Safeway - Grocery Near Me - Tacoma, Washington

I have never been so upset with the Customer Service I recieved today from Ivette R. at the 38th street Safeway. I went there to return an item (even called ahead to double check and had receipt) and was told she would not take it back and consistently changed her reasoning for it. When asked to speak to a manager she said she was the manager, but no where on her name tag did it display manager. She was rude and abrasive. I will not Ever go back to that Safeway again. She definitely is in the wrong line of work. read more

This Safeway is a block away from my house but I drive the extra few miles to Fred Meyer because this place is horrendous. The lines are always long, there's tweakers in the parking lot and you'll probably leave with a few scratches on your car from all the horrible driving in the parking lot. If you care about your mental health, go to Fred Meyer instead. read more

I only go to Safeway when I need a few things and don't want to deal with driving somewhere else (it's within walking distance from me). For one thing, this store is grossly over-priced - up to 4 times what you'd pay in stores like Fred Meyer or Winco! When I have the great displeasure of having to use their restroom, it's always kind of skeevy. And the lines! There never seem to be enough cashiers and the lines sometimes wind down the aisles! Plus, they make their cashiers go fetch liquor and cigarettes for people--even in the "Express" lanes--which holds things up even more. People should have to go to the Customer Service counter for those items (except there's never more than one person on duty there, either--sometimes nobody--so good luck with that.) But wait, it gets worse: This morning when my husband and I walked up to this Safeway, he spotted someone getting ready to "shoot up" in the carpark, and another person blatantly shoplifting. When we pointed these incidents out to our cashier/Dairy Manager, he said, "Yep, nothing I can do. It's a corporate decision." WTF? So the Corporation that owns "Safe"way now doesn't give a hoot about its employees' or customers' comfort & safety, or even about shoplifting? No wonder their prices are so high! The cashier also explained that they'd cut back on staff--presumably to pad their bottom line. And there are almost *always* vagrants hanging out in front of this store, smoking, loitering and sometimes panhandling. The only reason I gave this Safeway 2 stars is 1) they do carry quality merchandise, albeit over-priced and 2) most of their cashiers (some of whom I've seen there for years and become friends with) are generally friendly and helpful. Oh and yeah, it's convenient, except for the lines. That's about it! I hope the Safeway/Albertson's corp starts paying attention to these reviews and realizes what a piss-poor job they're doing and that they're losing customers. But they probably won't - because they just. don't. care. read more

I'm retired and have mobility issues The employees where very helpfull Kudos the meat dept. A young man named Christian knows the store inside out and went the extra mile. I don't write reviews often. I like this store. read more

Kagna is awesome. Not only have I seen the Safeway and proved over the years, the deli is to die for. I love the way she makes sandwiches with great care they always look so beautiful and they taste good too! Overall the worst Safeway in Tacoma.I've lived here my whole life and have never had service this bad.No acknowledgement of me standing there or anything.I waited in line for customer service for about 10 mins and the women at the front didn't seem to know what she was doing with the western union and the line was only getting bigger. read more

They store is grossly over priced. For a location in a less affluent neighborhood, they are gauging the locals. Fred Meyers has consistently beat Safeway in pricing, offers more choices, and more importantly, has faster check out lines. This Safeway has the business but to have people 3-4 deep in line day after day is just poor scheduling. Even though this store is close to my home, I typically drive further to Fred Meyer. Everytime i come to the safeway deli at around 5pm they always run out of chicken (either it be fried or baked) cant understand why they cant prepare for the influx of people that come to meet demand. I mean is it so hard to add more chicken to the fryer a before the rush. Sheesh winco always meets up with the demand and the lines are longer. Come on safeway. read more

It is the 4th of July so I called to make sure they were both open and not too busy. Just in passing I asked if they thought they would have any handicapped capable shopping carts. They replied they had sold all but two of them! Apparently it is no longer vogue to be handicap available. read more

This store is the worst. I hate going into this disgusting place. The aisles are too narrow, the lines are too long, express lanes never seem to be open and the shoppers....what a bunch of losers! Roseanne from the floral dept was very courteous and helpful. I wanted some blue flowers for the officer that lost his life while he was on a domestic violence call. They were all out. This review is actually for the Safeway Gas Station on 38th. Yesterday I had a rough day and went to get gas after spending too much time and money in Safeway. I wanted to use my fuel points but OF COURSE the card reader wouldn't read my Safeway card. They never do, literally never. So I went to go pay at the booth and told them exactly that. Luckily the manager was there who came out to the pump to help me, she used the scanner (who knew she had the magic touch) and it worked! She was SUPER sweet and didn't even hesitate to jump up to run over to help me. Her and the cashier were both very nice and accommodating. You don't find that very often in Tacoma! read more

I've been coming here for over a year and Every Time I come to this store the lines are ridiculous!!! They need more staffing or better management of daily customer influx. On the plus side, the staff is pretty friendly and I would give the store 9/10 as far as cleanliness and stocking. read more

I LOVE my Safeway! It's close and always clean. If I happen to be in the mood, there's a SBUX inside which is handy. They have a security guard at the front of the store or patrolling the parking lot (because it's kinda near the not bestest part of town....) so I always feel pretty comfortable going there later if I have to. AND yes, there are usually some interesting people there, but it makes for good people watching. There's always people in their jammies which is hilarious to me; I should invent some kind of game involving Safeway pajama sightings! The one abnormalty of this particular Safeway (if you have ever noticed) is that it is the only Safeway I think I've been to that only has one entrance. Usually, there are 2 ways to get in and out. I think it has to do with security...but that's just a guess....Anyway, I like the store. read more

Typical big grocery store. Nothing special about this place; they sell groceries and don't smile much while doing so. They do have a gas station that offers 3 cents off to Safeway Club members (membership is free), and that's about the best attraction of this place. Meh. read more

Where do I begin...well, yesterday was my son's b'day and I put in my cake order 4 days prior to the party...it was to be ready by Saturday at 7am party was at noon...i arrived at 9:45-10a.m. and lone and behold my cake was made...but IT DIDN'T EVEN LOOK NEARLY CLOSE TO THE PICTURE! IT WAS VERY POORLY DONE AND LOOKED AS IF THE GAL (WHO NAMED MARIA) DID IT AT LAST MINUTE AND IT LOOKED RUSHED...Well, the Saturday i picked it up the poor ladies on shift panicked and offered to remake the whole thing...stating it'd take 20-30 minutes...she started the cake and in process...cut out cardboard circles (yes, actual real cardboard) and placed them on top of my cake and proceeded to put frosting on top of it and airbrush it on...then instructing me to remove it before eating lol i said....ughhhhhh....no! Remake it AGAIN for the 3rd time....going on an hour and a half now...she remakes it and finally it's ok enough im content...they gave it to me for free in the end...and i then missed my bus to Puyallup to my own son's b'day party...ugh...never going there again! read more

I shop at this Safeway a lot and it's a decent grocery store. Today though, I went in to buy a couple of apple fritters because Connies Donuts was closed for the holiday weekend. I've NEVER had a greasier lump of overcooked bread in my life! After the first bite, I squeezed the thing in my fist and oil just poured out!!! Now a donut is a pretty basic bakery item. You should be able to expect a grocery-store donut to at least be edible but the grease-balls I got this morning will cause me to steer clear of the bakery here at all costs! If you can't get a simple donut right, how badly are you messing up the complicated things??? YUCK!!! read more

I spent ages trying to put an order through, I ended up having to get it through Instacart, not knowing they charge a delivery fee, a service fee and a tip! no wonder Amazon is doing so well. They had 16 of the 22 items ordered. I have never given a worse rating. If they want to compete with internet orders, they need a better website, and update what in available. read more

2:30 on Thursday and the lines are backed up down the aisles. The parking lot and the store are not full of people, it is slow check out or poor staffing. I asked a checker named Matt P. The front end manager to call for more help. He responded, "there is no more help". I persisted and asked if he had called for helper clerks or the produce department to help. He said no. The wait in line was 13 minutes, there were five customers in front of me in line and now that I have checked out there are six people in line. read more

I like this safeway. It is not the best one that I've been to, it is just very convenient. They have better selections at other Safeways, but this one is fine. It's always clean and cozy inside. There is also a security guard on post at all times. They also have very friendly and knowledgeable staff. read more

I gave this store two chances being a new customer in the neighborhood. Since I guess this is lower income then where most other Safeway are in Tacoma, they tend to stock old and outdated food items. Please remember to check the dates on all the items you are purchasing because I think these come from the better quality stores in order to sell them quickly. This is a terrible store. Very poorly managed. I feel sorry for the people that work here because it is not the fault of the people on the floor. It's the idiots that do not schedule enough help. The lines are always very long so you will waste a lot of time here. Also poorly stocked. Many times they are out of the item. This store got all of Albertson's/Hagen's customers when they closed so they are making tons of money and they don't deserve it because the service is AWFUL. Tonight the lines were the worst ever. I also got over-charged for an item but it's probably not worth the hassle of getting a refund. This is the worst Safeway I have ever been in. read more

If you want to have your car broken into while you're shopping and then deal with rude employees when asking whether there are security cameras and if they could help you, this is the right place for you!
