was not a big fan of my southwest bowl, and the caesar salad was good enough. So average of 4 stars. Poor service and organization. I've eaten here several times, and while the food is decent, it's the slow, poor service that made me decide never to come back after today. Restaurant was moderately busy at 2:00 on a Saturday. We put our name down for outside seating and then proceeded to watch empty tables go unbussed for a long time. When they finally cleared a table, the hostess called a party farther down on the wait list than those next on the list. Why? I have no idea. Another party complained and the response was "oh, I don't know how that happened" but no attempt to correct the situation. My daughter ate here a few weeks ago and similarly said the service was turtle slow and rude. Stay away from this place. read more

I walked in to Rutabegorz a little after noon today. The place was super busy. I ordered the pear chicken candied walnut salad. My server was very nice. The ambience was fabulous! But I noticed I kept finding bones in my organic boneless skinless chicken. I told the waitress before I ordered that I had never been there before so when she brought the check she asked me if I would be back. I told her I would because I thought that place was really neat but that I wouldn't order chicken because my chicken had bones in it. She was very surprised and she took the salad off my receipt. I love the quirkiness of this place. Service is mellow and friendly, portions are gigantic and overall, I feel like you can eat pretty healthy here. Be warned: the salads are HUGE! Two people can easily share a salad and both will feel like they've eaten a full entree salad. I don't typically order salads when I go out to eat, but Rutaz has the best salads in my opinion. With so many past reviews I suppose the best I can do is affirm that Rutabegorz continues to serve delicious fresh food with friendly service. The menu is big, but the salads are just so great, so I never really get around to trying the sandwiches and wraps, but one of these days I will. My favorite is the Thai Veggie salad, which is one of their big melamine mixing bowls loaded with mass quantities of lettuce and veggies. The peanuts add the perfect flavor and crunch. This was my second time coming to this place, the first time was nice and food was good. The second time, not so great. We were told to pick a table and sit. The waitress came over took our drink orders and asked if we were ready to order. I was not ready so I asked for a few more minutes. Big mistake since it took our waitress to come back and take our order more than 25 mins. After sitting there and ordering we were excited for our food. I had ordered a black bean chili burrito. Just the chili no meat. My waitress had asked if I'd like to add any chicken or shrimp to which I said no. We sat and waited for our food. Finally my friends sandwiches came out and the bread was completely burned on both sides so she asked to have it remade, the bread had been made way past well done. Then my burrito came and I was so excited to cut into it and eat since I had the chili before and it had been great. As soon as I cut into my burrito I could smell chicken. I am very fond of the cockaleeky soup (creamy and full of chicken and wild rice), but all their soups are freshly made in their kitchen. And the peasant mushrooms, stuffed and topped with melted cheese, on top of a divine rice pilaf is enough to make me cry. I really like the venue/decor, it feels like I am in someone's house. Prices seem pretty high for the portions, and the taste of the food. I really wanted to like the food here, I've been back a few times, but so far I have been very unimpressed with the food here. The menu is very big here, so maybe I will go back and try one last time. I had a bowl of their black bean chili served with melted cheese and plenty of cooked tomatoes. There was even a slice of watermelon and a few pieces of lettuce on the side and... sour cream...nice touch! I had enough to take home. The cornbread, also included, was disappointing. In Tustin, there's a quaint area known as Old Town Tustin and that's where you'll find Rutabegorz - a tiny cafe that is unlike any other. When I was working in the area, a co-worker once took me here for lunch to celebrate a project we had both finished. At that time, I fell in love with this wonderfully delightful establishment and the explosion of flavors that the food had to offer. I wanted to come back and visit but hence I no longer work there or live nearby. Yesterday afforded the perfect opportunity however. I was literally down the street in Santa Ana for our summer season marathon kickoff and asked a friend to join me here for lunch. Rutabegorz is located in a corner off of El Camino Real so can be hard to place but just look for the picnic tables and umbrellas. It's tiny and seating is first come, first serve so find a spot you like and grab it. My friend and I grabbed a high wooden booth that wasn't exactly comfortable but our waitress was quick to notice us and bring out the tropical iced teas we ordered. The menu offers an abundance of choices. You can easily let your mind wander over the crazy combinations and plate descriptions and it's often hard to decide what to choose. What I like it that everything is vegetarian friendly here even though they serve a good offering of meat dishes. Often the veggies are ignored for starchy items but you can get your 5 food groups here and leave with a healthy satisfying meal. My veggie enchiladas were stuffed with a nice selection of zucchinis, onions, tomatoes, carrots, tomatoes, and potatoes and topped modestly with cheese with a bed of rice and tortilla chips. My friend's garlic chicken salad was also just as amazing. She put it best by saying "it's so good, all the flavors are just bursting in my mouth." Nice! This is Keto Rodney, starting what I hope are the first of many posts about keto friendly options at restaurants I go to. This place was able to put together a turkey sandwich (no mayo, no bread) along with a 1/2 Dala salad (no carrots and ranch dressing). I did realize after I got the food that it has a little too much tomato and will ask them to limit it to 1 slice next time as I'm having the 1/2 salad for my carbs. The salad has greens, cucumber slices and sun flower seeds. My waitress is also on the keto diet and was very helpful and supportive of my questions about options that might work and knew clearly what things to hold back on (pasta salad with the sandwich). However, I do have a sensitive stomach and my friends seen no problem with the food so I guess I'm just the odd case. But I would still come back and try again. I'm a fan of Rutabegorz but today wasn't the greatest experience for everyone in our group for lunch. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup and shrimp quesadilla & both were tasty. However, one of the ladies in our group ordered a veggie burger that was clearly warmed in the microwave. It wasn't worth $10. Otherwise, everyone's food was good. But I must mention that our waitress wasn't in the greatest mood by the service that we received. No one wants to be served with no enthusiasm. So, we may cross this location off of our list of restaurants to visit for lunch. read more

Not a bad place at all the interior is very homey and quaint the booths were cute and the overall style is very friendly. I found it interesting you seat yourself and the serves come by and take your orders. It was busy on a saturday at about noon but still pretty good. I got the squaw chicken salad sandwich with potato cheese soup. I like the whole wheat crackers they provide for your soup. We even tried their appetizer special of hummus and pita. I like the food overall the bread was really yummy on the sandwich I would probably order take out next time, since it does seem to get hectic.
