    Tequila sunrise

If you're looking for traditional Indian Cuisine Saffron is the place to go! The servers were very welcoming! The atmosphere is dim and quiet, ideal for a date night. I tried the Tikka Masala medium spice and it was delicious. The rice it is served with is fluffy and light. The veggie samosas are flavorful and served with a cool, refreshing green sauce. For dessert I tried Kheer, rice pudding. This was my favorite! It is served cold and has a slight vanilla flavor. They also serve drinks such as the tequila sunrise which was fruity and enjoyable! I'll definitely go back for more!

A Bistro is defined as a simple restaurant and it is as advertised. Saffron has all of your Indian food hits with some unique specialties. Staff is friendly and fast with service. Ordering took time because they were out of all Indian beers and the wine I finally settled on was skunked which will be a loss of a star for them. It usually happens when bistro's don't seek much wine and they record a bottle without a special preservation stopper. Here's my three things: 1) Saffron has plenty of seating for large groups, and kitchen works fast so probably no problem serving a group. Great location helps with downtown lunch traffic too. 2) Prices are in line with all Indian Restaurants I have eaten at lately but an appetizer, main and glass of wine will put you around $45. 3) I had the veg samosa with a cilantro sauce that was fantastic 5/5. Main was my favorite Rogan Josh with lamb 4/5 (dry lamb and rice had toasted cumin but it didn't come through probably sat for a while). Good food!

Went here on a Sunday during the downtown Norfolk restaurant week. The inside of the restaurant was nice and calm. It was pretty empty inside, just a couple other people were there that day so the atmosphere was quiet and enjoyable. The $35 dinner menu came with a choice of drink, appetizer, main course, and dessert. I selected a mango lassi, vegetable samosas, butter chicken with mild heat, basmati rice, and kheer dessert. My friend ordered a mango lassi, chicken pakora, butter chicken with medium heat, basmati rice, and kheer dessert. The food was absolutely delicious and filling. After we had our mango lassi drinks and appetizers, we could only eat about 3 bites each of our butter chicken and had to ask for to go boxes because we were already so full. The food was very filling. Everything was hot and tasted made to order. The staff were all friendly and nice as well. Definitely happy this spot was featured for downtown Norfolk restaurant week. Will be going back again! My overall rate of experience: 9.5/10

    Garlic Naan

Ordered DoorDash lunch today (Saturday). I'm a huge fan of Indian food and often cook it at home. I ordered chana masala, paneer korma, and garlic naan. It was all pretty good, but not the best I've ever had. Almost lacking in key flavors that I would expect in those dishes. It would have been nice if there was some fresh cilantro included as well. The prices are a too high for non-meat dishes, but I'm not sure if that's because of the restaurant location. I would order from them again and try something else, but I'd definitely be including some special requests.

We walked in and was asked if we have dinner reservation, but they were able to accommodate. There's only one server working that night, not sure of the reason, and he was quite busy taking orders and seating people. The ambiance was great and cozy. We sat there for a good 15 minutes before asked to take our order. We had the lamb tikka masala, meat samosa, mix grilled platter, and mango lassi. The tikka masala was packed with flavors and the spiciness was bearably good. The mixed grill was a bit dry but packed with spices. The food was great but the lack of service was disappointing hence 3 stars for the food and zero for the service.

What a delightful recommendation it turned out to be. While the restaurant is modest in scale, it possesses a wonderfully serene and inviting atmosphere. We were greeted at the counter by an immensely warm and friendly cashier whose hospitality immediately set a lovely tone for our meal. To begin, we ordered a pair of their signature Mango Lassis, which were absolute perfection creamy, refreshing, and beautifully prepared. For my main course, I selected the Chole Puri, while my assistant opted for a dish of her own. While the portion sizes were perhaps a bit more delicate than one might typically expect, the execution and flavor profile were entirely satisfying and beautifully authentic. There is something truly admirable about an intimate, family-run boutique restaurant that manages to deliver such genuine warmth and comfort. It is an absolute gem, and it deserves nothing less than a full five stars. I shall certainly keep it on my radar for my next visit to Norfolk

When you enter, you order at the counter. If you are dining in, you choose where you'd like to sit, and your food is brought out on trays. They do use paper plates and plastic utensils, but again, it is fast-casual. They have a vegetarian side of the menu and then a side with meat. The only meat they offer is chicken. We got the Chicken Biryani and the Chicken Curry and garlic naan. We asked for it to be VERY mild. The flavor was all very good but I would not call it mild lol that's probably my only complaint - it was a little too spicy for me. I have been to other Indian places that offer American mild, medium, hot AND indian mild, medium, hot. I think they realize that they are able to tolerate a lot more spice! I would say my meal was probably "Indian" mild. I realize spice is subjective, and I am a wimp! They offer a variety of different drinks in their cooler and they have a filtered water station. They do not offer ice at all. Our food came out very fast but was still PIPING hot and fresh! The customer service was excellent. The gentlemen at the counter was extremely nice! During our meal one of the women from the kitchen came out to use the restroom but stopped to ask us how our meal was and to let them know if we needed anything. Very sweet people! I would absolutely recommend this place for a flavor, service, and If you like spicy!

It is a rare find indeed thoroughly approachable yet executing everything to an absolute premium standard. The exterior gives you a lovely glimpse of the full range of what this establishment has to offer, but the interior is where the true magic happens. It is absolutely gorgeous. The design is immaculately clean, featuring a sophisticated little bar area and wonderfully private, intimate seating arrangements. The atmosphere is entirely serene. Upon crossing the threshold, we were greeted with immense warmth by our waiter, who escorted us to a perfectly situated table. He was exceedingly knowledgeable, taking the time to elegantly explain the daily offerings, which I found to be a thoroughly professional and welcome touch. The hospitality was simply top-tier. To commence the luncheon, I ordered a beautifully prepared Strawberry Lassi, which was absolute perfection crisp, refreshing, and decadent. For my entrée, I naturally selected the Butter Chicken, easily the crown jewel of the menu. When the fare arrived, it was a total triumph. The rich, velvety textures and perfectly balanced spices were exactly what the afternoon called for. Between the flawless service, the stunning ambiance, and the impeccable cuisine, I am completely charmed. It was a thoroughly successful detour, and I shall most certainly be returning

No regrets there -- that naan understood the assignment. When I try a new Indian spot, I always go with butter chicken as my baseline. I ordered mine "medium hot" because I like spice, but I like flavor more than I like questioning my life choices while sweating through dinner. The flavor was great, portion of rice was HUGE (like... rice for days), but the spice level? Let's just say it politely waved at me from across the room. Next time, we're going full "Indian hot." My friend got the chicken tikka amritsari, which came in one of those elite takeout containers with the little compartments -- we love organization. It looked amazing: chicken, veggies, sauce, the whole situation. He ordered "Indian hot" and... same story. Delicious, but not exactly setting off the fire alarm. He enjoyed it, just wished it brought a little more heat. Only downside: dinner prices for takeout were a bit on the higher side. But overall, really good food -- we just learned that next time, when they say spicy... we need to say spicier.
