I have been ordering here for years, but about 6 months ago I started ordering from an amazing Vietnamese restaurant that had recently started providing delivery service. Although the food is good, the inconsistency in their service make it difficult to continue ordering here. I thought I would give it a try again tonight and can see that things haven't changed. So tonight the restaurant ran out of sprouts. Rather than running to the store, giving me a call, or simply omitting it, they sent the pho goodie bag with a hand full of lettuce. Did they think I wouldn't notice... or actually put lettuce in my soup? Recognizing that they are missing an important part of the dish, one would think they would honor the request I type every time in the comments in all caps: "EXTRA BASIL PLEASE", but I was only able to fish out 3 tiny leaves. This place is legit. I have been really disappointed in the quality of Vietnamese food in Manhattan, but Saigon Shack hits. It's small, limited counter space and tables packed in, so it always feels crowded. It's not really a linger over your meal kinda place, it's more of a lunch joint. I've been twice and had the summer roll in warmer weather which was delicious, and just a few days ago had the chicken pho with a Thai iced tea. The Thai iced tea was good, strong, not insanely sweet. The chicken in the pho is grilled lemongrass chicken, which I am a big fan of. Even for places where the pho ga broth is good I don't normally eat much of the chicken cause boiled chicken is so boring. The lemongrass flavor infuses the broth, making it even more delicious. Was able to get seated immediately upon arrival, but if I had even came 20 minutes later, the line would be out the door. I ordered the Classic Beef Pho and I feel like I've had better pho in NYC. The pho was fairly standard, nothing really stood out. The beef was a bit tough to chew on. I will say that it's pretty reasonably priced compared to other places in NYC but the taste was nothing rave about. My friends and I were in search of hot soup/broth-y things while in the area and stumbled upon this place! The Saigon Shack pho featured beef balls, brisket, and sliced beef. The beef balls were chewy, bouncy, and tasty. The brisket wasn't as tender as I had hoped, likely because it was on the lean side. The noodles were pretty standard. Appreciated how the broth was hot enough but didn't overcook my noodles. Flavor wise, it was well-seasoned with an appropriate level of saltiness and onions/green onions. Sprouts were fresh but wish they gave us more basil. Coming from the West Coast, I didn't think there was anything super impressive but overall their pho was solid for NYC standards. Food came out quick. There was a good amount of seating but mostly for parties of 2. We were seated close to the main door so it was unfortunately cold. Good pho, good price, can't complain. It's best to come right before the dinner rush on a Friday. My partner and I arrived a little before 6 and were seated immediately; by the time we left there was a line forming outside of the restaurant to be seated. The place is a divey, casual, and kinda smoky. Your clothes will come out smelling like food so wear a t-shirt and some sweats. Service is quick and efficient and we got our appetizer and pho pretty quickly. Skip the fried vegetable spring rolls and get yourself some fries next door. For 9 dollars for vegetable spring rolls, you would think they would give more or have some really special vegetable spring rolls. Gotta make their money somehow. Saigon Shack is one of the anchors of MacDougal Street, perhaps the most eccentric yet endearing street in NYC. I came in here fresh off getting served an L by another job application, so needed a quality bowl of pho to ease the pain. The exterior is not what I would expect from a Vietnamese restaurant as you are met with a yellow and white striped canopy, something a tasteful or ostentatious French restaurant would have. The difference between tasteful and ostentatious is a microscopic line. I was sat immediately at the bar and opted to get the Saigon Shack Pho and the Fresh Summer Rolls with shrimp. To be honest, the fresh summer rolls were decent, but didn't wow me. I like to be wow'd. I love to be wow'd, in fact. But the pho...................WOW. The amalgamation of the sliced beef, house brisket, beef balls, and rice noodles hit like Roy Jones Jr hitting Percy Harris with 4 hooks at one time. Y'all must have forgot! One of the servers had one of the coolest shirts on. It was a jet black T with bold white lettering that read "Saigon *** Shack" with QUALITY stitching, none of this screen print BS. Definitely a pretty long line during lunch hours when we went though it moved pretty quickly for a party of 2. They definitely try and keep things moving. I ordered the Spicy Short Rib Pho while my fiancée ordered the Saigon Shack Phở. The spicy short rib had an interesting taste/novelty to what I'm used to while the saigon shack was your standard pho dac biet type. Cash only and seating is pretty tight so it can be quite loud. Service is pretty quick. A bowl of pho will cost you somewhere around $15-$20. Overall, probably one of the better pho spots in Manhattan, though I feel like the bar isn't super high in NYC.
