    Large bowl with salad base
    Leslie B.

I am a huge fan of poke. When the trend became popular in San Diego about 10 year ago, I was eating poke at least once a week. Though Ahipoke is definitely not my favorite poke restaurant in town, I am grateful that it is located in my neighborhood so I can get a poke fix. This is your typical poke restaurant where you can choose your base (salad or white rice), your size, your proteins, sauces, and toppings. I have been going to this place periodically for the past five years or so. I notice that the service is where better when the man who is presumably the owner is working. There have been a variety of young workers there, most who didn't seem much to care about the service. I will say that I'm not a fan of various fish mixtures that they have, so I usually choose a combination of salmon and tuna. The fish doesn't always look as fresh as at tome other poke places, but it has never tasted off. I generally have enjoyed my meal. I don't like that they charge for avocado and do not have masago. All in all, this might not be my first choice in poke places, but it is decent, conveniently located, and can satisfy a craving.

Out and about we spotted this poke place after running a few errands. We made a good choice. Ahipoke has fresh selection and fantastic options. My hubby opted for all salmon and he was very pleased. I went with tuna and shrimp. The sauces elevated the protein and the portions were generous enough for us to leave satiated and content. The tropical juice blend was yummy and now I wish I had opted not to share. Looking forward to a future visit.

Came here before the gym with my gf looking to eat something healthy before we workout but was left with disappointment. We had 95% topping and sauce but had to do a scavenger hunt for any proteins and we got a large with an extra scoop. Came out to 20 bucks after military discount. The service was fine he was polite but nothing super unique. The discount brought back from 2-3 stars

First time here and I will definitely be returning. All the ingredients to make the bowls were super fresh (and we were in there late night on a Monday). There are plenty of options for everyone. The portions are generous and the service was friendly. The price point is great for what you get and how fresh everything is. We took it to go, but the inside is your typical fast foodish restaurant. Looked clean and lots of tables.

No. The fishy smell when we first walked in made me a little uneasy but my husband wanted to give this place a try. Some of the ingredients didn't look fresh and the wasabi was a super unusual green play dough color. I became extremely concerned when I went to use the bathroom. The disgusting and intensely strong scent of urine in there was so overwhelmingly strong - it literally made me gag. I then go to stir my bowl up. Took one bite, spat it out and then threw the entire bowl away. Why? The tuna was extremely fishy. Did not taste fresh at all. Some of the mixed greens had that black slime on them. Rice was super dry. Thinking of how they could let the bathroom get to that point of filth and deem it acceptable for paying customers was incredibly concerning then tasting the ultra fishy tuna made me not want to take a chance on their level of care for food safety. My husbands tuna was also very fishy and while he ate a bit more than I did - he ended up throwing his away as well. While they may follow all food safety guidelines to a T and I'm not saying that they don't. But I didn't like the fishy taste of the bowl so I couldn't eat it. I used to manage a popular poke shop in the past, I love poke and have eaten at many different shops in Hawaii, other parts of the US and in Canada. This was the worst poke I've ever had. We would not go back and I highly recommend they hire someone to do a deep clean and disinfecting of the bathroom and return on a regular basis to keep it clean. It was the most disgusting smelling bathroom I've ever been to in my life. This place gives the vibe of someone who was excited to open a restaurant and put a lot of care into it in the beginning but as the years went by and business slowed - so did the effort and care. Not saying that's what's happened - but that is the impression I get

Food is delicious, very refreshing. Not much to say about the ambiance, but is comfortable to eat in.

Ordered a large bowl of 3 varieties of tuna with their house sauce that is just ok. The place is clean and the service is good. Perhaps a different sauce next time.

    That's some beautiful ahi.

The quality of the tuna here surpasses most poke bowls around here, just look at the picture (even the popular one in OB). You have your choice of type and sauces, and a wide variety of toppings. My favorite toppings are green onion, red onion, mango, crab, seaweed salad, furikake and ginger. They also have Thai tea, which I love. Plenty of parking and friendly owners.

The found is great, but the process is painful. When we got there, only one person (possible owner) was working the counter (no big deal). He was at the register checking someone out and came over to us to tell us that the card reader was down and they were only accepting cash; we said no problem. We placed have our order, and between making the two bowls, a second employee came out to finish making them and the first employee went back to register - he then came back a few minutes later to tell us the card reader was down and confirmed we were paying cash and then asked to see out cash. Showed him we had cash and he let the other employee finish making our order. We get to the register and the employee who asked to see our cash gives us a total. We pay him in cash but did not get our change; the employee said they do not have any cash on hand. One of our bowls was more expensive than the other (no extras were added), when asked about it the employee said "that's the price". The prices listed do not match other menus and marketing materials, and in four different places we found conflicting prices with a $2-$4 difference depending on which item you looked at. Overall, the food was excellent, but staffing and management is a bit disastrous.

Not my usual place for poke but was in the area and craving poke so decided to try this place out. I like that they had a lot of options and there were some things that's I haven't seen at other places such as corn, pineapple, furikake, and eel sauce. The staff here are super nice. The lady in front of me had never had poke before so the guy assisting her was super helpful and offering suggestions and explaining what some ingredients were. The guy who helped me was also very nice as well and super generous when scooping that the lid couldn't even fit on! Overall a good option if you're in the area and want poke. I did also order their guava drink and that left more to be desired. Maybe I was looking for a guava nectar type of beverage and this felt more like just guava flavored water.

I had debated whether to reserve upstairs or downstairs and ultimately chose upstairs and I was happy with that decision for the two of us, as it was a bit more relaxing and I liked the decor. There was however, a large table of about 8 people in the center of the room that were quite noisy. Downstairs definitely had a more 'hustle bustle' atmosphere with large booths and a long sushi bar. (There is also some outdoor 'Covid' style seating). We ordered sake, a couple of sushi rolls and negiri. They were kind enough to supply a complimentary birthday ice-cream dessert with a candle. Service was very attentive and as we passed the sushi bar on the way out, staff behind the bar waived goodbye. Parking: We were able to park near First and Laurel streets for free on a Saturday afternoon. A very classy sushi place. I definitely recommend a visit for a special occasion or perhaps if visiting nearby Balboa Park or the Old Globe Theater. Helpful?

Booking was easy through their website. When we arrived around 6:30, and there were still a handful of open tables so reservations may not always be necessary, but it's probably still a good idea. Our server was phenomenal and really elevated the experience. She gave great recommendations and even let us sample both the Cabernet and Merlot when we couldn't decide on a bottle of wine. We ordered a variety of dishes: * Spicy Edamame: very flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side so be warned if you're sensitive to heat. * Fire Fire Roll: light and fresh fish, but the seared salmon flavor didn't really stand out. * Orange Roll: also light and fresh, but I didn't really pick up the citrus/lemon zest element. A bit underwhelming compared to expectations. * Salmon Belly Nigiri: very fresh and a favorite at the table. * Crab Roll Special: generous portion of fresh crab. * Yuzu Cheesecake: served with three spoons to share. It tasted like a classic cheesecake, pleasant, but I didn't really get a distinct yuzu flavor. The space is cute and conveniently located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Overall, the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. While the rolls themselves are fairly simple and not especially standout, everything tasted fresh and the service was excellent, which made the experience enjoyable.

We were first to enter and it was clear immediately that omakase is this restaurants institution; delicate lighting that highlighted the bar that separated diner and chef, clean lines everywhere, and just overall a beautiful place. The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. The service and partnership between the sushi chef and the wait staff was fantastic and every interaction was well thought out. The appetizer wasn't my cup of tea, but the sashimi, nigiri, grilled fish, chawanmushi were really good. The assortment of fish (at least for this season) wasn't my favorite (featuring sardines, mackerel, etc.) when I would have loved some yellowtail and salmon belly. We ordered a negitoro cut roll a la carte because we were still a little hungry - this was super tasty as the quality of the tuna/toro is top notch. For dessert, they had 4 flavors of homemade ice cream to pick from. The sesame was incredible and the roasted green tea really good too. I feel like most of the omakase I've been to have 2-3 seating for dinner, so all the customers for that time arrive at the same time and everyone is at the same point of the omakase. At Soichi, it seems like each party has their reservation at a different time (4:30, 4:45, 5:00, etc.) so each group is at a different part of their meal, not to mention some parties that ordered a la carte or a different omakase menu (sushi only option, etc.) As a result, the chef is bouncing around working on a bunch of different items, and we had to wait quite a bit for each of our nigiri courses. The whole meal took 2.5 hours. We also felt less of that group vibe with other parties that is common in other omakases. Overall, we still had a really lovely time and glad we got to try it!,

There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

We ordered takeout, and the food was packaged well!…read more We ordered the: -Sashimi champloo ($31.95): This had twelve pieces of prime cuts of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and chef's choice. Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.

We knew it was popular and it was recommended to make reservations well in advance which we did. When you get to the hostess stand on ground level, she greeted us warmly and directed us to the elevator that would take us to Lumi. Once at the top, you're greeted by the Lumi staff to check you in. As you get to view the roof top, there are lots of tables, a strategically placed bar, some fireplace tables, comfortable seating, a live DJ, and beautifully done murals and deco. Very tasteful! The food was amazing and so fresh! If you don't like sushi, Lumi has a lot of dishes that would also accommodate your palette. Appetizers, sushi, and drinks were all great. Prices is a little high but keep in mind that you're also paying for the experience! The staff were all friendly and our host Becky was so sweet and attentive! She checked in on us regularly and gave us great recs! Highly recommend!
