Let me preface my review by stating that I know vets are busy, especially neurologists, and I am sympathetic. But that doesn't excuse the poor service we received here. This took place in November 2022. Our dog Mojo had been having neurological issues for several months, and our regular vet recommended we visit a specialist. After calling around to multiple offices and being told that the soonest they could see me was 3 months, I contacted SAGE who just had a cancellation. YAY! The office is about a 45 minute drive for us, so we committed an entire afternoon for the visit. Our first visit was fine, although because of COVID protocols we weren't able to see the neurologist (Dr. Vitale) in person. They did an MRI and a Spinal Tap, but didn't find any issues. They prescribed some medication that might help his symptoms and made a follow up appointment for more blood work (which sadly we couldn't do at our regular vet). The medication made him worse, so I sent Dr. Vitale a message. She said she'd ask her colleagues for their thoughts and that we would discuss at his follow-up. However the follow-up was a waste of time. We did not get to see the Doctor or the Vet Tech. There seemed to be a huge disconnect between us and the person who took him back for the blood test. She had no knowledge of his case, and was the middle woman between us and the technician, who was the middle woman between us and the vet. I told her that I thought we needed some medication and she actually asked me "how much"... Um, that's your job to tell me! Turns out we got too much because they wanted to wean him off of it, which someone should have told us. I sent Dr. Vitale a message telling her that we were disappointed with our visit, and I never heard from her again. Keep in mind that we spent almost $10,000 here! To make matters worse, I called them at the beginning of April to ask them to send Mojo's records to UC Davis Vet Hospital. When we arrived for our visit at the end of May, they had not received them. So UC Davis had to call SAGE to ask for them TWICE before they finally sent them. Bottom line is that SAGE appears to be understaffed and they don't value their patients. They made us feel like we didn't matter to them at all. When we were referred to Sage for my chi mix, Honey, I was dreading that terrible things might follow because of her medical condition. Yet, each time we were back for tests and adjustments of her meds, she seemed at ease and was happy and friendly to all the caregivers there. This story has a sad ending, alas, because her condition worsened and she developed a second serious problem. When it was clear that I needed to do right by her, I took Honey back to Sage to be put to sleep. It still breaks my heart, but Honey was well-liked at Sage and appreciated for her specialness. The day after this, her doctor, Ryan Garcia, called me to express his sorrow that we had reached that point so soon. A bouquet of flowers arrived from them, and a few weeks later, I also received a sympathy card signed by about a dozen of the employees there. I've never experienced so much caring from a vet clinic, and it touched me deeply. They were nothing but expert, affectionate, and professional with her, and they were also kind, attentive, and humane with me, which is helping me get through this time. read more

I was really worried because I had heard of and read many large dog breeds such as German shepherds passing from flipped stomach that was not addressed immediately. It took me 30 mins to recognize the possible signs (unusual behavior and kept coming to me with his head hung rather than playful after dinner, panting, and unable to lie down completely and kept getting up, clearly due to discomfort), look up and call the closest open emergency vet, and bring him in to the vet. I originally have no problem with Sage at all but my most recent visit two days ago left me reeling with regret. I have a very young puppy with bloody stool and I brought the puppy to Sage as emergency. While I understand that emergency vet charges are expensive, and I was prepared for it, nothing prepared me for the price gouging that happened. They sent me home with a pack of probiotics which cost $138.87. While all I needed was a 10 day supply, they sent me with an entire box of it. The same 30 day supply of probiotics at Amazon would have cost me $30 even with tax and prime shipping. They also sent me with diet gel that again would have cost me $25 with tax and shipping. My puppy, despite their assurances that puppy would be fine, is still not fine. So I gave them a call again (less than 36 hours later) and they told me to bring the puppy in. I was going to ask them what the time line is and if puppy could wait until I have an appointment with my regular vet. This practice of price gouging is really disturbing and discouraging to say the very least. My puppy was still alert and active despite blood in her stool and they could have just given me an option for probiotics and/or diet gel, but there was none. They made it seemed like the prescription is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and there's no other option and my puppy will die. I'm a bit torn on how to rate Sage. My previous experience was a year ago early in their Covid procedures. The wait was a bit long but they were communicative and seemed to handle my emergency quite well. I just returned yesterday with another emergency that required an overnight stay. I can tell by the defensive nature of the signage that there have been angry customers. I can tell by the long wait, 45 minutes, to be seen, why. I have only received one update las night along with an awkward request for a $2000 payment and a warning that the bill might exceed $3000. I just called for an update, was on hold for 12 minutes, spoke to someone, was on hold for another 10 minutes and then was told no one was available to provide an update. I was not given a time when someone could follow up with me. I can only be sympathetic to a point given the circumstances. All I need is a quick call or email or text to avoid becoming another angry customer. Hope to hear from them soon. read more

This review is for Dr Struble and team in the Internal medicine dept. I had brought my Libby in a few weeks ago for answers after she was misdiagnosed by my regular vet saying she just needed more exercise and eat less in order to lose her "pot belly". I had seen another vet out of the area late last year for another issue and they (not even knowing her) asked if I had ever tested her for Cushings disease. As she had all the symptoms for it and was shocked my vet had never even mentioned it. We did the tests and she was borderline but I was told to recheck in 5/6 months. Fast forward to a few weeks ago I took her back to my vet with records as they since have new doctors taking over the practice since the other vet is retiring. He looked at everything and referred me to Sage as even though she was "borderline" for the Cushings her cortisol levels were through the roof so something was off. That's when Dr Struble comes in. I was able to forward all her records before appt. When I arrived I was able to talk to her directly to give the history. She examined Libby and did all the tests again. She has Cushings!! Dr Struble was very thorough in explaining everything to me, treatment options, follow up needs, side effects to watch out for and now we have started her on meds that will hopefully control the Cushings and help her be comfortable again. It's going to be something she will have to live with the rest of her life but now at least I have answers. I'm thankful for being persistence and forcing the issue until I got answers. I just feel bad it took over 2 years with my regular vet saying "she's fine" just walk her more and feed her less. :( Thank you Dr Struble and team!! read more

Paid $8500 for benign mass removal, called when wound swelled with large amount of fluid, scheduled urgent care visit and arrived 10 min late due to traffic accident on way and staff refused to see us after placing us on hold for 10 min to ask whether we could still be seen!!! Then we were told a triage nurse would be out to assess our dog as an ER patient and even that took an additional 25 minutes... when they did eventually come out, we were told that it was a 1-2 hr wait and if we left to use the bathroom that we would lose our place in line but we can't use the bathroom here bc of covid...this is insanely inhumane...we cannot leave bc our dog may crash but they wouldn't see us bc we were 30 seconds late. Even though they said I would get to pick the urn my dog would go in after being cremated, even though one lady had a rude and irritated look on her face when i went to go pick up the urn, the way they made us feel that day when we had to bring our poor baby girl to be put down was 5 stars. They brought our baby out in a gorgeous purple blanket that went with her dark fur color, they were sweet and patient, they didn't rush us. They made our very bad day just a little bit better knowing they would take care of her. We love you Hannah and we will never forget you. (Hannah was our dog, not a helpful employee). read more

Dr Christina Vitale was rude, impatient and uncaring. We spent $318 for the consultation, took leave off work to make the appointment, and ended up with little new information and exactly zero confidence in Sage. First off, Dr Christina Vitale refused to meet any clients face to face, which would have been fine if she had been a good communicator over the phone. However, she repeatedly cut our questions off and ignored them. For example, we wanted to ask what she thought of what our general vet suggested as a possible cause. Before we could even finish our sentence, Dr Christina Vitale interrupted us with " I do not care what other vets think. This is what I think...". Apparently, 3 minutes of her time is the limit of a $318 consultation. We had tonnes of questions to ask but Dr Vitale just kept pushing us to the nurse to discuss next steps (basically a $6000 MRI or an additional $2000 spinal tap). In the end, she just hang up half way through our sentence and passed us off to the nurse. Most of the questions we had were left unanswered. In addition, Dr Christina Vitale did not bother to even watch even one video of our dog's seizure episode. Our general vet had repeatedly told us to show the video to the neurologist for a clear diagnosis, but I guess that was too much work for Dr Christina Vitale. How can we possibly entrust our pet to a vet who doesn't answer our questions, clearly doesn't care enough to want to properly diagnose our dog, and seems to only want to push us to the payment stage? DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BRING YOUR pet HERE. Understand the numerous negative reviews posted below, and understand the risk you are taking. The front desk staff is ABHORRENT. They have no problem being rude and aggressive, and routinely hang up the phone on clients needing help if they don't want to do the extra work. After paying thousands in vet bills, we waited for 7 hours for the vet to write us a prescription to help the pain for our passing dog, a dog she had personally diagnosed just a few days ago. We called repeatedly to check on the status of the prescription. The front desk staff, Lauren and Ashley, refused to follow up on the matter and kept repeating the same sentences their computer told them to repeat, and repeatedly hung up on us citing the clinic was "very busy." They never once followed up on the request. The complete lack of compassion and empathy at Sage couldn't be displayed clearer if they tried. It is unconscionable what our pet went through waiting for relief. The apathetic, careless staff here will not lift a finger to help you once you are done paying their bills. About a month ago we brought in our dog because he was limping after he had stepped in a bush. I've worked on a 911 ambulance for 12 years, so let me tell you I appreciate it very much when people are empathetic of other people's situation. From the second I called the lady on the phone was extremely nice. When we got there they got us into a room right away, the tech was amazing older gentlemen, tattoos. He could see how sad we were and was really nice, he even made us a fresh pot of coffee. The vet doctor came in and was very thorough and explained everything. The next two tech came in to give my pup some medicine, two young ladies, they were Extremely nice as well. I can't explain to you how much it meant to me that every single person we talked to was understanding and gentle with my dog. My dog ended up with a sprain on his leg, he's gotten better since! They took her right back and the vet came back with the bad news that a growth on liver had burst and there was blood in her stomach. Surgery was an option but may only by her a couple of months as it was most likely cancer. I had to make the excruciating choice to let her go. Everyone was so gentle and kind and let me spend those last moments with her. A few days later I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers with a sympathy card. If you conducted business at Sage during or around February 2020, you may have been charged up to 5% more than what you were quoted on a per-unit price basis. Doctor and care team was fantastic and empathetic, 5 stars. Billing / finance / management was mismanaged, dismissive, and unorganized. In my case, the Sage Centers for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care office in Campbell, California (hereafter referred to as "Sage") overcharged me 5% without disclosure and also included an incorrect quantity of an item which led to an additional overcharge of almost $600. My incident took 9 months to resolve, where I had to point out the errors and chase for updates and action. On February 4th, 2020 I was given an itemized quote from Sage for my dog's surgery after the surgeon at Sage examined my dog. On February 26th, 2020 the surgery took place, and on the 27th I went to pick up my dog. The front desk told me that there will was an additional ~$1,200. I reviewed my original quote and the invoice, and noticed that each item was 5% higher than what I was quoted on a per-unit basis. A staff member came out to the front desk, I explained to her what I found. The staff member suggested that we do not talk about it at the open lobby area (there were others), but in a private room instead. In the private room, she agreed there was a discrepancy, and told me that there was a 3% price increase per item after my quote was provided. I showed her the increase was actually 5%. She agreed and wasn't sure why it was 5%. In addition, there was a line item that was quoted at 0.5 quantity, but the final bill charged 1.0 quantity of that item. Eventually, she did the best she was authorized to do, to let us go home that night with our dog and stated that Sage would look into it asap. Some weeks later, Sage sent an updated bill that corrected the 5% price increase, but not the extra 0.5 quantity. In July 2020, during a related follow-up visit with the same surgeon at Sage, I asked the surgeon if the line item mentioned above is supposed to be 0.5 instead of 1.0. The surgeon confirmed it should be 0.5. In August 2020, I sent an email to Sage describing the line item inaccuracy, and requested Sage to correct and fix the inaccurate balance so I could pay it. There was no response. 10/26/2020: I received a latter from a collection agency dated 10/12/2020 that Sage has turned over my balance for collection, threatening impact on my credit. I sent a follow-up email to Sage for information on that. 11/04/2020: Sent a follow up email, as I have not received a response. 11/05/2020: Called in, and staff member said that someone will call me. End of day, doctor called and said the balance should be erased and that someone should get in touch with me. 11/11/2020: no updates from Sage yet. I emailed them again for update. Sage then responded in writing that no debt is owed. read more

Sage was once a reliable and reputable veterinary hospital. Now new ownership places greed over emergency veterinary care as their new number one value. We recently brought in our dog who was suffering from a stomach issue. Their recommended professional advise was an overnight stay at the hospital at a cost of $6,000. They also noted that if surgery was required, that cost would be a minimum of $16,000. They kindly and quickly offered financing to ensure same day payment. Shameful and outrageous! I guess now, folks in the Silicon Valley will be forced to take the 1.5 hour drive to UC Davis Veterinary Hospital for their emergency veterinary needs. By the end of my dog's treatment I spent close to 15k. This is for prolonging his life 10 more months. If I had to go back and make this decision again, I would never gone through with it. Forget about the cost, it's the experience that I put my dog through simply for my selfish need of wanting to be with him for a bit longer. Imagine weekly visits, having your dog staying in a place where he's not familiar with and getting needles injections in him. Your pets don't know why they're there or why you're leaving them there. The only true happiness is when they see you picking them up. Never would I put another dog through that. I know it's in the hope of saving their life but...the truth hurts. They had me go back again later that day to get her a chest xray and when I took her back they did not do an xray but suggested I come back the next week to see a surgeon for an estimated $6000.00 procedure. Also, they told me she had given birth naturally but my competent new vets showed me her obvious c-section scar. We had been avoiding touching her belly since we were trying to dry her out from her recent whelping. I'm really happy I went to Sage. Unfortunately, a little over 6 months ago my dog Kodie was diagnosed with Lymphoma. He wasnt eating, and had no energy for a couple days so I brought him to his primary vet, and they were almost certain it was lymphoma within 10 minutes of checking him out. Kodie is an 11 yr old Cocker Spaniel, so I was really worried if he could even take treatment to make him better at all. DR Regan explained all of his options and gave reasonable expectations given the limited information she had at the first meeting. I said I would definitely give it a shot and see how Kodie was doing for the first few weeks. He started feeling and acting better within 2 days, and by 5 or 6 days he seemed like he was back to normal. He went to all of his appointments, and took all of his medication for 6 months. Now he is currently really happy. Sage extended Kodie's life and gave me a chance to make sure he is as comfortable as possible. read more

Phew! What a relief! My fears were alleviated and the surgery, both pre and post op, were successful. Be sure to invest in a Care Credit card and TruPanion (Trupanion pet insurance has one simple plan that covers 90% of veterinary costs with no payout limits.) The clinic can submit the claims with ease, there's Peet's coffee readily available and the staff is friendly and caring. Over an hour later and still haven't heard anything so I call them again. Once again the automated voice said the wait time would be 2 minutes and I stayed in the line AGAIN for another 20 minutes before giving up. If I can't get an initial visit appointment, how am I supposed to get an appointment when there's an actual emergency?! Called another recommendation, MedVet, and two of their locations picked up right away and I was able to get an appointment for my dog in less than 5 minutes. Having two cats (a brother and sister) both in their 'terrible twos' has made me a helicopter owner - always trying to be steps ahead of my cats. Unfortunately, cats can SURPRISE you! My cat had torn open a bag of chocolate chips, and the only evidence was a pile on the kitchen floor abandoned. Thankfully, I have a cat cam that helped me narrow down which cat was downstairs when - but still, panic set in. Growing up with cats, you feel like you've 'seen it all', but this was a whole other world of fear. We ended up calling SAGE almost at midnight, and we were so grateful they were available at all hours of the day. We had spoken with the front desk, explaining the situation and how nervous we were about the circumstances. Thankfully, we were able to receive over the phone advice, reassurance, and comfort at a time where we felt our family was in danger. We were provided sound advice regarding cats and chocolate, along with signs/symptoms to watch out for. Thankfully, this wasn't dark chocolate, since we learned the potency is much stronger and could have negative impacts on our kitties. I am so grateful to the staff at SAGE for their help and dedication at all hours. Emergencies can and do happen, knowing a place we can trust is nearby makes us feel so safe and in such good hands. As simple as it could've felt, having the access to expert advice gave us such relief. We had anticipated bringing our cat in for a check up, but based on the situation it wasn't a 'threat'. We were encouraged to come if the circumstances changed, but thankfully after staying up with Freddie the worst was a giant pee puddle on his bed. About 3 days after the 'incident' (and even the next day) he's doing wonderfully with an appetite, energy, and being his same old loving self. We purchased more food storage containers to avoid these situations, and are going to aim to avoid the avoidable at all costs. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Last Wednesday, we rushed my dog Leo to MedVet and was diagnosed with Vestibular Disease. For those who don't know what it is-- Vestibular disease is a a sudden, non-progressive disturbance of balance. Right now he is experiencing a sudden onset of loss of balance (can't stand or walk without support ), disorientation, head tilt, and irregular jerking eye movements called nystagmus. As time passed by, we had given him all sorts of antibiotics plus feeding him through and it seemed like it so bad to the point where he couldn't stand or walk on his own even with the support of my fiancé and I. On 7/19 my fiancé decided to bring Leo to Sage since we were told by our primary vet that Sage has a neurologist team and can get him in ASAP for an MRI & hospitalization if needed. Sage team recommended that he stays overnight for hospitalization and that they could get him in for a TECABO the following morning so we did exactly that. In less than 24 hrs they called us to ask for a decision on whether or not we decide to move forward with treatment. We were told that on top of the hospitalization, treatment and medications $6,370.25 the surgery will be an additional $11k-$13k and also told it was protocol to tell us if they need to do CPR it'll be an additional $1k+. Not only did we feel that it was way out of budget and out of our hands to cough out but .... IN WHAT WORLD DOES SOMEONE HAVE $20k CASUALLY ON HAND & TOLD IF THEY DONT HAVE THE DEPOSIT OR MONEY THEY'D BASICALLY LEAVE YOUR PET TO DIE! It's already tough on our pets and the owners that we have to see them go through this pain but they want to go ahead and make things worse and ontop of that have you in a tight position choosing whether you cough out the money or euthanize your pet. We all have bills, rent, and loans to pay for... so you're really gonna have us decide if it's food on our table or our dog huh? Anyways, after seeing reviews and finding out that one of their Doctors have a citation that so happened to take care of our dog while hospitalized it says " Campbell, CA On February 19, 2020, a $750 citation was issued to Christina Vitale, (RVT 17977) for failure to consider a diagnosis of a disease even though animal patient presented with classical clinical signs, and failure to notify patient owner that patient's abnormal lab findings, (BPC § 4883(1))." alone showed me that we needed to get our dog out of there even knowing that there's a risk and find a second opinion/cheaper price for a TECABO. The very last thing I would've wanted was for him to die in their care and not have given him a proper goodbye if that was the case. A day or two after he was able to walk, had regular bowel movements and started slowly being able to eat/drink with little assistance. Overall, I do not recommend Sage unless you can handle a huge bill. If anything I suggest you follow your gut feeling dog and cat parents whether it's you seeing your dog is unusual or if you're having second thoughts about a vet! read more

I have now taken two of my dogs to Sage. One for the Sage in Redwood City, where my dog was treated for bone cancer. Now that I live in the South Bay, I have taken my other labrador retriever to Sage in Campbell. I really wanted to trust them in the beginning, but as of a couple of days ago, they have lost my trust and I HIGHLY recommend that you DO NOT bring your pet here. Some of the doctors come off like they care, but as soon as you voice any actual questions or concerns about the care your dog is receiving or why you are receiving charges for things you've never even been made aware of...you see a whole other side to them. Dr. Vitale, in particular, told me and my partner that our dog had a degenerative spinal disease due to genetics. I let the woman I got my dog from know about the possibility of genetic issues and put her in touch with Dr. VItale. Yet when Dr. Vitale talked to her, she stated that my dog has an infection, nothing to do with genetics. Ironic that this was right after we had recently decided to take our dog elsewhere for care. Please, please, please--as someone who has grown up with dogs, and now as an adult, who has dogs of her own as well, I have seen doctors and vets that genuinely care for animals. Sage Campbell is not that. They are in it to solely make a profit. I have been charged tens of thousands of dollars from Sage, and yet had no answers of what was going on with my poor labrador. Now that I see someone else, these last two and a half weeks, my labrador has shown drastic improvements and is happy and in great spirits. Sage Campbell only cares about money--they'll initially act like they do not, but the deeper you get in with them, suddenly the more tests and medicines and surgeries they are recommending, but really with nothing concrete to help your pet.
