We made a 6:15 pm reservation on a Saturday to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. The restaurant was busy, but not loud. We could talk comfortably at a normal volume, which already put this place ahead of a lot of spots on a weekend night. Service set the tone immediately. Our server, Mario, was excellent. Kind, professional, attentive without hovering, and his recommendations were spot on. On top of that, the entire staff signed an anniversary card for us, which was a genuinely thoughtful touch. The manager, whose name I unfortunately did not catch, stopped by our table, congratulated us, and treated us to a dessert and two glasses of champagne on the house. That kind of hospitality is rare and it mattered. We started with the deviled eggs. They were overfilled in the best way and topped with maple bacon that complemented them perfectly. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. It was not overly creamy, had small chunks of clam, and was well seasoned. All it needed was a little black pepper, which is an easy fix. For entrées, my wife ordered the redfish and I had the Maui steak. The redfish was fresh and cooked perfectly, not dry at all, finished with a light lemony butter sauce. The couscous was properly cooked and well seasoned, not bland, and the asparagus had a subtle grilled, almost barbecue-like flavor that worked really well. My Maui steak was a 16-ounce boneless ribeye in a tangy marinade with hints of garlic and pineapple. The balance was excellent. Tender, juicy, and cooked a true medium rare. It came with smashed potatoes that were creamy and smooth without being thick or dry. Exactly how they should be. Dessert sealed it. The carrot cake was outstanding. Warm, soft, moist, not overly sweet, with fine shreds of carrot and nuts throughout. Honestly, it is arguably the best carrot cake I have ever had. Overall, this was a great experience. Service was top-notch. The manager makes regular rounds to check on tables, which shows real leadership. There are cards at the front listing the manager, assistant manager, and chefs by name, which signals pride and accountability. The only downside is the interior lighting. It is slightly dim and takes a moment for your eyes to adjust. That said, the staff more than makes up for it with warmth and professionalism. Always love eating here...the servers are fantastic and welcoming! The salads are huge and shareable. If you're sharing, they'll even split it for you before they bring them out. This trip we shared a wedge salad and my husband got his usual, which is the cheeseburger with no bun and fries. Always good and their seasoning shows off the yummy flavor of the patty. I tried something of the specials menu...steak fillet, crab cake and mashed potatoes. It was all delicious and I think the crab cake was one of the best I've ever had...nice chunks of crab and a yummy remoulade for dipping. Exceptional service and incredible food. Our cocktails were delicious, my steak and potato were cooked to perfection, and my husband really enjoyed his french dip sandwich. The carrot cake was suggested to us (even though we aren't really big carrot cake people), and wow, did it deliver. Served warm with a delicious icing, it was shockingly better than the chocolate ganache cake (which was delicious on its own). Our server (Gavin) really stole the show, though. We've dined in some exceptional places, but his attentiveness and demeanor pushed this meal into our all-time top three. Incredible for a chain restaurant. Visited J Alexander's for the first time and it did not disappoint. We were greeted warmly and promptly, then seated immediately. We had reservations so I'm sure that helped. It's a beautiful establishment with soft lighting and lots of natural light as well. The fully stocked bar was a few feet away from dining area which was perfect so as to not hear what ever was on TV during dinner. Our server was friendly and quite efficient as he shared some of his favorites on the menu. We started with cocktails and a spinach dip appetizer. The cocktails were refreshing and the dip was delicious. Our entrees included a steak w/ smashed potatoes which was juicy and delicious. The other entree was a seafood pasta that included shrimp, crab and scallops. The pasta was creamy and had a little kick to it which elevated the taste. Our first experience at J Alexander's was not at all what we were expecting. The restaurant was beautiful. We had a wonderful server who made the most delicious martini I have had. Sadly everything that came out of the kitchen was a huge disappointment. Caesar salad had potential to be great but way too heavy on the anchovies. The Maui steak was a disaster. Not once but twice it arrived at our table looking like it had been microwaved. Management apologized but the disaster was clear to us all. We may try again and order very basic items. read more

Been to a few locations for J. Alexander's. This location is a bit smaller than the ones I'm familiar with but the interior is refined if not a little plain Jane. It is still very nice for date night though. The menu is American comfort food with a more modern flair. I had a steak that was pretty decent. Service was fine but nothing outstanding. I would say that for the price point, it could be better but it's not bad. A decent choice for dinner but don't expect to be wowed. read more

Tonight's dinner was perfect from the friendly staff, to the ambiance of the restaurant and of course the food and drinks. Highly recommend the wedge salad to start, it was delicious. The bread and butter were brought out super fresh and hot. But the star of the evening was the delicious Tuscan steak, cooked to perfection with a side of mashed potatoes. "Post Holiday Shenanigans" This year my company decided to expand our reach in San Antonio and ventured a little further out for our Post Holiday Meal. After a few other site visits, I decided to request this venue because of the size of the upper area that could house around 60 plus guests. I conducted a site visit of the venue and was greeted by the hostess station and spoke with the manager Archie. He gave me a walkthrough of the space and after a few phone calls back and forth, and a secured reservation, we arrived on Saturday evening for our event. The cold outside had us huddling around the bar, while more guests arrived, but the bartender had the spirits flowing to get our party started. I highly recommend the strawberry virgin mojito. When about 15 guests were in the bar area, the hostess led us to our area, where the menus were laid out, candles were lit and the lights were dimmed to set the mood. The Jazz music in the background was lowered just enough for light conversations among friends. The staff was SPECTACULAR and I'd like to highlight the teamwork and leadership of Marlysa, Alicia, Nya and Christopher. They were ready and willing to assist our larger party and had drinks out within minutes. Because of the interstate construction, many of our party goers were running behind, so we ordered chips for the tables. While I understand inflation, we all agreed that $15 for two handful of chips was a bit much, but enjoyed the fresh tomato salsa and queso. The guests started arriving and the food orders were received in a quick and orderly fashion. Our wait staff stayed near and ensured all guests were taken care of and the night was running smoothly. My boyfriend and I ordered the New York Steak and Macaroni and Cheese, as well as, the Barbecue Baby Back Ribs with the orzo and wild rice and fries. While orders came out correctly, my fries were cold, and I did get a few complaints about inaccurate temperatures on the steaks. ( menu stated they would try to cook as close to customer's request) We knew that a larger party would be a bit hard and I applaud the chefs in the kitchen for putting out the orders accurately and quickly. I had to move the star power down one because of the comments about the food, but all in all, I surveyed laughter, an attentive staff and food disappearing off of plates. My ribs were delicious and I was pleased with my sides and my babe enjoyed his meal. All in all, we had a terrific event. The restaurant was packed and still pumped out food to new arriving guests. Very welcoming and helpful staff. Our waitress was so sweet and helpful in explaining items on the menu (Jacque). She recommended a yummy drink as well that I loved (Whale Flower). I got the Tuscan Steak, very flavorful and tender. It's a big portion of food for a petite person such as myself so keep that in mind. My husband got the NY Strip and Mac n Cheese. He had no complaints, says the mac n cheese was delicious. The Tuna Stack is my favorite, i ate most of it by myself & finished it off with the spoon (don't judge me) lol. Ambiance, love the open space here, the tables aren't so close together and the vibe in here is relaxed. I Love the open windows, got a nice view of the outside hills. As a surprise, a friend invited me to join her at J. Alexander's. I had previously eaten at the J. Alexander, Quarry location. Truthfully, I had not been impressed. So I wasn't expecting great things from this location. Thus, I was mightily surprised, to find their food enjoyable and excellent service. We ordered from their brunch menu and I had the Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon, breakfast potatoes, and fresh fruit. I did not care at all for the Canadian bacon and this could've been just me, but it was too fatty for my taste. I actually took it off to eat the eggs. However, the rest of the meal was pretty good. The eggs were perfectly done. The potatoes were delicious and the fruit fresh. We also shared a slice of carrot cake, which was excellent. I've now officially been here twice (adhering to my cardinal rule wherever possible); once for a dinner date and once for lunch. Although I don't remember what we had, I recall dinner with my wife having been a pretty good experience. This is definitely a good "date night" location. I remember the service being friendly and fast, the food being good, and the meal being worth the money (which is found less and less these days). I'd defined go back here for dinner. Lunch, however, was not as impressive. Service was still fast and friendly; our waiter checked on us at the right intervals. I opted for the burger, which was good, but I'm a "burger guy", and I tend to be hard to impress when it comes to my favorite. Overall, you definitely get your money's worth. This reception desk is run by a group of immature teenyboppers who have no social skills. I won't even try to explain that conversation. I just said "forget I even asked". The food. Ugh. I had the ribs with some godawful sour tasting sauce. It tasted sour and ruined the ribs. The Mac and cheese was okay at first but the deeper I got in the dish the dish was flat and bland. The fries were the highlight of the meal. My wife had pork tenderloin. It was cold uncooked and the glaze was too sweet. The mashed potatoes were cold. Probably leftovers. The deserts were so-so. Had better form H-E-B. Never returning to this poor facsimile of a restaurant. It's a fast food chain described as a restaurant. Not recommending it to anyone. The kitchen and management should be embarrassed. One is one star too many. We used to go to the one in Alamo Heights and were very pleased to see that another had opened closer to us. We've been back four times and have enjoyed the huge, cold salads, both burgers and more. The staff is always polite and attentive. The single (large) burger is one of the two best in San Antonio and perfectly grilled with a result like your outdoor grill. The location isn't really kid-friendly unless they are a bit older as many people are having meetings during meals. The pricing is fair for what you get especially given how fresh everything is when it comes to your table. We recently tried it to go as well and the packaging was perfect and everything arrived hot or cold as it should be. This is back on our regular rotation. read more

J Alexander is one of my favorites but it was always a bit too far to drive to the quarry. Then they introduced Redlands Grill near the rim. Apparently they renamed it around September and changed it to J Alexanders. The menu is largely the same between the two restaraunt brands. My wife and I arrived on a Saturday night and the wait was about 20-30 minutes. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some fairly pricy martinis ($15 each). However they serve it with any leftover alcohol in an iced glass holder. So its a large martini and for the price i would say reasonable. The bartenders were good, friendly and attentive. For dinner I had the 16 oz prime rib, rare, and it was very good!! Highly recommend the prime rib - a 12oz is $39 and a 16oz was $42. I went with the 16oz. My wife had the salmon and got broccoli and roasted cauliflower - a nice keto meal! She enjoyed her salmon but felt it was a bit over cooked and it was a pretty small serving of salmon. The prime rib was melt in your mouth delicious paired with a lovely Malbec wine from their extensive wine list made me want to go back. Unfortunately they had a special seafood pasta today that I ordered and after a bite or two I realized the shrimp and other included seafood were RAW and it didn't even look like it touched heat at all. Ok, ok. Ok. First, I am a complete steak snob and RARELY eat a ribeye outside my home because I'm the only one who can season it the way I like with the proper doneness. The steak gods today convinced me I'm wrong. Not only were the tuna tower and spinach queso with accompanying freshly fried tortilla chips exceptional appetizers...the Essential cocktail was such a joy. The red fish, the ribeye, the prime rib, loaded baked, cheesey broccoli, and smashed potatoes were all on point. No, I didn't eat it all.....we were celebrating 2 birthdays. Y'all know that I go out to eat with the retirees from the school I worked at every month. In October, J. Alexander's was recommended as a venue for our December luncheon. I called and made a reservation without really knowing anything about the place. They said they would have to seat us at 3 booths instead of our usual large table. I went ahead and booked it, because I am not afraid to do things differently. I always send a notice out to the group with the date, venue, and a link to the menu, if there is one. While looking at the menu, I didn't see anything that appealed to me. Last night, I looked again to see if something stood out. Nothing really looked that wonderful to me, but I made a list of three possibilities. Then, I went to Yelp to see if they had any pictures. For this location, they had 291 photos of the venue, drinks, and food. Two of my choices did not look good in the pictures, leaving me with one choice that I was going to go with- like it or not. When we were led to our 3 tables, I was pretty pleased with the area. They were all close enough that we would still feel like we were with a group, regardless of which table we chose to sit at. Everybody in our group of 15 seemed to settle in happily. I ordered a dirty martini with blue cheese olives. It was $16.00, but this was a Christmas luncheon, so I decided to live it up. When it came to the table, I was surprised to see that it came with a little tiny pitcher in a bowl of ice that held a second portion of martini at a good icy temperature. In other words, you actually got two martinis. The martini was perfect. The blue cheese olives must have been made in house. They were very fresh and flavorful. I use a pre-made jar of them at home. These, today, were so much better. I guess I need to up my game. For my meal, I totally forgot about the item I had picked the night before. I asked for the Nashville Chicken sandwich with macaroni and cheese instead of the french fries. I am not a fan of skinny fries, so why bother with them? Boy did I make some great choices. That Nashville Chicken sandwich was the best one I have ever had. The breast was huge and so moist I had to look to see if it was actually thigh meat. The coating was wonderfully crispy and sensationally seasoned. The brioche bun was perfectly sweet and pillowy soft. With the slaw and ranch dressing on it, the sandwich was incredibly messy, so I broke the rules and ate it with a knife and fork. I just couldn't stop shoveling it in. It was more than delicious. The macaroni and cheese was also superior. It was really creamy and cheesy. The flavors were intense, but I couldn't pick out the cheeses it was made with. I asked Connor, our amazing server. He told me what they were, but I was in the middle of a food high and can't for the life of me remember. Speaking of Connor. He was one of those dream servers that you always hope to get when you are dining out. He was extremely polite. I have told you before how a group of retired teachers can be pretty hard on the wait staff. He took everything in stride. Even when we were all gathered around one table for our gift exchange, he politely served my carrot cake and coffee through the blockage with a smile. As far as I know from talking with everyone, there were no mistakes on anybody's order, except when one lady's salad ended up on the floor. That got cleaned up, and a new salad came out super fast. Since I mentioned the carrot cake and coffee, let me go on a little dessert rave. The carrot cake was sort of a sheet cake. It was about 8" x 8". It stood about two inches tall and was COVERED in a healthy layer of delicious icing. The cake itself was nice and warm. It reminded me more of a steamed pudding than a carrot cake. I loved it. Connor asked if anyone wanted coffee. I said I would love a cup. He brought me my own pitcher of French pressed coffee. It was so aromatic that the crowd around the table all started talking about it. It was a bold dark blend that was very robust. It was the perfect finish for a truly delightful meal. When lunch was over, Connor brought everyone their check. He explained how there was a tip added since we were a large group. I looked at the tiny amount that was on mine and added another thirty dollars. I hope everyone in our party added more. I am not kidding when I tell you what a dream server he was. In my opinion, even the most delicious food can not make up for a bad server. When you find a place like this that has great drinks, great food, and undeniably outstanding service, you leave feeling so uplifted and fulfilled that you can't wait to go back. I was right there, today. I absolutely can not wait to go back again and have a memorable dinner with my wife. We'll make it happen very near in the future! read more
