My wife did a major shopping at the San Antonio Safeway in advance of Thanksgiving. There was a coupon in the app that reduced the price of the item, Despite having "clipped" it, the receipt at the register failed to recognize this discount, We only detected it when she got home, This is not the first time this has occurred, but typically it is not worth the time, trouble and aggravation to go back. This one was worth $10 so I went back. Met w/ the asst mgr working cust service. She explained that the system is down loaded from corporate and she was unable to "fix" the problem. (Who knows how many other customers were subject to this error?). When I suggested she talk to her district mgr, she said she never gets to see (him/her) only the store manager has direct conversations. Further, Safway corporate doesn't listen to employees and is oblivious of bad business practices and loss of customers due to poor customer service. I was offered a $5 gift card as a part of service recovery. Bottom line, whenever I have an opportunity...I'll go to another grocery store instead of Safeway. This is not our first time where we have encountered this problem. If Safeway corporate reads this...check out your software personnel and verify the down load for errors prior to release. I purchased 3 gifts cards on December 24, 2021 and time 7:11PM per receipt. I was happy to make it on Christmas Eve after a day of work. Christmas came and I gave out the gift cards. When one of the beneficiaries was ready to use the card, opened the package and the card had been cut in half. The card numbers had already been used. I went to customer service at this Safeway to report and the staff just didn't care, so they didn't do anything to help resolve this. Imagine how embarrassing it is to give someone a gift on Christmas and they find out the gift is bogus. It was a double loss because I had to give a second gift to make up of this. I am a regular Safeway customer and wouldn't buy their gift cards again. I hope others make second thoughts. The gift card numbers should not be visible in package because anyone can take picture of them and if it gets activated, they can use it before the buyer gets to use the card. Gift cards should be in locked area. It's a lot of money that can be put on them. It's better to use services like Zelle to send money as gift - there are no fees compared to gift cards. read more

This market still lists open 24 hours on the door sign and Website. It's listed as open 24 hours everywhere. But it hasn't been for some time. In fact the closing time is really random depending on how many people are working. But they don't have the courtesy to even put a readable hand-lettered sign on the door saying 'CLOSED'. How much trouble is that? You have to park, then walk over to the door to see if it opens and look for the little lock bar. Safeway is apparently rich enough that they can be seriously arrogant. Otherwise, it's a fine market. I've been shopping at Mountain View Safeway's for 30 years. But this is months old. This place is nicer than walmart and have better selections. Decent prices too especially if you have a club card. If you see Ambrose who's in charge of the self-checkout, he will clean up every use for the self-check out which is a plus there. I stopped going there because of the assumed crowds at April & May but now everything is under control and hope will be under control during the COVID-19 pandemic. This Safeway advertises itself as being open 24 hours, but seems to be operating on whatever schedule is convenient for them. Tonight, for example, it was closed at 11:00 pm. Tonight was not unusual recently. Their explanation was short-staffing. If so, why don't they either 1) change their posted hours of operations accordingly, or 2) pay people enough to work there? While they're at it, perhaps they could also restock the many empty shelves that remain empty for hours. At the moment, this is a poor excuse for a grocery store. Update: I received a message through Yelp from a "Dawn" from Safeway, inviting me to contact the store's leadership through the Contact function of their site. First, good luck finding that option on their site. After I finally did, it turns out to be simply another robo-chat function, with no option to send a message to a live human being. Nonetheless, I left a message, hoping that a real person actually reads the messages. That was about 12 hours ago. No reply so far. Very disappointed that I went to my local Safeway on the 2nd of the month and their money order machine was down. I asked the employee about it and she said they were out of paper. She was very flippant with her response. Like I had to right to question her. For me this is completely unacceptable to have such a vital service unavailable for no other reason than being out of paper. Where is the preparation and organization? Many people in the community who are unbanked or want to avoid large bank fees rely on this service. Service sucks at many Safeway. A lot of the staff have been with the company for so many years it's almost impossible to fire them and they know it and their bad attitude trickles down to customers. Very unfriendly service. When I was at the self-check last night, the "finish and pay" button didn't work. So I talked to a lady at the self-check, who is in charge of taking care of all troubles there. I said, "I can't finish and pay. Can you take a look?" She said, "It should work." I was talking to her because it didn't work! She didn't even want to move a few steps. I said that it didn't work, several more times and finally she came to the check. Just a tip -- don't come to this store before 9 am Sunday morning hoping to buy a few items and check out quickly. Self-checkout is not open before 9 am (not sure when it does open) and the checkout lanes are severely understaffed, perhaps because most of the employees in the store are busy restocking. The San Antonio Shopping Center Trader Joe's is well-staffed and and Walmart's self-checkout hours are the same as their store hours. read more

This super-spacious 24-hour Safeway serves as a fixed anchor of a large apartment 'campus'. Inside, find a Wells Fargo branch, plenty of cafe seating, free Wi-Fi plus an in-house Starbucks (because it is way too much work to go outside and walk across the lot about twenty yards to the stand-alone Starbucks), produce area with plenty of organic options, a wine corner, pharmacy, even a brightly lit central section resembling a pop-up Target or CVS. Though it feels sort of ware-house-y-- like there's too much building for the super-market itself-- it is super-clean and super-nice. And klerb karrd "specials" abound-- you *do* know those are closer to the prices they're supposed to be. Take that, Whole Fools. ;p (kidding-- WFM is aiight) Self-check-outs for those in a rush or o-c-d control freak germ-a-phobes. A worker is stationed there when machines go wonky. Parking surrounds the massive store at ground level, as well as a-top the structure. Ooh aah, discover spacious elevators and shopping carts up on the roof, where some security patrol at night might be useful. Word is Albertson's could take over or merge with the grocery chain. Having been in the US for 6 years, today is my first day confronting a racist. Right here in the Safeway pharmacy. And the racist, is of the same race as me -- a Chinese. This lady consistently had an attitude towards me in the past. I could understand that. People are not always happy. It's not a problem. Until today. There were 3 people waiting in line today. Lady A with her relatives, lady B in front of me. She was serving lady A. Lady A 's families were leaning towards the counter, waiting for her. When lady A was done, her relatives were still there, leaning next to the counter. Lady B moved to the counter and she started serving her. Then she called me out: could you move back? Patient's privacy. It's my fault to be too close if I was, and I sincerely apologize. However, there are two issues. 1. I was standing where lady B was standing at when lady A was served. And she didn't ask lady B to back off, then. 2. When lady B was served, lady A's relatives were still there, for a while. I confronted her. And she said: they were relatives. Ok, you mean they are lady B's relatives? Fine. To end this disgusting encounter, Have a good day everyone. read more

I like the wider selection of this new Safeway, but the layout is overwhelming and hard to figure out. I will never understand when grocery stores separate food aisles with huge huge aisles of toiletries and diapers. Still, thanks for replacing one 24-hour safeway with another, and thanks for stocking things like miso and almond meal, whereas at the last store, they would just look at me blankly if I asked for those items. The parking situation is going to be a nightmare as more businesses come... No more quick trips to the California store for a few last-minute items; getting to this one involves either weaving through parking lots or facing El Camino, so I guess this is the start for us for seriously planning our meals for the whole week. Whole Foods is across the street and is so much nicer than the old Safeway, both in the way the store looked and felt but also the selection. But this store is nice, they have a massive selection, and it includes things we might actually want. Whole foods may have a slightly larger olive bar, ok maybe its twice the size, but really most of those olives are just for show. On the left wall is the bakery, bread then Wine, across from it are the Breakfast bar, Sushi Bar, then Deli., and a massive cheese selection. The two very large isles of frozen goods are next. The Pharmacy is in the back middle, and in front of it are the isles of toiletries lit up with under shelf led lights. Glowing Tampons. Really bright glowing tampons. The Fruit and Vegi Isles are to the far right, right next to the ethnic food isles. There is of course a Starbucks in the store to compliment the one in the shared parking lot, Speaking of the front parking lot. it is often full but there is parking up top that always has space, and massive Elevators that have nice windows showing the Brick walls, will take you to your car. read more

Definitely utilize the rooftop parking; Ground level parking gets very congested and the rooftop parking is never full. I always grab something sweet from the bakery when I go. The pumpkin vanilla bean cheesecake they have for fall is fantastic! Good selection of brands and produce. Be careful to read for the sales, though, as some of your sale items might not ring up correctly if you do not follow some of the sale guidelines (i.e. Must buy 4 to get "X" item for $2). read more

After hearing mixed reviews piquing my curiosity, along with a post workout thirst, I decided to visit this new Safeway. Let's break it down: Selection: This store is bigger than many nearby locations, but bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. While there was a greater product variety, the additional items didn't seem to be anything I would really be interested in buying. For example, they had a bigger hummus selection with an added brand compared to a couple of the other stores I have visited, however the brand is not one I would want to buy so they might as well have kept it off the shelves. I have been impressed with their expanded drink selection lately as the only supermarket in the area to carry my beloved Bai 5 drinks and with good sales on Zevia. Parking: Just wait until the apartment complex is completed. Then this area will become a nightmare. Although I am sure people who live next door will walk to Safeway, there will be lots of people just meandering in the parking lot. The area out front was crowded enough. Employees: I had heard the employees were unfriendly and check out lines were long, however, this was not my experience. I didn't wait nearly as long as I have had to at other Safeway locations. The employee did her best to call each customer by name and tell them their savings. I cringed as she butchered each person's name, but it's the effort that counts....but really my last name is a sound-it-out one and even that was mangled. Also, a side note is that the pharmacy looked pretty brand spanking new. The outside of the building was also quite architecturally pretty looking for a Safeway. Anyway, there is really no need for me to visit this Safeway with six other supermarkets that I prefer nearby. The only reason I would come here is for that ellusive Bai drink. What is wrong with this Pic? (taken today 4/4/14 6:30 pm at Safeway - 645 San Antonio Rd, Mountain View, CA 94040) This is a self-check out lane..... but lane is on wrong side blocking other checkout counters even if sign is on other side. You know why .... because of store manger 'Juan Carlos' thinks that way.... There were 2 lanes right and left, I was waiting in right lane next to the sign with few others, when Juan (Stone Manger) came and said that there should only be one lane and telling me that other lane is the correct one. When I asked why the lane I am standing is not correct, he started arguing that sign doesn't say lane should be on left or right and I should go at the back of other lane. Instead of talking politely and fixing signs if not right (which I doubt), he was very rude and weird. Safeway should fix self-checkout signs to specify where the lane should be so that store manger like Juan doesn't decide where the lane should start (left or right) and cause confusion and headache. I would give this store zero if i was able. It is 1am and the store that stays open 24hours has NOT ONE PERSON in the check outs! I see an individual a young male when asked if he can call someone he rudely replied "I'm the cashier and we'll open again @ 1:15, you can wait" I was kindly talked to by a young lady in the sandwich department and said her apologies for his reply. And also said that he is in fact the individual that would check me out. When asked again I was completely ignored. And given a very rude look. My go to grocery store in Palo Alto. They usually have any ingredient I need, unless it's for an ethnic cuisine (but then again, no single grocery store has everything). This store sets a high standard for Safeways, and I hadn't realized that others weren't so well stocked and kept up, until I went to some in other areas. I'm also glad that they're open late again (hours were limited for part of the pandemic). And I think there's just a small awkward window around 1am when nobody is at the checkout to help (self checkout is closed by then). read more

This is for the florist part of Safeway. Whenever I come in to buy a flower bouquet, the staff in the florist kiosk are very helpful. On the weekends, green flower buckets are filled to the max. Honestly i swoop in that department for 15 min. I've been there so many times, they know to cut my stems. Only bad thing, prices are on the higher side and sometimes if their is a line, no help is requested. I'm not disappointed with the florist dept tho. read more

This Safeway has been my trusted neighborhood grocery store for a decade. Quite disappointed by recent decline in produce freshness and cashiers' service. A new cashier was very rude to me and blamed me for not listening to her when I asked her to repeat the balance in my gift card. She didn't seem to have patience or respect for her customers. This is my Safeway. When it was built, it was impressive. It's huge. It has about 14 checkout lines, and a self-checkout area with 6 additional stations. I like to do my shopping late at night, to avoid the crowds. I have now lost count of the number of times I've come here between 10pm and 1am, taken one look at the line for the single open register, muttered "You've got to be kidding me," and walked out. It's not uncommon to see 12 people in line for a single register at this time. Tonight there were 36 (THIRTY-SIX!) people in line for a single register. The 6 self-checkout stations were closed, as were the other 13 checkout stands. That's 19 unused checkout stands, with 36 people waiting in line for a single open stand. This kind of understaffing is unacceptable. If you're going to be open 24 hours, and you know that you consistently have this type of crowd at these hours, then you need to staff for it. Also, it may be due to the high volume of customers, but the self-checkout stands seem to consistently have 1 or 2 (out of 6) that are broken and closed. It's also very common to see 10+ people in line for the self-checkout stands. At the intersection of El Camino and San Antonio, and the boundaries of Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Mountain View, this is a high-traffic location. As the local population increases, and once the two giant hotels across the street are finished, the understaffing problem is going to get even worse. Every time this happens, I can't help but think that Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods and their "just walk out" store model is freaking brilliant. read more

The store is well laid out, but produce section is not that great. I saw mold growing in strawberry packets. Also, many things seemed to be out of stock. The cashiers here used to be nicer than another Safeway nearby, but recently I have had pretty rude cashiers here too. The presence of self checkout counter is a plus, but there can be long lines for these at busy times. read more

Be careful with the deli's sushi. There was a lot of selection to choose from. I had to pick the one that got me food poisoning. I was out for 3 days. I am pretty sure there were others who got sick. One of the newest, and biggest, Safeways in the Bay Area. The store is beautiful, and usually well stocked. Sometimes things do seem to run out and shelves are only restocked overnight. Great deli, good bakery, and an area to sit and eat. Unfortunately that seems to bring in homeless people and their shopping carts. The mens room has been pretty messy the two times I've gone in. Once a shopping cart was jammed in the hall and a man was 1/2 naked and using the sink to shave and bathe! The parking lot can get messy as it is not wide enough in the lanes or aisles and it shares a lot with the local Starbucks. Parking can get wacky! Go early or late, and avoid 3pm to 8pm...... read more

This is a nicer, more modern Safeway that replaced the awful one on California. It is better than that one. However the parking lot is a disaster. It is already hard to find parking and the complex isn't even completed. It is only going to get worse and speaks to a poor planning direction in the design. Products are often not in stock. I have been here at least 10 times already and NOT ONCE has everything I wanted been in stock. The missing items are always common grocery items and should rarely have stick issues if the place was run correctly. Products are placed in multiple places and it is often hard to tell IF the store carries them. It takes a lot of time to shop here and I am always asking someone for help finding something. read more
