And the taste is absolutely amazing, especially for the vegetarian soup since it did not have any meat in it. The banh mi is absolutely packed. The most notable element is their generous fill of pate. One sandwich alone can easily be a full meal, but my curiosity ordered more nonetheless. The stir fried rice noodles are a hit. I love how the Pho noodles become a chewy texture, and the seasoning is evenly distributed. Packs more flavor than it appears. I believe this is due to the popularity of a serviceable, but hip Vietnamese option nearby. This is the best Banh Mi I have had. I keep trying others, but the bread here is unmatched. It is so hard to find decent pho place in the city, but I found this gem through UberEats and they pleasantly surprised me with how delicious their banh mi and pho are. I have not been to the restaurant in person but would love to, since pho is best eaten piping hot in the restaurant. I grew up downing this amazing dessert beverage every time we ate V-food, but now I'm old and my metabolism is such that even thinking of sugar makes me gain 10 lbs. So NYC having a dearth of Che Ba Mau is probably for the better, but on the night I discovered it here at Hello Saigon, I saw screw the diet and ordered it. It was the icy, jelly, coconut-y, bean-y wonderfulness I remembered. My only sadness was they didn't serve it in the traditional tall sundae/float glass I'm used to, but instead brought it out in a smaller plastic cup. But I guess beggars can't be choosers. Yes, I started with dessert for this review because that's how special CBM is and that's hot important it is that you get it. Other delicious items were the Rare Beef Eye Round Soup, delivering that pho home run I needed on a cold, drizzly night. The much more expensive but also larger BBQ Beef Short Rib (Suon Bo Nuong) is worth the $26 if you're in the mood for perfectly cooked, fall-off-the-bone rib in a collagen-infused stock packed with umami. But seriously. Get the Che Ba Mau. It's Vietnam's answer to bingsu, falooda and all those other shave ice desserts that Asia the motherland has bequeathed us--and it's amazing. read more

My friends came in for early dinner around 5:45pm on a weekday and there was plenty of seating. Definitely casual dining (at times I felt it was almost too casual?), but it's the vibe. This pho I got? Pretty good. I got the Pho Hello Saigon which had all three meats in it. I thought it was classic pho; the broth was super flavorful, noodles were soft, and the meat wasn't too tough even though I was eating it at an actual snail's pace and it had plenty of time to become tough. My favorite was the brisket for sure. The main reason why this review isn't 4 stars is because there was a faint scent of bathroom the entire time we were there that just made me less and less hungry. You guys know what I mean. The shrimp roll with sugar cane has a great texture and rich flavors, the sugar cane itself is a bit too dry to chew though. The tamarind chicken wing is really delicious with a slightly crispy skin and juicy meat, the french fries that come with the wings are well made too. The mussels with beer and lemongrass is a bit bitter at first, but soaking them in the broth for a bit longer helps. The broth of the pho is very rich of beef flavors. The Hello Saigon pho gives you a variety of meat and all are delicious. Decent authentic Vietnamese food, but the atmosphere could use a little work. I ordered the Grilled Lemongrass Beef Angel Hair Vermicelli. Not sure if this is usual, but it came with the lettuce (which was massive) and other veggies separately from the beef and noodles. This left me a bit confused as to how to properly eat this (why couldn't they just put it together for me and save me the work?) but maybe it was just my inexperience leading to my confusion. Anyways, the beef itself was pretty good - flavorful and savory, but too chewy. The vermicelli noodles were standard - I could tell they came in square sheets, so that is probably how they bought them in the package (but maybe they purposely made them in-house like that). $21 was an okay deal for this. Regarding atmosphere, at first Hello Saigon might look like a semi-nice sit-down dining experience, but gradually you will start to realize that the niceness factor is slowly decreasing. A few things: 1. The kitchen door is left open and there is a big dish of plates/cups outside the door where the staff drop them in so if you're sitting near there, you are constantly hearing clinking and clanking from that area - not very pleasant. 2. They were playing American rap music, which I personally do like in general but not when I'm trying to enjoy my Vietnamese noodles. 3. The staff were not always super professional- for example, some of them were climbing up on chairs to reach things right next to tables with people eating there. Overall, I can see Hello Saigon being a decent place purely for its food (like in a delivery setting), and I think it has potential to be much better with some rather simple adjustments to the atmosphere. But for now, my conclusion is that it is not a bad option for Vietnamese food, but I think you can probably find some better options for Southeast Asian cuisine around the area. read more

As someone who's Vietnamese, I judge a Vietnamese restaurant mostly by the quality of its pho. I order a bowl of their house special pho whenever I crave a taste of home. The broth is rich, flavorful, and has good depth. You can tell they use a mix of aromatics in making their broth. Although they could put more meat in their soups, I don't mind it since I try not to eat too much meat in each meal. As to their other menu items, I think some things are a hit or miss. One time, I tried their canh chua (sweet and sour soup) with ca kho to (braised stone pot fish), which is a classic Viet combination. Both items were weirdly overly sweet, and the fish was a bit overdone. Their summer rolls, spring rolls, and banh mi are pretty standard. But their calamari is surprisingly SO good! They're fried with sweet fish sauce and I cannot stop eating them when they're in front of me. Overall, this is a pretty authentic establishment. Still my favorite pho spot! I ordered from grubhub and it came within 20 minutes. They do a really good job here of packaging the food so that it stays piping hot, and they even make sure to vent the fried spring rolls so they stay crispy. Honestly, the pho is as good as ever, the broth is so flavorful I honestly don't even add hoisen or sriracha sauce anymore. That's how you know the pho is legit.
