It's great to sit in a restaurant after what's going on in the world. The menu's choices are nice. I was expecting to see the beet salad, but it wasn't there. That's my favorite. Apparently it's only a summer salad? Well, we ate there on Halloween and I had the polenta with shrimp. There is bbq brisket in this dish. Very smoky flavor. I wanted a semi vegetarian dish but this wasn't it. It didn't taste bad, but not what I was expected. The polenta was chunky with fresh corn bits. The shrimp are big and cooked perfectly. The gravy is tasty. As always the cocktails are excellent.I recommend a visit when you're in the area. read more

We heard good things about Rye and booked reservations for dinner on 3/4/22. I want to first say that the food and drinks were very good. The ambiance was terrific. The service provided by the ancillary staff was also very good. But the service provided by our main server, Carrie E., was very poor. Her attitude toward my family was condescending and quite frankly rude. My spouse and I had a late lunch, and wanted to split a steak and potato, after which the attitude from Carrie E turned south. It was apparent that she disapproved of our choice to split dinner (which we still couldn't finish--we needed a to-go box). The poor attitude continued thru our entire experience. Even though we will return in the future, we will make sure to not sit in Carrie's section. I don't write many reviews, but as a franchisee/owner of a 60 location chain, I wanted to let Rye know about our experience. I hope they use this review as a training experience for Carrie. Times are tough with the COVID-19 pandemic business staffing, and we all have to put up with employee behaviors just to keep up with customer demand. But in normal times, I would have initiated disciplinary action with a staff member like this one. Customers deserve much better than what we received. read more

Expensive for nothing more than the sake of being expensive. Inattentive staff, bland or flat out bad food, all for $35+ a head. And to be clear, I've got no problem spending g $100 a head for good food, but this place isn't it. Friday night we went for a birthday celebration with some friends. We'd been before (and we're unimpressed that time), but went along anyway. Ordered the "famous" fried chicken...dry and over cooked. When I did get a tender piece, it wasn't much better than any fast food fried chicken as far as flavor. Must be famous for being the same, yet 6 times as expensive. Ordered the cheesy creamed corn as a side (for $9, yikes) and what I got was water with pieces of corn and a small amount of cheese. Wife ordered the shrimp and grits which were lumpy, over sauced, and the shrimp was so beyond over cooked they were tasteless rubber. The kicker is that the shrimp and grits come with some type of pulled pork in them. One of the other people at our table asked if it could be on the side or left out if the dish entirely. The waiter basically told her No, it can't be removed. She ordered it anyway, suffered through it when it came. After, the waiter asked "how was the pork in the shrimp and grits" she responded "not good. I wish it could've been left out, but now I know". His response "well I like it. And the chef is really picky about what they make so we don't really modify anything." We'll, for $35 a plate, I think you need a little for flexibility. Or a better chef. The only reason it gets 2 stars instead of one is they have a fantastic drink menu and dessert was good. I don't understand the reputation that this is one of the finer restaurants in the KC area. It's overpriced, and quality pales in comparison to several places within a stones throw of the Leawood location. Maybe go for happy hour, but save your money and go elsewhere for food. read more

I was in town for the week and I'm so glad my friends suggested to have dinner at Rye. Such good food, good hand-crafted drinks, cozy atmosphere. Has a rustic farm-to-table sort of feel. What we ordered: - Pork rinds - because they're fun to snack on! - Deviled eggs - also fun to snack on! - Fried chicken - So freaking good. I ordered the 3 piece plate and the pieces were huge! - Shrimp and grits - Drool. Grits were full of flavor - Mac & cheese with crispy bacon - it was mmm mmm good - Cottage chips - crispy and perfect - Banana cream pie - It was light, had a subtle sweetness, YUM Service was friendly. The food was very good as always but the service was awful and the patio was not clean. Like so dirty I won't go back. My wine glass arrived without the wine, not a big deal, but the shade of lipstick on the rim of glass was not my color. Yes, in the age of Covid dirty tableware is even more disgusting. The gazpacho was very good but hard to eat with fork and had difficult time getting server to provide a spoon. Same experience for the rest of our table. Some of their food is fantastic: world-class fried chicken and unequalled pies. Seriously the banana cream pie is one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. But. This stuff is pricey and some of it is just ok. The cheese plate, at like $24, is embarrassingly meager. $11 for a very ordinary baked potato is not justified. The cauliflower, also $11, was undercooked and the brie on top wasn't even melted. In the past I've received undercooked Brussels sprouts, too. (Someone needs to talk to the kitchen about roasting & blistering the vegetables!) I don't mind paying a fair price and I understand that good food and service should be expensive. But sometimes Rye isn't measuring up. read more

This place is a lot of fun! Consistently good food and great drinks. First of all, Pressley (I hope I got his name right) is an outstanding bartender/server. We go to the bar when we go to Rye, and when we have Pressley as bartender, he treats us ridiculously well. Not that the other staff aren't great, because they really are as well. Very friendly, make you feel welcome. But Pressley is completely on his game all the time. This guy checks on you at exactly the right times, he's fun to talk to but he won't monopolize your conversation. He's got a great personality, he's got excellent menu knowledge, and is one of our top KC mixologists if not THE top. He definitely makes great drinks! Man, I had a Ramos Gin Fizz one time that was out of this world. And my wife had an Old Fashoned that required a gluten-free bourbon and he found one (Hudson Bay) and just absolutely nailed it, great drink. I had a French Blonde (Gin (from the excellent Tom's Town Distilllery), St. Germain, grapefruit juice, and Cocchi Americano). And it's not like he labored meticulously and took forever. He just knows what he's doing. Very impressive! We also got a chance to talk briefly to the manager, who was very pleasant and accommodating, and one of the other bartenders, another guy who seems to know just what he's doing and provides EXCELLENT service. I have to tell you, there is no snootiness in this establishment. Just pleasant friendly staff. Now, the food here is just consistently excellent. The menu is pretty extensive. The deviled eggs are excellent. The buffalo wings are also great. My wife doesn't even normally like buffalo wings but she really likes Rye's. And they come with shaved-thin slices of carrots and vegetables that complement the spiciness of the wings very well. The fried porks skins are also an excellent starter. They come out sizzling, but not too hot to eat. Pressley recommended some lime and sriracha to dip them in and he was right, that was a great choice. Even without the sriracha and just the lime they're great. VERY good flavor, just the right amount of spice, light and fluffy. They go down more easily and gently than potato chips and are much tastier. Another thing my wife is not normally a huge fan of is barbecue, but she loves the pulled pork sandwich here at Rye and I have to admit, it's great. Me, I just can't get off the burger. Two very tasty patties, true pickles (yes, pickled cucumbers that are not overly vinegary), sweet onions, cheese melted perfectly, delicious toasted bun. I've always been a huge fan of the steak fries here, but they switched them out for regular fries. Not to worry, once again a 10 out of 10. They are addictive. Fries that actually taste like potato, but somehow still crispy! A lot of fries, you get the crispiness but you lose the potato flavor. Not these. They are perfect! The fried chicken is absolutely great here! That's what I got last night, because I wanted to try something other than the burger. It is just incredibly flavorful, moist, cooked to the perfect temperature, and crispy with just the right amount of breading. Just terrific! My wife had the pork chop last night and she loved it, and I had a taste as well and agree, just delicious. On top of that, they cooked it to the perfect temperature. She asked for medium well and they nailed medium well. And the apples complemented the chop very nicely. Don't forget the awesome desserts. I will indeed try the strawberry rhubarb pie one day, I swear. It's just so hard to turn down the banana cream pie. Now, the best banana cream pie I've ever had was at Reserve at The Ambassador, but this is darn close. Great whipped cream, great banana flavor, just firm enough in consistency, and a nice flavorful crust that doesn't break your fork when you try to cut it. This place just rocks. read more

I ordered the Rye breakfast: Potato hash brown was way overcooked I was not even able to eat the whole thing because it was so hard, sausage gravy tasted like raw flour, special donut was churros and they lacked flavor and seemed overcooked as well. Overall disappointing for an expensive brunch. My last two experiences at Rye have not been good so I will not be returning. We were seated in the corner of a back room which was less than desirable when their normal atmosphere is very cozy. Temperature in the restaurant was above average and humid even though it was a cooler rainy day outside. Bar service was slow and reachers was almost nonexistent. This is definately a restaurant I can take my out of town family to. Came in today with my bf for KCRW, but unfortunately I've been suffering a cold/flu. :( I am basing this Yelp review on what he said, he actually gave the rating! I am going off by the little I was able to taste. 1. Baked Potato Soup - I thought this was really tasty. I was scared about how heavy and dense my stomach would feel, after not eating very much the last few days. Surprisingly this did not feel so heavy. The layers of flavor in the soup really make this taste like a real baked potato! It also does help that I've been craving a baked potato this whole week. :P 2. Fried Chicken - Nice and crispy, tender and juicy! The gravy to the mashed potatoes was delish, although the potatoes themselves taste good enough to eat on their own! My bf said the chicken was very much something you'd eat at home..and I really like that. You get a thigh and a breast. 3. Dutch Apple Pie - Upon looking at the menu I noticed that each slice of pie is like $8...so I was really glad I had the option to try it as part of KCRW for the price...I anticipated the arrival of the pie, just to hope its as good as its price..and it was! What is better than pie? Three words: Pie Happy Hour!! Came here for half price pie and it was delicious. They had a lot of seasonal options - pumpkin, apple and more! I got the apple pie which was made with thinly sliced apples with a caramel drizzle. It came out cold which I didn't love. Our waiter said it comes out cold unless requested to be warm - definitely ask for it to be warmed up! I have been to the plaza location and look forward to coming back here for dinner and more pie! read more

Rye is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in KC. It is the perfect spot for family visiting, date night, or dinner with friends. My sister and I go often and I wish I could choose my favorite item on the menu but It is all so good. I constantly change what I order because I want a bit of everything. The fried chicken is perfect to share. The mac and cheese is a definite must. The salmon never disappoints. The burnt ends started is great to share to order all to yourself. I just looked up restaurants on Apple Maps and found this place. It did not disappoint. The staff was extremely friendly and personable! The beer and wine selection was very wide and really quite nice! I ordered a house salad and their burger. Both were very fresh, and easily exceeded my expectations. I fully believe that any burger worth its salt should never need any condiment. This burger was good enough to stand on its own. I'll definitely come back here again. read more

We have been loyal customers of Rye Brunch for years.... The past two times visiting, the service has been awful. Drinks take forever, requests feel like a burden (like salt and pepper). I was seated at a table right in the path from the kitchen to the patio, which meant every server ran past our table, there was screaming from the servers' station to the kitchen, and vice versa. I had to ask 3 times for cream for coffee. On our most recent visit, we were the first people in the building. Our server was woefully unprepared with the daily pastries and omelette. So unfortunate. Rye rye rye, you lovely hidden gem you. After finishing up a dance stint at Allegro Ballroom we decided to find a brunch place and Rye popped right up being only 6 minutes away. So why not! The complex that holds Rye also includes Room 39, which if you haven't tried yet you definitely should(another great brunch place). Decor: very rustic and all the waiters wear plaid shirts which is a cute gimmick Drinks: I've tried the pamplemousse and the bees knees both of which did not disappoint. I actually felt a little tipsy following the bees knees which I attribute to the Beefeater Gin's ability to make anyone's knees weakCoffee is also from the Roasterie which is a coffee place I love so that is also a bonus! Food: I had the burnt end hash which I wasn't the biggest fan of. I don't quite like huge pieces of meat in my breakfast so I'll pass on that... also found out that the burnt ends were from Joes so that makes sense since that's my least favorite BBQ joint. The Cuban and the Spicy chicken sandwich were both grade A choices and you cannot go wrong the the Rye Breakfast. I have been here twice, and both times was more than impressed. Such a great little setting. Intimate, but not overly so. Clean, interesting decor. First things first -- drinks. I had an OAXACAN Autumn on my first visit -- so good and such a unique flavor. The second visit I wanted to get a little outside of my comfort zone so went with an Old Square, which was anything but -- so much yum that I had to have a second! The food: My first visit included the pickled vegetables as a "snack" -- they were good. Fresh, and not too heavy. Not quite as "pickled" as I expected, but then I've not had FRESH pickled veggies before, so not sure I would know any better. As an entree, I had the Roasted South Carolina Quail. I substituted out the stuffing for the Roasted Spaghetti Squash. Growing up in SW Kansas, I've had my share of quail, but definitely never served like this! The presentation was beautiful, and the flavor was fantastic. My second visit included the beef tartar as an appetizer. I don't have tartar very often, but it's a favorite of my friends so we went for it. She's more of a tartar regular and noted that it was the best she had ever eaten. I thought it was quite good also! I also enjoyed a house salad. MORE than I expected. The ingredients were so fresh. I'm not normally a crouton girl and typically want the dressing on the side, but I decided to take it as it came and wasn't disappointed. LOVE the dressing -- and it's light, so you don't feel like you've bathed in it. For my entree, I chose the Pan Roasted Scotch Salmon. It was cooked perfectly, though I didn't taste the lemon dressing, so might've been slightly disappointed with that. For dessert on both visits, we went with the Chili Chocolate Cake with Cinnamon Ice Cream. So yummy! I'm anxious to try some of the other desserts, but this one is so incredibly unique that I can't help but keep wanting to have it again. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the wait staff. On both visits, the service was spot on, though I will say that this last time, Missy, hit it out of the park. My wife and I each ordered the 3-piece chicken dinner with mashed potatoes side. We were very surprised when our dinner was served almost immediately - definitely not cooked to order. The potatoes where cold which we pointed out to our server when we finally got their attention. The server had to request a new order of potatoes TWICE before they were brought to our table. In the meantime I tried the chicken. I noticed the breading on the pieces was definitely not classically golden brown but very dark to black. The skin on the breast and thigh could not be cut easily with a knife and had a tough chew. The server did not check back with us (after the potato problem) to see if I would like a second martini or to ask if things were acceptable. It took quite a while to get the tab paid as well. It was very loud at 6:30pm. There does not seem to be anything in design or materials of the dining room to dampen the noise of a busy restaurant. That alone is not a deal breaker - unless the food and service is also subpar. read more

We visited Rye for a friends birthday this past weekend and had an absolutely wonderful food and service experience. However, we quickly noticed how hot the restaurant was and after inquiring, we were made aware that the A/C has not been working for quite some time. We were very uncomfortable the majority of our time there due to the high temperatures, and it was evident that other customers and the staff were too. So to hear the staff has been working through these conditions most of the summer is horrific. Shame on the owners, for not taking care of their staff at this location. We were so thankful for how well our server took care of us even though they were struggling through the heat. Please help spread the word that something must be done for the wonderful Rye Leawood team that has had enough of these awful working conditions. read more

I'm in love! I'm in love and I don't care who hears it! I'm in love I'm in love I'm in love! Rye, I love you baby. I have been just itching to get to this place since before it even opened. I am a bit fan of Chef Colby (though who isn't these days?) and I was intrigued by the news of a comfort food concept. Plus, an original concept for a restaurant in Mission Farms? It's about damn time - and yes, I am pretending that Lakeside Tavern never existed, which is something I think we all should do. However, because I am a person that likes a drink or three with dinner, we hadn't made it out on the 100 block south journey to try it out. Then a brunch opportunity presented itself, and I was there! Let me tell you this: brunch at Rye may very well be one of the best in the city. Our entire table was just in love with the experience from the moment we sat down to when we finally got up to leave. A lot of people made this happen, so thank you to all of them. I opted to eat the eggs benedict, which should be a surprise to nobody. The eggs were perfectly poached, and the hollandaise sauce was some of the best I'd ever had. It was rich, smooth and had the perfect amount of lemon to give it a citric kick. The English muffins were perfect and swapping out Canadian Bacon for country ham is a nice little twist that I think made the meal. Even more, the small salad that came on the side was perfect, with fresh and flavorful greens, a touch of radish and a dressing that I really enjoyed yet now cannot recall. Finally, a few house fries that were a perfect portion size for not feeling like a glutton, were perfectly crispy and went incredibly well with their table-side homemade hot sauce. The husband ordered their special omelette, which included pulled pork, kale and fontina. It came with the same salad and chips, and he was in agreement with all of my opinions (as any good husband should be!) We both cleaned our plates. Drink options were plentiful. Even though I'm totally over the "bacon is the best thing ever" train, I opted for a bacon bloody mary that was perfectly spicy and just a touch thick, which I enjoyed. He had the Bee's Knees, which I know has honey but beyond that I can't recall. He dug it. They had a number of additional brunch drink options that all looked tasty, but I knew I had to drive 100 blocks north, so one was my limit. But the true icing on the cake? Our service. We were watched over by a wonderful server who goes by Houston. Man, if I was still managing restaurants I would have tried to poach her in a heartbeat. She didn't hover, but when we interacted she was helpful (lots of allergies at our table), knowledgeable and VERY funny. Plus as a water chugger, she made sure that my glass stayed full. I can only hope that every other server at Rye is as awesome as her. Whoever does their hiring is doing a very good job. I still need to get here for dinner, or at least back again for brunch so that I can try the fried chicken. There are in fact so many things that I want to try here that it makes me sad how far away Rye is from my neck of the woods. Our reservation was made for 6pm for five. Later we found that an additional friend would be joining us, so I called and changed the reservation to six. My request was made with a smile that could be heard over the phone. I thought this was professional and felt that it gave me a very good impression of what was to come. I called the day of dinner to confirm that the restaurant accepted American Express. I had recently had a situation where Amex was not accepted. It freaked me out (Im phobic about my card being declined) and did not what that awkward situation to be relived in front of our friends. "Hello! I was just wanting to know if you take American Express." "What?" "Do you accept American Express." "Do we take what?" "The American Express Card. Do you take it?" "Oh. I think so. Let me double check on that... Sir, are you still there?" "Uh huh." "Yes, we do take that." I was happy they would take my preferred form of payment but a little put off by the contrast in service I received thus far. Regardless, I was still very excited to enjoy dinner here . We arrived at exactly six pm and were taken to our very comfortable booth. A Delicious basket of warm bread was brought to the table. We were also visited by another member of the wait staff who spent some time visiting with my daughter. This place doesn't have a kids menu or booster seats (that we were offered) but this simple gesture made me feel as though we were really welcome with our three year old. The cocktail that got my attention consisted of gin, lemon honey syrup and sparkling wine. It sounded deliciously frou frou so I asked it it was in a girly glass. I suppose I should have kept that question to myself... "It comes in a champagne flute. It should go well with the little alligator on your glasses and on your shirt." I gave my signature "are you fucking crazy talking to me like that?" look. "It is girly and it comes in a classy glass! but it's really delicious!" I was advised. I laughed a little and said, "sounds great! I'l have one!" I'm not exactly easily offended and I'm not the kind of person who is always on guard (my friends make fun of me all the time- I swear!) But I do have a keen sense of sarcasm, smug behavior and fuckery. This set off my radar, but I let it slide. Later my friend would request a recommendation and while a lot was said, no recommendations were provided. I spent the last three years traveling across the country and eating really good on my expense account. I used to have good steak about four times a week. Not bullshit Applebee's steak, but really good beefy perfection. Let's just say that I know and love steak. My vintage USDA choice 14 day dry aged ribeye was the steak that every carnivore fantasizes for. Just thinking about this steak makes me want to go take a cold shower. It was truly amazing. Juicy and flavorful, this steak was cooked to perfection. I have never had a better steak made out side of my kitchen locally. Our server's attitude changed and her tone got a little smug when she was asked to box up the chicken and the rest of the sides. I'm sorry if its tacky. I may be from 9th and Van Brunt and low budget to some people but when is it cool to waste food? And when is it okay to waste 1/2 of a $44 steak? Box it up, boo! That's daddy's lunch. Our leftovers were packed up with care, but labeled wrong. The check came quickly and my friend and I had a little tiff about who would pay. I won the argument and took care of dinner. While we were leaving my home girl asked if our server would take a picture. Coming from foodservice I know how much servers hate this. But since I had just left her and her smug attitude a $30 tip- best believe we would be turning this joint into a portrait studio. Overall, the food was 100% legit! I mean stupid-ridiculously good! My steak was sickeningly delicious! The chicken was crisp crunchy tasty goodness. And my pregnant wife drops her head and says sadly, "I should have asked for some of that gravy to take home. The baby inside me wants more of that gravy." Everything was seasoned so well that I not once looked for the salt or pepper. My girly Lacoste drink was very potent and the perfect summer cocktail - even if it did come with a snarky sense of smugness that still makes my lip curl. A majority of the staff that we had interactions with where very friendly and it was obvious they take great pride in their restaurant Our server however left a little something to be desired. The Mission Farms development has held two long-term stalwart restaurant tenants - Blanc and Blue Koi, and some time after added Ted Habiger's Room 39 (which Ted himself has said should be called Room 107, but that's another story for another time). The back area of Mission Farms where Rye is has been several concepts over the years and has been a sad revolving door. I believe that revolving door will stop swinging now. I am absolutely 1000% pleased with the concept that Megan, Colby, and Jeremy have been working on so hard for years. People asked me after I visited, "So?" I replied, "Fried chicken, comfort food, class, great drinks, warm woods." "Oh, fried chicken, that's not going to last," they pooh-poohed. I hesitated to respond because I knew I had several biases: 1. I'm a huge fried chicken fan and Rye's is the best restaurant-style in town. I've had the others and they aren't even worth mentioning on this same page. But I'm always open to hearing about your favorite place. 2. I've been a frequent visitor to Bluestem - both the dining room and lounge - and I know the care that the staff put in there and have never had a bad experience. Why would it be any different here? 3. There's a large number of supporters of Bluestem who have made the drive north of 75th Street plenty of time. We have a shorter drive and easier parking here so we have some personal investment :-) Oh, so you want to hear about the food? Butternut squash soup - YES Hanger steak (copy of the standby favorite at Bluestem) - GREAT Fried chicken - WONDERFUL especially with some of the house-made hot sauce lemon pie - LOVELY As a teaser - Jeremy shared that a long-term goal (within the next 6 months) is to take the chef's tables/seats that face into the kitchen into an experience where you will just be fed stuff that the crew will make right in front of you.
