This store needs new management. I live nearby and come here several times weekly. My negative experience starts in the parking lot. Unless you come during off hours, the search for a parking spot is a nightmare. Always full. Clearly people park here who are not shopping in Safeway. The man walking around with his tire marker seems to be quite ineffective. My biggest complaint is in the meat market. I would say 1 out of 4 times there is no one behind the counter. I will stand there with other customers waiting for someone to show up. Very frustrating. Especially when I am in a hurry. Have to go to the front of the store to ask the checkers to page or call someone. When someone finally comes out they are less than helpful. Why do they stock shelves during peak hours? Can't that be done during off hours? High turnover of checkers. Must be a reason. read more

This has been my goto grocery store since 1974. Since the remodel, I have not had one good experience shopping there. And after today, I shop there no longer! Let me explain ... Although Safeway in Burlingame has a pretty new face, the policies underlying store operations have, unfortunately, turned downward in a big way. Some would say they are simply being market savvy. I say they have lost touch with the community. I miss the old Safeway. 1. They will advertise an instore sale item, for example, a Butterball turkey @ $.99 per pound. Now the sky above the turkeys is riddled with $.99 per pound signs, I mean dozens of them. If you buy that turkey, though, you will be charged $1.99 per pound because you didn't know that you had to buy $25.00 of grocery items to get that lower price. And, of course, that doesn't include liquor so don't buy beer or wine to pump up the purchase. Why didn't you know? Because nowhere was that fact posted in-store. It WAS posted in their mailer, but you don't get the mailers so, of course, you can't read the fine print. This is akin to Best Buy saying they'll price match for the season in little letters in the lower right hand corner of the Wall Street Journal, yet coaching their employees in-store never to reveal this fact to a customer if a customer doesn't already know they will price match. And who reads the Wall Street Journal? This is crap! I have no time for this game playing. 2. Safeway also substantially increased their prices on alcohol to an uncomfortable level. I can now go to my local liquor store down the road and purchase beer and wine for 20% less than Safeway. This was NOT true prior to the remodel. Is this an alcohol tax to help pay for the new store. What bean counter in Oakland figured this was okay? During holiday seasons, by the way, they artificially increase their prices even more, like all those stores in New Jersey did after the Frankenstorm. Terrible practice in my opinion. Of course, if you're a pure capitalist, this is okay behavior. 3. Certain fruits, specifically apples and oranges, rot within a couple of days. This was NOT true a couple of years ago. I don't know why this is happening. Is our fruit coming from South America now? The reason I KNOW their fruits have gone downhill is I blend every day (Vitamix), which means I go through tons of fresh apples, oranges, bananas, spinach, kale, brocoli, carrots, etc EVERY DAY. Because of this I go to the Farmer's Market at CSM way more often than I ever did, always fresh. Whole Foods and Costco for the apples and oranges. 4. The parking lot is a total joke. All of the entrances and exits are badly misplaced. It is always a stressful experience. The street level lot is the most horribly designed parking lot in Burlingame. The roof lot is okay, but I wouldn't climb that mountain unless you have your wits about you. I was watching an elderly lady trying to maneuver the path up to the roof. OMG! Scary stuff! This is an accident waiting to happen. The elevator is too slow, WAY too slow. I would set aside 10 minutes JUST for the elevator. Anyway, I have witnessed several near accidents in these lots. And there are clearly too many businesses sharing these lots, always packed and stressful. 5. The store is not well run. The managers strut around like they know what they're doing. For sure they have learned the company lines, like good monkeys. Do they listen to their customers? Absolutely NOT! They weren't taught how to do that in training class. The customer is ALWAYS wrong! The non-managerial employees walk around with smiles and glossed over eyes. They listen but they are of no help. They are all scared to death of losing their jobs. All of the employees are simply there for the "machine" NOT for the customers. Which is why I don't shop there anymore. 6. As far as products go they have cut down on variety with the opening of the new store. Two brands in a category rather than five brands, for example, which makes for a rather unexciting experience. Also, every time I have go there, they are out of what I consider a KEY product. For example, last Thanksgiving they didn't have any turkey broth or organic chicken broth. Or certain herbs are always out of stock. From another customer "On recent visits they have been out of gluten-free bread, grass-fed beef, oatmeal, green onions, and bananas. Especially when something is on sale, there is a strong possibility they will be cleaned out." 7. I have written a few letters and filled out those cards and forwarded them to Safeway management over the years on these and other topics. Deaf ears! Nothing else to say! If you yelp grocery stores in the area, the Safeways in Burlingame, San Mateo, and Foster City, rank 35, 36, 37, and 38 out of 38 total! Have you ever tried to reach their customer service by phone to try and achieve getting some customer satisfaction at this store? Well save yourself some precious time and avoid getting frustrated. I've tried eleven times and when the customer service department attempt failed I thought ill outsmart them and go down their phone tree, still a huge fail and when I got lucky a couple of time to reach a real person I was put on a long hold and I even got disconnected. No wonder I hear their employees complaining a lot about how poorly management treats them. Too bad because I am probably one of their many customers who is in Safeway at least three to four times a week and never leave the store without at least spending $70 plus. I have finally lost my patience and I'll soon be shopping somewhere where my person presence counts. In the meantime after all this I gave up on the Burlingame branch and decided to call the Millbrae branch and after a few more attempts I finally got through to customer service. I needed to ask what I need to do with all the O Organic frozen vegetables that have recently been called back due to some chemical issues were people have actually died. Get a load of this, I have about a dozen of these bags stashed in my freezer and the clerk asked me if I still have the receipt because without it I would not be eligible to receive my cash and instead I will be issued a store credit. I said ms with the way I've been frustratingly treated I do not even want to know or hear the name Safeway from now on let alone setting a foot in there to spend my hard earned money. Rude, rude and then rude. After thirty one years shopping here, goodbye Safeway. Or do you even deserve a goodbye? You do not even deserve one star and the reason you got one is because if I didn't press on one it would let me post my complaint. read more

This is an okay Safeway just because the parking is the largest issue here. The lot is usually full and it's very difficult to find parking during spike hours. Everything is very spaced out though which I like and the produce section is large. They also provide self checkout which is helpful except they don't have enough registers and easily gets backed up leaving little room for people to pass by through be isles. read more

If you can help it, avoid this Safeway at all costs! I can't comment on the parking situation since I walk here, but I'm astounded at how bad the customer service is at this location - and it was only 9 AM! I asked one employee about the location of a granola bar brand, and they told me to go to aisle 8, which - wait for it - is the cat/dog food and laundry detergent aisle. Also, I flagged down another employee to see if the self-checkout machine takes cash. She refused to answer me, and another employee butts in to tell me that that checkout line is not open. Uh, duh, I'm just asking a question! They proceeded to tell me to stand in the ONLY checkout line open at the time, which had a long line. Never coming back here to buy anything ever again!! This Safeway has to be one of the nappiest Safeways on the planet. It's small, it doesn't have very good selection, the decor looks like a 1983 John Hughes movie, the parking is all whacked -- all in all, this is not a great shopping experience. You shop here because you have to, not because you want to. In fact, this place is so beat that it makes paying $12 for a chicken breast at the nearby Mollie Stones seem like a good idea. It's clear that Safeway hasn't invested in this store since the first Star Wars came out, which is too bad. There is another Safeway down El Camino that is much better. And that parking lot -- who designed that monstrosity? The one good point: the checkers seem very friendly and efficient. read more

The only checker on staff asked me to use the self check out. Self check out requires you to spend a little too much quality time with your food. More time that I have for buying groceries. Rings up the wrong price. Useless employees standing around with glazed robotic expressions. No help. Not the place if you want to buy your food and get out. I implore all people not to use this Safeway after 945pm or so. Once they close the self check out, the lines are ridiculous. I've seen the lines go halfway down the aisle on multiple occasions. THIS IS NOT A PET STORE. LEAVE YOUR DOGS AT HOME!!! Almost weekly I see people bring in their dogs. These are NOT service dogs, these are dogs people carry in, put in the baskets, in a stroller, etc. Not only is this illegal, it could get the store shut down due to health code violations. When I bring this up to employees, nothing is done. Since I've seen the same asian lady with her little white dog several times, I have to assume that the employees and managers don't care. (Again, this is NOT a service dog.) Maybe I should just start bringing in my pets when I shop. Parking on the ground level is impossible, but the roof parking is usually open. (If you can't get up that ramp, just turn in your license) The Bakery isn't that good. Sure, it's fresh, but it's flavorless. You might as well get a load of Wonder over their sourdough. The rest of the place isn't that bad... just shop smart, inspect your produce (shop early to get the best, that's just common sense), but the store letting in untrained animals just isn't acceptable. read more

I recently purchase a bottle of alcohol amongst other groceries from the Safeway in Burlingame. When transferring from the car to my house, the plastic bag split open and the bottle shattered. I didn't have the opportunity to return with my receipt until two days later. The manager informed me that their policy--which as far as I am aware isn't posted anywhere---is that they must immediately receive a call reporting the incident or have the customer return within 24 hours. Beyond the fact that one could easily falsely report the incident and get a free bottle of booze out of the exchange according to their guidelines, I simply didn't appreciate the underlying accusation--particularly as a regular customer for nearly 20 years. While I'm not saying that I'll never step foot into a Safeway again, I do intend to do the lion share of my shopping elsewhere from now on. I hope that equation works out for them. read more

Safeway has a lot of great selections of organic food, both fresh and frozen. Their organic potatoes are great and the berries are almost always better than other stores in the area. I love their prices and their self check. Wish they had organic sauerkraut but maybe that will come in time. read more

I usually hit up the Safeway in San Mateo. They're both new and very comparable. This Burlingame one, however, has a better selection of MILFs. No creeper. They also have an extra parking lot located on the roof of the store which is very convenient. read more

Checkout lanes are horrible at night. Only two lanes are open, no self-checkout and the lines are at least 10 deep.

This review is for the Starbucks in this location. Although the safeway staff and environment is new and absolutely beautiful, this is strictly for the starbucks (was not able to locate a separate yelp). They need to FIRE whoever the hell makes their pastries! I know its probably a private contract but OMG its just dry and taste like paper. I took a bite out of my banana nut bread and it was hard and dry to where I choked on it. Lizel who always makes my coffee in the AM is amazing! She gets it right ALL the time! She was sweet enough to allow me to exchange it for a pumpkin loaf which was a lot more moist and OK (not old tasting). I'm probably never going to get another pastry from this starbucks ever. Sadly misrepresented as to hours of operatin on Christmas Eve. Showed up at 4:50 with many other patrons as "store hours" were represented to be closing at 5:00. Safeway had an awesome wine sale recently (probably to compete with the famous 5cent elsewhere). But my wedding's coming up in May, and I had to stock up on my favorite wine for the coming shin-dig. The wine man working at Safeway is awesome! Just told him my exact order (Fetzer Gewurztraminer). I hesitated between 2-3 cases. Finally, told him I'd like 2.5 cases...he said "No problem, we'll have that in by Friday". Easy-peasy--wish everything else about the wedding was as simple. read more

I know now why the reviews are so bad. I went to this store for the first time today and the layout was terrible, the help was useless and the checker, while friendly, did not even attempt to pick up one of my bags to help me into the cart. I asked for freshly sliced cheese to be individually wrapped as I always do. The deli guy just gave me a lump of cheese in a bag. I asked him to wrap it properly and his supervisor came over, showed him how to sheet it, then she reweighed the cheese to charge me for the plastic sheets. When I asked why, she said they normally don't provide this service. I tried to find some Entenmann's coffee cake my husband asked for. I could not find a display anywhere. There was pastry near the deli, there was pastry near the pharmacy, there was pastry near the fish, and when I went to the bakery to ask, the clerk didn't know and walked me halfway round the store until she couldn't find it either. When I called to comment, I was disconnected by the Customer Service person. I am giving it 1 star because I have to rate it. My daughter lives nearby and shops here, but I don't live close by, but my local Safeway wouldn't ever tell me they can't do something for a customer. Not that it's ever come up. I don't like doing bad reviews, but I felt I had to share my experience because I wasted a lot of time walking round and round because nothing was stocked where it made sense -- making me go through each aisle because that's what management wants. read more

I have to admit this is a pretty damn good remodel for Burlingame. I got invited to the VIP soft opening and they had a pretty good selection of wine and various snacks. The aisles in this store are huge which allows for multiple shopping carts in the aisles. They have a sandwich bar, a starbucks, cafe seating inside and out, a fresh bakery, meat and seafood department and even roof top parking. The staff here are all new which is nice because some of the old staff from this store were really rude. I bet this will take a lot of business away from Mollie Stones. You'll see me around here often. read more

The new Safeway is finally here. A long overdue addition to Burlingame. The store is beautiful fresh and new. The employees are also new and seems like they really want to work there. Burlingame really needed this wonderful addition. I love the produce department. Parking can be difficult but what do you expect for a brand new venue that everyone in town wants to check out. I see pros and cons here but deep down I think this is a good thing for Burlingame and I personally am proud to welcome the new Safeway. read more

I think this safeway is just okay. Nothing great or nothing horrible. It's close to home and convenient. Parking is ample. The customer service needs help though. The clerks are usually not friendly and not helpful. They take their sweet time at thier job and do not care to move ppl through the lines. It is a small safeway and selection is small. I usually go to the san mateo store if I need more items. I would definitely watch them ring up your stuff through the scanners. I catch them over charging me all the time. I have shopped here quite a few times and although the store is new and looks nice the customer service is SEVERELY lacking. I only state this for one reason and that is every time I go in I am asked if I need help out to my car with the groceries. Nice huh? Well I am 6'1" and a big guy so I don't really need help, but when my 8 month PREGNANT wife goes by herself and shops she is never asked if she needs help out to her car. I know this may seem little but to me its more the principal of the thing. When my wife confronted the manager, George, he basically blew her off and had nothing really to offer. Sorry, but if you are looking for help don't look at this store. And yes, I agree with the other post about the produce lacking in quality, it was pretty bad last time I was there. read more

I just moved to Burlingame and I love it... except for our disgusting Safeway. My fiance and I went on our first night here to stock our fridge and pantry, but quickly realized we'd rather starve. Best Safeway in San Mateo county. We drive out of our way for this location for a few reasons, including: (a) nice cozy atmosphere with rooftop parking, (b) clean bathrooms where my brother shit his pants once, (c) no crazy salad lady who talks to us about salads every time we're in the salad section, and (d) wine and cranberry vodka tastings on the regular. Shop till you drop and then plop your kebop on the couch and munch your way into gluttony. read more

I cannot believe I returned to this store - never again. At 10:30 in the morning, parking was still difficult. The one yogurt I like was still not in stock (see previous review) - amusing/unbelievable! A very popular yogurt that I can find at every other store but is always a gaping empty shelf here (FAGE 0% HELLO!!!!!) And finally - NOT A SINGLE EXPRESS LANE was open. This Safeway is so clean and well stocked and organized! It's incredible. I only come here to do food runs for work, but it beats my local Safeway by a mile. One of the things that really stands out about this location is that the produce section is always well stocked and with produce that is not to over/underripe, which I find is the case in San Mateo. I only come in here early in the mornings and it's always the same cashier. He is friendly and of course there are very few people in the store at those early hours so it's easy to get in and out quickly. As I typically dread grocery shopping, this store makes me look forward to going! read more

Don't worry people this safeway is getting remodeled in a few months and will be closed for almost a year. I hope in that time the staff gets cleaned up also...The ladies that are clerks are so rudeand grumpy. They could care less that you are there or that you have anyplace else to be. They love chatting with each other and fighting over who has a break next...sooo tacky. I wanted very much to make Safeway my pharmacy after Broadway pharmacy closed to my disappointment. I would consider myself a very long standing loyal customer. I contacted a technician. I was told ivy (the manager) would return my call. needed a quote for some medication. I never received the call.... So I thought going in to meet her and explain I was self pay and brought receipts from two other pharmacies. Perhaps she would meet the price or at least work to make me a customer.. She greeted me without a smile. I explained my situation. She promised that she would call me to give me a quote. Knowing I was high and dry desperate to get this resolved. NO CALL! What kind of manager would not call me twice?? Bad news... Very disappointed in their customer service...will never go back again!! read more
