Problems: no self checkout anymore means I end up spending much more time standing in line just for one or two items. They replaced six self scanners with four staffed scanners. However many times only two of the scanners are open. I stop here because the location is convenient on the way home from work. But ever time I come in, I regret it. Next problem is the prices are not competitive. I do my weekly shopping at Frys even though it's way out of my way, because of the prices. Also the store experience is simply better at Frys. The employees at this Safeway are not particularly pleasant either. One example is the woman staffed in floral. Quite rude. Won't even say hi if you say hi to her. They have signs hanging in the store saying "friendliest staff"! Must be a marketing effort to change customer perception because in the 3 years I've been coming here, friendly is not how I'd describe any of the staff I've interacted with. Today, was no exception. The store itself its a great place to shop! Management is horrible Johnny is the store manager and stoped giving people hours due to COVID-19 which is completely understandable. Once he stopped giving hours he decided to tell people that had no hours that it was there fault and wrote them down for job abandonment. Mediocre at best. Prices are a bit high but in a 'hi rent' area. Just for U is a nice perk. Deli is a train wreck--how I miss my Albertson's and excellent staff and deli. Getting the slicing done is a laborious and tedious process. If items are on sale have a good amount of that product so you are not going to the back to get a new item. Guy working today was so slow I thought I was watching paint dry--and this was mid afternoon--I took two items--5 people waiting and I could not stand it any longer. Training? Staffing? This Safeway is nice and is close to my house, but after visiting this weekend I have to stay I am going to stick with Bashas. The prices are definitely higher on my normal items at Safeway. Also, I know Safeway can't really control this, but the vibe is not as friendly. The parking lot was packed, there were grumpy folks looking for spots. This is the same Safeway that my husband was at when a guy and his girlfriend walked up to him and offered him $5 to help get him a hair cut. My husband's hair wasn't even that long (maybe an inch or two). I don't know what it is that draws that type of crowd, but Bashas has a much more home-town feel. read more

About 3 out of every 5 times I find that I have been overcharged for something. Check your receipts carefully! But don't be surprised if the manager fights with you about correcting the price errors. I've even had a manager go take the signs off the shelf so I couldn't prove the price was incorrect. Now I take a picture of the tag or go with the manager when they're doing the "price check" to make sure they don't cheat me out of the shelf price! read more

Yuck. The store condition is TERRIBLE, there are NEVER any carts! Plus, I bought a cake and it had a hair in it, no kidding!! I am never asked for any help on the sales floor, which I was told is mandatory. The store manager (Rick M.) is TERRIBLE in accommodating customers in the store, and I have even seen him belittle his own employees, which helps the aura of this store so much more. I asked for a refund for my "hair-cake", because I noticed the hair after the lid popped off of the box on the way out of the store, and he said that it was, "Not possible because I had already taken it out of the store.." Are you joking?! The receipt even stated that the transaction was done 7 minutes beforehand!! He was quick to offer me a 50% discount after I threatened to call the corporate offices.. I took my 50%off-hair-included-birthday cake back, took it to Via Linda Safeway and THEY honored a new cake, PLUS my refund in full, after I explained what happened down the street of course. Terrible customer service. The selection of organic and natural foods is really lacking here. Safeway really needs to do an overhaul on what they offer. So much junk that it's almost impossible to find an organic option anywhere in the store. They don't have a section you can just go to find what you are looking for. And if you do find something on the natural side, it is over priced. The main employee that stands out here that I would give a five star to is Art. Everyone else is pretty rude and unhappy looking. If you ever have an issue or need to return something, they are not very accommodating and big sighs always follow, like you are doing something illegal by bringing something back that you were not satisfied with. I love this Safeway because it is so close to my apartment that I can walk there and grab something quick if I need to. It's great if I just need a few quick things for dinner or lunch. The club card sometimes has some great deals. I recently moved here from just outside of Chicago and this beats a lot of prices that I'm used to paying. The main problem with this store is the lack of commitment to customer service. Usually only two or three checkout lanes open, and long lines. Sometimes, it will dawn on them to open another lane, but a person with only one or two items may spend a lot of time in line. They have done away with the self-service checkouts, which I think is a bad idea. read more

Update on how terrible this delivery service is: Safeway gave me a $75 credit to make up for the fact that I got my last grocery delivery 42 hours late. I used it to place another grocery delivery and, amazingly, I've been waiting an additional 45 minutes for it outside of my 2-hour delivery window and it still hasn't arrived and customer service can't find my driver. I have always loved the Safeway bakery cakes over the years. Being an Executive Assistant, I have had to order my share of cakes for the few offices I have worked for so I am kind of an expert. *wink* But just recently, I experienced the BEST and most caring customer service I have ever dealt with at a Safeway Bakery. This particular Safeway on Frank Lloyd Wright and Thompson Peak went above and beyond my expectations! I needed a lemon cake by the next day but I didn't order it until the night before when it was after hours and it was pretty late. But David, the night manager, was awesome in listening to my story and reassuring me that they could help me. I needed the cake by noon the next day. David told me the Head Baker, Greg, would be in bright and early the next morning and to call to confirm we were all on the same page. I did so and Greg was so accommodating and said it was not a problem at all. When I got to the store to pick up the cake, Greg made sure that I had the box secure in my hands, because when I got there, I had other things to buy as well which made it hard for me to hold the cake. He was amazing! Such a sweet man! The cake was AMAZING and the entire office loved it! The birthday girl is also a good baker herself so when she said it was a great cake, I knew I had chosen the right bakery for my co-worker. Thanks again, David and Greg! I love that this Safeway is right across the street from my work. I like to walk here for a bit of exercise to get lunch. The deli is awesome. They have a sandwich bar that has these really great gourmet ingredients they will make a sandwich for you. For 5.49 it's not too bad and if you use your Safeway card you buy 7 get the 8th sandwich free. They also have premade salads and a hot bar as well. Very friendly, Alan who has made my sandwiches the last couple weeks is very friendly and does a good job. Bonus points the Starbucks is right next to it! read more

Wow I wish there was a way to put negative stars. I just had the worst customer service experience I've had in a long time if ever. They just lost a good customer permanently. I don't think anyone there will care but go somewhere else if you can. This is what happened. Lady walks away from Customer Service Counter carrying a small dog. I see people in there with dogs all of the time not wearing any type of service vest and I'm curious if the store determines whether or not they are service animals. The FDA provides that only service animals are allowed in food establishments. I politely asked the Safeway Customer Service Person: "Do you monitor whether or not those are service dogs? Safeway Customer Service: "No we are not a monitoring store. If you want, you can say something to the customer yourself." Me (getting annoyed they expect me to do something about it and not wishing to confront another customer): "Well I don't think I should have to do that. I'm afraid it would piss her off." Safeway Customer Service: "Well we are not going to do it." Me (Kind of surprised at how rude she is, she knows me, I've been shopping there for years and I was simply asking questions. I wasn't confrontational until I heard her responses.) : "So then what if I called the Board of Health?" Safeway Customer Service: "Well now you are pissing me off." I walked away, I will never set foot in the Safeway Store on Frank Lloyd Wright and Thompson Peak in Scottsdale again. I frequent the Starbucks inside this location and like to sit outside and drink my coffee on the benches directly outside of the Safeway. On numerous occasions Safeway employees sit on a bench right next to me and start smoking. Also, this location always seems to be out of shredded lettuce. read more

This has been my go-to grocery store for over 10 years as I live about a half mile away. However that's about to change! It looks like I need to find myself another grocery store.... For the past several months I've noticed a huge drop in quality and service. For example in the dairy section I often come across items (yogurts for example) that have long been expired (2 weeks or more). If you don't pay attention you end up purchasing expired products!!... Sometimes the non-expired items are hidden in the back of the shelf while the expired items are in front. Looks like the store is trying all it can to still sell these expired products!... I have pointed this out to an employee once and he didn't even bother removing the expired items! Buying organic milk is also a hit or miss. Sometimes they have some sometimes they don't. When they don't and I ask an employee if they maybe have some in stock in the back I usually get a negative answer. How can a grocery store be out of milk??? Depending on the day or time of day I've also noticed that items are in stock or not. I usually shop in the late afternoon between 5-7pm like most working people and often run into everyday items that are sold out. Really?? Is it really that difficult to manage inventory? Finally I've had a few instances where all my items don't get bagged and end up being left at the store. I've learned my lesson and inspect bagging during checkout so that items are not left behind. All the while making sure that items are being rung at the correct price as I've noticed this being an issue at times as well. Lately I've also end up with someone else's receipt a couple of times. How is this possible??? Don't employee get trained???... I agree that this store is usually clean and the Starbucks is a nice touch but in the last several months something changed (my guess probably with management?) and made this store sub-par and nowhere close to the level that it used to be. I have attempted to voice my opinions and concerns to management but seem to be hitting a deaf ear each time. It's a huge disappointment as I will have to go further for my groceries now and it probably will not be a Safeway as there isn't another one nearby! Ok guys. I buy my food at this safeway location practically every day. I know almost all the people by name, and that is supposed to be a good thing because if you know the people that work and live in your neighborhood it is supposed to lead to a good experience. Yesterday I bought a batch of buitoni cheese ravioli to eat with alfredo sauce and some spices like nutmeg and salt and black pepper. Ok this sounds like a good meal, but both me and my mother got the biggest episode of acid reflex you can imagine. Who knows how long this product was on the shelf. This is not a good experience for the consumer, us, and also it stains the reputation of the store which is supposed to deliver quality for its customers. Lets do better in this more complicated world. Just because people need to have a fast solution to their needs does not mean that we have to be cheated like this. This store can do better. read more

I have recently lost a lot of weight by eating healthy and fresh fruits and vegetables. As well as cutting calories and watching portions sizes. That being said I eat a lot of fruits and veggies. This Safeway has some of the worst produce I have seen in Scottsdale. If you want fresher fruits and vegetables go elsewhere.
