Been shopping here for over 30 years, tonight I went in for some spaghetti and sauce. Went through the checker, Gail, always helpful and great going through her. Paid for my food, and started walking towards the elevator, got stopped by a Isabel, asked me for my receipt, seriously? No, I just bought it and you saw me buy it. I refused, started walking again, her: show me your receipt, me: no! Go away! So, she calls over another guy, James from the deli. He asks me for my receipt, sorry no. Since when did you start asking for receipts, I asked the girl, she pops off everyday. Yea no, in my head I'm thinking, I'm here 3 times a week and you never, or has anyone else ever asked for a receipt.. continued to walk away and was harassed by Isabel by blocking the elevator door so I couldn't leave. I said call the police then.. I guess James was already in the process. $11 worth of food.. This is Los Altos, not the ghetto, wtf people!! Thankfully, Draeger's is close by down the street, might have to start going there. read more

Aaargh! I need to use this place most often in the mornings. And guess what? You had better be prepared for the front doors to still be locked. I suppose they expect anyone coming to park in the ground floor parking lot and come in through the back to get to the escalators up, but heaven help you if not, because you'll need to walk around a bit to get to the same spot. AND- they seem to have discontinued the use of shopping baskets (not carts) meaning, once you arrive at the top of the escalators, you won't find a handy stack of baskets waiting for you anymore. They seemed, at first, to have moved them over by the elevators, but even that's gone now. But then again, after two weeks or more of missing baskets, now they are back. Hopefully for good. But a lot of times times they're out of the "fresh bread baked daily" for more than two days at a time. Just thought I'd let 'em have it. read more

I got two (expensive) steaks from the meat department. Despite the 15 minute wait until someone actually was in the meat department, I was disappointed when I arrived home. The other side of the steaks that were not visible in store were deep brown and the meat had a strong unappetizing smell when I got it out of the bag. I do not recommend buying fresh meat here. read more

The manager Jose and his team are doing a fantastic job during these hard times - he and the team always greet me with a smile and a "hello what can we help you find?" Their social distancing is perfect and so easy to follow! The cashiers are cheerful and friendly and how they manage this with these times is a tribute to their dedication and professionalism. Parking and access is super easy - I have tried other grocery stores but none compare to what Jose is having his team do! read more

Moldy soggy pizza and slimy salad . Went in to see the manager and the acting manager laughed at me. Told him he might want to be a bit more serious when they are selling health hazards. Also suggested they might want to clear the fridge of all the other soggy pizzas. Watch out. This is a basic Safeway store. In my visit I there was a discrepancy between the price noted and the cash register. I was told, I have to go to customer service to correct the error. Waited over 20 minutes and no one showed up. I went back to the register and see if as if they can help since there is no one at customer service desk. There was man in line in front of me and as soon as he finished his transactions, I asked the person at the register if she can help. That was when this guy started a racist rant as he was not still done, even though he had his receipt in his hand. While this was happening, none of the employees ( 3 including the person at the register) intervened to stop this incident. This is Safeway's property and responsibility to protect their patrons and create a safe environment. At the end of this, the person at the register told me, their customer service person is on lunch break and no one could help. I purchased 3 items, wasted 30 minutes, paid almost $15 over the advertised price and was subject to a long racist rant while they watched. read more

Worst grocery store I've ever been to!!! Constantly getting home with VERY EXPIRED food. The lines are always ridiculous. I wanted in like to check out today for 28 minutes!!! I finally asked to speak with a manager and the guy basically told me no. I went over to customer service and a manager was called and no one ever showed up. Worst customer service ever!! " Oh Safeway....How you frustrate and disappoint me.... Although you spent millions on a fancy building, with underground parking, patio and Whole Foods inspired interior, The grocery emperor has no clothes, and quickly you see that everything is as it was before. I was semi-hopeful that the Los Altos Safeway would offer more variety due to being in sleepy quaint and wealthy Los Altos. The building is impressive, yet I personally believe that the tall building ruins the quaintness of the town. What were they thinking? There is a lovely downtown, and before the "great build". the downtown felt as if it rolled across Foothill Expressway and included the town green, ending with bungalows and estates. It all just felt right. I should note that I had lived about a mile from the downtown area 10 years ago. Los Altos was Los Altos, with a unique flavor all its own. Now the town looks like it is trying to be Walnut Creek. Los Altos is old enough to know who it is, and trying to be something else is, as with old people, trying to act too young, generally a bad idea. But there was definitely a need for an upgrade. And with Draeggars, Andronico's and Whole Foods in the area, I can see where they were going; except they didn't go all the way. So what is the problem? Why the disappointment and frustration? For an East Coast transplant from years past, Safeway is just a mediocre store offering the same general products as any other Safeway. I was hoping with this store, or the one in Cupertino, that they could finally rise to a Giant, Shaws, or Wegmans. Not even close. For instance the deli at this Los Altos store is sad. Its brand new shiny display cases are filled with the usual bland prepared foods, and a woefully substandard deli case. The deli meats are fit into a four foot section and only "Primo", aka Safeway, meats and cheese offered. Sprouts, Whole Foods, Draeggars and Andronico's have wonderful deli departments filled with distinctive meats. Passing by the upgraded cheese case, I see the same cheeses as before. In the dairy isle, if you are looking for a family size bag of shredded cheese, surprise! Only Safeway brand is available. This is a trend I have noticed with Safeway in general, more and more Lucerene products with no other choices. The wine department again, same as before. They offer some select regional products, which is a good start, and you can get organic foods, but it appears that this store looks like it should offer more, but sadly does not. As if Safeway Corporation, not surprisingly, will only go so far to improve. I will enjoy the nice new mega store when I am shopping for Kraft Velveeta N Cheese, Tide, Robitussin, and Lays potato chips. Safeway, your fancy million dollar store is filled with blandness. Wouldn't it have been nice if they could have broke from the pack, and went the Wegmans route? I will continue shopping just as I had before, as there is no competition with the cheeses, wines, organic chicken and meats, artisan breads, and most everything else that other stores offer. Newly opened completely rebuilt Safeway supermarket. 2nd floor is where the shopping is at, plenty if parking in the street level underneath. This is a nice, bright , spacious full service supermarket complete with a Starbucks inside. Good donut selection and self check out machines. Nice. read more

This is now the closest grocery store to my house and I was excited when it opened. Now that I've tried shopping here a few times, I am incredibly disappointed by it. Despite the millions of dollars that Safeway must have spent building the new store to replace the old decrepit Los Altos Safeway, the money appears to have been wasted because the new store still suffers from the same problems: employees who haven't been trained and don't give a &*%#, items that are old and potentially dangerous still on the shelves, and no prepared food that isn't unhealthy and full of chemicals. A few recent examples: * a Meat counter employee who didn't know how to properly wrap raw meat in butcher paper; he cut a small square that didn't even cover the meat i was buying, and tried to make it stick with an extra label over the top. Pro tip: when you can still see the meat, you haven't wrapped it properly. * a package of salami in the refrigerated section that was literally dark brown when every other package was a (normal) pink/red color. it was not past its date and, when my wife asked the manager why it was like that, she admitted it had been left out of the refrigerator too long. she went on to say that sometimes such items will be put back in the refrigerator to see if the color will change back (!) to red so it does not need to be thrown away. what?? so you're purposely keeping food you know is potentially dangerous? * i arrived at the meat counter just after they packed up all the meat packages from the display case. they were sitting on the cart still, but the employee said he didn't know which steaks were which--they don't label them when they put them in the rack. how does the person in the morning know which meat are the grass-fed ones? the employee then went on to show me the pre-packed steaks and said they were "packaged at the same time" as the items that were in their display case. however the first steak he showed me was brown and old. when i asked him about it, he admitted it was old and would probably be marked for discount(!) in the morning. so.. it obviously wasn't packaged at the same time, was it? * one evening (7pm) they were all out of rotisserie chickens, and i asked the guy behind the deli counter if there were more. He quickly said yes, they're bringing out a new batch. Great! so i took care of shopping for a couple of other items and swung back to the deli area. They still weren't there, so i flagged him down, and he said they would be right out. OK, walk around and wait another 10 mins. Still not out. So I found the same guy and asked him where they were. He said "oh, it'll be another 30 mins before they're done cooking". What?? then why did you tell me they would be right out--just to waste my time? * A Deli counter employee was making my breakfast sandwich, and tried to sub in an egg-white patty instead of one made from the whole egg because "he was out". I told him that I wanted the whole egg one. He sighed. then turned around, and opened the refrigerator door that was literally behind him, and pulled out a bin of whole egg patties, and gave me one. Were you really trying to save the effort of having to turn around?? I'm sure whoever decided to spend the money to build a nice Safeway would be shocked by these stories, but obviously the local management of this store does not care. They have done a bad job of either hiring or training their employees, and it jeopardizes the investment that has been made because their mismanagement will have consequences. read more

Ugh, this place is now so "fancy" in a wanna be way thx to Sergey Brin's ex-wife thinking we needed more monstrous bldgs in Los Altos that it's added 5-10 minutes to my shopping time. Wow! These guys really got it right. It is the nicest Safeway I have ever seen. It is actually fun to shop there. Their prices are a little high and comparable to Draegers. The parking is SUPERB! Sending the shopping carts up and down the escalator...FUN! The only thing that gets on my nerves are the self serve machines. That technology has a ways to go I think. read more

The pharmacist on duty on Saturday afternoon 1/26 did not bother to read the vaccination prescription that my doctor provided. She tried to give me a vaccination for a flu shot, which is what she assumed I was there for. Also, it's ridiculous that Safeway posts operating hours for the pharmacy but staffs it with only one person who closes for a lunch break. Needless to say, I don't recommend anyone going there. read more

I don't know who is running this place but 3 times this week I went to go there and the doors were locked. Today both doors locked on the street side so I walked to Starbucks on Main st. This is around 9am, not acceptable. Also, the old guy working the Starbucks cannot make a drink and gets flustered when there is a line. I'm all for hiring the elderly, but Starbucks is not the right position for them. I don't have half an hour to wait for a drink. read more

Gorgeous new store with great 30% wine sales occasionally. BUT then try to check out! You have to check out wine with a real checker (not self-check) according to state law. So you stand in line with about 20 others waiting on 3 checkers for this huge store with about 15 check-out lines. Where are the checkers? When you ask they say that's all they have today. And the store manager? Absent. Be prepared to be frustrated or just wait calmly in the long line to check out. read more

The manager here needs to be removed or investigated immediately. I am one of two young women who were harassed and treated like criminals just now for being in the store bathroom. Greeted with an aggressive bang on the door and "you need to get out right now", my friend and I were using the facilities to change our clothes and rinse our faces after a long, exhausting night traveling. We are careful to be kind to all people we encounter, so being treated this way was a shock. The manager and four other "men" surrounded us and watched as they forced us empty our bags(mine filled with thongs and other personal woman items, that BELONG TO ME). Please do something Safeway, this will not be the last you hear from me. He specifically mentioned that he wasn't ashamed or embarrassed about how he was treating us, despite clearly being wrong. It was an interesting experience to be treated like a criminal having never stolen a thing in my life, so thank you for showing me how you would treat a person who may be stealing(food?). Pharmacy is convenient. This is why I have continued to use it for 2 years. I have two basic requests. Assist me when I approach the counter, and be friendly, or at least do not go out of your way to let me know you are annoyed that I have interrupted your conversation. Majority of the time I come in, the techs are behind the counter, talking to each other as I approach the counter. I stand there, hearing every word, and they go on talking for several minutes as I stand and stare at them. No acknowledgment that I am standing there and that they will help me. Last conversation was about weekend plans, one before that was problems at home. Last visit, after 6 minutes. Yes, I timed them, I finally said 'hello', and received an eye roll, and the employee came to the register, continuing her conversation with the other employee. Interrupted to ask my name, and confirm the medication, but continued to discuss problems at home as she was helping me. Really? Called the store three times to ask to speak to the manager, which is my preference over yelp. Left 3 messages with promises of a return call, received none. Switching my family to another pharmacy. read more

I purchase my items at this Safeway primarily because of its proximity to my house ONLY. The service is average at best. What is the purpose of having numerous check out lines, if only to be forced to self check-out - which often times does not work without issue. I would go on and on but the reviews below echo much of the same opportunities I experience - all too often. Coach Bobby Knight "People will deliver the minimum of the maximum you allow". The team members reflect that of their leader. The GM needs to up his / her game. On the upside, the store prices and rewards program with Chevron make up in a small way for how poorly this store is managed. read more

Sandy at the sandwich counter is just awful. When I started working nearby, I was excited to have Safeway so close for cheap and easy lunches. However, my hopes were soon thwarted by her absolutely terrible attitude. I have worked retail and fully understand what good customer service looks like. She in no way shape or form provides it. I don't usually Yelp my bad experiences, but she is so terrible I feel like this cannot be ignored. She is very flat emotionally with customers - which wouldn't normally bug me, I don't by any means expect super happy cheery greetings - but she doesn't have to be so flippin' rude. I have personally seen her take a full minute before acknowledging someone is waiting and then, finally, ask, "What do you want?" Not, "How can I help you or what can I get for you?", but a rude whattayawant. That is an unacceptable way to greet a customer. In the months I have been working nearby, I have seen her act consistently in this awful way. It's one thing to have a bad day - we all have them - but her attitude is consistently bad, consistently rude, and her product knowledge is consistently zilch. Today I was really in the mood for a sandwich and willing to brave her horrid presence. I try to order a sandwich that is new to the menu and she stares at me blankly and snarls, "What is that?" She somehow made me feel like I was the idiot when she was the one that doesn't even know her own menu! She is clearly so unhappy in her own life and clearly despises her job - I call on the management of Safeway to do something about her. Her rudeness is so offensive I can't fathom how she still has a job. Her presence alone makes me never want to go back there. read more

The "New" Safeway was built at the same spot as the old one. They just simply demolished and built a better building and established the same establishment. Any who, let's get down to the business and talk about the Safeway itself! As many of you may know, Los Altos & Los Altos Hills are both on a smaller scale for a Town, therefore, you probably won't see too many large super market around the area. There are only few grocery stores around these small town. Rancho Grocery by Foothills & Magdalena, another Safeway located by Miramonte, and Draeger's on the same street but down the road. Anyway, you get the point, there are not many grocery stores close by, but this Safeway will be the "newest" around the area (Building & setting). As many yelpers stated, this store is super clean and have many variety of selection from hot/cold food, bakery, meat section, vegetables, and other daily necessities items you can find in the store. Personally, I never had experiences with the meat section so I wouldn't have any comments here. As for their Hot/cold food department, I personally felt that the staffs were not properly trained, or they just do not know what they are doing beside packing and making sushi.... Not trying to offend anyone, but that was just my experience. One time, I tried to purchased a sandwich with a wheat roll bread. But the staff member grabbed the sliced bread and about the make the sandwich. I told her that I want it on the roll bread, she has to check-in with her manager to determined if they sell any roll-bread for sandwich selection..... Another time, I tried to get some Fried Chicken and i followed the direction stated on the sign and wanted to verify with the staff. Once again, they have to call their manager to verify for the price and the quantities.... I am not too convinced that the workers received proper training or they are just simply afraid of making mistake. I do not know. For their self-check out system, I would said it's quite horrible. You may ask why? Well, I've been using it for more than 10 times for self-check out and I have at least 50% chances encounter a problem. Situation 1 - Bring my own bags. I brought my own bags, and the system just go to the screen and stated for employees to verify. I didn't see any employee by the self-check out area (Not sure where they went, but they should of be there). So I turned my head and asked the employee by the register and asked, "if it's possible for you to assist me for the bag issues, or can you help me to get another employee to solve this?", he was busy and gave me a head sign stated he understood and he will get the help. I was waiting there for 5 mins until someone came by..... Situation 2- No bags used I didn't need a bag, because i was only grabbing like 2 items. Before i paid, the system asked how many bags i used. I selected no bags used. Then next thing you know, i was waiting for another 5 mins before someone came by to solve this issue. Overall, I am not sure if they are short staffed, because the other store down by mountain view by San Antonio never have this issue in regarding to self-check out. Anyway, this is a great store, but staffs should probably received proper training. Also safeway should also stationed an employee by the self-check out to make sure check-out processes are smooth without hassles. read more

Always clean, very very very rarely are there lines to checkout, and the butchers are the biggest sweethearts around. But the deli people. OH MY GOSH! I try so hard to be patient, but they have 2 guys working there 1 who is extremely rude and the other who is extremely slow. I got a call from store manager as follow up to an email I sent to Safeway corporate. I appreciate he took the time to call and apologize. I know the store was very busy when I was there...patience is a virtue which I was lacking yesterday...Really disappointed...just left Safeway in Los Altos. Tried to buy a bottle of Patron. I went to cashier at front of store and asked for someone to unlock and provide and she called for someone..waited 10 minutes, no one came. Went back to same cashier asked again, this time I don't think she called for anyone, but went and waited again for at least 10 minutes...still no one to assist. Checked out with my other groceries at same cashier lane and asked if she could have someone grab it and she said no....not very good customer service. I should have asked for a manager but I don't think that should be necessary to get what you need...:/ read more

This place is so over. Since the remodel it's done nothing but go downhill. As I walked in today the outside trashcan was overflowing, throwaways on top of cabinets in the downstairs entry, filthy escalators. I had gone to have some blood drawn at the pharmacy. It was supposed to run from 6:00 to 7:s0. I went to the pharmacy counter. I was the only customer. The one employee, perhaps pharmacist, was on the phone, and on the phone, and on the phone without even a nod to me. There was no sign anywhere pointing to the blood test area. I finally found an unmarked room to the side and simply walked in. Apparently that was the spot but it was completely empty. This was a 90 minute window and yet the nurse needed a break apparently. No note about when anyone would be back. I went back to the counter. Person still on the phone. Another customer came up and we complained about the service to each other. I guess she finally heard us as she put the customer on hold. I asked for the blood testing and she said "next door". I said "I tried that." "oh no. it's full of people", she said. Then she finally went over and opened the door. "HumI wonder where they went?" Well I did too. That was the end of that venture since no one knew anything. I found the mgr but he said, "Sorry I have nothing to do with the pharmacy." I guess he has nothing to do with the filth at the entry to the store either. I took my bag of cherries and went to the self-checkout. Every register was full but two. To no one's surprise both of those were broken. Of course, no one was at the area to help. Apparently he was helping someone else who couldn't get the registers to work. He tried to reset one of the registers but it was having none of it. The only reason I got my cherries was because the one manned register had only one customer. Frankly this store isn't worth your time. Go down to Draeger's. Yes it costs more but you can buy things without a battle. IMO, I think Safeway will soon be over and out at all locations. read more

I ordered a birthday cake for my daughter and on the pick up date they told me they forgot to do it because they didn't see the order. I paid in ave Vance and everything ! They ask me to pick a random one which is the plain white with couple carrots on it . And I say if I would have to pick a random one I wouldn't come here to order in advance and choose a design ! We have a theme for the birthday ! They said they canning do anything and refund me the money. What else can I say.... read more

I work just down the street from this store and I go there almost everyday for my lunch. I have worked at Safeway before and I can honestly say they are the best store I have ever been to. The employees at the deli (especially James and Hector) do a wonderful job and are always friendly and make my sandwiches with haste since I'm on my lunch break. The Starbucks there has to get its own acknowledgement because they are just phenominal. Lilly, Amy, Fidelia, and Gustavo are all so sweet and genuiune and make my drinks soooo much better than the regular store down the street. I won't go anywhere else except them in Los Altos! Overall, fantastic service, great food, cheap prices. Other Safeways can't compare! read more

The manager was very nice and will report my complaint to corporate. He was very apologetic about the foreign bodies we found in the Safeway Signature soup. The particular soup was white bean & chicken. I hope I don't get sick. ( negative stars for the soup 5 stars for the manager.) I will never buy there signature soups again. read more

We ordered a custom half sheet cake for a party using a photograph for the top theme. The bakers did an excellent job reproducing the photo and matching the colors in the roses to the rest of the cake. The cake was light and fluffy and the icing was just perfect (not too sweet). The cake was ready as promised and the cost was very reasonably priced compared to other bakeries. read more

The eating area and bathrooms in this store are perpetually a filthy, disgusting mess. The last two times I've been here, the eating area trashcan was piled so high it was falling all over the floor. When you are done, there are no other trash cans, so you just have to balance your trash too as best you can. This time I asked for a manager and very politely informed him the eating area needed to be cleaned, walked him over and showed him all the crumbs and trash everywhere. He didn't say anything (certainly not "sorry") and when I was done talking just walked away. I checked after I was done shopping an hour later and nothing had been done to fix it. We deserve better than this in our town. Either shape up or close down so someone else can do the job right. It's gross, and probably a health code violation, but the worst part of all is the attitude. read more

The people work in this Safeway flower department do not know how to make corsage. A week before my son's senior prom, I had ordered a corsage from them. On the day of the event, I went to pick up the corsage and was shocked. It did not look like corsage but a Boutonniere that had three baby roses, a green leaf, and a long stem with a ribbon in the back. It would not stay on a person's wrist. I asked them to fix it by shortening the stem, adding ribbon and baby spread. They charged me extra $3.00 but made it worse. At that time I knew that they did not know how to make corsages. I had tried the Safeway on floweriest Ave, the lady turned me away because she did not have any material to make one. I then stoped by flower department in Safeway Community Market on Fremont Ave, and Pippy who works there made a beautiful corsage within 10 minutes and in time for my son to take it to his pre-prom party. Don't order corsage from this Safeway unless their florists have been trained. See their corsage sample first before ordering one. read more
