We have eaten here twice. The first time was horrible. The service was poor and the food was hardly edible...the yum yum Sauce was not Yum yum. Lol However we decided to chalk it up to being newly opened and decided we would go back after letting it be open longer. The service was still extremely slow and the meal seemed to take forever, but the food was much much better! And the yum yum Was edible. Food Fantastic; Service Horrifying To start off on a good note: the food is absolutely delicious, our waitress was decent, and the chefs are entertaining and talented. The thrilling preparation is practically the definition of "dinner and a show." However, our pre-dinner experience nearly RUINED the entire night. We arrived three minutes after the restaurant officially opens for dinner and was told there was a 45 minute wiat. 50 minutes later, when one of our party went back to the hostess counter, we were told an additional 30 minutes. A little less than 2 hours after arriving we were finally showed to our table where we would wait without drinks for 10 minutes. The staff offered no more than a curt and forced apology and the manager would not even acknowledge me when I tried to discuss our mistreatment. There was a blatant lack of concern for both our time and enjoyment. I cannot remember the last time I was treated with such abject indifference and will be sure to inform all of my friends in addition to local consumers. Our party of five would not have been upset in the slightest at being informed upon arrival that the wait on a Saturday night was an hour and a half. Nor would we have been so irate if we had once received a sincere apology or even check in from the manager acknowledging the very clear mistake on the part of the front room servers. Sagano of Fenton is one of the worst managed, staffed, and organised restaurants I have ever been to. read more

Very disappointed! Love going to Sagano in Brighton, and I have always had great food. First time at the Fenton location, and the last time. When the nice waitress brought out our entrees, she then told us they were out of rice. No substitutions were offered. Then she brought our bill, and we were charged THE FULL PRICE! My meal was even OVERCHARGED! I understand this is a new location and occasionally an important food item will run out, but to charge full price for all the meals missing rice? Picture eating beef teriyaki without rice. A lonely plate with a few pieces of beef. That's it. So very disappointed. read more

This was a horrible experience. We went to this restaurant because I work near the one in Flint and go often and the food is great. NOT THE CASE HERE! There were 4 people in our party and 6 in the other people we were seated with. The food was in eatable! 4 bites in the lady in the other party looked at me and said "how is yours?" I've been to the Brighton Sagano many times, and wanted to try the new location! the food was delicious as usual, it's a really fun place to take kids or a medium sized group. It might be because this is a new location - but the service was not good. The hostess was very rude to us, and the waiter seemed to not quite understand the menu at all. Also, the waiter pouring the water spilled water on me three times. Not a huge deal - but definitely not ideal. It may get better as they go on, but that's the only reason I'd be leery of returning in the early months. The chef was great though! read more

We have visited this location before and had average service. We visited yesterday and were told by the greeter there would be a 20 minute wait. We took a seat in the bar area and began to wait. The wait was closer to an hour- much more than the 20 minutes we had been told. My brother tried to order a drink at the bar and the greeter/bartender started to take his order and then turned around and walked away from him. It was another 15 minutes until he was able to get a drink from the greeter/bartender that was running around on his cell phone at the same time he was making drinks.Once at our table, we had a very nice waitress. That was when my husband found what appeared to be a receipt in his soup. He alerted our nice waitress right away and she assured him that it wasn't a receipt- it was a label from one of the containers of food in the back. This did not make him feel better. She offered him another soup , and he was not feeling like soup any longer, and declined. The rest of our meal went as planned for a visit to a hibachi grill. At the end of the meal, we were brought our bill. My husband asked if he could talk to a manager about what had happened with the soup. A lady then came out and very coldly handed him a new bill and said "Are you the one who had something in your soup? I took 15% off." She turned around and walked away. No apology or even care to know about the incident. We all just sat there confused about the customer service. After the visit we will not be back anytime soon- between the wait time/bar situation and customer service I have no desire to spend money there. read more

Sagano - Japanese Near Me - Fenton, Michigan

First of all, the cook was phenomenal. He was funny, flirty (jokingly), and entertaining, I seriously hope he doesn't lose his enthusiasm for as long as he works there. Cooks like him make going to a hibachi grill totally worth it. The food is standard for pretty much all hibachi grills and was good. The chicken was a little overcooked but I think it was because he was determined to get everyone to catch some of the chicken in their mouth. One guy was so good at it our cook even took on the challenge of going across the entire room and launching it into his mouth. The servers, however, were undeserving of a tip if you ask me. I'd never NOT tip a server, I know how much they rely on tips, but I wanted to make sure the one who was literally slaving over the grill and showed more concern about doing his job got the tip he deserved. Our server brought us our drinks and then that was all we saw of him until he brought us our bills. Another server for another table brought us our soup, we didn't even get our salads, and those of us who ordered steamed rice (which again requires the server) didn't get it. It's like he COMPLETELY forgot us. How do you forget a whole hibachi group in a small restaurant like Sagano? I asked another worker walking by if he could perhaps help me in getting my rice (I assume you just gotta go into the kitchen and get a bowl of precooked rice...). And he treated me like I was having a big deal out of nothing I was polite and calm about it. But it was a part of the $23 meal I ordered... When our server came back another person in our group confronted him about his absence and all of the stuff he forgot, to which he responded "Yeah... I got caught up in other stuff." Maybe he was having a bad day, maybe the restaurant in general was having a bad night, I don't know. But to miss 2 parts of our meal and the only effort of consolation is to offer to give us our salads to go once we've all packed up and are ready to leave... Damage has been done, buddy. Protip to servers: there's two things you never offer to give to customers to go (unless requested)... it's french fries and salads. Neither hold up on a trip home and in the fridge. read more

Slow service. Decent food. The food was good once they got moving. We arrived at 5:00. Once our party was arrived it still took 10-15 minutes just to be taken to the table. There were about 5-6 employees standing around doing nothing but no chefs. Then we slowly got our drinks. Then slowly got the soup and salad. They only have two cooks so if more than 2 groups show at the same time you will be waiting! It's just like every other hibachi style place except slower. I LOVE saganos, but I do not recommend this location. Certain servers are not friendly at all, they rush out the soup and salad before the table is even full, so if you are first sat you end up sitting there waiting for the meal. The chefs could use a little work, they overcooked the chicken fried rice last time we were in. Again, I suggest saganos, but not the Fenton location! We waited over 30 min at the Hibachi table before we had to get up and let someone know we were waiting. After the cook served everyone their order. He shut the grill off and two people did not get part of their meal so he had to cook their meat after everyone else was done eating. Management never came over to apologize and gave us a 4.00 credit. The cherry on the top was when the cook cleaned the grill while we were all still eating! NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE. We went to the Fenton location on 12/22. We were told it was a 30-45 minute wait which we decided would be ok. After 50 minutes, they "tried" to seat the 4 of us in the only 3 remaining seats at the Habachi table. Wasn't going to happen. No server/bartender working the bar area, so no drinks while waiting. There was 1 chef working all the Habachi tables, with each table seating 10-12 people. We ended up leaving and ultimately had a great meal at the Fenton Hotel. read more

UPDATE: It's my birthday today and I tried to order carry out lunch Hibachi today at 1:15, they don't close for lunch until 2:30, and I was turned down AGAIN. They said they had too many big orders and couldn't take anymore. I decided to give it another try because when I can actually get their food, it is so good. Extremely disappointed in this place. I would give this place zero stars if I could. I have only ordered carry out from this place, and it's never a good experience. The first time we ordered from here I was told 45 minutes. I walked in after about 50 minutes to pick my food up, and they were crazy busy. That's not a problem for me, but after I paid, the hostess didn't say anything about when or if it was ready. (All three of them were very unfriendly) I was watching them frantically try to put orders together on a table and they kept opening carry out boxes, and had probably 20 containers of soup sitting out. After a half hour of waiting one finally called my name and gave me my order, which was 2 hibachi chicken. I get being busy, but you need to let your customers know what's going on. Anyways, we got home and everything was COLD. I tried calling back to talk to a manager and was put on hold by a hostess, but could hear them talking about me on the phone. There was no manager and no one to talk to. We decided to try today to get carry out lunch, I called an HOUR before they closed for lunch, and they turned me down and said they had to many orders and couldn't take anymore. I'm sorry, but if you want your customers to return, you'll figure it out. Stay open later for lunch if you have to. Stopped in here for a quick lunch with some friends the other day. The service was swift and the food was quite good. Prices are lower in the lunch menu. Sagano should change their name to "So gonzo"... I am sitting in my vehicle typing this after just "attempting" to patronize their establishment, along with 4 other colleagues who were on their way to meet me for a business lunch. My experience was this; I entered by myself as the ONLY customer in the place, a few minutes ahead of my colleagues. I immediately noticed 3 employees standing behind the sushi counter socializing who looked at me like deer in headlights when I entered immediately splitting up going into "work mode".. one was obviously the sushi chef, the other was slurping a bowl of noodle soup while standing, and the other was a young hostess. I was greeted while standing by the sushi bar and I asked "do you have lunch specials"? her reply was "only for the bistro" or hibachi over there (pointing through a wall). I said "I am meeting some others, where shall we sit?" She again pointed to a dark corner saying those are our tables if not having hibachi... There was a nice row of empty table right near the window on a beautiful Spring day so I asked "May we sit there" her reply was a surprising "no you may not as I said the tables are back there"..... I shook my head in obvious disappointment and walked out. They made zero efforts to acknowledge. I was in business attire, and am appalled that a business can remain in business treating guests in this manner.... I recommend taking your appetite and business ANYWHERE but Sagano. Who doesn't want sushi on a Friday night?? Well, we knew Saganos is open until 10:00 PM on a Friday night, so we ventured there to get some of that fantastic sushi I have been enjoying at the Flint location since 2004??? Not exactly sure on their year of establishment. Well, we arrived at 09:25 pm and the gol' dang doors were locked. Now I've worked in the restaurant industry before and have sat a table of 15 one minute before closing time. It sucks. Anyway to continue the joke, we called Saganos to alert them that their doors were closed and they informed us they had seated their last table.....so I scratched out 10:00 pm and wrote in 9:30 pm for their closing time. I kid of course, but I played that out in my mind. Anyways by this time we were leaving the parking when the young lady offered to raise the velvet rope and let us in. When questioned about speaking to a manager, one was mysteriously unavailable. At that point, after a short conversation, she abruptly hung up us. This was on 1/2/2015. A.) There better have been one hell of a party in Fenton they had to get and possibly Channing Tatum waiting for her B.) this is the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my short life. Get it together Saganos in Fenton. You just forced me to take all of my business for the rest of my God given life to Sushi Zen in Brighton, because they care about me.....and they told me that in birthday card. read more

I was looking forward to our meal at Sagano because I'd been a repeated visitor to the Flint and Brighton locations. However, I will not be visiting the new Fenton location for a while. We were told the wait would be 20 minutes, but ended up waiting almost an hour. There is no bartender, only a bored host, and the "bar" is only a few wines and mediocre beer. But I think the worst part of the evening was when my brother found something inedible in his soup. We thought it was a receipt but the waitress tried to reassure us it was a "label". Then she offered to get him more, as if it wouldn't all be labeled out of the same big label soup pot. The soup was otherwise never acknowledged by Sagano staff, which is quite embarrassing for a reputable chain. When we mentioned it at the end someone was sent over- although her title was never announced. (Another waitress perhaps?). "I gave you 15% off, that ok?" She said shortly, without apology, as if we were dirty drifters looking for ways to get discounts on hibachi dinners. read more

We knew this place would be packed for the first few months so waited until February to try. Apparently, the staff has still not learned how to manage the volume, or they are purposely lying about the wait time. Similar to other reviewers, we arrived with our young child in the early evening and were told there would be a 25 minute wait. No problem, we'll get a drink while we wait. Took 15 minutes to get the attention of a bartender. Should've left then. 45 minutes later, they've seated one table and we are still clearly 30-45 minutes away from being seated, let alone eating. Host is completely unconcerned and unapologetic to all of the people waiting far longer than represented. 4 year old is starving and cranky. Mom is starving and cranky. We give up and try Fenton Hotel, but by now it's 7 PM and everyone is running a 45 minute wait. Ended up eating at Big Boy. A memorably bad family night out, thanks to Sagano. Will not be back unless reviews show their management is markedly improved. On the plus side, the decor and location is nice, thus 1 extra star. read more

Well, this was just bad from the start. Saturday night in the middle of dinner rush we have bus boys rolling napkins at the table next to us. Then 3 different waitresses try to take our order. I order sushi my husband orders a dinner. The waitress can't explain anything on the menu our appetizer comes and my sushi( which is falling apart on the plate) we wait and wait for his dinner which never comes but they bring us the bill three times! The third time I call uncle, I go to the cashier and say I just want to pay the bill! They charge me for everything except my husbands food! The food is awesome, we generally love Saganos. We've been going to Saganos since the time that they were only in Flint, its great food and fairly consistent. Generally speaking the service is spectacular, we've introduced many people to Saganos, particularly at the Flint location and everyone was a fan. I am from the Fenton area, so I was really excited to see a Saganos go up in Fenton. The food is great at the Fenton location, and its no different than any other location that I have been to. The environment is cozy, the lighting is good, it's a bit more linear in it's layout than Flint or Clarkston, which is fine. With that being said, the service is hit or miss. We have ordered takeout a couple of times and the accuracy is not very good. We have been shorted on things a few times, and also when I've asked for a couple more of their side sauces they wanted to charge me... When you pay 30 per meal for take out, it should be a big deal to get a couple more 2 oz sides... Very petty. The other service issue is with one of their cooks. They have one cook whom if you take a kid in with you between the ages of probably 5 and 10, he will nag them till they are so embarrassed that they'll never want to go here again. Some people might sadistically enjoy that, but it's annoying. It ranges from saying something to the kid and saying "huh, what's that -insert name that is purposely not your kids name-" the entire dinner, to finding another kid of the opposite sex and saying that your kid has a crush on them and then doing that the rest of the service. It's sort of funny, but it gets stale pretty quick, then it just all gets annoying because it drags on and on and on. I've experienced it myself and seen it happen to others, and it always ends in exhaustion for the parent(s) and the poor kid. Don't get me wrong, I love the entertainment at Saganos, and I understand this style of dinner service, but I don't care for the antagonizing and it's certainly made me avoid eating there. read more
