Update: Either Yelp or Mimi L took the fake review down. Good. Yelp is now investigating her account overall because she did this with other places she works for. It was noticed that she did this for The Old Plank as well, which is owned by the same company as Saba. And it's clear she did it with other places she's affiliated with. Sad.
I wasn't going to write this review until I saw the hilarious and somewhat concerning recent review by "Mimi L" which if you filter reviews from newest to oldest should be right after or shortly after mine. I'll explain that in a moment. (Spoiler: She WORKS for the company. Don't believe me? Just look at some of the "From The Business Owner" replies and you will see not only is it the same name, but the same girl in the picture!!! LOL this is a new low for what I assume to be a social media manager and not an actual owner.)
Let me start with, we have given this restaurant 3 tries at this point and each one just gets worst. We were there in their opening month when it was a slightly different concept of smaller shareable plates. The food was lackluster and there were still some kinks to work out in terms of service. "Fine" I thought, it's new..some places just need more time. Our second visit was about 4 months ago with some friends from out of town who wanted Italian. We decided to give Saba another chance, especially since we heard they had rebranded or something under new kitchen management. They had done away with the small plates and now focused on standard sized plates. Great...except the food was awful! I think their Chef isn't familiar with seasoning dishes. Much like the nervous contestants on Food Network's Chopped- the chef must panic and throw truffle oil on things to cover up lackluster dishes. We also have noticed that the owner who I think owns other places on the block is always coming around and making conversation. This would be a great thing, except he lingers. Way. Too. Long. Like dude, we get it- it's your place and you're proud and you want to make sure your customers are happy..but there's a fine line on checking on a table and actually full on engaging in a one sided conversation. Our final visit was the other night where we were half heartedly greeted by a host who I think was actually a server or bartender just filling in for the host. We could tell they were annoyed we were there- but we arrived at the very least 45 minutes before the kitchen closed and weren't going to be super slow. We know and understand how much they must want to close down after a long day..but we didn't enter with 5 minutes to spare. Service was rushed, the food was even worst than the last time, and while there was no sign of the owner, we saw a gentleman who we could tell was a manager of sorts, but he couldn't give two cents about what was going on in the restaurant.
Now on to why I even decided to put up a review. I'm not a review. I don't yelp. I just browse and try to take the reviews with a grain of salt because I know everyone's experience is different. But when I saw that this Mimi L. who clearly works for the company write a 5 star review stating "I've always encountered friendly and attentive staff" and then closes her review with the hilariously not so sly "Tip: They have 1/2 off all bottles of wine all day on Wednesdays!" I just knew I had to write this review and to call not only her but the business out.
(A) Mimi L. Is this how you conduct your social media management practices? This is against Yelp policies, and I think against all social media manager code of ethics. You should be ashamed of thinking you could get away with this and not have someone spot the fact that you are the same person listed as "Business Owner" and the person who left a 5 star review. While I still think it's sketchy- you could have at least put in your review that you work there! Oh...and I work nearby so I'm always passing by and I couldn't stop laughing when I saw YOU sitting at the bar on your laptop probably writing more fake reviews. Here's an idea- how about you stop starring at those social media pages and posting the same crap over and over, and actually create engaging content with a measurable ROI (Yes- there are ways to do it.)
(B) Saba- come on. I actually don't care if your food sucks. There's a million places I can go. I don't wish you any ill will or anything. In fact, I hope you prosper and grow and you get better food. But you need to sit down with whoever decided it was a good idea for this Mimi character to hop on yelp and write this review, and have a serious "Do you even know what you're doing" conversation. And if it was a collective decision from management...yikes. As I mentioned above, I don't do reviews. But I had to do this one based solely on this horribly shady business practice you all just did with Mimi L. aka the listed "Business Owner" on yelp. read more
