Really delicious lobster - super sweet meat perfectly cooked - though the rest of the meal (sides and pie) was just ok. Friendly, efficient service. We had a wait, but they took drink orders while we waited, and they kept people moving. Definitely recommend if you're staying around Hancock, where there aren't as many restaurants as further south. read more

On a lobster get away and found this gem! Service and food is excellent! Shannon was our waitress and very attentive to our needs and kept our table clean, and was quick in delivering food! We went to another place last night that was horrible and 100.00 more but the food and service here was 100 times better! We got the lazy lobster, baked stuffed lobster, twin lobster with mussels and clams, single lobster with corn clams and mussels we sure wasn't walking our hungry .... very yummy and would definitely go back here again!! read more

It took a very long time to be seated, but the staff was working hard and was friendly. We were able to get an appetizer clam strip portion which was nice compared to the massive portions on the menu. The steamed lobsters were good. read more

Our experience here was definitely not the best it could have been. It really didn't start off right since the waitress was very busy and took a long time to greet our table and when she did you could tell it just wasn't her night. She seemed rushed and hurried and didn't make us feel real welcome. Now it wasn't just this that made it a forgettable meal. The meal itself wasn't really good. On a recommendation from a local, we came here on a Tuesday night for lobster. We had a 7 person group and called ahead. Which was a really good thing, because they were really busy. It felt like a little divey, mostly families and tourists. Seemed like really decent prices for lobster, and they were good, cooked well and served with butter. We also got the lobster bisque and it was great. The ahi tuna was decent, a little overcooked for medium-rare and not sesame crusted as advertised, though it came with two sauces that were tasty. The onion rings came in a giant pile, and the spicy potato bites were hot and crunchy (not all that spicy though) and served with a Sriracha mayo sauce. We started with Lobster bites which were fried well and delicious, big chunks of lobster. Decent prices for beer, and though short on waitstaff, our waitress did a great job. Basically, if you get what this place is known for... You'll be golden. The lobster was exactly what we were searching for, and we didn't have to go all the way into bar harbor. read more

There are a thousand places to have lobster near Bar Harbor. (Thank God) Ruth and Whimpys is just one of them. A cute little place off Hwy. 1, with indoor and outdoor seating. Yes they have lobster but I really enjoyed the lobster bites. This place really knows how to keep it's oil clean. Be sure to have the blueberry pie or crumble. Yummy. Super helpful and friendly staff too. I very much enjoyed reading all the personalized license plates from all over. Check this place out. read more

5 Stars earned by the wonderful waitstaff and fun local vibe. And the blueberry raspberry crisp with ice cream that was delicious, though we were not sure why it was served in an ice cream sundae cup. Our main courses however were truly a disappointment. My lobster was so absurdly overcooked that the claw was actually inedible. My fiancé who generally has a generous food tolerance could not even swallow it. Because the food took so long to come out we wondered if maybe they forgot to take it out of the boil pot? Hard to imagine they are regularly serving lobster like this. We stopped here for lunch on our way to Bar Harbor. How fortunate. This place is a find. They have an extensive menu and everything looks good. We had clam chowder that was as good as it gets. The portion they call "a cup" was actually a 12 ounce bowl. We had lobster rolls for the main course which were probably the best we ever ate and for $11.95 on the lunch special were a bargain. The accompanying thin onion rings were crisp and fried to order. They boil the lobsters right outside in their lobster pound. The collection of beer bottles and model cars is incredible and fills every wall in all of the rooms. Damn, it doesn't get any better than this. Great friendly staff and great food at reasonable, nay, bargain prices. read more

Wow! I just realized that I had never posted a review on Yelp, despite the several times I've dined there. Ruth & Wimpy's is a memorable Maine experience in addition to having great food. You know that as you are approaching and see a large 11' lobster attacking a full size lobster boat. Behind this is very touristy lobster shed. I've probably seen hundred of people posing with Wilbur for their "Maine" vacation shots as I've passed by for the last 15 years. Now for the food there, are 30+ choices just for the lobster! You need to enjoy a few tasty beverages and soak up some Down East ambience before consulting the menu. Sipping on a Geary(a pale ale), I checked out their extensive beer bottle, stein and hilarious ceiling poster collections (see photos) in our area. I spotted the model car and license plate collections on the other side of the building. I try to order something other than my favorite which is their Seafood Imperial - Lobster, Shrimp, Haddock & scallop sautéed in a rich cheese sauce. I sometimes stray to the Seafood Fettuccine, Haddock Casserole and Creamy Shrimp Scampi. My next time will be to try their new Seafood Margarita! It has Shrimp, Octopus, Squid & Mussels, Surimi with a garlic butter sauce over spaghetti noodles topped with fresh tomatoes. I take home the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cream pie so no one hears me making the "yummy" sounds as my taste buds explode. read more

Less than one / not so much on food, but on but the attitude! Beware out of towners!!! I did not like the scorched milk lobster stew. Immediately, while the waitress was still at our table, I told her no way. The lobster was tough and the milk scorched taste against it. She had nerve to vehemently not remove this from our bill! No offer of a replacement. No refill even if our drinks. My sandwich was good. Salad seemed fresh. Over cooked baked potato, just s plain no flavor hamburger served as what was promoted hamburger steak. Skip the onion rings. Mostly just overly breaded little minute strands of onion- which were hard to find. The attitude of not budging on removal of stew ($9.95 for a small salad bowl! Not even a soup bowl!- not that these folks could discern the difference) makes me shout, "don't go- do not patronize this place"! Beware! Skip going. read more

Would love to leave a review on the food, its a shame I never got served. I go there with a date, we are standing by the hostess sign for 20 minutes, with waitresses walking back and forth the whole time...No one says anything to us. Not even a smile. Then there are people behind us who just walked in and a waitress goes right up to them and tells them to sign a list or something? Was it because my date was black? Hate to say it but we both did not see it any other way. Our table ordered 3 burgers and a shrimp pasta dish. The burgers smelled strange possibly like old meat. They were fully cooked through despite each being ordered on the rare side which made me think the cook knew not to serve bad meat undercooked. It was gross. A bunch of classmates and I took advantage of Patriots Day + the extra day off of school MIT decided to grant us and went up to Maine. This was our last stop for lunch before driving back to Boston and I'm glad we did it. The staff was really friendly to us- even with one of us coming in with a half-full half gallon of milk. (uh, we were staying in a vacation home and the milk was left over and the "don't waste food" message really resonated with some of us). I got the lobster roll combo that comes with a lobster roll and a cup of lobster bisque. Plus: the bisque had big chunks of lobster in it. Minus: the bisque itself basically tasted like nothing. Maybe milky water. The roll itself was good, no complaints there. The best was the blueberry cobbler at the end. Wild Maine blueberries....mmmm....yummy. Of course the gigantic lobster statue outside also screamed photo op. It's a fun, unpretentious place. read more

We all had high hopes for Ruth and Wimpys as we were staying nearby and read good things about the lobster roll. I hate that I have to write a bad review but this was terrible enough I feel I need to warn others. First impressions : typical lobster boil tanks outside, check! Kitschy giant lobster for photo ops with kids, check! Walk inside and ask for a table for 5 and a High chair....baffled looks... Ok, they were able to figure out we would fit on one side of the 12 top in 10 minutes. Service problems start to show. More later. Ordered lobster rolls, lobster dinner, seafood soup, clam chowder, fried clams, chicken quesadilla and a child's past and meatball. The fried clams were good, everything else was a total failure. The famous lobster roll was a collection of tiny scraps of lobster meat which, while tasty, is NOT what a Maine lobster roll should look like. No claws out the end, no chunked tail in the center. Disappointing The soup was almost edible with lots of salt and pepper, flavored milk water. Skip this. I won't review the chicken as I don't feel it's fair, it's a seafood place. I will mention the kids pasta however as my 3 year old eats pasta anywhere we go. He wouldn't eat this. I tasted the meatball and was dumbfounded as to what it might have been made from. It was not edible. If there was a manager in the place I would have demanded it be taken off my bill. As it were, the place was run by teenagers, no offense but basic service is not hard to teach. Like this one, before you ask about dessert, clear the dirty dinner dishes. Our blueberry cobbler ( pretty good) was delivered to the table and sat right next to the lobster carcass. As she was walking away, I asked again to have the table cleared. To be fair, everyone here was really nice, just not trained at all. Drinks not refilled once, the tables around us were getting frustrated as well so i know it was not just one server. This is primarily a burger and sandwich restaurant that, of course, also features the seafood of Maine: lobster, oysters, mussels, salmon, etc. The inside decor sort of reminds me of a roadhouse with its license plates from every state, unique stickers with quirky messages, cartoons, and seaside trinkets like lighthouses and sails all over. There is nothing speical about the food in my opinion.... there are a lot of different burgers and sandwiches to choose from. Fried things, salad bar, pies and cobblers, that sort of thing. Good food at good prices. Service is hit or miss, usually because they are packed and understaffed. Expect to be there a while. When asked if you want your onion rings thick or thin - the thin are shoestring and the thick are really thick. Probably twice as thick as regular onion rings. We stopped in here as it had several great reviews and we were on our way back to Camden from Acadia nat'l park. We each ordered the "lazy" lobster. I had the fries and coleslaw and my hubby had the coleslaw and mashed potatoes. The dinners were just so so. Lobster was very tough (maybe the time of year?) My hubby had a slice of the blueberry pie. He said it was excellent and the best part of the whole meal. It had just come out of the oven, so was hot and juicy. Was stunned when we couldn't order lunch when our waitress whose name begins with an A arrived. We were told that it was against policy and she had to take only our drink orders! Went to this place yesterday with high hopes, it was the first night of vacation and after a day of traveling my family just wanted a nice place to eat. When we got there the wait was about 30 minutes which wouldn't have been as bad but the mosquitos while sitting outside were so bad. When we finally got seated our waitress was so stressed out and she kept leaving us in the middle of taking our orders which I thought was extremely rude. My family and I ordered the lobster with French fries for 13.99. It was 9pm and we were hungry and tired after a long day of traveling. When dinner was served I was extremely disappointed. The lobster barely had any meat in it and when I was done with the lobster I was still hungry. Overall I most likely will never come back to this place if we ever return on vacation here again. read more

Locals and summer people love this place. You can get a nice variety of seafood and grill specialities here. The chowders are OK, but the lobster rolls are excellent and there's a great deal to be had on lobster and corn at $10.95 as of October 2010. If you love kitsch, there is plenty of it decorating the walls and ceilings of the two dining rooms. Beer bottles, humorous signs, model cars, and a painting of Wilbur, the dive's mascot, are to be found here. Stop off for a picture with Wilbur before you leave. I had the lobster roll which was excellent. Tons of chunks of lobster with just the right amount of dressing. Great price, too. Also, took the bread pudding to go but don't order it. If you want a "local" lobster place, this might be it. It was packed with locals who raved about it and knew the owner, who was out front and center at the restaurant greeting guests. There are these combination seafood platters for about $20-$28. I got the salad bar buffet for around $9. You get decent greens (spinach and mixed greens) but the toppings are limited and you only get standard dressings--there wasn't like olive oil & balsamic. If you're used to really high quality salads, you might be disappointed and are better off just indulging on some clam chowder or something! I'm sure there are other great tasting options though, and might venture back for more when I visit Maine again!
