Wonderful banh mi! We waited a good amount of time one Friday night for a table for 2 for dinner. It was about a 40 minute wait? It was mainly young customers, a mix of NYU students and young professionals in suit and tie. There is something about pho that holds a special place in my heart and of course my tummy! I have had good pho, bad pho, very normal plain pho and amazing pho. Regardless I still enjoy them all! Where would I put Saigon Shack? AMAZING pho. Has to be one of the best I have ever had in my life. I have been here now about 6-7 times? I have never left unsatisfied but usually always wanting more! Alright, let's start with the place itself. It is located on a street where you can easily just miss it as there is an buttload of amazing food options but you will not be disappointed if you stop here. The place is almost always packed so there is gonna be a wait, it is usually no more than 15 minutes. The only downside to this place is that the fact that the tables are pretty small and it is cash only so HAVE CASH READY! For some reason, all the female staff are all really pretty, could be me but that's just a observation from me. What really matters is the food! I always get the Pho Tai and summer rolls! Summer Rolls: These are always great to have as it is a starter but can be easily done wrong if the ingredients aren't fresh. The lettuce HAS to be fresh and have a nice crunch. Saigon Shack does it right, everything is super fresh and adding the daikon is super refreshing and something that most places don't have! The rolls with the peanut sauce hits the spot as you wait for your pho. Pho: Now the main point of this review, the pho. OH MY PHO. You never have to wait to too long for your food here which is something I greatly appreciate. I have learned over the years that the best pho doesn't need much added to the broth. I always like to try the broth before I add anything and just wow. Their broth just has that umami taste to it. It has that sweet salty beefy taste, just everthing you want in a pho broth. Just some greens and a touch of lime is all you need, nothing more. No Siracha, No Hoisin, or No Hot Oil needed here. When you have to add all those to enhance the favor, it is the sign of a bad pho. My only minor compliant would be that I wished the noodles itself was a little thicker as the one here is a little thinner than I am used to but that is very nitpicking. In the end, I love this place and has become my go to pho spot in NYC. I'll definitely be back and have taken many of my friends "pho"ginity here and will continue to do so! read more

Great place.  Food is excellent and at low prices.  there's lots of meat in the dishes - grilled pork vermicelli:  even with half the meat they give, it would be a good deal.  same with the sandwiches, and i assume the pho (never had the pho, looking forward to trying it).   i went there for a pickup order.  they had a few tables outside (narrow sidewalk) and they were all full.  also, about 10 ppl milling around outside waiting for a table.  and this was at 1pm.  half hour wait.  and they wait b/c it's worth it. The weather was beautiful outside so they had the entire front of their restaurant open (including outside seating, etc). The place was tiny and PACKED, and very busy - expect to be seated and stay seated; you don't want to be getting up and around. We shared a long table near the door with a few other groups. Ordered the sweet potato fries: super crispy and seasoned just enough, but I wasn't a fan of the white dipping sauce. The sauce was a basically lot of mayo mixed with chili sauce - super creamy, rather heavy, and slightly spicy - really not my thing. It was a really warm spring day and almost too hot for pho, so I ordered the pork chop with vermicelli. The pork came cut in small slices and tasted rather bland, but the entire dish felt incredibly healthy - lean meats, fresh cold vegetables (carrots, cucumber), and cooled vermicelli. All in all, the main entree I ordered felt very refreshing for a warm day. This place is cash only - which was frustrating - and I felt like we were rushed out to accommodate the long line of people waiting to be seated, hence the 3 stars. I've gotten the vegetable pho, spring rolls, chicken ban mi, and summer rolls. The vegetable pho is SO loaded with vegetables, and to my surprise the imitation meat actually tastes like meat! I enjoyed all of the appetizers, but I will say the chicken ban mi was on the dryer side and could have used more sauce. Full disclosure: I had the ban mi through takeout so that could be why.
