Located in Devon, this place is relatively the best for a dine in restaurant. The nahari is in my opinion the best in the area, better than Usmania. We also ordered the sheikh fry and butter chicken with their naan. The service in this place is where I believe it lacks in. By that I mean that if you do not call for a waiter then you will be left waiting yourself. A decent indo-Pak restaurant considering the competition it has on the Devon Street. Lot of options to look at when you are here in Chicago. The service was good and prompt. Ambience was good as we went in a bit late. That's an advantage with this street, some if not most restaurants are open up late until midnight. Food wasn't the greatest of quality. Naans were huge. We had chicken Boti (spicy and flavorful) and malai chicken Boti (mild but tasty) along with Bhendi Masala (mediocre) and Frontier Chicken (pretty good) and finished with Chicken Biryani (mediocre again) and malai kulfi (sweet). Considering the cleanliness and newness of the restaurant it's fair to charge a dollar more on each dish. The area has some not so well maintained restaurants and to be ok vicinity of such and be better is a great job by the management. Sabri Nihari means "patiently cooked curry"!! This should make food taste delicious but unfortunately its not the case. Restaurant is located in a busy street with lots of south asian options in the neighborhood. We were there for late lunch and almost all of the tables were occupied. They are very quick and responsive to customers' needs. I stared in the general direction of a person and he immediately come to the table. There is no one person assigned to your table either, anyone and everyone is happy to help out. We had two vegetarian and two chicken entrees. Almost all of them had low salt, which kills the flavor. If this was a health fanatic place, I can understand no salt/low salt etc. But there is plenty of edible oil floating on the curry and spices that can increase your heart rate to cause heart burn. Food was slow cooked and that is apparent when you taste it but does not taste like it should because of lack of certain spices. It is a mixed bag of things and I don't know if I am against giving it a second try but I am definitely against giving it five stars! Good luck, you might be able to enjoy it. read more

Sabri Nihari was recommended for their biryani and overall cuisine. The restaurant really stands out on Devon due to the level of service and modern interior hence the more expensive menu. I would compare this to the Phoenix/Minghin of Chinatown. We ordered the mutton biryani and frontier chicken. Out of the different kinds of biryani that I had on Devon, this was my favorite. The rice and meat were cooked perfectly. The mutton was moist and tender and was the main highlight of the dish. The frontier chicken was also good. It had all of the flavors of India but cooked in a stir fry. These are two dishes that I would definitely recommend ordering. I would come back just for the mutton biryani if I was in the area again. Due to the prices, Sabri Nihari is on the higher end for Devon. It's a place that I would recommend if interior, service, and cleanliness are all important to you. We had 4 adults and 1 child. 4 Naans - They got good naan. Chicken Charga - It was ok, but it was very dark in color like they used old oil. Have had it when it was better than today. Motton Biryani - I'm not a big fan of biryani, but it's ok. I can take it or leave it. Sabri Nihari - My favorite dish here! Love that meat and that sauce (don't think dirty). I ate here on the suggestion of a cab driver in Chicago. We started talking about food and this was his favorite restaurant. My wife and I are no strangers to Devon, we used to live a block away. We have had our share of Pak food over the years but our favorite place is long gone. For starters, we ordered vegetable pakora. Not good, it was overly fried in oil that had probably seen better days. It was served with a milky mint sauce and some other sauce we weren't able to distinguish, but it was not a chutney in spite of its color and texture. I found the pakora pretty disgusting as did my wife. Drinks, mango lassi. Really good, but it's hard to screw up a mango-yogurt shake with sugar. You can't order alcohol at this restaurant and BYO is not allowed. For entrees we ordered frontier chicken and palak paneer, along with some naan and rice. I will say they make their food spicy and it has a lot of flavor, pretty well done. I was sweating half way in and that normally doesn't happen unless the food is volcanic. I liked it. The frontier chicken was cooked very well and highly seasoned, best part of the meal. The naan and rice were also very good. One thing I hadn't expected was the oil bath the palak paneer came in. I'll post a picture. It was basically a bowl filled with oil, and a little spinach and paneer thrown in. It was not easy on the eyes. A slotted spoon would've been nice. The flavor was good but bathed in oil as it was, I just think it was kind of gross. Why 3 stars? Well, the food was pretty good all things aside. The decor was decent. The service was attentive. This is probably my worst experience ever in this restaurant..! I went with my family & we were checking the menu with pure vegetarian food. One server came to take order. We ordered food. But my brother asked " Do you guys have complementary rice ??" & the server said : " For you people we have write everything in menu card" I mean for saying this king of word what does he mean ?? We went on Saturday night at 8pm for dinner and the restaurant is packed. There were a lot of KIDS screaming and running around. We ordered beef stew, butter chicken and chicken tikka. Butter chicken has a typical curry sauce of Indian/Pakistani but not as spicy and oily. Chicken tikka is tender but a little salty. The beef stew is awful. It's like a bad piece of beef meat sitting in a goblet of thick gravy dish. Very gooey and very bad dish. Do not order it! Service is fast. Mango lasssi is good. Tips: come after 9pm, parking will be less hectic. Don't take first date here, and anyone that are not use to being around children. read more

Five stars go to my new obsession with butter chicken. Sabri, ya hit the spot! Enjoyed some really good food, while our waiter saved us from spending too much money on too much food. The chicken makhani is perfect to split between two as well as a dish of rice and garlic nan. Downfall is that it doesn't come with rice (plain rice can be purchased separately for $3). A weird complaint that I have was that the bathrooms were very sloppy. I feel like a restaurant's bathrooms really reflect their cleanliness. So step up the game on that, Sabri Nihari. Sabri was very highly recommended to me by my Indian co-worker. After many months of hearing him talk about it , I made the trek up north to shut him up. We decided to order family style so that we could all try everything. The Seekh Fry was an absurd dish. I can't believe I've lived my entire life not know it was a thing. It's essentially mashed potatoes, but rather than potatoes, they mash beef kabob. In butter. A lot of butter. The other dishes we ordered were all also very good. The butter chicken especially was rich, flavorful, and had just enough spice to hurt you (in a good way). One thing you have to do is get a lot of starch. The curry and other sauces in these dishes aren't as thick as you might expect. You will need these starches to soak up all that good sauce. The garlic naan is the strongest starch easily. Because garlic. We also just got several orders of plain rice to accompany the food. Service was slow despite it being only 10% full. Hardly got water refills and some of us were white people so the spice really got them. Had to hunt down someone to grab a check. This place made some of the best Indian/Pakistani food I've ever had. I went to Sabri Nihari with my family of 4. We had high expectations as we've passed it by so many times and have heard good stuff about it. We went on Sunday at around 4pm and were greeted and seated right away. We ordered the sabri nihari (of course, since that's the name of the restaurant) , karahi gosht and chicken makhani. The food arrived within 8-10 minutes of ordering which was sketchy since food like this usually takes minimum 20 mins to prepare - this got me thinking it was pre made and they just microwaved it ( the microwave safe dishes also gave it away). The Karahi gosht was alright, not the best not the worst. Lacked cilantro/coriander which I personally love in my Karahi gosht. Chicken makhani was probably the best dish we got. I would recommend it - but def not the best I've tried. Last but not least, the sabri nihari came in a tacky white microwaveable bowl and wasn't hot at all. I was expecting this to be their best dish since it shared the restaurant name. We asked for the bowl to be warmed up and when he brought it back we asked if it was microwaved to which he replied "by the time the naan is being made, the food gets cold" which was obviously bullshit. On top of this the restaurant itself looked worn down with torn seats. Def don't recommend Sabri Nihari. Esp not the food selections we got. You could go there and try something different but expect luke warm food. read more

The Sabri Nihari was two tennis-ball sized hunks of tender toothsome beef in a big bowl of brown gravy. I found the gravy itself a bit disconcertingly gloppy, but everything tasted great with the accompanying slivered ginger, jalapeno slices, raw onion, tomato, and lime wedges. This place is the best Pakistani food restaurant I have ever been to in the US. No matter how short my visit to Chicago is this is a must stop. This is a nice sit down with exceptional service. I came in on a Saturday morning/afternoon and was seated right away. I ordered the chicken biryani, naan, keema samosas and salty lassi. The portions are huge and come very nicely plated. The biryani was the most delicious with perfect masala and meat and rice. The keema samosas reminded me of my nanos samosas growing up and just brought a smile to my face. Excellent Indian Food Personally, Sabri Nihari is my favorite place to eat on Devon Street. As an Indian food afficianado, I recognize that Devon can actually quite often be hit-or-miss despite the general level of authenticity. Sabri though provides high quality Indian food albeit it at a moderately expensive price. One key thing to note: Chicken Tikka, which tends to be a traditional staple for people not terribly familiar with Indian food, was not of an exceptional quality here. So if you're looking to satisfy this specific craving I would recommend you go elsewhere. However, the Palak Ghosht was absolutely fantastic. The spinach sauce was creamy, delicious, and paired especially well with the bread. The restaurant also gives out a substantial amount of Naan per order at an excellent price which helps you enjoy the full value of your curry. The Mango Lassi was similarly delicious, and the bites of Masala that I managed to sneak away from my friend were of a similar quality. Overall I had an extremely pleasant at Sabri Nihari and was quite pleased with the quality of my food. Although Indian Food is not quite as good in Chicago as it is in other cities, Sabri Nihari provides an excellent surprise. Protip: Try the Biryani, its not constantly on offer but is also delicious. read more

Firstly I never write bad reviews but this place has pretty much forced me to- have eaten street food from few asian countries so have a good idea and not just having a whine. When we settled in the table cloth was dirty and the cutlery had smudge marks (unclean). Mix platter had chicken and Seekh Kebabs- Seekh kebabs and Chicken Tikka were good but the second Chicken was luke warm on the inside and didnt feel like freshly cooked. Asked for Butter chicken (Makhani Chicken) for kids -was ordered to be super mild (mentioned 3 times to be sure)- it came out to be really hot- Even more spicier than the Frontier chicken! Told the waiter who was least interested - Didnt want to know/care. After telling him a couple of times the only solution he could come up with was to offer to add some cream to it. Chicken Biryani was average- felt like plain rice had saffron/spices and chicken added to it afterwards. Maybe should have had Nihari like most people. Frontier Chicken was the only saving grace. It was the worst. I just went there for Chicago for one day trip for my interview and from all restaurant, I choose the SABARI And it was worst. The food was from last night and the even it was not heated enough. From my face, I look Chinese, although I am from Pakistan and I know URDU. When I complained for the food, the waiter was talking rubbish about me in URDU which I can clearly understand (tip for waiter and manager do not talk about someone in bad in your own language he might know your language) and I Asked MANAGER. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city of Chicago. Everything here is incredible - lots of great vegetarian and meat options. I could eat the matar paneer from here almost every day. The breads are absolutely delicious, too. The service is good and quick, even when the restaurant is fairly busy. Though sometimes, it gets crowded so be prepared to wait for a table on a weekend evening. A lot of the portions are large, so unless you're going with a group, don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach unless you're ordering to take some home with you, too. (Even the chapati and paratha are much larger than ones I've had elsewhere.) Still - save room for dessert. Great falooda! read more

Chicken biryani was a poorly made chicken pulao with below average flavors, and chicken that wasn't well cooked. Kunnah paaya was nothing memorable.
