Clearly the best restaurant in Custer. The food and service were so good that we ate there three out of the four nights we were in Custer.

Stopped here with a group of friends for lunch one day. We were greeted/seated quickly, a waitress soon showed up to take our drink orders, she gave us a few to look at the menu, when she came back I asked what their soup of the day was - it was a southwest style chili. Her description of it sounded really good, so I ordered the Swiss Chicken sandwich, which comes with a cup of soup, so I tried the chili. Both were really good. The chili had a little bit of a kick to it, but not too much. Great flavor and seasonings, and the sandwich was done just right and had great flavor. One of the others in our party also had the swiss chicken sandwich and she said hers was really good. A couple of folks in our group had the buffalo burger and both said it was really good. A couple of others in our group had some of the salads and all commented the salads were good. I would recommend and return if in the area again. The atmosphere and decor is kind of chic in style, but I loved that one the walls they had photos of national parks then and now - side by side years ago and current. It was interesting. read more

Amazing Food! Classy place, comfortable feel. We spent the day at Mt Rushmore and Custer St Park and were in shorts. We were hungry and wanted something good to eat. Great food and great service! They were almost the only thing open one cold day in March, so the wife and I stopped in. I had the buffalo burger, which was very tender with a ton of flavor. My wife had the BLT, which was loaded with crispy bacon and excellent lettuce and tomatoes. For dessert we had the creme brûlée and a chocolate thing I'm not sophisticated enough to pronounce. Sage Grill (as it's often called by the locals instead of the full-out Sage Creek Grill) was recommended by the lovely hotel owner of Calamity Peak Lodges. It was on my top Yelp Trys for my Wild West trip, and for a good reason. While I was strolling the paths of the Gold Rush, Custer's glam with small town feel won me over, however, Custer wouldn't be what it is to me without Sage Grill. Sage Grill is partially a wine bar with a great selection, but I gotta complain that it creates a tiny bit of disappointment that they had no local selections. All those rolling Black Hills and no vineyards?! I got over it quickly because as I enjoyed the debated decor which I found quite pleasant and as wonderfully simplistic as the menu which changes weekly and/or very often. Prices are a bit steep and unexpected ranging between $15-22 a dinner entree but once it's served the fresh flavors allow you to forget about your shrinking wallet. One tourist warned me to avoid fish at all costs while in South Dakota (mind you, this was coming from someone who lives in sea-side Seattle), but Sage Grill turned that upside with their Pistachio Encrusted Halibut with a Wasabi creme. Gosh was it perfectly crisp and full of flavor. My partner ordered the Buffalo Country Fried Steak with gravy. When in South Dakota...you guessed it, can't go wrong with Bison anything. If I'm ever in the area again I will go out of my destinations way to pay another visit. read more

I was out in the Black Hills on vacation and had heard that Sage Creek Grill has good food. So one evening, I stopped in for dinner. Since I've had a history with gout (can't eat meat), I opted for the egg, bacon sandwich. It was pretty decent. I'd rather have a steak or something though. I had a bite of pork chops and sauerkraut that my gf ordered. That was delicious! I had to take away 1 star bc the staff, while courteous, is rather stone-faced. The hostess didn't break a smile. The waitress wasn't smiling either. They were pretty serious the whole time. It was kinda odd. I'm used to the wait staff at least give me a obligatory smile welcoming patrons to their restaurant and checking on the food. But nope. These two were pretty much like Mt. I found this place from a Budget Travel travel guide. The food was fabulous!! The atmosphere could use some help, too much wood and not as cozy as it should be. Almost like 5-star food with 3-star atmosphere. But it's the best place to dine in Custer. It wasn't crowded when we walked by which made me question the goodness -- but it turned out to be a very, very good meal. I had a pork chop -- one of the best I've ever had. I went here only a week ago on a "first date" so I didn't feel it was appropriate to whip out my camera and photograph my food like I usually do, but I wish I could show you the lovely dish I had. I had the grilled salmon on a piece of dark bread (sort of an open-faced meal), which was recommended to me by my date. It was DIVINE. Firstly, they were careful not to overcook the salmon and it was cooked perfectly. It was a large piece, so you get your money's worth. Then they covered it with cheese (provolone?), and then the most delightful thing. They serve a wild mixed greens salad on top of that with homemade dressing. Sounds weird, but the end result is delightful. The bread we asked for, so I'm not sure if it's on the menu or not, but it was a freshly sliced bagette. Yummy. I only have one complaint. It's VERY loud, and there's no booths. I'm a big fan of privacy and love booths, but this place is wide open. Since there's so much wood everywhere, every noise is magnified. Also, it's pretty busy, so we had to sit at the bar, which normally I do not like to do. But if you want good food, come here, then find some place else in Custer for an after-meal cocktail and privacy. The best part of the dish was its price, especially for a dinner menu. Sage Creek Grille is an interesting duck in the town of Custer. It's very well regarded by the yelp crowd, but strangely seems to lean toward the silver haired. The decor is fairly sparse and feels a little country kitchen, but it's simple and clean. The menu is a little on the pricey side, but they offer high end dishes featuring locally raised buffalo meat. You can't go wrong with a buffalo dish. I ordered the burger, the misses got some buffalo pasta and were pleased with the meals. The burger seemed a little small, but i'm accustomed to half pound pub style burgers. No french fries, but the grilled red potatoes were aight. Drink selections were limited, the best looking beer on the menu was out :( Service was friendly and prompt. Overall, this place was solid, but just not my style. If you see something on the menu that intrigues you, give it a try. It definitely could be a place you enjoy, it just wasn't my style. read more

So pleasantly surprised to find this gem! 9 of us of varied ages and tastes came in for dinner at 7 PM. It was quite full so we had to split our party which was no problem. We frankly had minimal expectations considering we were in a small resort town. Our group was comprised of well travelled foodies. The blue cheese bruschetta started us off with a winner. Despite the full house we were waited on promptly. We ordered 8 different main dishes and every one met or exceeded expectations. Even the side salads were noteworthy. Desert? Amazing. So good I had to ask about the pastry chef as they had to have been made in house considering their freshness and uniqueness. This restaurant was a welcome find during our June, 2016 road trip through the Northern Midwest. We were growing tired of eating at local restaurants which mostly offered run-of-the-mill food. My husband ordered the bison burger which we believe was the best one we had during our time in the Black Hills. I ordered the pork carnitas stacked enchilada. It was delicious. There was a cilantro sauce drizzled over the stacked enchiladas (which were served in a large bowl) and even though my husband is not a fan of cilantro, he loved this meal. The pork was tender and had a nice flavor, and everything in the enchilada blended very well together. The house salad was large and very fresh. The kids menu had plenty of options, too. We had dinner at the Sage Creek Grille while visiting Custer and the four of us who dined together were all very pleased with our meals. Three of us ordered the wild sockeye salmon with risotto. I was really happy to find wild sockeye at a restaurant in SD. I currently live in Nebraska and wild caught seafood of any kind is damn near impossible to come by. For that matter, I've never seen risotto on a restaurant menu in NE either. I make it often at home so I was happy to find it here. It needed some salt and the peas and carrots were a strange choice, but it worked. The atmosphere has a cozy, chic mountainy vibe. The service was good and they were very on top of the water refills. They have a comprehensive wine and beer list. I didn't try any of them but there are a number of interesting sounding craft beers coming from nearby states. read more

We're staying over in Hill City and all the reviews in that town were dismal so we're happy to travel a few miles to this charming restaurant. We split their Jamaican chicken fricassee main course, and we had the Cesar salad and the soup of the day which was a delicious split pea. We just tried out Sage Creek Grill on our first night in the Custer area. Overall, we were pleased. Given the location, this is probably one of the better restaurants around. Food was pretty good, with salads being the low point. We really enjoyed the mixed vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes. Service was friendly though we had issues with our server being timely. She probably had too many tables that we keeping her busy. Dessert choices were cool. We tried their carrot cake and chocolate chili pot de creme. The carrot cake was one of the best I've had and the pot de creme was very flavorable and we liked the spicy touch of the chili but a bit too heavy and thick for our expectations.
