We were in & out in an hour. Atmosphere.... This place is loud. For the high per plate cost, we expected somewhere a little more upscale. Drinks... Rose sangria was ok, nothing to write home about. Food... Fried cheese curds & ranch were great. Trout & green beans were really outstanding. Hangar steak was cooked perfectly but had zero seasoning. Fries were maybe the highlight. Would we go back? I recently had brunch at Rye in Leawood, midway through eating the eggs found a piece of hair. Notified the staff, no real apology or recognition other than offering more eggs. After finding hair in food you lose a an appetite for eggs at that moment. I don't feel like it was taken seriously or the manager even took responsibility to make it better. Late brunch with family and friends on a Sunday before heading home after a weekend in KC. Cool vibe and atmosphere. Definitely got the farmhouse aesthetic. Food was tasty and drinks looked good (I was driving so didn't partake). Sizable portions snd everything came out hot and flavorful. If one shortfall on the food, the spice could've been taken up one notch on the spicy chicken sandwich, but it still gave a nice jolt to my tastebuds. Downside was service time. While it was quick to order drinks and meals, we waited for what felt like 25-30 minutes for our tab after our table was bussed. Probably wouldn't have been as much of a deal if we were wanting to hang out, but not with a three-hour drive ahead of us. Overall, 4/5. read more

Great place to stop by for a couple of happy hour drinks or just to enjoy the patio, or maybe some their famous "Fried Chicken". Came here for a large group business meeting. The staff was very attentive. They do feature "Rye" based beverages. I like the fact that they also had some premium and somewhat 'hard to find' liquors and whiskeys. Coupled with their vast selection of craft beer on tap and in bottles, the setting was primed for a nice business event. I ordered the Shrimp n Grits while several others ordered the fried chicken. Service was excellent. While I picked up the group tab for over 8 people, they didn't add a service charge automatically. I made sure they were well taken care of. Not easy to find, though. Fortunately I went to the back parking lot and found the "Rye" van and assumed that's where they were. Great atmosphere, great service and excellent food. read more

I only come here occasionally. I love the ambiance, casual yet you feel like you're "out to dinner". It seems as though it's the luck of the draw, it's not consistent with good food. Again- ambiance, great, a fancy drink called something Bird- my husband loved!!! We ordered- Fried chicken Filet Chicken & dumplings Caesar Salad Apps- Whipped goat cheese Wings Along with dessert. Whipped goat cheese app- beyond good- goat cheese is fantastic. Wings just ok. At dinner fried chicken was ok, not worth the price, similar to fast food fried chicken. The filet- so good. Mashed potatoes beyond good. Chicken & dumplings- ick I think they ran out and whipped some up. Carrots were very hard- not cooked much. Entree was warmish. Dumplings barely warm. It just wasn't anything fantastic. I didn't finish because I was sick of not being able to cut the carrots. We spent $480 for 6 people. I expected it to be so much better for the price. Service was fair. Timing of food was a little off- waiter very good at filling drinks. The last time I was here for lunch much better. The plaza Rye brunch was awesome. I've been to Rye Leawood several times. It is often one of our "go-to" restaurants. We love their cocktails and the service was always good. However in the past few weeks we have been to Rye Leawood twice and each time was disappointing with respect to the service. They have fallen significantly with respect to service from their Plaza counterpart. Last night a group of 10 of us - all medical professionals and our significant others - came to Rye to enjoy some cocktails and small plates on the patio. The patio was relatively open so our waiter Jeff seated us outside. However every time we asked for something or tried to order we felt like we were inconveniencing him. One member of our party ordered 3 bottles of wine and on her last order she asked for 7 or 8 wine glasses but we were given 4 and the entire bottle was poured into 4 glasses filled to the brim. Who does that? One in our party asked for an appetizer menu but was told they don't have one. Or "can we see the whisky or spirit list?" To which "it's over there." But it wasn't there thrown in the sprawl of menus he had left for us. Most of the wait staff we encountered that night gave off the vibe that we were inconveniencing them. This was felt by all 10 members of the party. Last time we come to Rye and that's sad because we are frequent customers spending over $3-500 a night there . You'd think in the time of economic hardship - restaurant owners would be pushing for service excellence - to draw and keep loyal customers! The sad part is we are a pretty generous group and usually tip 30, sometimes 40% when our servers are nice and helpful - especially given the times as we are lucky and have continued to get paid. I just wanted to write a quick Rye update since I've been here another three or four times. Holy cow. I absolutely love everything about this place. The interior is spacious, well decorated and full of midwest pride. There is a outdoor patio that looks perfect on the warm days. Food wise, you nearly can't go wrong. I'll dedicate this review to the brunch; we had made-to-order apple fritters, and the Rye breakfast with some black coffee (via the Roasterie). Everything was perfectly simple and flavorful, one of my favorite breakfasts in the KC area. Service is always good, and I'm running out of superlatives to explain this spot. My only wish? Open another location somewhere in an urban stretch. I would think a location along the new streetcar line would be awesome so that out-of-towners and urbanites could get more acquainted. read more

Every time we come to Rye in Mission Farms,we have a great experience. We dined on Saturday night and this time was no exception. The atmosphere is always so fun! We typically grab drinks at the bar and chat with Andy or Michael before dinner. The old square is to die for! The chefs take pride in their steak program and I can see why! I was told the steaks are locally raised,which is very cool! My filet was spot on, medium. You can't leave without a slice of lemon meringue. We paired that with the espresso martini. Lovely evening as always, glad Rye has become our go to dinner spot. read more

This is not what it started out to be, it was my absolute favorite. The last few times we have been in the hosts are not friendly at all. The food is inconsistent, and the menu doesn't change other than the prices increasing substantially and the removal of the very fun featured desserts and sundaes that used to be changed out regularly. I was looking forward to eating here at Rye with my fellow KC Foodies for pretty much the whole week. The parking was pretty much full but I managed to find a spot. We had about a total of 14 people so we actually had the back private room for our large party. The bar in front was great to grab a drink while you waited for someone or your party. The main dining area was relatively bright; however, the back private room was pretty dim but that was fine to me. Rye was owned by the same owners of Bluestem and that reflected in their menu as well as some of the food. One thing I noticed was the menu was a little bit different from the menu on their website, but it more or less had the same items. I was starving so I was ready to splurge on food. I ordered the Deviled Free Range Eggs with Fresh Horseradish ($4), the Smoked Brisket ($22), and the Mac & Cheese with Crispy Bacon ($7). I was looking at the Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes but our waitress said the Mac & Cheese was more popular. It took awhile before our starters came out, but I guess that was okay considering we were all talking with each other. The Deviled Free Range Eggs with Fresh Horseradish were delicious but it would've been nice if there were more. I didn't care much about the carrots and onions underneath the eggs though. Others in our group ordered starters and passed it around the table. I didn't try everything but the ones I did try were good. All of our main dishes came out soon after. The Smoked Brisket tasted great and I could taste the flavor cooked in it. The beans were good and made for a nice dipping sauce for the Smoked Brisket. I think almost every dish came with the house pickles which ran out pretty quick when we were passing it around the table. I thought all three complemented each other very nicely. I tried some Chicken Fried Steak with gravy and that was alright and so was the Shrimp and Grits. The Mac & Cheese with Crispy Bacon was one of those comfort foods and tasted pretty good but the portion was really small. It's one of those things you just have to try. There was dessert and I think almost everybody at our table was full. I didn't order any dessert but some of the desserts sounded good. The Chocolate Peppermint Layer Cake sounded good but I had to hold back. Great food at Rye so come check it out! read more

Prior to covid this was one of my favorite spots, as most of the bartenders were outstanding. I particularly appreciated that they always offered the amazing cornbread, something the servers on the patio don't do. Some great dishes I've had are shrimp & grits, lamb shank (apparently no longer available), the goat cheese and the happy hour burger. I'm told the fried chicken is award winning, but when I finally tried it recently, I found it to be among the worst fried chicken I've ever tasted. Even thinking about it now gives me a bad taste in my mouth. And the chicken was so dry, leading me to throw most of it out. The Old Square cocktail is outstanding when dining in, though I question the $50 takeout price. Yikes! As a random side note, if your wife ever has to leave Rye by ambulance, make sure to leave some time for them to run your card (and not even take off the last round of drinks you did not have a chance to enjoy before the medical emergency) before following her. read more

Great service, lovely atmosphere, easy menu, excellent quality ingredients, at a price and atmosphere you can enjoy regularly and for casual occasions. Pulled Pork Sandwich: tasty Burnt Ends: flavorful but not burnt Chicken Dumplings: lacks flavor Cottage Fries/chips: dig the ham gravy Pies: heavenly You can make a meal look real purdy, but then it needs to deliver to the tongue what it has enticed the eye with. Where's the flavor of chicken in the chicken dumplings? The ham gravy had more ham flavor than the chicken dumplings. The cole slaw on the pulled pork may as well have not existed because it didn't seem to add crunch or flavor, but the bun was mighty buttery! The pulled pork needed the sauce because it didn't seem to have much flavor on its own- thankfully those house made sauces pack a flavorful punch of vinegar, tomato, smoke, and spice. Burnt Ends are usually burned or charred to some degree, but not here. They were more like suveed in their own juices, plus a lot of extra juices full of flavor. Definitely the most flavorful meat at the table during our meal- but those looking for charred bits of coal will not find them on these juicy fatty ends. If it weren't for the pies as a saving grace, this meal may have landed in the three star category. I get the sense that these ingredients are carefully chosen from known farms, but it would be nice if names were mentioned- as at the Farmhouse and Zingermann's- even if everything on the menu can't be sourced. Perhaps I expected too much from a James Beard awarded chef's casual restaurant- but I believe there's room for improvement here in the depth of the the flavors I mentioned. Or perhaps they should only serve their signature fried chicken- which none of us ordered. I would go back if I lived in the area- just to make sure the experience wasn't a fluke- and because the food quality is excellent for the price- but maybe I'd see what the fried chicken was about instead. read more

First time trying Rye. Very disappointing. I had the pulled pork sandwich and a Caesar salad. The salad was drenched in dressing. The sandwich at first bite was mushy and I thought it was the bread. I came to realize it was fat that I was eating. I started picking through it with my fork and believe that there was about 60% fat and 40% actual meat. The meat was tough and flavorless. The homemade "pickles" were almost still cucumbers with a little vinegar added. The fries were the only thing that weren't disappointing. Our server never came back to the table to check in about anything and when she asked if I wanted a box, and I said no, I would have thought she would ask if there was something wrong with the food. I had only eaten about a quarter of it. So after paying $25, I was in need of something to eat. I DO NOT know why this place gets good reviews, and will not go back. read more

The salmon was small but excellent, my husband's fried chicken was a little dry, but the shrimp and grits my son and his wife ordered were not very good. My DIL took two bites and quit. And the caesar salads tasted like the Dole salad kits at Hen House. So we probably won't be back. It's too expensive for mediocrity. We should have gone to Nick and Jake's like we usually do. I was very hungry for Chicken and Dumplings, a little old fashioned, southern comfort food. It is surprisingly difficult to find in the KC area. I landed in Rye at Mission Farms. The good news is it's the same Rye as on the Plaza, with great fried chicken and a much nicer patio. The bartenders, especially Richard, are personable, talented and knowledgeable. The bourbons were good, better and great. The chicken and dumplings, however, were a little disappointing. The flavor was fine, the dumplings were good and what chicken there was was tender. But c & d should be thick and creamy, ladled on a plate over biscuits or mashed potatoes. This was a watery soup, like a can of chicken noodle soup. It did not scratch the itch, I'll keep looking. Main have to go to a chain like Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans. read more

We just got takeout from here for our anniversary, and I'm so glad we didn't dine in- it was a Saturday night as I went in to get our food, and the place was HOPPIN'- not exactly what you aim for in the era of COVID. I do think that six feet was enforced, but still- masks off and indoors? Still somewhat dangerous. (Only those seated had masks off- staff and walking patrons had masks on, to be clear). The outdoor patio was full too, but is probably a lot safer- the fire pits looked inviting. I liked the duck ragout. My partner loved his pork chop with apples. I liked the brussels sprouts app- it was rather vinegary, almost tasted pickled, but I enjoyed it! The pies are just as wonderful as ever- lemon meringue, and my very favorite chocolate peanut butter were the star hits! read more

I have been to Rye twice -- both for birthday dinners. Small portions, but delightful, delicate flavors.. skilled preservation of texture. Ok, been here at least 4-5 times now as I've been in town on business weekly (Sprint) Absolutely love this place!!! End-to-End its a tough place to beat for the price, atmosphere and location. Ambiance: My kinda place. Low lights, wood/tile bar, big wall of alcohol and barrels. A handful of TVs for you favorite games, cants be beat. I'll admit I typically sit at the bar however the dining room is roomy and plenty as well they also have a nice patio for when the weather is accommodating. 9/10, good love entertainment is the only thing it's missing even if it's a local guy and a guitar at the end of the bar. Food: Excellent! 10/10 Bang for the buck, can't beat it. French Onion Soup is excellent, strong salads, I've had steaks and fish dishes all top notch. Note: Monday is their "steak night". Choice of salad, steak, side and a piece of pie for like $35! I fly into town on Sunday night, our on Thursdays so you can guess where I'm at on Monday nights. Whitefish is awesome, apps are sic and find upside down pineapple cake is ridiculous. Drinks & Staff: 12 out of 10!! As mentioned I always sit at the bar. Updating to mention their phenomenal dessert!! After a 2nd (or was it 3rd visit???) we ended up finally ordering dessert at Rye and damn was it amazing. The previous time(s?) that we'd been in I'd been eyeing the Kentucky Bourbon Cake and finally caved to ordering it for us to share. I wish I hadn't - ordered to share that is! It was soooo freaking good! I wanted it all to myself!! The cake was amazingly dense and the raspberry jam went perfectly with the mousse and bourbon vanilla ice cream. I honestly this is now my new all time favorite dessert (yes even compared to the amazing desserts at Trezo). Apparently it's only a summer salad? Well, we ate there on Halloween and I had the polenta with shrimp. There is bbq brisket in this dish. Very smoky flavor. I wanted a semi vegetarian dish but this wasn't it. It didn't taste bad, but not what I was expected. The polenta was chunky with fresh corn bits. The shrimp are big and cooked perfectly. Our server, Joshua T was fantastic: honest, genuine, and funny- the perfect host to our evening. He made great recommendations and just like he said, we weren't disappointed. Since it was KC restaurant week, we each chose items from the Prix Fixe menu. I had The Rye House salad, Fried Chicken and Lemon Pie.
