This was quite the unique vegan coconut curry...zero sugar, robust curry flavor and whole vegetables (potatoes, carrots, zucchini, colored peppers). Tarka is consistently good, easy, and cost effective. And there's usually enough food for leftovers! I met a friend for lunch here last week. We were able to order quickly and find a seat inside at a high top. The folks were nice and friendly. We tried their new chicken & cheese samosas along with a lentil lamb dish and malai kofta dish with a side of garlic naan. There is limited parking very close to the restaurant but it's easy enough to find parking within a short walk in the lot. Tarka is also an easy place to pick up food if you want to eat in. Clay Pit has been an Austin staple for many years so it's nice they have been able to make similar food for those of us who like good Indian food but don't have the time or the dollars to eat at Clay Pit. Y'all, I love Tarka's korma, because it's like the creamiest and tastiest curry I've ever had. I love the basmati rice too. However, today I got their Beyond Keema to try it out and it was beyond salty. It definitely tasted like beyond meat, which is not bad, but the saltiness was way too much. It came with sweet yeast rolls. I like their garlic naan and samosas. Overall, Tarka is a good Indian fast food place that's affordable and clean, but it does depend on what you get. The chicken vindaloo (hot option) was pretty spicy! I also loved the garlic naan, but I've never been disappointed by garlic naan. From the outside and based on the customizable, almost modular menu, I was expecting this place to be more of a Chipotle style fast-casual place, so I was surprised to learn that the staff brings out food to the table. After reading this review the owner and I exchanged 12 emails instead of his asking the incompetent staff what happened and having them research it. Eventually he comped the total bill but seemed more annoyed than apologetic. In addition to not respecting my time he offered no incentive to come back. All he did is make a bad experience worse. I would give these guys a solid 7.5 out of 10. Really nice and convenient for a sit down "food out fast" joint. Simple counter order while you get a number and take a seat. My food came out HOT which is always appreciated. I got the Vindaloo with a medium heat. I SUUUPER appreciate the ability to choose your heat! I love curry but some places do now have this option and I end up either unimpressed with the heat or sweating uncontrollably... lol. This was a nice middle spot. Loved the added bell peppers and potatoes to make me feel like I'm not just eating chicken & sauce. My only negatives: - It didn't come with a mini naan. I had to order a separate naan as a side, which left me with way more than I needed or wanted. Also more money I wanted to spend. As good as rice is, a mini naan would be perfect for soaking up the sauce. - The Togo boxes are definitely not curry friendly. I had a little leftover that I wanted to save and the paper box was not the best choice for this kind of food. I don't always condone using hard plastics buuuuuuut when it comes to soups and curries it's almost required. This is our go-to Jndian restaurant when we're feeling Indian and want to eat in. Tarka was recommended to me by an Indian colleague as a place she was happy to eat! It's in a strip center so not a particularly nice going out place but the food is excellent. It's always ready quickly and comes out hot and fresh. This review is based on multiple visits. Some of our usual items are: - samosas (2 veggie filled samosas per order with delicious mint chutney) - garlic naan (you better be a garlic lover because they're potent!) - saag paneer (fresh tasting, not too creamy) - chicken tikka masala (good version of the standard classic) - gulab jamun (warm a bit in the microwave and they're so good) We've tried lots of other dishes, too. We get all of them medium spice, which hits a nice balance between my preference for the spicier side and my wife's preference for a bit less. Great first visit to Tarka! Family was visiting from out of town, and they appreciated the quick service restaurant style compared to much longer wait times around Austin. Food was very flavorful, presented well, and affordable for the large serving sizes! We shared a little bit of apps (chicken pakoras were our favorite), entrees (chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo were our favorites), and don't forget the garlic naan. Personally, the "hot" was ~6 or 7/10, and I would get that again compared to the mild or medium spice level. I'm not sure how high the "Xtra hot" would measure on my scale because I didn't try it on this trip, but I'd give it a shot if you want something especially spicy. Garlic naan - goes well with the tikka masala, definitely get this if you're getting a curry Basmati rice - comes with the curry.. there was a lot of this and it was so good! Chicken pakoras - honestly wasn't a fan, I'd skip this one next time Mango lassi - a mango yogurt drink that's an option at most indian restaurants. Always very refreshing! One of my favorite places. I would give it 4.5 stars. It has been very good to excellent every time I have gone, over 10 times but the last time I guess it was close to closing and so someone had scalded the Chai tea and refilled the cistern to get it thru the last hour. It was not very tasty. I LOVE the fact that they have Indian food but in good portions. I love eating a variety of food but since Indian food is my fave it is easy for me to go to a buffett and overeat. Then, I don't want to go back for a year. At work every other Friday we get to celebrate 'Free Lunch Friday' where each employee gets $15 and the clinic picks a restaurant. We picked this place for take out last time and everyone loved it! It has a variety of spice levels to accommodate everyone's taste. It is also great for individuals of all dietary differences. I was surprised they had SO MANY gluten free options and also many vegan options. If you are vegan and gluten free I would imagine it is probably hard to find many options but this place has a ton. I am vegetarian and they have many vegetarian options too! And of course multiple omnivore dishes as well. The portions are also fair which is nice. We got garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, shrimp vindaloo, and samosas. Samosas were amazing. Great flavor, crispy crust, and the mint chutney was awesome. My wife was very happy with the CTM, kept putting rice in the bowl to soak up all she could get. The shrimp vindaloo was legit delish--just don't pop a jalapeño in your mouth as you wonder if they are cooked or not. They're not! Nearly blew out my palate, but not enough to hide the yum! I mean, if you're already ordering a vindaloo you better be able to handle the heat. :) I look forward to going in person.
