We were in Portland for some good seafood but the husband is a non-seafood lover. Go figure. But he does love him some pho so we found this restaurant while we were trying to find Fishermen's Grill (another review on its own). With good ratings on Yelp, we decided to give it a try. He order the pho tai and I ordered the egg rolls. I wanted to save stomach space for Fishermen's Grill. The pho was very good. The broth was flavorful and not too fatty. The husband enjoyed it thoroughly. The egg rolls were also good. This is probably the best Vietnamese restaurant I've been to since leaving Arizona. Came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The place was clean and the waiters were all very friendly and polite. Pretty fast service as well! I ordered a large beef pho noodle soup (around $9.50 i think). wasn't as filling as i expected but the noodle soup was decent. meal came with a separate soup as an appetizer, followed by my order which included the standard bean sprouts, lime slice, basil, and hot peppers that you would expect with any pho order. The meal ended nicely with a couple slices of oranges that came with the check. good overall dining experience, probably try something else next time to see if they are better portioned. read more

Had the Pad Thai with Chicken today. The noodles were dry, undercooked and tossed in loads of grease. You also do not get the 2 pieces of shrimp that typically comes with a Pad Thai with Chicken. I'll give it 2 stars. I've mentioned to the owner many times about how unauthentic the spicy fish sauce is, which accompanies many of her entrees. She still hasn't taken this suggestion into account. Vietnamese to me = PHO and the Pho is great here. One of the best I've had in New England. There are other items on the menu that are very good as well: from spring rolls to Crab Rangoon or Chow Foon. I wish they had bubble tea, but they do have other drinks on the menu that suffice. The atmosphere is casual but warm and clean. I walked in to order take out. Soon after I was given some hot tea and a ramekin of soup while I waited, both were a nice touch and very good. The first thing I had on my way home were the pork and taro rolls. Amazing! I purchased another dish, name unknown, that was just as good. Disappointed. Pho broth is too sweet. They add some type of sweetener to broth to attract people with sweet tooth. Added tripe to a beef pho and was later charged $3 on the bill. Weird. Could have gotten the combo with all meats and removed meats I did not want and paid less. I always order this way at every other pho restaurant I've ever been to and first time ever seen this. The food is excellent! My favorite is D5 - Vermicelli with Roasted Pork. The portions are large but you still feel like the food is light and healthy. I can even bring my 10-month old there and find things for her to eat (the Grill Chicken appetizer is great for her or me). The ladies working there are so friendly, too. For an appetizer, a main dish, and a glass of wine, my total usually comes to about 20 bucks. Definitely recommend going there to eat or getting take out or delivery. read more

The food- incredible. The service - UNREAL!! I felt like I was being babied. They even guided me through the menu! I decided it was high time I tried some pho... the bowl was HUGE! And I only ordered a medium. What they refer to as "bologna" is thankfully no such thing - it's a tasty little sausage. I can't believe how insanely nice the people were. I visited Saigon Restaurant with 2 friends tonight. The reviews were good so we decided to try it out. We ordered 2 dinner portions of Orange Chicken and 1 of Cashew Chicken. The food had no flavor. In fact, we could not taste any difference between the dishes. I found myself only eating the veggies and rice from the plate. The chicken was not appetizing. The only flavor I found was the post nasal drip in the back of my throat. The service was decent, but I will never eat here again. Maybe it was just a fluke in cooking, but it fucking sucked. read more

I have traveled to many places, Vietnamese food being one of my favorites, I have tried many, many Vietnamese restaurants all over the east and west coast. This is by far my favorite. Not only is their food absolutely amazing, with a flavor I can't even describe, the service is amazing. They simply don't get noticed as they should due to their "set back from the street" location. Best Asian food I've had in Portland. Ordered the fried dumplings, which were really good (I'm a dumpling fanatic and these were top 10%) with thick dough and a good chunk of meat inside. I could have used a little more seasoning in the meat, but other than that they were perfect, and the dumpling sauce on the side made up for any lack of seasoning in the meat. Also ordered the vietnamese rice noodle with beef sate, medium spicy, and it was truly delicious and a huge portion. The seasoning was exactly right and there was a good amount of meat in the noodles, along with vegetables like onions and carrots. I saved the noodle dish in my fridge and it stayed delicious until like 5+ days later when I finally got around to finishing it. Also delivery was super fast and everything was still hot. I'm usually skeptical of pan-Asian places, but it looks like I'll hae to re-evaluate that policy. For now this will definitely be my go-to Asian in town. My sister and I had lunch at Saigon today. The food was excellent. Lunch started with a tasty egg drop type soup with tofu. We both had bun which was delicious. The meat and shrimp were grilled and very tasty. The raw vegetables were marinated which gave extra flavor to the dish. The broth/sauce had good flavor. The serving size was large. It was a rainy crappy Friday night and my friend and I were starving. I suggested that we should go to siagon. It being conveniently located down the road, had parking and was delicious the first time I went sealed the deal. I wanted another excuse to go back honestly. The older I get the less appealing the old port sounds...especially on a Friday night when I am exhausted from work and waited all day to put on comfy clothes.....the thought of getting out of them and having to wear anything that doesn't have a stretchy waist really is like torture...plus the rain made me want to only eat something hot in a sweatshirt and yoga pants. Ok now that you all know that I really love my yoga pants....on to the food. Like I said we were STARVING so we ordered a few appetizers to start. We had the fresh spring rolls with pork skin and shrimp, crispy fried scallop and the fried mussels in lemongrass oyster and sauté sauce. None of our appetizers came out together. The spring rolls came first and I had ordered a glass of Riesling....where was my wine?! I was getting pretty annoyed honestly.....food before my drink really?! I finally got my wine with another appetizer that we ordered.....we couldn't tell weather it was the mussels or the scallop....which being a mainer you should be able to distinguish. Nope we couldn't....they were tiny fried little puffs which we assumed they were battered mussels. Then the easily recognizable mussels came out in their shells topped with yummy sauce. All in all the only app I liked were the mussels. Honestly I'd skip all the apps and just go for the entrees here! They were amazing. We ordered with the plan of sharing. We got the vermicelli with grilled shrimp and egg roll and the Saigon homemade rice noodles with pork skin, minced shallot, coconut cream and fish sauce. Omg both entrees were amazing which totally fixed the crappy apps that we had before. If you go here skip the apps and get the entrees, they are amazing....hell get 2 entrees cuz we had a hard time picking one.....and honestly for the price of the apps we could have easily both had 2 entrees. read more

the larger part of my grilled shrimp and egg roll vermicelli now rests peacefully in my trash can. it was the least dignity i could offer the poor dish - the bloated blue trash bag probably the closest thing to the sea those damned decapods have experienced in months (unless, that is, i'm to believe that they actually were dipped in lighter fluid prior to leaving the restaurant). the sprouts, carrot, shredded lettuce, and cilantro did their best to impart a sense of freshness to the noodles, but against the one-two combo of toxic avenger shrimp and boring fish sauce, they never had a prayer. thus was the chopped-up egg roll so flattered as to be considered edible amidst the execrable. apart from all that, the veggie spring roll was quite tasty. read more

Came here weekend with a friend. Service was not welcoming, and we were silently ushered to a table. It got more eventful when my friend used the restroom, and quickly came back to the table because the toilet was overflowing. She let someone know, who later came to our table and accused her of clogging the toilet. She tried to explain she didn't even use it in the 30 seconds she was gone, but the woman kept berating us. We had already ordered the pho dac biet, which came fairly quickly after our reaming out. The broth was fresh, but much sweeter than I prefer, and likely without MSG. I noticed that they seemed to be pickling lemons on the roof which is an interesting use of space. Otherwise, our meal was uneventful and we quickly left under the watchful glare of the woman who charged my friend with the clogged toilet. curb appeal leaves much to be desired, however once you step inside- its a cute, clean and friendly restaurant. I was offered tea while I waited for my to go order. I ordered the wonton soup and the vegetable spring roll for lunch. the soup was wonderfully flavorful and portion was large. the spring roll was super fresh and served with a delicious peanut sauce. I had pho for the first time that my friend's mom made, and I was instantly hooked. He recommended Saigon, and it did not disappoint. Everyone was very friendly, the large size pho is very generous for the price, and it was absolutely delicious. I went in again this weekend, and they gave me a cup of tea while I was deciding what to order, and a small bowl of soup while I was waiting for my to-go order to be ready. Yesterday we had a business lunch Duc,Yem,Muu,Thao. Yem order the Sweet and Sour Duck with the owner Mai, But they brought to us the Sweet and Sour Fish. We told them we wanted Duck, So we told them to make a Duck Plate and we will pay for it. Even though we did not it eat. Even though the fish was too fishy. We heard the owner his name is Dung curse and says to the waitress to force us to eat the plate they gave us. Or get the hell out of his restaurant. The owner Dung did not accommodate us and is ungrateful towards his customers. We will never come back to that restaurant ever again!!!!!! One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the Northeast, if not THE best. I have tried the Pho from every Vietnamese restaurant in Maine (that I know of) and I have to say that Saigon makes the best, hands down. Excellent broth with plenty of sprouts, lime, basil and cilantro to add. The rare beef Pho is phenomenal. This is often a destination for me. I have been to this location several times when it was other ethnic eateries, (in the past has been Greek and Persian). I first went to it thinking it was still the Persian restaurant, discovered that it was now Vietnamese, but figured "what the heck" and tried it. I can never remember the names of most of the foods,I have to read the menu each time and then it jogs my memory "Oh yes, that was the dish"...there is one that I particularly liked, it has both beef and shrimp, among fresh veggies. The awesome flavor of the beef is somethng I can't even compare it to, slighty smoky but spicy. And the aroma of it, my mouth is watering just thinking of how good the smell is. Well now, after writing this, I may just have to drive to Portland and get some more. It is a very pleasant place to eat. read more

A couple of my friends and I decided to come and eat here for one of my friend's birthday. Im new to this restaurant because I've just recently moved here front Texas. When we had arrived, the service was great. We were greeted at the door and presented to our seats. They gave us water and a hot pot of tea. Oh man, The tea was delicious! It was great for the cold weather . My choice of food was the Vermicelli with shrimp and egg rolls. I've never had it before but it sounded tasty. Before we got our main meal, they gave us a complementary soup while we waited for our meals. I believed it was called "egg dropped tofu soup." When our meals finally arrived, they all looked great. My dish was delicious as I thought. It came with a side of fish sauce as a dressing to pour over. When we were all done eating, they gave us our check but that wasn't the ending, along came a plate with oranges and fortune cookies to end it all.
