One of the better safeways.. Shorter lines and more self service options.

Just experienced the most unhelpful and rude "customer service" employee at this safeway. For months I have come early in the morning the snag balloons for various occasions for my company without issue. Today I came in and asked the register guy for help blowing up three small balloons and he sent out a psa. After 5 min on waiting I went back to customer service to ask for help and the lady (without saying good morning or hello) blurts out "what do you need?". After explaining I needed help getting some balloons she said no one comes into the department until 8 and that there are balloons all over the store I could pick out.... I didn't need a birthday or Mother's Day balloon so that was unhelpful. When I tried to explain that wasn't what I needed and if she could please help since I haven't had ANY issues before being helped before 8 am, she said "sorry" without meaning it and turned around. SO RUDE! Never again will I bother giving them anymore of my money. read more

Great Safeway! My big gripe is that they almost every time, no matter what day or time they only have two checkers max and zero baggers. So needless to say it takes forever to get outta there. Just your typical safeway. Large parking lot. I saw they have Amazon lockers and wish that the lucky nearby would have it too. In November (weekend before Thanksgiving, I saw that they have fresh cranberries for the holiday season! I also noticed they have a new small section of Asian frozen food like dumplings and taro ice cream bar (yum). read more

One of the newer Safeways and better than the closer Safeway at the Rivermark. So far, parking is better here than at the Rivermark too. This place is pretty big, good selection of foods. I wish Safeway would carry Chimay Blue so I don't have to go to Trader Joes or BevMo. Anyways, a good place to go when I'm in the area. read more

I like this safeway, though, I have been to other ones. Because of the Just for you pricing, and adding coupons on the card and some good sales, we were able to get our grocery budget from 120 / a week for 2 people to 35 / week for 2 people. Our receipt always has our savings from 40-70%. We go to this safeway instead of the one closer because it is bigger, there is always plenty of parking with good size spaces unlike the other one on El Camino in Sunnyvale. It is so convenient to shop here... they actually have good deals on some foods. I feel the safeway stores here are a bit underrated. I feel I'd rather shop here than at costco on many items ,and you don't need to wait in long lines at checkout or buy in bulk. They have a great seafood section. This is reviewing the sushi chef ONLY, and he gets 5 stars!! First, many are surprised that Safeway has sushi... and after an event I had, many were surprised Safeway had sushi this good! While I'm not picky, I can differentiate and appreciate different qualities of a sushi roll - - how tightly it's rolled (ie are any grains of rice smashed?), the taste of the sushi rice (vinegar, sugar, rice ratios), ingredients used, etc. The rice was seasoned very nicely (not too sweet, tart, or bland), and the rolls weren't too tight, and also not falling apart. Pretty perfect. The presentation was beautiful. I can't believe guests commented on that too! There was a lot of imitation crab, but in the chef's defense, I asked him not to use any tuna since there was a salmonella scare (of course, the day before my event) and not much information was known about the tuna distributor/source of the salmonella. He accommodated my request with ease and no one knew any different. I did some price comparisons as well and they were very reasonable. The value was definitely there. The chef was also accommodating about my pick up time and was very polite and gracious both while placing the ordering and picking it up. He had it done in time so I didn't have to wait at all. I couldn't have asked for a better experience all around!! And, I also know he makes the rice fresh each day (on a different occasion I wanted to order rolls asap and was told he had to cook more rice since he only makes enough on hand for the rolls he has out that day in the case (grab and go)). Quality does not seem to be compromised just because it's in a Safeway. Yet he was still accommodating and willing to make 40+ pieces within a couple hours (when adding in the rice-cooking time). With the many components of sushi and what comes with ordering a tray, it was 5 stars all around. I wish I had his name. I had many guests asking where the sushi was from, and I was very specific about which Safeway, because the chef makes a huge difference! read more

This is a newer Safeway and the one I go to now even though I am closer the the Wolfe and El Camino one. The aisles are wide and I personally like the use of the short aisles which causes less traffic jams. The people that work here are also very nice. Parking can get tough, but I usually park on the Pet store side. Having the self check out lanes are also nice as it also makes those big trips where we need to use the normal check out that much faster. The one thing I don't like is that it is sometimes hard tosee when exiting the parking lot onto el camino because there is usually a big rig parked on the street along with a taco truck. read more

While this is a nicer Safeway than older ones in the area, you have to be careful. MANY of the food items are expired. I'm not talking 1-2 days expired; I'm talking over a month expired. I've wasted so much money here when unpacking at home and find that the expiration date long passed and had to toss it. Be very careful in the refrigerated section! Things like cheese, kid's food, pasta, those smoothie blends near produce, and even bread! Especially bread. I don't think anyone in inventory is checking expiration dates! Trust me. It's bad. There are usually long lines on the weekends. Like 6+ people per line. They used to have signs up saying they'll call a cashier if there are ever 3 people in line or more, and well, they NEVER did, and they've since taken them down. The cashiers are fast, they get A+. The baggers are terrible though. They always put my bananas on the bottom, or fill bags to the point of breaking. They mix detergent with food. It seems very basic training is lacking. It's pretty clean and they do often have good prices on sales. I wish they'd get new stuff in more. Usually when I find something great, they replace it with the generic Safeway brand that's awful (and I've found full pieces of paper in my Safeway brand food... no quality control). Backstory: First online order from Safeway, and it's a REALLY bad experience which will never be repeated. I have a dinner party tomorrow night and need the food they were to deliver for prep tonight. Tonight: Called the store to find out what was going on, spoke to the unaccommodating and lousy manager. They have no record of the order, or lost it, and have no way of checking with the delivery driver since "he works for Safeway.com", plus they have no phone number for him in spite of him "returning to the store after his deliveries to drop off the carts." So they know this guy but have no way of getting in touch with him?? I call BS. The horrible manager offered NO HELP WHATSOEVER... Zero. Basically it was like, well, you're SOL. I will never ever EVER shop at any Safeway or related store again. I've been a loyal customer for over 20 years, and I am FINISHED. I'm writing the corporate office tomorrow with my cut-up Safeway card enclosed. You of course, are free to do as you please, but with many other choices, why bother when you know you'll get treated like this by management. read more

This store rates low as far as cleanliness, especially the Starbucks area. I had to tell the workers to clean the tables because they were all dirty and the workers were just standing around. Needless to say a few minutes later I noticed the manager of the store had been sitting there and did not say a word. I guess that tells you why the store is so dirty. I've also walked early morning and the outside front of the store is filthy. Garbage on the ground and tables. I think the health department should come check the areas customers can't see. Nice clean safeway store with ample parking in front. We had a very positive experience with the bakery section there. Due to religious or allergy reasons we avoid many of the ingredients commonly used in cakes (glycerides, trans fats to name a few). As a result we had hard times finding a suitable cake from stores. We can bake one ourselves but we needed the custom decorations for the big birthday party we planned. This is where the Sunnyvale Safeway bakery folks helped us. We first went into the store to explore what they had and what decorations they do on cakes. Sam in the evening shift was very helpful in listening to us and printing us the ingredients list so we can check. Also turned out they have a large collection of nice themes for decorations. We asked if they would take our cake and decorate on it. He says they may and he will check with his manager. We got hope that we may get what we wanted. We also looked at some alternate bakery shop (X Baguette) who had cakes with nicer ingredients. But turned out they use RUM as starter in all cakes. We avoid alcohol in food so that was big no-no. So we had to resort to baking our own from wholesome ingredients. We had two birthday parties back to back. And when we called day before the first one, Marlone, the bakery section manager was helpful and reassured that they will take our cake. They did a nic"Despicable Me" decoration on our supplied cake which my older one liked for the Saturday party. The most help came on the next day. We supplied the cake but I accidentally told them we want Minions on this one too. When I brought it home, my younger one told me she wanted Disney Princesses. We called Safeway Bakery if they could undo the minion deco and make the princess decoration on it. They kindly agreed and also did it on a tight schedule as it was a Sunday and we had only an hour before the party. They had lot of orders and were gracious enough to redo it very nicely. At the end they did not ask for extra money. Thanks Sam, Marlone, Brenda, Kathy, Judy and the decorators who did it. You saved our day. I would really recommend my friend circle to use your services. My whole family will be ever grateful. read more

Agree with the other users on the utility of this location. This was earlier at intersection of Old San Francisco & Fair Oaks Ave. Not sure of the business volumes but was convenient. Convenience apart here's my feedback on a couple of visits I made to the new location Store is clean and looks fresh - That's expected since the store is only a few weeks old Coupons: Probably since this is a new store coupons / offers don't apply here which is sort of weird. 2 * 1 Gallon of Lucerne milk qualifies for a discount at all other safeway stores except for this. The manager is clueless and argues its the same at all locations instead of atleast acknowledging and taking the feedback Bakery: I ordered a half sheet Transformers Tres Lechee cake The cake was ready in time.. perfectly done Alas.. My son's name is spelt wrong and they don't have anyone who can fix it properly at 6:00 PM Again the manager (this was a different guy) is clueless. Didn't have the courtesy to apologize. Was offering a couple of bucks off on the price but that does nothing to help cheer up my son. Declined his offer and got a lady in the bakery apply sort of a fix. I'm not a big time cook but it has a good variety of all the brand name packaged or frozen foods one would expect at the neighborhood Safeway. All food sections are moderately sized so I don't count on finding exotic or particularly fresh vegtables in the produce section but when I need a bag of baby carrots or apples for the kids lunches, I have no problem coming here any time of the week. Early morning is a good time to go and grab a morning joe at the Starbucks inside too. Otherwise, go in the afternoon before evening rush hour in the parking lot and one can pick up some hot food near the deli section if its almost dinner time. read more

I am writing to talk about the most Worst & Humiliating experience I had at this Safeway store at Sunnyvale, CA happened on Apr 2. around 8pm. I was shopping for grocery with my mother, we first shopped for grocery items then did self checkout. We were hungry so while my mother waited at starbucks inside, I went to the hot food section and bought few takeout items and ran self checkout again. As we were about to take off, a cashier (who I KNOW was right next to me when I was doing self checkout) and another man who seemed to be a manager came up to us and asked us for a receipt. I asked why and the store manager told me they just need to see it because the cashier "didn't see me making a purchase" Huh? I've told him calmly that I've paid for my items but he refused to listen and kept asking for receipt. (so he believes his cashiers words but not mine - and I've been shopping from that same store for last 2 years!!! ) Although I was already pretty upset, Fair enough, I handed him both two receipts I had for my first and second purchase. He looked at them and I thought it was over, they will apologize and my mother and I can leave. BUT NO! THE MANAGER than asked us different questions (that he initially didn't bring up when he first stopped us) like "Are these Really all the purchases you've made today?" and "What about water? did you pay for all waters?" - EXCUSE ME? why the f*** would I risk myself for stealing a LOUSY 99cent water? and Why are you asking these non-sense questions and nearly trying to FORCE ME TO ACCEPT I AM A THIEF????? SHOULDN'T YOU AND YOUR EMPLOYEE ACCEPT THAT YOU HAVE MADE A MISTAKE AND APOLOGIZE PROPERLY?? Long story short, one of cashiers and manager accused me for stealing (which CLEARLY proved to be NOT the case!), and they had the most unprofessional way of : first, handling the case and accusing me for leaving without paying for item but with NO evidence, second: manager believed the cashiers words but not mine-meaning he treated me as a thief, instead of customer and third:- AND MOST IMPORTANT- After showing a receipt with every items clearly written that is proving the purchase the manager just said "sorry" casually and took off! Now, having to withstand their accuse with my mother scared and humiliated next to me while other customers staring for 15 minutes to prove my purchase, THIS HAS BEEN THE MOST HUMILIATING AND SHAMEFUL AND SAD EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I've Never been accused for something like this before, Ever, and I've been using safeway ever since I was a teenager and spend around $70-80 for my grocery nearly every two weeks! But in return Safeway treated me as a miserable thief instead of proper customer!! I am ashamed and regretting all time and money I've spent on purchases from Safeway and will spread this horrific experience I had with others and make sure the other customers aware of how Safeway employees will easily accuse customer as a thief just because they think, without any clear evidence, and even considering it was a mistake, do not apologize in proper way because they don't feel a need to!!! --- The WORST part of this experience was when they realized they made a mistake they casually said sorry and took off - I asked them for their names but they ignored and took off! If it wasn't for my mother I would have followed them and justify them for their unprofessional and absolutely rude behavior!!!!!!! Worse Safeway I have been to by far! It's crazy how the employees Safeway decides to hire really make a huge impact on the store. I was charged incorrectly and was sent to customer service. Once in line I waited 28 minutes in line to be exact to receive help. Once there an older white lady helped me. The product I purchased was buy one get one free. So she she did a return to a total of 11.48 and then scanned the items one more time.... She ten said I owed her 1.50. The item total was six dollars so how can I owe u if it's buy one get one free?!!!!' I tried to explain to her but she wouldn't listen. I told her u r just being really rude right now. She went nuts. I just wanted my money back at this point but she continued to bitch. She then re did the transaction and she ended up giving me back six dollars like I had originally tried to explain to her. I was like see u did do it wrong. She just wouldn't admit it. I grabbed my money walked away and she continued to talk about me to the employees and the customers around. I turned right back around and I was like this isn't being rude?!!! Talking about a customer behind her back?!!! She then said something bak to me and at this point I was really angry. And yelled at her it's not my fault u have a sucky job! She's an older lady at that point in her life she should know a little bit about customer service. Don't be mad at me because ur like sixty and stuck working at Safeway. Definitely will be speaking to her manager and Safeway corporate headquarters about this. read more

The bakery section sucks. Not only are the workers rude, but the bread slicer always seems to be broken. Been there a few times in the last couple months asking to have my sourdough sliced. Answer is; machine is broken. Safeway has plenty of money to have that machine fixed within days. Still not fixed (or easy answer is that it's broken, if you are to lazy to slice it). I am sad to say that the service I was provided on Friday 9/13/13 was HORRIBLE. My daughter turned one on this day, so we picked up a Dora the Explorer cake, 2 packs of chicken wings, and an ice cream scoop. The day was completely great up until my husband drove off leaving the wings and ice cream scoop in the basket. We drove back and asked an associate if the chicken and ice cream scoop were turned in, but they were not. (of course not!) I explained what happened to the clerk at the customer service counter, and she had this annoying "I don't believe you" demeanor, so I immediately asked to speak to the manager. Like, why would I come all the way back to the store on my daughter's birthday to waste time. I explained to the manager that we drove off leaving the items in the basket along with the receipt, and that they could check the camera's and journal roll to verify what I was saying to be true. The manager left for a moment and came back to inform me that they checked and verified we made the purchase but that Safeway's policy is that once items leave the store, it is the customer's responsibility. Well why go through great lengths to check the camera and journal rolls then? Blah. I will not be shopping here again. read more
