Been going to Mekong (or ordering from it, more rarely) for many years and have always had a very pleasant dining experience. The food is consistently quite good. It's never crowded - to the point of often being entirely empty besides myself and my companions - but I think these absent patrons are missing out. Service is sometimes uneven. Despite the lack of other customers, it can still take quite awhile to get served. Came here on a random weekday and there was plenty of room. I was really surprised to see they had a selection of bubble tea to order of which was pretty neat to add another place to the list (though I don't actually have a list). The staff were super friendly and the space is really delightful and cozy. There was apparently a big car accident right outside some time ago so city planners take note, just another story that Forest Ave is a horrible street! My friend and I ordered the seafood platter and the pad kee mao. As an apology for the long (was there?) wait time, we got some free veggie Rangoon which was a great little appetizer but super filling. My pad kee mao was perfect -- really nice thick noodles and super mild spice level. Would recommend upping the spice level cause it was quite low! Ordered delivery of 1 bowl of shrimp tom yum and shrimp pad thai, thru Uber Eats, where they appear as Mekong Thai Restaurant. Inedible. The tom yum was basically a thin liquid of tamarind flavoured onion broth overloaded with onion slivers, and slices of slippery canned mushrooms. There was no other flavour, just one shrimp. The pad thai was worse, bathed in some sweet and sour concoction and LEMONGRASS. $40 down the drain. Avoid for thai food. read more

Came for lunch mid week, on a day that demanded noodle soup. Place is surprisingly large with sufficient tables on two levels. We ordered chicken pho and fresh spring rolls. The menu is pan-Asian, with heavy Thai and Vietnamese influences - and it's quite large. Fresh spring rolls were freshly made and full of high quality ingredients. Came in to try out takeout at this restaurant. Ordered the Stir fried garlic dish and the Szechuan green beans and tofu. Both dishes had vegetables that were not overcooked (yay!) but were drowning in sauce (typical. So hard to find good Chinese without over-saucing) the tofu dish had a peanut sauce which I found unusual, but edible. The wife's dish of vegetables was quite tasty. It's worth saying that both dishes got poured into a strainer to get rid of excess sauce. The folks handling takeout were careful and pleasant. We will try some other dishes. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! I've been coming here regularly now for about a year at the recommendation of my nail tech. I used to go to another place near Woodford Corner, but since they closed down I was in the market for a new chinese/asian go to for take out. This place won for us as they also have some Vietnamese food as well. I typically will come here, grab a drink at the bar, and place an order to go. The bartenders there make a mean drink, that's for sure! They'll remember you if you've come back a few times, and I am always well greeted by all of them. I've never actually eaten in, just take out, but they have a ton of room, both in the bar as well as in the restaurant. Nice large private parking lot as well. The staff are so nice, and you will frequently see the owner there if dining in the bar. My new (or not so new) go to asian place :) read more

Portland has a plethora of Thai restaurants. For a city of 60,000 we some how have almost 10 Thai places to go. For high end Thai at Boda to hole in the walls like Saeng Thai. Mehkong has a nice location slightly outside of downtown Portland a very large parking lot. They are next door to a restaurant that has gone through more names than p. diddy at this point. We started the dinner with a corn fritter appetizer, I didn't really care for it, it was more corn batter than filling. The dipping sauce was a red syrup-y sweet concoction that did not enhance the appetizer. I had the duck pad Thai special it was pretty standard pad Thai, the duck was in large chunks that tasted great except for the fatty grizzle that was attached to so some pieces (shudder for a moment). The service was great, refilled the water in a timely manner and made sure to check in on us. Again pretty standard Thai place for Maine, if this was in the south where they shockingly have few Thai places this would be a 4 but when this city has so much to offer you need to step it up. read more

Be wary of the yelp/grubhub menu descriptions. I ordered the general thai lunch special that had a description of being fried rice. I ended up receiving veggies in a sickly sweet orange sauce that wasnt very appetizing. I tried to get help at the restaurant when I picked it up and they told me to go through grubhub for support. They then refused to refund when the GH customer service agent I was working with called them. It's a shame because they have the best pad thai and great prices. read more

Ordered food on 2/20 with family. We ordered the following: Pan friend rice noodles, spring rolls, chicken wings, shumai, crab rangoon, pad thai, shrimp drunken noodles, & orange chicken. Besides waiting 2 hours for the food to be delivered (which we understand everywhere is short staffed), every single one of us (8/8) became ill (vomit and diarrhea) within 12 hours of eating the food. When I called the next morning to let them know, they offered to bring me more food to make up for it and said all the food was fresh. I was not looking for a refund, but I wanted them to be aware incase anyone else called. I was told it was not their food and it must be something else. I just wish they took the foodborne illness factor more seriously. read more

You know those comedic scenes in movies when a woman orders an enormous amount of food for take-out and the person on the other end wants to know how many it's for. And, despite being told it's for one person, the restaurant still includes multiple pairs of forks, chopsticks, and fortune cookies in the bag? That was me at Mekong. We'll get back to that. Thai food isn't my go to, but I heard rumor that this place has vegetarian crab rangoon. I haven't had rangoon in almost ten years, so this jumped to the front of my Restaurant's To Try Queue (don't judge me). PLUS they're on Yelp Eat24 (a delivery service that doesn't jack up the prices AND delivers on time), so it made my Forever Alone Friday POMO Night perfect. Customer Service In my order, I said I had a fish allergy and could NOT eat the rangoon if they touched anything with seafood (sometimes this is the only way for people to take vegetarians seriously). The owner of the restaurant called me TWICE in the next hour, both of which I missed. When he showed up with my food, he let me know that the rangoon were vegetarian friendly and that he wanted to make sure I knew, he tried calling, but he couldn't get through to me. But it was important to him that I know. This isn't just customer service. This is above and beyond that. I can't get over how lovely and thoughtful he was. Food +1. Rangoon ($5.95): minced carrot, cream cheese, and scallion in a fried wonton shell. They were everything I was hoping for and more. Six to an order, and I relished every.perfect.bite. I also realized that you don't even need crab in these. Like at all. Everywhere else is selling you a lie, foodie friends. A fried shell (that's not greasy or soggy) filled with warm cream cheese and green onions do the trick just perfectly. #FanForLife - 2. Vegetable Curry Puff ($5.95): stuffed dough filled veggies and curry powder. I didn't end up eating these; they just weren't what I was expecting. Bland, all one note in both flavor and texture, a bit too doughy. Skip this entirely and order another round of rangoon or... + 3. Fresh Spring Rolls with Tofu ($4.95): rice wrapper filled with lettuce, cukes, sprouts, carrots, vermicelli, scallions, and tofu with a peanut sauce. YAAAAAAAS. So fresh. So light. So.many.little.bites.of.happiness. I know that it was just a couple large spring rolls cut into ten smaller pieces, but it seemed like such an amazing amount of food for so cheap (you're getting way more here than you are in the Trader Joe's prepackaged ones). +/- 4. Moseman Curry with Tofu ($11.95): potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, bamboo, pineapple, ground peanuts, basil, and tofu. This was tasty, but it didn't actually have ANY potatoes in it (which would have been a nice texture addition). It was still super flavorful, the peanuts on top added some great crunch, and the addition of the pineapple gave it a zip I wasn't expecting. Not sure I would order it again... not sure I wouldn't order it again. TL;DR: I'm a glutton. I want all the rangoon. And no, I'm not sharing so no need for the, *ahem*, four pair of chopsticks you sent me, Mekong. read more

Also we ordered fried wings and received chicken in batter instead. "To Dine In" returned some the money . We had to throw away some of it. read more

I made a 2 hour drive from Concord NH to Portland for dinner at Mekong Asian Bistro after work. I had a $30 dining certificate I wanted to use up at Mekong Asian Bistro. I arrived here on a quiet Tuesday night. This Asian fusion restaurant serves up a variety of Thai and Vietnamese dishes at reasonable prices for lunch and dinner. The place has a main bar area/takeout counter with dining tables and an upper dining room with table seating. I decided to be seated in the quieter upper dining room. I ordered two entrees, Shrimp Green Curry ($13.95) and Pad Thai Noodles ($11.50). I was given complimentary fried noodles with sweet dipping sauce and water as I waited. The food arrived to my table hot & fresh in about 10-15 minutes with Pad Thai first, followed by the Shrimp Green Curry with a side of brown rice next. There was a lot of food for one person. The Pad Thai noodles were very soft and dense and had a mix of egg, vegetables, sprouts, and tender boneless chicken pieces. The sweet flavors (with lime) of this pad thai dish were a bit overwhelming. The green curry dish had a semi spicy sweet flavor with a mix of coconut milk (base), tender shrimp, green pepper, bamboo shoots, snow peas, string beans, broccoli, basil leaves, and spices. Both dishes were great, filling to eat and I decided to get to go boxes, so I could order dessert. I ordered the Coconut Fried Ice Cream Sundae ($4.95), which was comprised of a batter fried ice cream ball topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and cherry, which was very good. The check total with tax was $32.83 and I was able to use the $30 dining certificate to cover most of the check. read more

I came here a couple of times but the past few times I had an upset stomach the next day. Overall their food is decent, a little too much MSG for my taste but I was able to finish it or save the rest for the next day since their dinner serving sizes are generous. The service is not bad either, but I would assume it's based on the time you go since there weren't much people inside. I ordered the pad Thai, and my friends ordered drunken noodles and Thai fried rice. They weren't bad plus when we were seated we were given crispy wanton wraps with a dip as an appetizer while we waited for our food. The takeout order was complete, so that is great! But my pad Thai smelled like soy and fish sauce and vinegar....and nothing like pad Thai other than the noodles. I know those are ingredients, but they are not generally the overall smell and flavor. I also got the appetizer for one, and in the bottom of the container was a few tablespoons of pooled grease that the things were sitting in. I have ordered here before many times, but not for 6 months. I have eaten at the restaurant, but that was like 3 months ago. It is usually very good! But only ate a small amount of my food and the rest was in the trash. I basically threw away $40 of food including delivery fee, tip and service fee. Sad. I would recommend going and eating there and not getting delivery, because then if things are not good you can get assistance from your server instead of throwing your money away. read more

We came here from out of state. My parents love to look for Vietnamese restaurants anywhere we go and we had heard from a woman that this place was a good place to get stir fry lobster. It definitely did not disappoint. My brother and I got the pad Thai and the pan fried rice noodles and both were seasoned to absolute perfection. The lobster was cooked very well. On top of everything, the service provided was great. The owner came by several times to make sure that we were accommodated for and even gave us an extra dish of the puff calamari on the house! So, I was craving something that tasted good in the greater Portland area, my friend recommended this establishment. He said you could either eat in or take out .. so, I busted it solo act style. I opened it up with a mixed appetizer platter for one that came with two chicken wings, a wonton, crab rangoo, one beef stick and one chicken stick with four dipping sauces including a scrumptious peanut sauce that was both thick and tasty. I then ordered the Pad Tai and it was a large sized portion and deliciously tasty dish that was littered with three large shrimps and many chunks of white meat chicken. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the flavors were mouth watering. The service was spot on and prompt with four other tables in the dining area. The only piece that I would give some constructive criticism is the decor really isnt anything special with flat wallboard carpet and stained rugs. But the service and the food overcame the blah decor. If you are looking for a place to go that has a good priced menu for some delicious Thai/Asian cuisine, then head into Mekhong. Remember one other thing .. it is a little confusing because it sits right in front of the Venue restaurant which is a bar. Don't confuse the entrances .. it is sitting closest to the street. The food is disgusting.. I spent 12 dollars on a Vietnamese salad and it turned up to simply be a plate of cabbage with boiled chicken. This one caucasian waitress was arguing with me about how it was an authentic Vietnamese dish when my ethnicity is Vietnamese. She was making rude comments about my 3 year old son. Her whole attitude was hostile towards us from the minute we walked through the door. She acted completely put out by the fact we were dining in because she seemed completely disinterested in lifting a finger. We order over 90 dollars in food from here at least once a week. I love this place. The portions are always generous. However it is the authenticity of the flavors that I come back for. Most Chinese restaurants just open an industrial size container of duck sauce, pour it in a bowl and call it good, but this place creates original sauces. The taste is phenomenal. And it's not ground up poor quality meat covered up in a lot of batter; but generous portions of clearly identifiable meat and seafood. They don't dumb down the spices here. We ordered spring rolls, tamarind roasted duck, pad kee mao, and rangoons. The rangoons substitute carrot for crab but you wouldn't know the difference! The roasted duck is delicious-very crispy, but the tamarind sauce is a typical overwhelmingly sweet Chinese sauce... I did appreciate the steam veggies on the side! The drunken noodle is amazing, and the chicken seems to be higher quality than that of other Thai places. I would go back for the Thai!!! read more
