The salmon was good as mentioned in other reviews for Sage Creek Grill. The salmon portion was large and the greens were fresh. The sourdough bread was also good - that's the two stars. Unfortunately, the burger that was ordered as medium well was still raw on the inside. I was able to eat the edges, but my desire to avoid dying from E. Coli poisoning kept me from sampling the still mooing center section. The home style potatoes made up the rest of my lunch - they were good - of course I hadn't ordered potatoes for lunch, but a medium well burger. After the server came by to ask about our meal, I pointed out the uneaten bleeding burger and said "it's still pretty raw". The server said "huh" and walked away. The next contact with the staff was the server dropping off the check. No apologies, no manager, no offers to make a new burger. I don't send food back, and I don't ask for free food. If you run a business, it's not my job to ensure that your staff are able to do their job. Food safety is no joke, people die from undercooked ground beef. It's unlikely that I will be in Custer SD ever again, but if I do find myself here again, I certainly won't eat at Sage Creek Grill. read more

Adorable little restaurant in the heart of downtown Custer. We went thinking it was going to be a small diner-ish like atmosphere. It wasn't it was a cute little restaurant that was casual yet with a sort of upscale feel. The service was very friendly from the hostess to the server to the bus boy. I had the Cajun fettuccine with sockeye salmon and my husband had the Asian noodle bowl with shrimp both excellent! The vegetables in the pasta were fresh and crispy, the salmon was cooked perfectly and the Cajun cream sauce was delicious. What an amazing, fresh menu! We were in a group of 7 with many different tastes. Everyone walked away thinking we should "repeat" this place in our short 5 day stay in Custer! Everyone ordered something completely different, everyone was completely delighted with their unique dishes. Great food and nice service in an unexpected location. It sits at the end of a main tourist drag, which could lead one to think it's just another place with the goal of hoovering up vacation dollars while not really giving an effort. Fortunately that's not the case - this is a place you'd actually want to visit. The ambience is informal and low-key. Like landscape photography meets social hall. The focus is on customers, food, and service, and on that front all sides win. There's a small but nicely varied selection of tasty local and regional beers, the Lost Cabin Jackalope Hunter being by far our favorite of the night. And the buffalo burger ... Wow. After adding bacon and mushrooms, it quickly became one of my favorite burgers anywhere. My wife loved the creamy beef pot roast sandwich, and we both raved about the seasoned red potatoes. And if you like carrot cake even a little bit, my goodness - you must get this one. Must. Literally the best carrot cake we've ever tasted. I might go back just for another slice of that alone. Service was friendly and attentive. This is always a good thing, but it was especially impressive because our server had a boatload of people and tables and he somehow made it look effortless while getting everything right. Outstanding establishment! From the initial greeting by Ronaldo to Jennifer our waitress, to the reasonably prices and delicious meal, it was excellent. I have to say while waiting for our meal, I watched Ronaldo not only checking in patrons on a wait list, but filling vacated seats, setting tables, pouring water when glasses were empty, clearing tables. I finally asked him what his job was - both he and Jennifer said the entire staff helps each other out to be sure each customer gets the best experience. What a refreshing way to operate an establishment. In fact Ronaldo and Jennifer were busy but more than willing to answer any questions and made the night very enjoyable. From the moment we walked in the front door we were treated like long lost friends! What a cozy little hole-in-the wall pub in the heart of an iconic American town. We ate here twice during our trip to South Dakota. Highly recommend the Walnut Blue Cheese Bruschetta. We also enjoyed the Field Green salad, which if you add protein it make a great entree. This restaurant had a wait every time I walked by so I decided to try it. Ordered the Angel hair pasta with lemon butter sauce and Bourbon St Cajun fettuccine. Both pasta dishes were sitting in a pool of sauce. The Angel hair came with some veggies that were a little over cooked but flavorful. The fettuccine had a nice kick to it. Great team work, multiple staff making sure tables were taken care of. Husband and I both ordered the same lunch entree, Sockeye Salmon and fresh veggies. The Salmon tasted previously frozen, wasn't terrible wasn't great. The veggies were cooked perfectly. I was surprised at their large selection of desserts. We've eaten at a lot of restaurants in South Dakota while on vacation, and this is by the best restaurant we have eaten at. we actually went out of our way to come back here a second time, as we are not staying in Custer. The pecan encrusted Canadian walleye was excellent, and it came with a wide variety of very tasty vegetables and three types of potatoes. We made two trips to Sage Creek Grill in four nights (and we were staying in Rapid City). I enjoyed the buffalo burger, and my wife REALLY liked the wild salmon sandwich. The soups were tasty and filling, too. The side salad is not a strong point. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the photos on the wall are great.
