This has been becoming one of my favorite Indian buffets overall. My husband and I tried this for the 3rd or 4th time yesterday, for their lunch buffet, and it really met every expectation! The variety of dishes was awesome, and I love that they had plenty of veggies to offer. The flavors were impressive, and they kept up with refilling, which is very important to me. The service was exceptional, served with a smile. This place used to be Indian Palace a few years ago, which went out of business, so I hope this place lasts for the long haul! really ordinary fare. what's all the fuss about? we got there about half an hour before they close at 2 pm. the food didn't taste fresh and because they were closing for the afternoon, they weren't refilling the dishes anymore. the portions were sparse and looked very unappetizing. like i said, the fare was nothing special. just the usual chicken tikka, lamb vindaloo, saag paneer, basmati rice, etc. no reason for me to come back. i just wanted to try it because of the good reviews. no thanx. read more

I've been here twice, and each time was impressed with the lunch buffet. It is pretty reasonable ($11) compared to other Austin Indian restaurants such as the Clay Pit. My favorites would have to be the Chicken Madras and goat curry. The restaurant itself has an open atmosphere, and the waitstaff is attentive and polite. I'd definitely recommend this place for a lunch with friends or a reasonable dinner! read more

TL;DR: Best Indian flavors I've had. Mediocre naan. Would go again. Longer story: I went out for an early dinner at Saffron with one other person (like 5:30pm). The place had about three tables of groups of two so it wasn't busy when I went. The decor was simplistic. They could have done a better job painting the walls but that's not important. The owner or manager there was very very very attentive. He made sure we weren't sitting in the glare of the sun and that we were comfortable and happy the entire meal. He was great! We ordered a chai tea, chicken choila, the Saffron mixed tandoori grill, lamb pasanda, and garlic naan. Chicken choila: We wanted to try something labelled as Nepalese on their menu. This was really interesting. The flavors reminded me a little of wasabi and it was unique with chicken. I don't know if I would get it again but I was definitely glad to have tried it. Mixed tandoori grill: Came with paneer, a lamb chop, chicken, shrimp, and salmon. Everything was great. The Indian spices and the delicious smokey flavor came through. The paneer was so fresh. Lamb Pasanda: You HAVE to get this. It was great. Some of the best flavor I've ever had. Garlic Naan: I'd skip this. It was a little too chewy and the garlic flavor wasn't very well distributed. It was more like a pita bread instead of traditional naan. Overall, I'd recommend going here. The price is pretty normal for Indian food (more than you want to pay for a dinner you'd eat every night but not too expensive for an indulgence). You'll definitely indulge your palette with this restaurant. read more

Probably one of the best Indian/Nepali places in the Austin area while also being reasonably priced. The garlic naan is just exquisite - far from the typical naan you might expect, their garlic naan was crisp and light, yet also flavorful. There were actual bits of garlic that were cooked just enough to be soft while still retaining their pungency. I ordered the chicken tikka masala. Anyone who has cooked chicken before knows that it's really difficult to cook chicken just right (it's often either too well done or not cooked enough). This chicken was succulent, the sauce was fragrant, and it was clear that their tikka masala protocol had been thoroughly optimized. Finally, the staff try their best to make you feel welcome. They were always attentive and polite without being overbearing. Our table was wobbly and one of the waiters actually fixed that, which I'd say was going above and beyond. So if you're craving Indian or Nepali food and you find yourself in the Far West neighborhood or nearby, I'd say Saffron would be the top choice. read more

Friends had raved about this place and their lunch buffet, so I tried it. Meh indeed. I arrived at 1 -- restaurant closes at 2. I realize I wasn't early, but the buffet line was still serving. The entire time I was there, the buffet line was not replenished. Nothing. Not even naan. Nada. Just the same dregs. The flavors were okay, but nothing special. In fact, all the other Indian lunch buffets I've tried surpass this one. In addition, the dessert (not sure what it was ... kheer perhaps?) was barely sweet. Really disappointing. read more

Oh and I'm North Indian, so I know what's up We had the goat curry, saag paneer, and Darjeeling green tea creme brûlée. The goat curry was perfect and done in a lovely tomatoey stew, really reminding me of the way my mom makes curry. The creamy saag paneer was better than most I've had. Had a great dinner here last night at a reasonable price for the variety of dishes that we had, 4.5 stars. The server was probably the best part of the evening, he made helpful suggestions and accommodated our sometimes unorthodox requests (an ice bucket for our wine fashioned out of a large metal pitcher, etc.). The food was very good; we tried a lot of everything but the standouts for me were the chicken momos (off the entrée side of the menu), the tandoori chicken, and the chilly chicken. I'd order any of those again. The shrimp tandoori was flavorful but the portion size was small, so I'd probably skip that next time. Overall none of their portions are very large, so just know that you will want at least one entree and app per person if you are hungry. Their naan was pretty incredible, crispy and fresh made, and even though we ordered it towards the end of our meal, it was worth the wait. The BYOB policy until they get their liquor license is awesome, with no corkage fee too. I am secretly praying they don't get their liquor license for a long while. The atmosphere is a bit sterile, the color scheme reminds me of a hospital or school cafeteria, but it is clean and unfussy. I look forward to returning here soon and next time I plan to try the standard Indian dishes to see how they stack up. Tried Saffron for an early dinner just before Christmas. An hour later the place is filled with every version of customer from a parents out for a casual eveniing with the toddlers, to families and co-workers dressed in holiday party wear. Brussels sprouts appy is a must. Scallops melted in my mouth. The Saffron chicken lazeez was so flavorful I wanted more, along with more garlic naan. The mixed grill got, well, mixed reviews from my dining companion. The tandoori and lamb were well prepared but there was a mystery meat that was very dry and went uneaten. Service is especially prompt and you'll be attended to in some fashion by practically everyone on staff. That got a bit confusing as you're not sure who to ask for any needs but it sure beats the alternative. Very affordable and very filling. read more

I'll be totally frank- I have made it a personal mission to find Austin's best Indian restaurant, and I thought I'd always come up short. Saffron might have me changing my views though. At first glance, it's almost hidden in a nondescript strip mall and you wonder if it's going to be more "casual chat eatery" than dinner restaurant, but boy oh boy should you NOT judge this book by its cover. The menu is succinct, the lighting is fluorescent, but the food and service is off the charts. We had the paneer tikka masala, the malai kofta and the garlic naan, and were blown away by all three. The customer service is unlike any I've ever had at an Indian restaurant; the servers were refilling rice before you could even ask, bringing yogurt the second my friend reacted to the spice level, and just overall exceptionally attentive. Also, it's BYOB (it took me a while to figure out why every other group of diners just seemed to be leaving with their tote bags full of wine bottles LOL) The good, not great: My friends ordered the gobi manchurian (3/5, had better) and the mango cheesecake (more like a mango mousse) and definitely raved more about their entrées. The food here is pretty good and the staff are nice, but I have a hard time giving it more than 3-stars because the price for the portion you get (which is pretty small) doesn't seem like a good deal, and twice when I've visited my water had visible flecks of food in it. I came at opening time on the weekend and went with the 3 item option. I had the goat curry, the butter chicken and the saag paneer with some naan and a salad. The salad was pretty basic and was a self serve station while the remaining dishes were on a buffet style arrangement but were served for you on a tray. The Goat Curry was the most flavorful, but a bit overly salty. The chicken in the butter chicken was a bit tough and bland and the sauce was reminiscent to me of Campbell's soup out of a can. The saag paneer was seasoned well and flavorful. The naan was nice with a few bits of light char. Service was very friendly, and while the food wasn't bad, seeing the plethora of 5 star reviews raving about this place led me to expect something more than your average strip center Indian restaurant and on that front, it didn't really deliver. Also, I didn't look at the menu, but opted for what was ready on the line, so perhaps there was more variety there, but what was available didn't seem unique and I was expecting to see something I wasn't familiar with considering I'd never had Himalayan/Nepalese food before. I was hungry for Indian food so my husband reviewed the Austin options. He found Saffron and based on the feedback we decided to go last night. Saffron is now my favorite Indian food restaurant. We can't wait to return. They do such an amazing job with the unique flavors. Every item we experienced had a flavor that popped. Our favorite was the Masaladar Lamb Chops. The best lamb chops we've ever eaten. They serve a variety of naan. We ordered the garlic naan and the rosemary cheese. Again, the best ever!. Some work friends and I came here for lunch and were really impressed. The food is excellent and flavorful. The lunch special is a great deal: two or three entrees, rice, naan, a salad, and a samosa for under $10. And it's not crappy, cheap food--it's good. REALLY good. The interior is beautiful, soothing, and well-designed. There are a few hiccups that still need to be worked out, and the booth tables are just a tiny bit too low compared the the height of the seats (I'm tall, so this makes eating difficult), but this is a great new business right down the street from me and I cannot WAIT for them to start delivering. read more

Love this place, it's right around the corner and easily a new addiction! The waitstaff in the evening is small but you can very easily get attention. During the lunch buffet you can often find the owner who is kind and always open for a nice chat. The food is phenom! Their samosas have a beautiful flake to them with delicious traditional fillings served with a wonderful mint chutney, I constantly crave their tikka masala that has a fantastic creamy base with tender pieces of chicken. Honestly just the naan alone is enough to come back for, I've had their regular, garlic, and rosemary and cheese. I don't think I've ever had naan so good. The texture is so light and soft but with a perfect combination of a light crispy outer layer. I love this place and will be back very soon! read more
