This is long, but I hope a manager reads the issue I start to explain in the second paragraph. I think it warrants discussing with employees for the future. I do really like the Anthem Safeway. I appreciate how their inventory is always pulled forward on the shelves, so I don't have to do bend-and-squats to see what's left of a certain item. I like that it has a great selection without being the size of a football field, so I can run in and pick up a few items without it taking the better part of an hour. I find the produce department always well-stocked and fresh. And the help in the seafood department is outstanding--no matter who waits on me, they're willing to make sure I get exactly what I want in the weight I need. BUT, today I was shocked at something that happened while I was in the self-checkout line. It was busy in the store and all the lines were full of people waiting. No big deal--after work/before dinner time is usually busy. I was waiting in self checkout; two people were in front of me, and other people were starting to line up behind me. But rather than block the main aisle, the people "behind" me were lining up on either side, making a "T." They were keeping track of who was next, and we'd even chat a bit about how busy it was. Then a young woman, talking on her cell phone, came and stood behind me. The older gentleman on one side of the "T" very nicely explained to the young woman that he was behind me and that the line was formed on both sides. It was obvious to me that he was being nice, thinking she didn't notice how the line was forming because she was so engrossed in her call, and just didn't want her waiting, losing her potential spot in the line. This woman--I have no other way to explain this--literally "went off" on this man. She was screaming at him telling him to mind his own business, that she can stand wherever she wants, and he's lucky this wasn't two years ago because then she'd really be "up in his face" and he'd really blah blah blah. She was dropping the "F" bomb right and left. Everybody heard her; you couldn't NOT hear her! Everyone in self checkout was trying to ignore; the 8-10 people in line at the service counter were staring; and the poor gentleman didn't know what to do. I felt bad, but I didn't want to say anything to further agitate the woman. I wouldn't normally take to Yelp discuss my concerns with Safeway, but the service desk was super busy with a very long line. So I tried calling the store three times once I got home and could not get through. (A couple of times, after the call processing went through all the numbers for me to dial for different departments, no matter how many times I hit "8," it would say it didn't get my response and then revert back to the beginning!) It was, at the least, disconcerting to have a woman standing behind me screaming profanities while I was checking out. At the most, quite frankly, it was a bit scary. I believe an employee should have immediate summoned a manager to remedy the situation or ask the woman to leave. read more

The handicap carts definitely need an overhaul. They are super slow, constantly have problems and they are parked so close to each other that a handicap person can't possibly get it one of the carts unless it's the one on the end. It's hard enough needing one of those carts but making it that much more difficult. Makes me go shop at Fry's instead unless I'm using the pharmacy because of Kris he's a great employee and I just enjoy interacting with him. Also, I'm not alone. I've talked to other people there too. That have said the same thing while waiting in line please do something about your cart. Seriously, you are losing business to Fry's because of that situation. The cards are much more user-friendly. You don't have to bend over to unplug the car the cart and there's a hook on the back of the seat to put the plug instead instead of having to bend over and push down in the bottom of the cart.. please get me new cards and have a more suitable area where people can walk between the cards to get in them to sit down read more

Clip the coupons in the app for the sale prices and they don't come off Need to check your receipt at the store. read more

Store is clean and has automatic paying machines. Prices charged sometimes however are incorrect and had to wait for attendant to help with that. The remodel seems to be complete for now. read more

I am frequently disappointed when I shop at this store. Prices and sales are often inaccurately displayed. Many times, I've needed to visit customer service after checking out because of a posted price not being honored. My bad for not reading the tiny date printed on the shelf tag from last week! The manager's special a few weeks ago was personal watermelon's, 2/$5. I was not only overcharged, the melons had suffered frost and were horrible. Dairy products have also been a problem for me. Checking expiration dates before purchase is essential and I'm disappointed each time I forget. I only shop here as needed. It's the closest store. I need to plan better and avoid the store completely! read more

Your salads are disgusting and that is impressive when all you literally need to do is tear up some lettuce. Less spine, more leaf, guys. For reals...It shouldn't be that hard to put together a salad. And I'm not even complaining about all the times I've gotten them with black lettuce. read more

Watch your prices! I just spent 15 minutes trying to check out here and 7 items were mischarged. I didn't even catch them all at the register, had to go to customer service after to get reimbursed for two additional wrong charges. They charged me over $30 incorrectly on 7 different items. If you're not watching closely I guarantee you are getting overcharged. Crazy. read more

All of the cashiers there are amazing. I have never met nicer people there then the cashiers and baggers. But the mangers who run the front end do nothing but sit around in their phones or sit and talk to each other with the manger wide open visibly doing nothing. And by visibly doing nothing I noticed the computers are never on. The lines end up wrapping around the store and the self checkout lines are backed up too but the women mangers just sit and laugh and talk and do nothing about how crazy the lines are. I understand being short staffed but shouldn't that mean you get off you butt in the office and work? As a former Safeway manger myself, this is unacceptable because it only hurts the customers and unfortunately paints safeway in a negative light to the community. It's no wonder why this store is always hiring because who would want to work for mangers in the front end like them? I watched a mother struggle with her three young children trying to bag her groceries and help the cashier while the mangers sat and watched. Totally unbelievable behavior. It's a shame this neighborhood store has turned out this way. read more

A really good grocery store. Came here once with friends that live in the area and marveled at how clean, organized and well stocked the place is. All of the staff that we interacted with were nice and helpful, too. They have a lot of variety on brands that are not available where I live. Prices are cheaper or the same. I wanted to get yogurt and some organic fruit for the little one while visiting the area but found the organic fruit here to be limited. I was able to get bananas and find one good honey crisp apple out of the pile but that's about it. I know Strawberries are just about in season in San Diego so I was hopeful I could get something decent for the little one. It didn't have to be magazine picture perfect, but I certainly didn't want ones that were half a day away from the compost bin. This seemed to be the case here so I refrained. Sigh...Strawberry season is just a few weeks away. We will have to wait. I was particularly annoyed by the employees stocking the shelves - in my short visit, my two encounters with them just produced a very chaotic and unfriendly shopping atmosphere. And that's where I'll ding them. Annoyance #1: I was in the produce section and I kid you not, was inching my way through a narrow part of the aisle because restock items / cart was to the left and an employee was to the right. Just as I got near the employee, dude grabbed a few boxes from the restock pile and dropped them to the floor blocking my path entirely. I could not get around it because his main stock was to the left of me and he was now on the far right..produce dead center. So, what's a girl to do??? I waited thinking he'd grab it realizing a customer was there but he just began organizing the produce on the shelf. He looked at me so he knew of my presence but didn't seemed to care. I waited for what seemed like a minute (was probably 15 seconds) but got annoyed and ended up just pushing my cart through. It was a hit a run...I didn't even slow down or look back. Boxes be damned! Annoyance #2: I was in the yogurt section and again...I felt like I had to block and tackle. Unlike the produce guy, the yogurt nazi didn't even look to see who was around him. He had boxes everywhere and was in the zone. I give him credit for that but I felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode. If he had acknowledged me, I imagined he would've said, "NO YOGURT FOR YOU - Come back in ONE YEAR!" Is there a Safeway rule that stocking shelves is more important than a customers experience? I mean, do the floor managers give a pep talk minutes before the store opens preaching, "Today, we must stock these shelves quickly at any and all costs...so team...on the count of 3....Go SAFEWAY!" (team bumps chests) I'm sure that may be a stretch but every where they were stocking shelves, they seemed more focused on that than allowing the customer to shop. Clearly, not a spectacular experience here. Thank heavens this isn't my local grocery store. Did I really just spend 10 minutes reviewing this store on Yelp? (heavy sigh) read more

I don't know if this Safeway is getting ready to close but unless they get some management in the store that wants to work and cares about the store they might as well close. I went shopping this morning; one check out no baggage help 10 customers ahead of me with full baskets. Self check out also had line of people waiting. No manager in site. One woman working customer service. Usual woman they have at customer service was either hiding in the office, which she usually does when there are customers waiting in line or she was not there. I got out of line and pushed my cart to the customer service area and left. Will not shop there again. I would advise anyone wanting customer service to go elsewhere. The grand opening was pretty impressive at this location. They had a free BBQ, Santa visit, tons of snow and some other vendors showcasing items on the outside. On the inside, they were giving away away samples of hot foods and other free sampling locations were scattered throughout the store. The bigwigs were in town also, but who cares about them. The local staff at this location is very helpful. Nothing inside this location is any different than any other Safeway, so after the hoopla, it will just be another Safeway. Too bad, they don't upgrade certain stores, like FRY's, but can't win em all. They just need need groceries in Anthem. read more

Even with problems in getting stock every where now David will go out of his way to find what the customers need & want. I miss shopping at my local grocery store-but what I miss the most is the outstanding customer service. Robert and Susan were always friendly enough to help me out with my groceries. We always had small talk and we always found something in common to chat about. The store always had all of my favorite items like lemon scones in the bakery and the olive bread was always on the list. The baker always sliced up the bread for me too. The best thing was there was always someone available to help you. Every employee that saw you was sweet, smiling and fabulous. The best part was during the holiday rush when the store was busy with customers, the managers made an effort to go down each aisle to make sure you were finding that tricky ingredient that you only buy once a year. I really miss shopping here but have wonderful memories of the small town feeling you got when you were a guest in their store. read more

I had to laugh at Shanna K's badge that read, "Customer Service Manager" as she yelled at two of us in her checkout line "THERE ARE 4 OTHER LINES OPEN YOU KNOW!" Her light was on and she had no one ahead of us... our apologies for inconveniencing you? Did not even acknowledge me once during checkout. Safeway is pulling a bait and switch with pricing. In addition to a Safeway Club card you NOW need to download an app to get ALL discounted/sale pricing. You may not know of this till you get to the cashier and even if you could distinguish the app items by the cashier wildly waving a print ad copy in your face, Safeway counts on you to be unwilling to hold up the line to download an app right there and then at checkout. This practice is underhanded and deceitful. read more

I am 72 years old. I shop at many grocery stores. I have no problem with most of the offerings of the Anthem Safeway and am very glad they have re-opened. HOWEVER, their deli employees are BY FAR the most rude, unfriendly, obnoxious deli workers I have ever encountered. One in particular actually THROWS stuff when you ask for some service. I have actually left the store and gone to Fry's when I see she is working. She is a VERY nasty employee and I cannot understand why she is still working at Anthem Safeway. For the record, almost every one of my friends feels the same. read more

Worst customer services out of all grocery stores up here in anthem, yes even worse than WalMart. Somehow all the old ladies working in this store are always mad at something. Management isn't any better. You feel so unwelcome shopping here. Glad we still got Albertsons and Frys around. read more

I really like this store, they have a fairly good selection of most things (hence the 4 not 5 stars) and it all seems very fresh and well presented. The staff are friendly and helpful and the store is very clean. The fresh baked breads are very good and the jalapeno and cheese stuff mushrooms are AWESOME. i love this Safeway's bakery! for one jasmin always does a amazing job finding everything i need and is always friendly. second, i'm not sure who helped me this day but over the summer (in july) i ordered a cake a few days before i needed it for my moms surprise birthday party, the cake caught me by surprise as it was delicious and very well decorated. if you need a cake or anything made for an event/ birthday definitely come to this safeway!!! ps. they are much better then walmart! read more

Something is very wrong with the management of this store. In a handful of visits about 40% of the items I shopped for were extraordinarily over-expired. Canned food that expired 2-3 years ago... Ice cream that has sublimated down to about 80% of its original volume (this takes a very, very long time), etc... And it's not just a few of each item that is long expired. I have often had to sift through most of the inventory of a product to find a single non-expired item. Either the management is trying to cut losses and boost profits by unloading expired products on unsuspecting customers or the stocking staff at this store is phenomenally incompetent. Or both. Either way, the high volume of expired groceries at this store is not merely incidental. read more

It never fails every time we come in we get Barbara the cashier!!! VERY RUDE!!!! I don't know what her problem is!! I feel like it's a burden for her to ring us up and heaven for bid she has to type anything in manually!!! I don't like it when our kids flutter their eyes I sure as heck don't like it when Barbara does especially because that's her job to ring us up!!! I tend to come to this location for my brakes as they to have a variety of deli meat. Unfortunately this was the first time I have ever been treated so disrespectfully in the store. The young man at the deli refused to help me and direct me to the closest subway location. Although this really is unfortunate I will continue to shop at this location as I do receive great customer service every time in there except for this one instance. read more

Unbelievable. It makes me cry every time I walk in and out of this store. For one, the service is very slow and un-professional. No one seems trained at all. Secondly, the prices on most of the things are very over over-priced. For instance, the mixed variety candy bags are wayyyy to pricey, at least for the one type that they have. Also, the miniature dog bed prices are out of this world. I am overall just disappointed with the overall experience of this trashy supermarket. Smh. read more

Safeway has been a nice store to have in Anthem for the 13 years we have lived here. It has changed over the years and having Fry's and Walmart I town now makes it difficult to stay competitive. We always appreciate the friendly staff and consistent service. If I need the convenience or a grocery store but a quick stop I always choose Safeway. The have a nice produce department and the meat counter is always helpful. read more

I still love Safeway. I know the prices are not the most competitive, but this location is so bright and airy and clean. The staff are wonderful and always call you by name when you checkout and offer to help you with your groceries to your car. I have to agree with the bad service reviews. It's not the worst service, just not good overall. I've been here a few times and it's not that they don't notice you, they just don't seem to care about your standing in line staring at them. Safeway in general also tends to be overpriced on many items within their limited selection (compared with Fry's and Walmart Neighborhood Market). It's kind of sad because they are convenient, and for that reason alone I'll be back periodically. That being said, it's a very clean and well organized store so maybe that's what they value. read more

Welcome back. It's a new store, with completely new staff and inventory. So far they seem to have corrected all of the flaws of the old store. The inventory is new, fresh and varied. The staff in enthusiastic and helpful. They are a little disorganized, with a few bugs to be worked out, but that's to be expected with any "maiden cruise". So far I'm really impressed. I really hope this continues since it's a convenient location, and the anchor to an important shopping center in Anthem, but we'll have to see if they're able to maintain their current happy state of affairs when the "new car smell" starts to wear off. read more
