I shouldn't really complain about Saffron, but I will. It's affordable and quick and the food is decent. I wouldn't say that it's awesome, but it's ok. I'm a fan of sauce. When I have spaghetti, I want lots of pasta sauce on it. Same with my pizza. I love ketchup on my fries and lots of it. When I have drunken noodles or pad see ew, I want to taste the nice flavors the sauce has to compliment the noodles, veggies and tofu. Saffron doesn't put too much sauce on their noodles and what they do put on it isn't super flavorful. The spring rolls are AWESOME though. Try them. I've had a couple of their soups and have enjoyed them quite well. I can't say that I've ever walked away from Saffron angry at my meal, but I don't usually walk out saying that it was super-good either. I haven't eaten at Saffron in a while, but since the hubby offered to pick up dinner after his nearby dental appointment, I asked him to pick up the order I'd call in. After I confirmed dinner with the hubby, I called Saffron and ordered us a half order chicken combo with peanut sauce, pad see ew with beef and fried rice with beef. I really wanted yellow curry, but the guy taking my order said they were out. Sad face for me. When the hubby arrived home, I unpacked the bag and was excited to eat. So excited that I took a minute to Instagram my dinner, select a flattering filter, post, then I dove right in. Unfortunately, dinner last night was a huge disappointment. Everything was D-R-Y and flavorless. The chicken was so dry, I overcompensated for the dryness by dipping it in my peanut sauce, which was the best item from Saffron. The half chicken combo also comes with white rice and a small Cambodian salad. I usually like their salad, but last night's salad was just okay, there was nothing fantastic about it. The white rice was not good either, you can tell it was sitting out for a while, because it wasn't hot and fluffy, it was sad and brittle. The fried rice lacked any flavor and was dry, we only ate a third of it and didn't bother packing up the leftovers for today's lunch. The pad see ew was the final disappointment in last night's dinner. Dry and flavorless. What happened Saffron? I used to like you, but the quality of your food took a turn, but not for the better. When there are so many other wonderful Thai joints around town, you'd think Saffron would step up its A-game and put some love in their dishes. We were sadly disappointed and vowed to explore the better Thai dining options that leave us wanting more. Honestly, I am not sure what the 1 and 2 star reviews are talking about. I am inclined to believe they are blatantly and intentionally giving low stars. Listen, this place isn't the best Thai place in San Diego. But, they are consistently good, they use very fresh veggies, and the service is very quick! There is plenty of seating inside and outside the only shitty thing is parking, but if you are used to this area with Vera Gelato, the Pub, etc then you already know this and take it into account when you go. Dont let negative assholes persuade you. Give this place a try, you will find just one more cool place to eat in the eclectic area of SD. read more

After chatting with a friend about going to Lucha Libre, which she totally agreed I should not skip out on this trip, she also pointed to me some other places in this corner of the town that will not get a feature on the Food Network, but has some damn good grub. Saffron is one of these places. Saffron is an uniquely little Thai eatery. The look and feel almost reminded me of the food places I use to eat back home. It's not glamorous, the menu does not feature some kind of mascot, what Saffron does have, is a open kitchen with honest folks doing honest work cooking some incredible food. The menu is simple and to the point. Tom Yum, Pad Thai, chicken, beef, etc. Simple menu, simple ingredients, simply incredible. I quickly ordered a Chicken Pa Na, and while I was busy taking pictures my food had already arrived. The taste of ginger and the sweet glaze, with the thick rice noodle and sliced chicken breast, with sprinkle fried scallion flakes, all combine into a very simple but traditional taste. It didn't take me but minutes to shove these in my face and into my stomach, but I have no time to digest! I have one more place to go before it closed. Eslam spicy wide noodles and Vietnamese noodles are just 2 of the many tasty dishes we have enjoyed at Saffron Noodles and Sate. Right next door is Saffron Chicken...both at 3731 India Street. One side is dine in, the other side is take out. The noodles are very tender and fresh in the noodle dishes. The portions are on the small side, but the prices are reasonable. The chicken salad rolls are always excellent, and we like the choice of dips for the salad rolls. The decor is very basic, so we don't go for the atmosphere...we go for the food. Their catering is excellent! We have used them twice for ordering food for our parties, and for a reasonable fee they delivered the food, very fresh and hot, to my house! Everyone at the party LOVED the chicken salad rolls with dip, and people are still talking about those. When it's in season, the sweet rice with mango is an excellent choice for a party as well as the noodle dishes, such as Pad Thai. I have priced various places for parties, and the overall price, including the delivery fee, is very reasonable for Saffron. It would have cost us a LOT more to use various other places for parties. Just remember if you are dining in, the portions are a little small, so we like to add the salad rolls to our order. We like the chicken salad rolls best, but the shrimp salad rolls are good too. Peanut dip is good, and the sweet chili dip. We have also tried ordering the half or whole chicken to go, but although the chicken is ok, we found it kind of plain, and we would prefer to order an entree and dine in. It's summertime! Time for picnics on the beach and concerts in the park. I often have intentions of whipping up a beautiful picnic basket full of homemade gourmet goodies. But let's face it, instead, my day usually consists of a hectic morning, dropping the kids off camp, bee-lining it to the office; working all day, screeching back to pick up the kids and try to make it to the park or beach before the concert starts or sun sets. But no worries, bcse I can just make a call to Saffron's and voila! Instant picnic dinner that's quick, inexpensive, easy, healthy, and everyone loves! Like last night, picked up the whole chicken w/ jasmine rice, Cambodian salad, 5 sauces, a large cucumber salad, and box of 3 shrimp salad rolls. Had a delicious outdoor "picnic" out on the back patio, and served 6 (3 adults, 3 kids) for just about $5 each. Can't beat that! Came on a Sunday night before closing maybe my first mistake. The girl at register recommended the Chicken says it is what the restaurant is famous for. Figured I couldn't go wrong so ordered an entire chicken. I think they must've given me a chicken that has been sitting in the oven all day. The meat dry, skin was unedible, and meat was unflavorful. The sauces were good but that was it. The white rice was also dry. I could tell because I saw the worker scraping it out from the bottom of the pot. Stir-fried chunks of chicken breast with tumeric, red bell peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, jujube dates and dried chilies with jasmine rice. I love this restaurant! It's a must-stop for us whenever we go to San Diego. It's just a walk up counter, but they have plenty of indoor and patio seating, and they bring your meal to your table. The restaurant is always very clean, even the bathroom. Everything I've ever ordered has been delicious. I usually either get the Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, or the Rad Na. These, and most of their dishes, are available with beef, chicken, or tofu. I'm vegetarian, so I always get the tofu option. The portions are always big enough to make 2 meals, and the prices are very affordable. I wish I lived closer to San Diego, because I'd eat here all the time. It's also located just 1 exit beyond Old Town, so it's super convenient. Lots of street meter parking, which is free after 6pm. I highly recommend a trip here. read more

Spring Rolls that were frozen, blasphemy!!! How hard is it to roll up fresh vegetables and meat? Mexican fast foods have been making burritos from scratch for years. STOP being lazy and STOP the shortcut of pre-prepare them, icing them, and then charging premium prices for subpar food. Saffron Chicken has a reputation of one of the first places in San Diego to provide Thai cuisine. It pioneered ethnic Asian food in a world still stuck in meat and potato. But over the years, it has rested on its laurels, and failed to update itself. The food taste is pretty much on cruise control in gear ONE. In it's golden age, it had one or two celebs stopped by to ooh gaga over its menu choices. however like those celebs, Saffron has passed her prime. I am amazed people are still willing to put up on the high prices and bad parking. Sorry El Indio, i know lots of people use your parking lot illegally to dine at this dump. With so many thai choices in the area, i must say do yourself a favor and trek somewhere else for your thai food fix. But if you are going for nostalgia or how thai food should not be, and are happy to toilet your wallet, by all means visit Saffron. My mom loves Thai food (meaning only pad thai), so my bro suggested this place as our meal before departing SD. I can't believe I spent two days down there and didn't get one bite of Mexican food. My bro suggested I get the sate, so I got the two skewers for $9, mom got the pad thai for $8 and my brother got the beef one...can't remember what it was called. The portions were what we called "small," but JC made a good point in that they weren't really small, we're just used to huge portions. My chicken skewers weren't dry, but they weren't moist. The chicken was just chicken with some curry type of flavoring. The rice was just rice, and the cucumber/Cambodian salad was good, but too spicy for me. The peanut sauce was good, but wasn't any different from other peanut sauces. All in all, I wouldn't go back to get the sate, but since the grilled chicken is what people rave about, I might just go back to get that. Or I might just try El Indio next door. What happened?!! I used to frequent Saffron in the late 80's and early 90's, when customers used to be able to catch a glimpse of the owner, Su Mei-Yu, cooking in the kitchen and directing her staff. She would often take the time to come out of the kitchen to greet her customers and check to see if the food was to their liking. Su was a very sweet lady, but I never see her anymore. The prices were comparable to other Thai establishments, but the food tasted significantly better than the competition. I would drive the distance to eat here and was willing to tolerate the long waits for a decent parking spot back then. How times have changed for the worse. The past few times I've dined here, the food was bland and quality was poor. I kept hoping for better the next time around, thinking to myself, "Maybe they hired a new cook who just needed a little more experience under his/her belt." Being a big fan of anything coconut, I tried their new Pad Chai-Ya, which was described as a 'Southern twist on Pad Thai. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good either. The dish was again bland, but spicy, and the shrimps were few and undercooked. My Smoked Salmon Roll Special fell apart, before I got a chance to get it in my mouth. Although free, the water didn't taste refreshing like it used to. I believe they used to add mint and lime to the water. I wouldn't be surprised if it came straight from the kitchen sink nowadays. This restaurant used to be my favorite but quality control and quality assurance seem to be lacking lately. The 1st delivery order I made, I specified peanut sauce for the eggrolls and I got chutney. Forgiven. 2nd delivery order, they did it again and they even forgot to add the Chicken Larb which I paid for. Worse, the chicken fried rice was described with veggies but found a few cilantro herbs and 4 pieces of corn kernels. It was also flavorless so I had to "cook it" again with garlic and veggies to resemble a pseudo Thai fried rice. They didn't put utensils in the bag either. Paging Manager, can you please hire someone who can double check the quality, taste, and order before sending them out? SO DISAPPOINTED!! This place is very cool, delish, pretty healthy and super convenient- right off the 5. The Vietnamese noodles, chicken/veggie curry stir fry and spring rolls are consistently great and they have a few beers and wine. $9 for enough 'healthy' food to be full - I usually add a spring roll or so to one of the entrees. Parking can be a little tricky during dinner but if you can score a spot on the street on the other side of the El Indio parking lot (right next to the 5) you are good to go. Where's the saffron? Call me crazy, but I was expecting to find chicken roasted in a medley of spices, served atop a bed of saffron rice. But alas, it was roasted chicken on top of white rice, with a side of peanut sauce. Overall, the food was fresh, healthy, and tasty, but a far cry from anything saffron or indian/middle eastern inspired. There are a number of Thai style noodle dishes, along with traditional soups (Tom Yum) and variations of fried rice. I haven't tried them yet, but suspect they veer more towards little Bangkok in LA than Thailand. The menu also features a "Cambodian salad" which consists of a small container of a green salad in rice vinegar. So while it's good, it adds to my confusion of what this place really is about. If you're not picky and just looking for healthy light, inexpensive food, this is the place. read more

I love the food, 5 stars all the way. Really tasty, reasonably priced, and great flavors. However, they never EVER get my order right. It's amazing how consistently wrong it is. I'm writing this review because I picked up a to-go order, and actually asked them to go over each item to make sure it's correct, before a long drive. They went through and checked it all off. Sure enough, it was STILL wrong, missing an entire entree! I just don't know what to say. They still charged me for it, just didn't give it to me. And this is the third or fourth time in a row they left something out or substituted something wrong. You have to open each box, and check your order right there. It's that bad. We were in the area to check out another spot. But, since that place wasn't serving what we were there for at that time and because we didn't want to waste the money we had just fed into the meter, we ended up at Saffron to try out their Thai food. There's metered street parking nearby. But, when there's a lot of people out, it must be very difficult to find a spot. There are several tables inside, a few outside, or you can get your order to-go. The staff was nice. Once you order your food at the register, they'll give you a number and take your order to you once it's ready. For our drinks, we ordered Thai Iced Teas which weren't that good. Didn't taste like the normal Thai Iced Tea that we're used to. It tasted a lot more like milk than anything else. For our entree, we shared a plate of Pad See Ewe with Chicken. They don't ask for your preferred spice level, but they do have spices available so you can add it yourself. We try this dish out at every Thai restaurant we go to and this one just wasn't up to par... not even close. The taste just wasn't there. There wasn't much of a taste and it was a bit on the oily side. Adding spice helped... a little. The noodles were topped with some crunchy stuff. Not sure what it was, but we weren't a fan. For dessert, we ordered Sticky Rice with banana wrapped in banana leaves. This was just OK, as well. Nothing great, but not horrible. Could have been warmed up a little more as the bananas on the inside weren't completely warm. This dessert might be better if the rice was a little softer and there was an option to top it with some condensed milk or something. Overall, based on what we had, food was edible, but not really enjoyable. Doubt that we'll ever be returning - unless we start seeing reviews stating that their quality of food has had some major improvements. read more

Saffron is located in the hot-to-trot neighborhood of Mission Hills. If you drive, expect parking to be a nightmare and meters only allows a maximum of 30 minutes. As an alternative, there is a trolley stop not too far away. My feelings about Saffron are mixed. The staff are very attentive/friendly, they offer interesting daily specials, and overall the prices are good. Saffron is best known for their chicken, which is a bit perplexing to me because it really isn't any better than (dare I say) El Pollo Loco. The flavor is ok and the skin is usually soggy rather than crispy. What I do like here are the sides such as the organic red rice and the Cambodian salad which is like an asian coleslaw. They also offer a plethora of dipping sauces like peanut and a sweet chutney. Ascetically, this location needs some help. The tiles look old and dirty and they have an unsettling fly issue. It's annoying trying to guard your food while attempting to wolf-down your chicken. read more

I used to come here often many years ago but since moving to east county I hadn't been here for at least three or four years. While waiting for my food, I googled why the Chihuly art was gone and that's when I discovered that Su-Mei Yu had sold the business. I ordered the vegetarian egg rolls, the vegetarian Tom Yam soup and vegetarian drunken noodles. The egg rolls were not crispy but soggy as though they'd been sitting around under lights for awhile. They were bland and flavorless unless dipped in the sauce. The soup was interesting but not what I expected. I can't say it was great tasting. I liked that the noodles were packed separately from the broth in what I assume was to keep the needles from overcooking. I good idea but the noodles were a sticky clump by the time I got home and stayed that way after being added to the broth. The drunken needles were not as I remember but they were not bad. They also weren't memorable. When I first started going to Saffron 20+ years ago, it was delicious, fresh tasting Thai food. Now, I can get that at several local Thai places near my house and it tastes better and more authentic than Saffron does currently. I was disappointed in my meal and the prices are significantly higher that other Thai restaurants. It's a disappointment that Saffron is not like it used to be but things change and it had a great, long run. I will not eat here again because there's much better Thai elsewhere and if I'm in the area, I'd rather have Rubicon Deli or El Indio. read more

We love the show, Savor San Diego, and have been dying to try out saffron restaurant for such a long time. SADLY, we set our hopes too high. My fiance and i are so bummed this place isn't what we expected. Upon entering we were suprised at how filthy the place seemed. The walls were disgusting, baseboards & floors dirty. Station where you fill your cup with water was absolutely repulsive!!! I just don't understand. .. a woman so notarized for being a great chef, pictures of the owner with celebrities covered the walls. .. you'd think there would be more effort put into the appearance and cleanliness of her restaurant. If this was any random hole in the wall, i wouldnt even rate it... just never return, but the simple fact that it is owned by such a amazing chef really made the experience so much more disappointing. We figured the food would make up for the lack in cleanliness. .. sadly, no. The brain food i ordered was bland, chicken dry. I had to drown it in chili sauce to get any real satisfaction. My fiancés plate was better, #19, had a bit of flavor.. but still nothing to boast about. We sat there eating in disbelief and disappointment.... we love her show, the ideas, recipes, the fact that she keeps things local and gives ma and pa's a platform. I would have thought there would have been more sense of pride in her own restaurant. ... afterall how can you showcase others when your own isnt up to par. A little disappointed in tonight's visit! I come here at least every other Monday after my daughter's soccer practice for the whole chicken special. Well today the chicken wasn't even cut just the whole chicken was placed in the ToGo container. I've been going to Saffron for well over 12 years and it seems like ever since Su-Mei sold the restaurant to Karina's the quality of the food has gone down and the prices have gone up. And now it appears, the customer service is going down hill as well. Today I ordered online for takeout a SIMPLE order of "steamy trees" (broccoli and one chicken sate) and a small Cambodian salad. That's it's, pretty simple right? Well, they forgot to include the side of peanut sauce (which is one of the reasons I ordered the steamy trees) and gave me their cucumber salad instead of the Cambodian salad. Of course I didn't notice this until I got back to my office, then had to get back in my car and drive back down for them to correct my order. I got a barely audible "sorry" but they seemed more annoyed than anything. Good customer service would have been to offer me something for the inconvenience, like a free thai tea or egg roll or something. Ordered to go a whole chicken, cucumber salad, white rice, Cambodian salad, peanut sauce, a spicy sauce and salsa. All of it was excellent and tasted freshly made. All employees were friendly, masked up and the lady who gave me the food double checked my order as she bagged it and read it back to me. Seems to me most of the disappointments come when ordering curries and noodles. It's been 15 years since I've been here as I have just come back to San Diego and the food I received tasted just as good as it did 15 years ago.
