Thank the Lord Baby Jesus this place closed at midnight, because my brother's in-laws live out in bumblefuck nowhere, 45 minutes into the woods from St Helena, and this was my go-to place for milk (so I can have coffee in the mornings) and diet coke (his family don't have such products in their kitchens). This place gets 5 stars for having awesome hours. But get a 3-star rating because it seems old and in need of a renovation. Also, there were boxes in some aisles and I had a hard time finding someone to assist me in the alcohol section of the store. Another negative thing is that the bathrooms were filthy and smelled bad. And now to end on a positive note: the tall kid working the register with the bleached hair was very friendly. He was a nice boy, and had a great sense of humor. So if you are in a pinch for getting groceries at the last minute into the night, this is a good place to hit up. But just don't use the bathroom. read more

I live in Lake Berryessa (40 minutes away) and my kids come here to school so this is where I do most last minute Shopping, It`s has convenient hours since they close so late, and even though It`s a smaller store It`s pretty well stocked, except for the produce sometimes everything is almost gone, but overall I can find what I need. Tostadas is almost impossible to find and the check out lines can get pretty long Specially at peak hours, Love their Breakfast burritos with egg whites and for less than $3 It`s really affordable. read more

Why is this Safeway so terribly staffed? It is usually impossible to find help and when you do the clerks are not very friendly. The shelves are never stocked, especially sale items. Wish I could give this a better rating... It doesn't matter what time I shop, the lines are ridiculous! They used to have a 'never more than 3 people in line' rule - that's not the case anymore! There are some nice checkers here, but there are also more with super bad attitudes! I feel like I'm bothering them when I check out. When I told one checker that the things he was saying to customers was not appropriate and was poor customer service, he replied 'you're in Safeway, we don't have customer service'!! While the store has a good selection and reasonable prices the check out is appalling. They never have more than three checkers working at one time. The "express" line has 15-20 people regularly. Go to Sunshine Market when in St Helena until Safeway stops being so cheap and hires the needed staff. read more

I have never experienced a wholly rude experience. Went in with 5 super friendly girlfriends to get groceries for the weekend and literally every single staff member we talked to had a rude attitude and made snide comments about our appearances. This is the dirtiest Safeway with the slowest service and least amount of products I've ever seen. I have yet to come across anybody who works here who is even remotely helpful or seems like they somewhat have the light on upstairs if you know what I mean. I live near here and try to avoid going here. Lines are always hideously long, not enough cashiers, and they never call for backup. I once gave the guy in front of me change to complete his total, then the cashier (who had the hygiene of a bum) proceeded to ask me for money, twice! This same cashier stopped scanning items multiple times to look at young girls walking by. I think they need to work on their background checks, as he creeped me out big time as a pedophile. Not to mention there is never anyone at the bakery and their deli staff is horrible. The red haired woman, I think her name is Melinda, made eye contact with me several times while I waited at the sandwich counter, then ignored me for 20 minutes and helped at least 5 people that came after me before I finally called her out on it and walked away. It's not the first time I've dealt with her attitude over making sandwiches. I seriously think she needs a new job as she is horrible at customer service. Maybe she should switch to bakery if the deli is so horrible. Which reminds me, why were there only 2 people working the deli on a five dollar Friday afternoon?! I would rather shop in Napa then deal with the obnoxious staff here. I think there is only one cashier in this whole place that I like, a nice woman with long gray hair (I don't know her name). For the wedding cakes (and the very friendly bakery manager): 5 stars for the wine country bride who's picky about taste/fillings and not about custom design. My point of view: I'm a big cake fan, and made a great tasting cake my #1 wedding priority. I did the normal tasting/proposal process with some SF specialty cake people, but had trouble finding a cake I liked enough to justify the hefty price tags (e.g. $700 for 90 servings). A wedding planner friend of mine suggested the St. Helena Safeway. I snubbed my nose at the idea for months, but finally swung by to try. The bakery manager was so helpful and the cake so delicious, I ordered and paid for it on the spot. Pros: - best tasting chocolate and vanilla cakes, hands down. - Because it's a grocery store, they can accommodate random filling requests if the necessary components are in the store. E.g. adding chopped toffee to my custard filling, no extra charge. Other options I considered were caramel sauce drizzled in the filling, any jams, any fresh fruits, crushed Oreos - you name it. If you're creative, you can get the same funky cakes that boutique bakeries make without the accompanying price tag. - You can add fresh fruit (sliced strawberries and sliced bananas in my case) for no extra charge. This alone was an extra $100+ at other cake shops. - Their custard filling is ridiculously amazing, and goes with everything. - 120 servings all in one great big glorious cake (no hidden sheet cakes here) for $350. Price of course depends on the style of cake you get, but all in this price range. Mine is a 3-tier stacked square with some basic swirly designs. - Very flexible with ordering & timing (suggested that you order two weeks before your wedding - craziness!) - Free tasting, no appointment necessary. Cons: - Only standard cake flavors (no chai tea or ginger salted caramel here). Chocolate, white, yellow, carrot, or sponge (or something like that). - Not flexible with cake design. They have a book with 10 pictures (some really outdated), and you choose from that book. They were able to make some slight modifications (stacking the cake instead of putting the tiers on pedestals), but not for you if you want some unique shape or intricate custom piping. - Fondant not available, just buttercream or whipped cream. - No delivery, so you have to have someone responsible you can ask to pick up the cake on your big day. Now, caveat: my wedding is in July, so it's possible they can still mess everything. I'll update my review then, but based on my tasting they are not to be ignored. read more

The sandwiches are terrible, bread was stale and the ingredients were not fresh, line was long it took forever and there was only 2 people in front of me, then I got my sandwich and had to stand in another line to pay for it. too bad too I work right across the street. Our go-to Safeway when we're staying in wine country. I love, love their produce, particularly their prices! We pay 4 or 5 times more for so-so stuff in Hawaii. So I load up on fruits and their organic salad mixes. The deli's good. Ditto for the bakery. Love their olive bread. Olive bread, with a deli soup, organic salad, sliced fruit and some estate wine is our standard dinner after driving in from either Arcata or San Francisco. We save Cindy Pawlcyn's for the next day! Have never experienced long lines or poor service. Pains me when I come home and shop at Safeway in Kona. $4.99 a pound for tasteless tomatoes? And more than double the price here -- on sale -- for the same salad mix, and it's not as fresh! read more

The deli at this location is the worst! I typically avoid this deli, because in the past they have always taken forever to make a sandwich, or have messed up my order. When I do go, it is during my lunch break, as I work in the area, so I have a limited amount of time. Today, I had to run to Safeway for a coworker anyways, so instead of going to both Safeway AND Sunshine Market, I decided to just get a sandwich at Safeway while I was there. When I walked in, just past 11:30, the place was almost empty. There were two women working the deli and two people standing in line. I figure it won't take too long, so I get in line to wait. When it is my turn, one of the ladies asks me what I would like to order. I tell her I would like a chicken artichoke sandwich and she starts to make it. While preparing my sandwich, she asks the gentleman behind me what he would like, not really sure why she did this, no one asked me what I wanted while I was waiting. I had to wait until no one was in front of me. Anyways, he orders the same thing as me. She continues making the one sandwich. When she is done she walks over to where the man is and hands him the sandwich. She then walks over to me again and asks me what I would like to order. Frustrated, I say "You already took my order." I wanted to go further into detail and tell her that she just handed my food to someone else, but she was just staring at me like a deer caught in headlights... At this point I do not have time to wait around for another sandwich. I still have to go grab my coworker's stuff and stand in line at the front, which in the time I've wasted standing in line at the deli for no reason, has become crowded as it is now around 12 pm. I say "You know, just forget it" and grab a salad instead. The entire time I was standing there, 6 people were in line, from the time I first stood in line, to the time that I walked away. This was by no means a busy time for them, especially considering the two people before me only ordered one sandwich. I mean I just can't understand how she could completely forget my order and everything, I was standing right in front of her the entire time! We made eye contact when I gave her my order the first time. As someone who works in customer service, and has to remember several things at once, I just can't understand this type of service at all. If this had been the first time, I would have been frustrated, but moved on, however this is the 3rd time I have felt their service was less than satisfactory. I will be going to Sunshine from here on forward, even if it is inconvenient. I would rather go somewhere that won't forget who I am in a matter of minutes. read more

This store is a mess. I've shopped here 3 years and it's only getting worse. Half empty shelves, not enough checkers, merchandise all over the place. Some of the checkers are downright surly too. I can't say I blame them. I've heard their hours have been cut and I know the corporate office moves them around. This is the only chain store in the up-valley area where you can maybe get a deal. The old hag that worked the customer service desk this morning (7.40 - 8.00am 02/12/18) needs to polish up on her customer service skills. I got a scratchie Ticket from the store and must have scratched the bit with the scan code too hard because it didn't seem to scan properly. So it took a while for her to check my card. She then proceeded to call in the younger customer service rep who informed me that I must have scratched it too hard, this I understood well enough, but I also understand that there is a barcode with numbers that you can punch in for when it can't scan. So after what seemed like 10minutes they were finally able to cash my ticket. Once the transaction was completed the old hag decided to tell me that the next time I shouldn't scratch it too hard (like she was talking to a child) I don't know where she learned her customer service skills from but from where I was standing she had NONE. If you don't know how to do your job and how to communicate with your customers then do yourself and the world a favor and quit working there. After I told her that in cases where scratches can't be scanned even without scratching off the scanning bit too hard I've always been able to get my ticket cashed by using the numbers on the barcode, I've seen it done in other stores to which she replied "well maybe you should go to other stores" then she had the audacity to mumble under her breathe, and the only bit I caught as she was walking away was "because we don't mind wasting your time". First of all if you have something to say to a customer say it to their faces rather then mumbling under your breath and walking away. I don't know how you got your job but lady you are in the wrong job, you could actually take a lesson or two from the other lady at the customer service section who apologized on your behalf. I have every intention of making a formal complaint to management about your customer service skills or lack there off. The 4 stars is for the other Safeway staff who are always helpful and make shopping at Safeway a pleasant experience for me otherwise. read more

It happened again......I was overcharged! I did get a refund but never got a coupon which is what their policy says. As usual, A lady and I waited for 21 minutes before we got somebody at the customer service area to help us! This is not the first time I have had to wiat for over 10 minutes at the customer service counter. NOT ACCEPATABLE!!! I just found out about the overcharge policy. Too bad Safeway is so dishonest and it does not provide the customer with whatever their policy says!!! I am beyond furious!!! I will see where else I can complain. a checker once let me know why the lines are so long. they purposely understaff the place so that lines are long,and they are,for sure. but i haven't had bad service, it's just slow.now i know why. you see,safeway wants to expand and add more parking. the city doesn't want to let them. so,someone figured out that, if enough people complained about the crowding there to the powers that be,they would be allowed to expand. i'm sure the staff does not appreciate being over worked,so that may explain some comments made about some of them.being tired can make anyone get cranky. i raised the rating from 2 to 3 stars when i remembered that the produce section seems well run.always fresh stuff,organic choices,clean and well stocked,usually. if the city lets them grow larger i think it would be more like the napa store, with proper staffing. read more

She did not say a word to me nor did she even look at me until I needed to sign for my groceries and she barked out "SIGN!" and gestured toward the machine. Unfortunately, the closest Safeway to me isn't one of the best. The lines are always long here. If you want to avoid lines, you should go at 5:00AM. If you go anytime between 7:00AM and 7:00PM, there are just a couple checkstands open and lines running back into the aisles. Though the store looks like it has a big floor plan, it always feels congested. It is hard to push one cart past another in the aisles. They are often missing items that other Safeways seem to have. Plus the staff isn't very nice usually. If I need help finding an item, no staff member is to be found. When I am just there for a loaf of bread, they follow me around, repeatedly ask me if I need anything, and act like I am trying to steal something. Also, their ID policy is completely inconsistent. I am 30 years old. Sometimes they ask for ID, sometimes they just ask for my birthday. Sometimes they just don't ask a thing. I will have to keep shopping here. There are no other supermarkets around with reasonable prices. read more

I have always gone to this Safeway to buy food, nothing crazy just food and things i need around the house. On Wednesday November 15th 2017, i called the Bakery to see how long they would stay open; they said 7pm. Great! My friend and I got the the Safeway at 6:30 just enough time to place an order for a cake to be made by the following day around noon. the service was great the lady Monica took the order and we were all set. My friend wanted to pay for the cake right away good thing we didn't! It happened to be tres leche cake. well the following day my friends boyfriend goes to pick up the cake thinking everything will be good. But NO! the cake was never made and when asked why it wasn't made all they said was they didn't have Tres Leche cake? like seriously you couldn't of called and told us you cant make the cake because of what ever reason and ask to see if we wanted to change the cake. No freaking call nothing and we show up looking like idiots not having a cake for a birthday and then needing to settle on a cake that they had there for who knows how long. When I think of customer service I think of everything I can do to make the customer happy. Even if that means making a dam call to inform the customer what the situation is. not Sorry we fucked up here let me give you a random cake and slap on some happy birthday words and call it ok. read more
