Years ago this company was great, but in the last couple years they have gone downhill. I have the annual maintenance contract. Scheduled appt for 2-4 pm on Friday. I called them at 4:17 pm, they said they were running late but would be here by 6 pm. Called again at 8:10pm, they didn't know when they'd get here. Rescheduled for Tuesday at noon. They didn't show up at noon on Tuesday, so called at 12;30; said they would leave a nearby job in 10 mins and be here soon. They had not shown up by 3 pm, so called again, but only reached an answering machine. Left my number but no one called back. Tech finally showed up at 4:20 pm. Their technicians are friendly and helpful, but management is totally incompetent. They never call to tell you there will be a delay. I won't be renewing the maintenance contract. read more

I would give them a negative rating if I could. They arrived after the 2 hour window to inspect our air conditioner. They diagnosed that the fan motor was faulty without taking the fan motor/fan unit out to see if it really was the motor or just the bearings in the fan. When I called several days later they informed me the wrong part had come in and they would need to reorder. They said they would call me the next day to reschedule which they failed to do. When I called to find out what was going on they said they would check and call me right back. Again I didn't receive a call from them and called the next day. When I called they said the motor was in and they gave me another 2 hour window to come and install it. They never arrived and never called or answered their phone when I called to find out when they would arrive. Even the next day they didn't call me to apologize and schedule another time. I originally had a service appointment scheduled for June 12th between 10:00AM and 12:00PM for duct/vent cleaning and for my air handler to be inspected/maintenance. Our A/C wasn't working very well at a new property we just purchased, so we wanted it looked at and repaired as needed (this is important and will be referenced a bit later in the review). The 12th arrives, when I called right around noon (the end of our estimated service window) I was rescheduled for later in the evening with the window extended to 4:00PM and told they were running behind due to a few employees calling in sick to attend the a celebration for the Capitals winning the Stanley Cup (fine, fine I can accept that -- after all that is a huge deal). However, I was assured someone would arrive by 4. I call 4 more times that evening, checking in every half hour before the 4 o'clock window closed in, on the 4th time I'm told I'll receive a call back with an update for the technicians arrival. I wait an entire hour, no one calls back, so I call a 5th time and am told I'll receive another call back with an update... after twenty minutes (nearing 6 o'clock at this point) I call back to check in once again and I am finally told someone is available to come. Now, here's where the bit about the A/C not working properly comes in -- the technician wanted her to ask me how the A/C was currently performing (as this is a week after my original call to schedule the appointment) and I say that it is actually keeping the place cool but it is set all the way to 50 degrees to keep it at a nice flat 70 (versus the 78 it was keeping it at). She then says there is nothing that the technician will be able to do for the unit if it is cooling and that I should reschedule for the following week when the weather is warmer and not as cool, as it will help him diagnose the issue. Not to mention, the technician didn't have the truck to perform the duct/vent cleaning and she would prefer him come and do both jobs at the same time (I guess they conveniently forgot that portion of my service request). Okay, crazy day -- I'll give them another chance. With that said, I rescheduled my appointment for Thursday the 21st. Thursday rolls around, and this time I have a 2:00PM - 4:00PM service window. I call early that morning to ensure someone would actually be arriving. I mention that no one showed up the prior week and I'll be checking in periodically throughout the day to ensure a technician is coming. She apologies and tells me the reason no one showed up the prior week was due to the company having a slew of computer and phone problems (which I know isn't the case for my original servicing, since last week I was told up front that it was due to several employees calling in for the The Caps' Stanley Cup parade). But, I am once again assured someone would arrive between the 2:00PM & 4:00PM service window. I call around 2:00PM to start checking on arrival, no news yet. I call once again at 2:50PM and I am told I would receive a call back with an update for the technicians arrival. Obviously, like before, I was not called back. I waited half an hour and gave them a call back myself, with no answer, so I call six times in a row. Finally, now at the 45 minute mark past the time I was told I would receive a call, the phone is picked up and I am told "they are just finishing a job in Chantilly, they'll be heading there shortly, you're our next call". I ask for a time estimate and I am told they would arrive in 15 minutes. Well, forty minutes later, I give them another call to check in and I am told that the technician in-fact never finished the job due to an emergency repair of some sort (they were vague, and after being told earlier my appointment last week was missed due to computer/phone issues I hardly believed them) and that the technician would not be able to service me today, but I could reschedule and they would apply discounts to the service (which they already were from the last time they missed my repair - so I am not quite sure how you can keep applying service discounts at this point). All in all, S&S seems to have a poorly managed customer support line where the dispatchers can hardly keep track of the time windows for servicing. I was given excuse after excuse over the course of both appointments and most importantly, I never received a call back with updates after being told multiple times I would. Unless you are calling on the hour, you won't receive an update on the status of your appointment - and if your luck is like mine, you won't find out a technician isn't coming until the very end of the close of business. In my opinion, I would avoid S&S - there are plenty of other option in the NoVA area. read more

S&S cooling installed a new HVAC system for us some years ago and we have been their customers ever since so when our unit went out on Monday night in the midst of a heat wave, i called them first and was pleased to hear they would be out the next day (tuesday) btwn 12-2. Tuesday 2pm: no technician yet, the temp is now 85 degrees inside my house and we(my kids and i bc school is out) have been there for the past 2 hours waiting, i call and inquire about his status, was told they were behind and could she please call me back with a better estimate of when he would arrive, i said okay 3:30pm: still no call back, still no technician, it is now reading 89 degrees inside my house, i call AGAIN to inquire about the status and am abruptly informed not only are they delayed, BUT I was NEVER on their schedule in the first place!! How is this possible i ask, when i have already called 2x and was told i was on the schedule? She had no idea but then added me to the schedule officially to be seen btwn 3-5 (mind you it is already 3:30) so OK we wait a while longer 5:15pm: Still no word from them and no technician is in sight, I call AGAIN and informed we are next- the technician will be coming to us next. It is now 91 degrees inside my house 10pm: THEY NEVER SHOWED UP AND THEY NEVER CALLED TO SAY THEY WOULDN'T BE THERE or to try to reschedule apologize etc. Wednesday am: I am now on YELP looking for a new AC repair company to call read more

Same issue as the other recent reviews, 3 times they cancelled at the end or just past my appt window, first two times they said they had someone sick... yet didn't call in advance of me being home for the window and for the third visit I called 3 hours before to have them confirm they were coming (they said they were for the 1 to 4 PM window) and at 3:45 PM received a call (I wasn't surprised) to say someone else had an emergency and they were sorry, but could they reschedule... I have rescheduled my annual PM service with them FIVE times. The first two times I took off to meet them and no show ...they have made excuse after excuse. Finally I asked for my money back and you guessed.. havent gotten that either after several conversations letting me know when they were going to cut the check. Asked her when they would be here. She says today by 11am. I said you're sure? Yes! She is sure...by 11am. I ask, does BY 11am mean 11am or possibly earlier (want to be sure I'm here). I have contacted them multiple times that day and the day after and no one picked up nor returned my voice message which I have left. I've been a customer for 17 years and sadly, we will be finding a new company. We have 2 units in our home and have a maintenance contract on both. They are supposed to call me to schedule the 2x a year check and recently, have not done so. When I called to schedule, it's been difficult to get them to even come. Multiple appointments have been made, and multiple have been missed. And the missed ones require me to follow up. The technicians have always been great when they are in my home, but the administrative part has really changed. Our experience with S&S started out positively, after the joke of a company our homeowners warranty scheduled, DC Metro HVAC, failed miserably. S&S was listed by Carrier as one of their few local HVAC companies, so we gave them a call since we knew the specific parts needed. To their credit, S&S was the only one who asked for the serial numbers and determined that the parts were still under warranty through Carrier. But that's where anything remotely positive ends. Since the previous company detailed the parts needed, S&S said they would just order the parts and not even perform an initial tech call, especially since we were already without A/C for a few days. And that's where the excuses and missed appointments started. Scheduled technician never shows or calls during the magical "window". Call S&S and it's some story that current job was more complicated, but rest assured he's coming to your house next. More time goes by nothing. So we have to call them again. Well it's too late in the day now, but guaranteed you will be the first appointment tomorrow morning. Tomorrow comes, no show. No call. We call again and he's tied up on another job. How could that be when we were supposed to be the first?? Now he's coming later. No show and no call. Call back and now it's the guy had to drive his wife to the doctor. Reschedule and they offer to pay for the installation for our trouble. Scheduled and no show, no call. Call them and guess what, the parts arrived from Carrier but were broken in the box!! Imagine the chances of that. So that's a Friday, so no A/C through the weekend and we are scheduled for Monday. Plus now we are being offered a free annual service contract for our troubles. Monday no show and no calls. At this point we gave up and went with our trusted company John Nugent and Sons. Tuesday is here and still no calls from S&S. Whatever you do, just stay away from them. read more

Updated information. For the last few years my AC has been running long -- 1/2 hour or more when thermostat set at 76 and longer with a lower temperature -- but the S&S techs said there was nothing wrong and weren't concerned. I used a different HVAC company this year and he found a leak in the coil, I had very little refrigerant, and he couldn't give the compressor a full test. That leak must have been there at least last year but S&S never caught it. S&S also never noticed the filthy coil and neither offered to clean it nor told me how to do so myself. I rescind my previous 5 star rating because like many of the other recent reviews I too have been a long time customer with a service contract. Now this the third time I scheduled service, took the day off of work and no one shows up and no one calls. I call them they say they have guys out sick or other problems and can't make it out. Say they are coming later. And don't. And don't call. Call the after hours number - no answer and the voice mail is full. They are great, nice people and it hurts to write a bad review. And hurts more to drop them but that's how it has to be. read more

If I could give a zero star rating, I would. Without fail, every appointment window we are given is missed, no one calls to let you know why or when to expect the technician to arrive. On more than one occasion, no one showed up at all. If we're "lucky" enough to have the tech arrive, more often than not they are ineffective & need to return at a later time to fix what they did wrong. We've been customers for over 15 years and really haven't had any issues until recently. As of late, whenever we've scheduled an appointment, no one shows up. We've called to check on the status and are only told that 1) someone is sick, or 2) the technicians are running behind schedule and will show up later. In both instances, the technicians never showed up. We've complained about poor customer service and how calling customers ahead of time is the courteous thing to do, but nothing seems to change. They really don't understand that customers rearrange their schedules to accommodate the time they schedule so the least they could do is call ahead and keep their word by showing up even if it's at a different time. Search elsewhere for a company because this one is just not up to par. read more

I called to see if someone could come out to take a look at it, and I was told they couldn't respect the warranty, and the price would be $87 for an inspection. I have been a customer for 20 years now. I have always liked them and recommended them to others. My current heating system was installed by them a few years ago and it began making noise so I called them. They gave me a two hour window and didn't show. I called and it was another hour or more before they finally came. I was told what was wrong but that they didn't have the part and he would get back to me that day with an estimate. Two days later I still had not heard back so I called and they promised to email the estimate. Four days later and I still don't have the estimate. I guess I am being blown-off, sad since I have been a long time customer and neighbor to the original owner and have sent much business their way. read more

i really dont think they deserve 1 star, they sell you a service contract and then put you on the bottom of the list for service. i called to schedule a spring check up and they cancelled 5 times. they don't call to let you know they are not coming. When you call to find out where they are, the answer is that another customer is more important then you are; the truck is in the shop; etc. they have 1001 excuses!. they dont care about your schedule. i had to reschedule business appointments several times. i called and told them i wanted to cancel my service contract and requested my money back for the second half of the contract , but they have ignored my request. I don't know what has happened with this company in the past 2 years. They used to be very reliable and show up during scheduled appointments. The past 3 seasons they have failed to show on numerous occasions, appointments that I thought I had booked were dropped and/ or no one has called to let me know my appointment was cancelled. Other days you can't get anyone to answer the main office number. This week alone they failed to show on 3 different days. When I called the main office I was given all sorts of excuses by the same lady. "Oh, we've had trouble with our temporary help, they can't seem to book appointments correctly, we've had emergency calls," or the best was "the rain is making us late." I don't understand how the temporary help has been the issue when its the same lady answering my calls and making my appointments each time. And how come they can't bother to call when they fail to make an appointment? I can't express my level of frustration or disappointment in their lack of customer service and reliability. read more

They recently replaced a 30-year old furnace in a townhouse I manage. They were on time for all appointments - even called ahead to be sure someone would be there. They were efficient and cleaned up the mess. The office was extremely helpful as I worked between the company and the owner to be sure all things were done. The cost was very good as well. For nearly six years, we have had issues with our hot water heater, and we've hired multiple companies to inspect it, only to be told each time that it was working fine. We knew that wasn't right, because there were days that we couldn't get any hot water the entire day! Then, we thought that maybe S&S, who we've used for our air conditioning service for years with great success, might also do plumbing! Thank goodness, they did! JR took the time to listen to our concerns and spent time truly finding the problem. Unlike all of the others, he didn't dismiss our concerns, and actually stayed until he found the problem - a broken thermostat. He wasn't trying to sell us on anything, and he didn't leave when it didn't appear like anything was wrong. He stayed until he found the problem, and then thoroughly explained our options. We have used S&S Heating and Cooling personally for our home, but started out 26 years ago when my husband had his own renovation and remodeling company. They were his go to company for his business. Well last Saturday we noticed it was cold in the house and discovered our 25 year old furnace was not coming on. S&S came out and we were informed it was the mother board and relay switch that would need replacing but not recommended for a furnace that old due to the parts would be hard to obtain and the cost we decided just was not worth it limping along as we have been doing with it for the past 8 years. We had a new Goodman installed on Friday. The guys that installed it were fantastic! They were on time and very respectable hard workers. They were here for nearly 7 hours and did not even break for lunch. They explained how to program the thermostat, when to change the filter and how the warranty worked. They cleaned up their mess and will return to install the ac compressor next week or so. All in all, the price was very fair and the work has always been exceptional with them and this time was no different. I have read the reviews and I am shocked that they had any below 5 stars. I know the owner has been very ill and things got out of control, but knowing what great prices and service that they have provided us for years, we still choose to stick by them. Now that she is back, things I am sure are much better and more in control. Thank God, mother nature was in our favor this past week and kept the temps up in the 60's. Due to our own financial situation, we had to postpone the install for the week, but they wanted to make sure that we had heat when the temps dropped this weekend and worked with us to get us there. S&S is a great company. Sandy is our go to gal and we are happy to know that her Mom has come in to help while Sandy is still healing. We personally know how an illness can affect a company, but if that company up until the illness was always great to work with, compassion and patience has to play a major roll. They will get to you and the workmanship will be just as great as it always has been. We always go by the rule, that the grass is not always greener on the other side. One excuse after another it's raining my basement flooded and I can't work today. Finally on the 11th day somebody showed up and did a partial section of work then when it started to mist they packed up their truck and left. Stating that it was raining and could not finish the outdoor part of the work. This is unacceptable trust me if I can't get a piece of these people I would but, I'm posting this for my dad! My neighbor hired S&S to replace a hot water tank and air conditioning system 2 months ago. About 2 weeks ago the water heater started flooding her home and an independent contractor came to see it - apparently the flooding was caused by faulty pvc pipes and a lousy install and because their work is covered under the warranty he couldn't repair this. She has called them for the repairs (on their crappy work) - first it was - can't get there until a week from the call - then she was told to be home on a certain date (she took a leave day from work) - no tech and no calls; finally near end of day they tell him the tech had to take wife to doctor. Next scam was - he can't come out until 24 May but you'll be the first stop - she takes a day off again and nothing - after multiple phone calls where they tell her the tech is enroute (remember they tell her she's his first stop) - they tell her he's caught up across town but definitely her home is next. 3 hours later they say he's on the way and around 5PM - no, he's still on a job and now traffic is too bad. They reschedule for 25 May - promise her again that at 10AM he's her first stop - at 9:45AM she gets a call he's on his way - just has to pick up PVC pipe at Home Depot on the way. Well it's 1230 and still no tech. This company makes hundreds of excuses, has piss poor customer service and obviously can't properly do an install. STAY AWAY FROM S&S - THEY HAVE NO INTEGRITY AND THEY STINK! read more

I've worked with S&S over the past several years and was always happy...until this most recent time. I was experiencing a leak in my A/C and called them to check it out. After being late, Troy came to unplug my condensate line. First, he messed up my vertical blinds by just "pushing" them aside, instead of asking me to open them (they now have several twisted slats that can't be "untwisted"). He then repaired the issue (after calling someone to see what to do)...or so I thought. Less than a month later, I had more water leaking. I then requested JR to come out (on recommendation from a friend who said to always ask for JR). He came on time and found that my main condensate line has a hole in it somewhere and until that's fixed, I will continue to have leakage problems. He tried to repair it with sealant, but said that it wouldn't be a permanent fix. (At least he was honest about it). Here's my issue...It has cost me $185 for the first visit and then $239 for the second visit and nothing is fixed. The second visit cost I get...he diagnosed the problem and tried to fix it. But the first cost did nothing...didn't fix or diagnose the problem. So, if you use this company, PLEASE be sure to request JR...just like my friend told me to do. You'll have the problem diagnosed properly and done on time! read more

I have had their service for many years but this time around they've not been very dependable. Was scheduled for an AC inspection last week and was given a 2-hour window but they never showed up. I had to be the one to call and ask what happened only to be told that their technician was running behind and it could be another 45 minutes. The tech was in McLean so I knew it would be longer than 45 minutes. We rescheduled to today at 8:30 in the morning and I was assured the tech would be here right at 8:30 since this would be his first call. About 8:40 AM I'm informed that the tech wasn't given his orders in time this morning to know he should have been at my place at 8:30 but I was assured he was now on his way and would be at my place shortly. I asked the dispatch person where was the tech coming from and she said Herndon. Well, I live in Herndon and it's now just after 9 am. Ah, the tech just got here. Very nice guy but S&S needs to be more organized like they used to be. read more

I was supposed to do this about 3 years ago! The repair person came to fix my dryer, but looked into the washing machine, as well. That actually was in worse condition, he showed me. He then told me some steps which allowed the washing machine to last 4 more years. Highly recommend them. read more

Never written a yelp review before, wanted to find out how just to write about my experience with this company. I have had S & S inside of my home a half dozen times regarding the "new" hot water heater over the past 10 months. Heater has been leaking since installation, pilot is junk and goes out every 2 months and the sweet smell of leaking gas is prominent. This has been an ongoing experience that is typically "temp repaired" with a "you should be all set" send off. We recently replaced our 16 year old builder installed unit. We knew it was coming, but seriously, who really wants to have to fork over that amount of money for HVAC? We did our due diligence and received 3 estimates from 3 different companies. (Very nervous after watching a news story about the many unscrupulous heating & cooling companies.) Not only did S & S provide the most reasonable estimate, but they also were wonderful to work with. Jack, the owner, was extremely knowledgeable. He educated us on heating & cooling systems, without being condescending (like one of the competing companies.) Installation was scheduled for next day service, they showed up on time and the crew was done within the day, without a mess! Gave us a run through on the new system, showed us how to register for the warranty and even called us the next day to see how everything went and to thank us for the service. Not many companies of any kind do that these days. Everyone from the front desk to the installers were polite, efficient and gave us exceptional service. It's nice to know that a good honest company is out there servicing the Dulles area. Now...if we could only convince them to sell cars too! read more
